Kevin McHale Makes Pre-emptive Strike About His Future in Minnesota, Gently Lobs Grenade at Bloggers
Blogging, NBA December 18th. 2008, 2:30pm
Absolute insanity, or is there a kernel of truth somewhere in here?
“I think you’re going to see more and more shorter term stuff in our league,” [McHale] said. “Just because the access now, there’s so much media availability and everything else.”
“There’s just so many bloggers; everybody’s got an opinion. There’s all kinds of stuff going on. Sometimes that starts forming the opinion of people in front offices, too, and owner. It’s been kind of a crazy year so far.”
Ten or 15 years ago, McHale’s words might have been about the local sports columnist. But since the majority of those guys are increasingly dipping their toes into other mediums – radio, TV – fans may be more likely to honor the word of a loyal blogger who dutifully watches every Celtics game home and away, as opposed to that of the Globe’s Bob Ryan, who might be at Patriots practice one day, a Bruins game the next, PTI the next, then on the Red Sox, and then juggling appearances on the Sports Reporters and a dozen radio stations. (This is all just an example; we have no clue as to the daily whereabouts of Bob Ryan.)
Since most papers try to keep the beat guys on a short leash when it comes to opinion, a blogger often is your best bet for daily drum beating on why Kevin Love should be playing more, and why the T-Wolves front office is the biggest joke in the NBA.
The kicker? When a blogger gets behind a crusade to get rid of a coach, message boards pick it up, and next thing you know, the front office is flooded with emails from loyal fans who believe Kevin McHale is the primary reason the franchise has been sputtering for years.

Good thing he’s such a good coach and was such a good GM for years, otherwise this could get him some serious grief from the fans.

TBL it is your fault that McHale got Foye and Roy mixed up.
December 18th, 2008 at 2:39 PM
But Randy Foye is the next Wade!
December 18th, 2008 at 2:39 PM
Imagine if they had Roy, Mayo, and Jefferson…They would still suck but not as bad.
December 18th, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Because clearly the bloggers are responsible for the bad trades, the poor draft choices, the mediocre coaching and the wasting of one of the 10 most dedicated superstars in the modern NBA.
TBL, how could you do all that?! Have you no shame for yourself!

That was a “grenade”? Looks to me like he is recognizing “your” relevance.
December 18th, 2008 at 2:42 PM
I wonder if Mchale ever calls Randy Foye, Brandon by mistake.
December 18th, 2008 at 2:44 PM
to be fair to McHale, that team is only 5-6 top five picks away from being a contender.
December 18th, 2008 at 2:45 PM
I wonder what else we can blame on these…bloggers…

the English had a great triangle trade route with slaves, raw goods and finished goods until the damn bloggers got in the way…

The T-wolves are an embaressment to basketball.
Now how about a NON-nba post today?

The Joe Smith fiasco was the first step in a long line of traveshamockery that is the Wolves front office. I had to experience it first hand in high school, pathetic.

What McHale fails to recognize (or perhaps conveniently chooses to ignore) is that only opinions based on logical conclusion and salient points would generate the kind of pub he’s talking about. It’s preposterous for him to suggest that just because there are more opinions generated in print – er screen? – that those opinions are thus valued.
Maybe so Rex, but a back handed compliment for sure.

I’ve gotta agree with rexy here. I read that statement thrice and can’t figure out where he’s lobbing a grenade. sounds like a well-grounded perception of sports coverage to me.

What is he talking about here? Shorter term what? Contracts?
Crazy as in nobody gave Rashard Lewis max dollars for max years? Yeah that’s terrible.
December 18th, 2008 at 3:13 PM
I think his implication about shorter term stuff is that coaches/GMs etc will be on shorter leashes because owners will be susceptible to knee-jerk reactions bc of fan outcry? Just speculatin here…
a bit of a stretch

I agree with Irish; wtf?
