A couple weeks back, Notre Dame decided to keep embattled coach Charlie Weis, a decision that may have Irish fans a bit huffy this morning in light of recent news.

1) 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, who said last weekend that he was “leaning” on returned to Florida, and quickly upgraded that to “50/50,” sent a wave of agita through Gator Nation (and joy through the rest of the SEC) Wednesday by saying he’d fill out the necessary paperwork to find out where he’d fall in the NFL draft. Teammates Brandon Spikes and Percy Harvin have done or will be doing the same.

2) The hottest coaching name in the college game – with respect to Turner Gill and Paul Johnson – UF’s Urban Meyer, did a radio interview this week where he said, “‘Well coach, I thought you said (Notre Dame was) your dream job.’ I grew up in the North and that was my dream job. Probably always will, but that has nothing to do with this.” Of course, Meyer quickly backpedaled yesterday, but the damage was done.

“This is my dream job. This is my job. I hope to be here for a long, long time. I hear that out there and it’s my fault. But this is everything I want in a school. This is the best job in America. You don’t give your life to a school like our whole staff has. We plan on doing this for a long time.”

In hindsight, this probably was the ideal season for Meyer to make the move to the Irish. Notre Dame’s core talent will be sophomores and juniors with experience, and the schedule is favorable. The Gators could be primed to lose their top two pass-catchers and Tebow, and offensive coordinator Dan Mullen has already taken the Mississippi State job. (Of course, you could always say that once the experienced Florida defense mostly graduates after next season, it’d be ideal to leave, too.)

Could Meyer-to-Notre Dame still happen? Seems unlikely, as Notre Dame would take a massive PR hit for giving Weis the public vote of confidence and then firing him six weeks later. And Meyer, currently a media darling and poised to match/overtake Spurrier’s legacy if he’s able to win a second title this year, would probably find his luminous star dimmed quite a bit in the venomous court of public perception.
