Eagles Defeat Punchless Browns, Four Teams in Each League Remain in the Wild Card Hunt
NFL December 16th. 2008, 10:00am
* The Patriots can miss the playoffs even if they win their final two and go 11-5.
* The Colts could miss out on the playoffs if they lose to Jax and Tennessee.
* Dallas, despite its two best performances of the season in the last two weeks against Pittsburgh and the Giants, could still miss the playoffs with two losses.
* San Diego can still win the AFC West, but it needs Buffalo to win in Denver this weekend.
The NFC smells like: Giants, Carolina, Minnesota, Arizona, Dallas, Atlanta.
Dallas has to play Baltimore and Philly.
Atlanta has to play Minnesota and St. Louis.
The Eagles have to play Washington and Dallas.
Tampa Bay has to play San Diego and Oakland.
We’re going to assume Dallas wins, Atlanta loses, the Eagles lose, and the Bucs lose. Dallas and Atlanta lock things up the following week with victories. This would set up two quality wild card games: Atlanta at Minnesota and Dallas at Arizona. The inverse would be horrendous, because with the Giants suddenly struggling, Dallas and Minnesota are both Super Bowl contenders out of the NFC.
The AFC remains murky, but looks like: Pittsburgh, Tennessee, NY Jets, Denver, Indy, Miami.
Jets have to play Seattle and Miami.
Dolphins have to play KC and the Jets.
Patriots have to play Arizona and Buffalo.
Baltimore has to play Dallas and Jacksonville.
As much as we’d love for Denver to crap the bed – PJ Pope and Tatum Bell are splitting carries, so why not? – against the Bills, that ain’t happening.
Yes, we thinking more with heart than head about the Jets. Problem is, we really think they’ll lose to Seattle and it’ll all be over.
The Patriots will probably get it, but we refuse to wrap out mind around the idea that Tom Brady went down for the season in week one, and the Jets still couldn’t get in the playoffs over the smug Belichick. This angers us so much that we refuse to talk about it. We actually prefer the Patriots with Brady, because they’re fun to watch. But this Cassel guy and Sammy Morris? Gimmie a break. That just hurts.

Gutsy performance by the Browns. Why the hell was that turd Romeo punting from the Eagles 35, what have you got to lose you moron. Dead man walkin.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:06 AM
You mean the Lions are out of the playoff picture? When did that happen?
December 16th, 2008 at 10:07 AM
so you’re saying my super bowl pick is still alive!?
December 16th, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Shouldn’t the headline be, “Despite the Eagles desperate attempts to give the game away, the Browns found a greater level of ineptitude.”
December 16th, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Easy on the Vikings being a SB pick. They just lost Pat Williams for the season and have T-Jack starting against the Falcons this week. Also, Minnesota has a very rich history of choking in big games, especially against Atlanta.
/Still crying over ‘98.

San Diego can still win the AFC West…
San Diego is like a sore tooth. TBL can’t quit messing with it. That team is an abortion. However, yeah, they can still win the West. Cutler v Rivers on the last weekend would be a fun game to watch if the playoffs were on the line.
/Phillips is my fantasy QB.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:18 AM
YES! problem is, they need Losman to pull some serious shit out of his ass this wknd in Denver. i’d give them a 1% chance.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:20 AM
TBL -
Denver is inept enough to lose a game against a dead man walking team on the road. The AFC West is, I don’t know the words… fucking horrible.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:24 AM
pki – You see “How I Met Your Mother” last night?
December 16th, 2008 at 10:26 AM
romeo must die
December 16th, 2008 at 10:26 AM
YES! problem is, they need Gibran Hamdon to pull some serious shit out of his ass this wknd in Denver. i’d give them a 2% chance.

Denver lost to Jax, Miami, and Oakland. ALL at home. They can easily lose to the Bills.
@ Hawk, great episode.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:27 AM
If NYJ and NE both finish 11-5, who gets the division?
If MIA and NE both finish 11-5, who gets the division?
December 16th, 2008 at 10:28 AM
Denver has to lose twice to miss the playoffs, don’t they?
Dallas could easily miss the playoffs if they lose once.
The Bucs are in if they win out and are at home (6-0 at home) against 2 west coast teams with losing records.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:28 AM
the bills.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:29 AM
Its a shame that the AFC East will probably get two teams in, pushing a much better Baltimore team out. That entire division has inflated records from being matched up against both putrid West divisions. Baltimore was playing Tenn/NYG/Dal/Pitt while the Jets are struggling with SF/Sea/Oak/KC.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:30 AM
“and the Bucs lose.”
The idea that Tampa is going to lose to San Diego made me laugh so hard I spit out my coffee.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:32 AM
If NYJ and NE both finish 11-5, who gets the division?
If MIA and NE both finish 11-5, who gets the division?
the bills.
I wish!!!
If the Fins win out, they are in, no matter if Pats win out.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Seriously, the more I think about this…on what planet does there appear to be ANY likelihood that San Diego is going to win on the road at Tampa.
The Bucs aren’t missing the playoffs. I don’t like ‘em, and I think they do it with smoke and mirrors, but they are not missing the playoffs.
NFC wild cards are going to be TB and Philly…not Dallas and Atlanta.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Wait, you have both the Bucs and Falcons losing but then the Falcons winning in week 17 to make the playoffs. You think the Bucs are going to lose twice, because they have the tiebreaker over the Falcons.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:35 AM
If NYJ and NE both finish 11-5, who gets the division?
If MIA and NE both finish 11-5, who gets the division? Roeth
I think it is whoever has the higher BCS ranking.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:37 AM
I’m calling it now…..The Vikes will lose their last two and the Bears will tip toe into the playoffs!
December 16th, 2008 at 10:37 AM
Tampa Bay is invincible.
/Brad Johnson
December 16th, 2008 at 10:38 AM
Considering Dallas has the tiebreaker over TB enjoy that pipe dream
December 16th, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Bucs win out, Dallas doesn’t.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Once again enjoy that pipe dream. Chargers are going to beat them
December 16th, 2008 at 10:42 AM
YYSA…what has happened during this season that makes you think there is ANY chance San Diego is capable of winning on the road at TB?
Not going to happen.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:45 AM
Jay- I just dont think TB has the offense to compete and their defense is getting tired. Kiffin announcing he is going to Tennesse wont help either. Oh and there is a 50% chance Griese is starting
December 16th, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Is it the Bucs 6-0 home record that makes you think that or the Chargers 2-5 road record with wins over KC and Oakland?
December 16th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
YYSA…I don’t disagree with any of that. But San Diego blows. They have a lame duck coach, a sudden inability to run the football, and an apparent lack of any care or concern about what has happened to them this season. I know they still have a scintilla of hope re: the playoffs, but I don’t care. Their only wins on the road this season are against teams with a combined 5 wins. And they needed a miracle to pull off one of those.
Listen, I think TB pretty much sucks. But people need to come to the realization that San Diego sucks as well.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:50 AM
If the Falcons win this weekend, I will be fairly confident about a playoff berth. They need to beat Minny.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
you know who else sucks? miami and NYJ, who feasted on ridiculously creamy schedules. atlanta, ditto. denver, who just plain sucks. arizona.
baltimore, dallas and philly, i.e. good football teams, all have uphill roads to get to the playoffs. not going to lie…the NFL has sucked ridiculous ass this year.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:52 AM
I still want to know if TBL thinks the Bucs are going to lose twice at home or if he just doesn’t know the tiebreaker rules.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:55 AM
I’d like to see TB beat SD as much as anybody. Lord knows Denver can’t win that division on their own. But it’s hard to have confidence in Garcia, or Griese, or whoever else Gruden has playing QB.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:56 AM
do not sleep on the eagles. that is all.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
That depends on your team. As far as I am concerned, the NFL has kicked ass this year. As for Atlanta’s schedule, getting the AFC West and NFC North has definitely helped but that is what you get when your previous years record was 4-12. They, for the most part, are winning the games they are supposed to. Denver at home aside.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:59 AM
The funny thing is San Diego has had the 2nd easiest schedule in the league and they have a losing record. Even with that, people still think they’ll beat a team that hasn’t lost at home yet this year.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:59 AM
“But it’s hard to have confidence in Garcia, or Griese, or whoever else Gruden has playing QB.”
Yet San Diego has given you any reason to have confidence in them?
December 16th, 2008 at 11:02 AM
SD sucks…the whole team except for rivers and vincent jackson.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:04 AM
the NFL has sucked ridiculous ass this year.
agree 100%. worst year that i can remember. Bunch of boring, below average teams that suck, and a bunch of semi-boring above-average teams that underperformed to ridiculous levels (Buffalo, Green Bay, Jacksonville, Cleveland, New Orleans, San Diego, Chicago), and a few frauds mixed in because of favorable schedules (Miami, Jets, Arizona, Denver).
December 16th, 2008 at 11:06 AM
If SD puts up 15+ points they win.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:08 AM
I didn’t see it Hawkeye, but I did DVR it. I heard what it was about and figured that they would totally Fargo that thing up.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:15 AM
Interesting. Bucs average 24 points a game at home and the Chargers give up 24 points a game on the road.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:15 AM
What a surprise Bills and Browns fans complaining about the NFL sucking. The NFL is fantastic, always, in every way imaginable. Nothing is better, in fact nothing even comes close. I’m already dreading a football-less existence on Sunday/Monday nights.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I LOL’d
December 16th, 2008 at 11:21 AM
coop…i should qualify my previous statement. compared to previous seasons, this year’s NFL has sucked. it’s still better than anything other than college football and golf.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:25 AM
What a surprise Bills and Browns fans complaining about the NFL sucking
coop: Yes, I am (and always will be, unfortunately) a Bills fan. Please keep in mind they suck EVERY YEAR, so that does not sway my opinion regarding this year’s NFL.
I have virtually ZERO interest in watching almost any game this year, including last night’s shitfest. Games have become compelling because of the terrible play. San Diego’s “riveting” comeback against KC in front of 40,000 empty seats? NJ’s “miracle comeback” against a terrible Bills team that kicked their ass all day, then gave them the game? Miami having the ball 21 minutes and making 11 first downs to San Fran’s 39 and 24, but winning because both offenses suck, Mimai’s just sucked less? Need I go on?
Quality football in the NFL is non-existent this year
December 16th, 2008 at 11:28 AM
NFC East has been pretty good.
/homer
December 16th, 2008 at 11:30 AM
The team does, Norv Turner doesn’t.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:33 AM
I’m not sure what you consider quality football, but close games and interesting story lines are all I ask for. Just yesterday I watched an absolutely thrilling Bills/Jets game that came down to the last second and was won on a crazy play. I flipped over to watch overtime of a playoff elimination game, Atl/TB. I flipped back to see the final minutes of a close Tenn/Houston game. Then the Steelers and Ravens pounded each other for 60 minutes and the game was won on an amazing drive in the final minutes. We then got to see America’s team play the defending champs with all the juicy story lines involved.
In what way does any of that suck? And what could possibly be more interesting, a NBA double header, freaking baseball?
December 16th, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Philly and Tampa, NFC wild card Dallas will lose last 2 games(Balt, Philly)
Baltimore and Indy, AFC wild card
December 16th, 2008 at 11:37 AM
brett favre was involved, vick-less atlanta was involved, and the steelers and the ravens didn’t destroy each other and are both still NFL teams.
what’s better? major championship golf on sunday after a morning 18 and a baker’s dozen bong rips.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Major Championship golf WITH a baker’s dozen bong rips
December 16th, 2008 at 11:42 AM
So the Chargers still have a shot? Guess that means TBL is ranking them 12th this week?
December 16th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
coop: The NFL has become the NBA, in that many games are played like shit for the first 95% of the game, then the game is decided in the last 5% or overtime. Compelling if you can stomach watching the shitfest until the end, I guess.
gotta go w/ spencer on this one, at least on the golf part. I’m a little old for a baker’s dozen bong rips
December 16th, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Will the Saints lose to the Lions? I think so.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:59 AM
The NFL has become the NBA, in that many games are played like shit for the first 95% of the game, then the game is decided in the last 5% or overtime JPQ
Holy shit. I agree 100%. I came to that realization two years ago and any time I mention it, people look at me like I’m a freak. If I wasn’t a lazy bum, I’d go through and compare 4th quarter scoring vs the first 3 quarters of games that are within 10 points. I’m not saying anything is rigged, but it is odd. I don’t even get concerend when my fantasy guys have bad 1st halves (Thank you, Phillip Rivers).
December 16th, 2008 at 12:02 PM
Pats win out, Jets lose to Seahawks, Dolphins lose to Jets, Ravens lose to Cowboys. Pats in division, Phins get the last WC.
