JaMarcus Russell is Synonymous with Bust
1-liner, NFL December 11th. 2008, 5:30pmJaMarcus Russell: The natives, naturally, are restless as they watch the future of the franchise flounder on a weekly basis. We take umbrage with the phrase “dominated in college.” He was ordinary as a junior and had a very good senior season, but we’re talking about a guy who had two 300-yard passing games in his college career. Apparently, destroying Notre Dame in a bowl game sent his stock soaring. Everyone was distracted by his cannon arm. The Bay Area (SF and Oakland) has had a horrible run in drafting QBs. Oakland: Russell (06), Cement Shoes Walter (05), Ronald Curry (02), Marques Tuiasosopo (01), Billy Joe Hobert (93). SF: Alex Smith (05), Cody Pickett (04), Ken Dorsey (03), Brandon Doman (02), Giovanni Carmazzi (00). (San Jose Mercury News)

It’s true all the QB’s the Bay Area has drafted recently have sucked, but other than JaMarcus Russell, Alex Smith and Jim Druckenmiller…how many of them were first rounders? Hell, Ronald Curry wasn’t even drafted to PLAY QB. Teams waste lower-round draft picks on QB’s that never develop every year. I’d say the Bears are probably worse at drafting QB’s – and RB’s – than either the Raiders or Niners.

As a ND fan I find Russell being garbage hilarious. He clearly was drafted number one because of the Sugar Bowl, and was playing probably the worst defense he had played all year. Would Quinn be doing better there? Who knows, that organization is a joke. But after all the draft day stuff Quinn is in a much better situation, was given time to adjust to the league, and still managed to win his job for next year only playing a handful of games. So fuck you Oakland, we’re glad you fucked this one up.

Oh No Romo
- Could be worse. Angelo’s a defensive scout, and thus he’s awesome at finding overlooked gems in the draft. Lance Briggs, Tommie Harris, etc.

Billy Joe Hobert
Remember when Billy Joe Hobert and Bobby Herbert (sp?) played for New Orleans at the same time? That was a confusing time in my life.

Tommie Harris was an overlooked gem?
December 11th, 2008 at 5:45 PM
(14th overall pick)
December 11th, 2008 at 5:51 PM
completely hear you.
however …
tom brady – 6th round
kurt warner – undrafted
david garrard – 4th round
matt cassel – 7th round
kyle orton 4th round
delhomme – undrafted
romo – undrafted
that’s just among the top 20 passers, yardage-wise, this season.

As dominant as he was his first three seasons, yes, I would say he was overlooked. He’s the perfect DT for the Cover 2 when healthy.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:54 PM
garrard went in the fourth? that sack of suck should’ve been undrafted

That’s true, TBL. But think about how many QB’s are drafted each year. 18? 20 maybe? When you figure there are only 32 starting QB’s in the league and probably only 35-40 you’d actually WANT starting a game (if that), that’s a lot of QB’s that don’t end up panning out. How do you think ESPN hires all its’ college football analysts?

Sanders I’m still not seeing it. How is a 14th overall pick overlooked?
December 11th, 2008 at 6:04 PM
Not really overlooked, just undervalued. Angelo saw something in him that at least 10 other teams missed, or else they’d have picked him. Same thing with Dwight Freeney when he dropped to 11th because of his size.
December 11th, 2008 at 6:14 PM
Or it could have been based on team needs, just sayin. If you want an overlooked pick from the first round in that draft I’d go with Steven Jackson at 24
December 11th, 2008 at 6:20 PM
I concede.
December 11th, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Don’t you mean “ordinary Sophomore year” and “very good Junior year”?
December 11th, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Not for me. Bobby Hebert was a winner. Blow Job Hobo was a loser. I WAS confused when we had Steve Walsh, and then later drafted Danny Wuerfell. Thought they were the same size of suck…

I know you’ll have to go back a couple more years, but we can also include Jim “Drunken”miller on that list, right?
