Happy New Year!
Happy Holiday! December 31st. 2008, 7:40am
Apologies in advance for all the downtime yesterday, but an end of the year purge/cleanup was necessary before forging into 2009. To anyone at work today … sorry, but we won’t be posting. We’ll be back with a couple of posts tomorrow, and even a few Friday.
And yes, it pains us to not post today, especially since there’s plenty of post-worthy material: Larry Fitzgerlad, girlfriend beater? Mike Shanahan, fired. Portland, minus Brandon Roy, stuns Boston, as Greg Oden finishes the year with two straight double-doubles. Ana Ivanovic, frolicking on the beach in a bikini with an Australian golfer. Rough night in Oklahoma: No. 4 Sooners lost to unranked Arkansas, and the Cowboys lost to the Ducks in the Holiday Bowl.
We’ll close out the year by patting ourselves on the back. Do note some of the names at the bottom. Be safe out there tonight, kids.

December 31st, 2008 at 8:10 AM
Boo stuck here until 2.
Post today and not tomorrow and Friday
December 31st, 2008 at 8:11 AM
Can’t you at least unleash CRM for the 4 poor saps like me stuck in cubicles?
December 31st, 2008 at 8:12 AM
bill simmons at the bottom, fantastic.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:13 AM
No posts?!! Complete horseshit!
Oh well, let’s all get shitfaced for the New Year!
later!
December 31st, 2008 at 8:17 AM
Few things in life truly live up to their billing.
Reverse cowgirl, the view from atop the Empire State Building, and TBL’s NFL picks.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:22 AM
How about Oooooooooden against the C’s last night, solid game, 13 and 10.
Boston’s dropped 3 of 4, it’s over for them!
December 31st, 2008 at 8:28 AM
i know a site that will be posting today.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:36 AM
Apologies in advance for all the downtime yesterday, but an end of the year purge/cleanup was necessary before forging into 2009.
Bullshit you were playing Madden.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:37 AM
Sparty – lets hear an honest prediction from you on the MSU-Georgia game tomorrow.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:55 AM
sigh- honest? Georgia 35-24.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:56 AM
dishonst? MSU 35-31
December 31st, 2008 at 8:56 AM
Damn, Arkansas comes out and dominates OU last night and no posting today? Remember the name Mike Washington, he played Blake Griffin like a fiddle last night.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:03 AM
happy new year everyone
December 31st, 2008 at 9:05 AM
barkley got started early
December 31st, 2008 at 9:07 AM
this should be deleted immediately.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:10 AM
Sparty, after the way PSU and tOSU handled MSU, even your honest prediction seems to be through rose-colored glasses. hope i’m wrong, but…
December 31st, 2008 at 9:11 AM
georgia cannot stop the run.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:15 AM
dantonio has some tricks up his sleeve. we need this badly for our program to make a jump.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:16 AM
best news ever!!! just kidding TBL, have a safe NYE everyone.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:27 AM
They’re 39th while MSU is 71st.
Moreno > Ringer
/SEC homer
December 31st, 2008 at 9:29 AM
by no means are we good against the run.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:29 AM
Seriously, a CRM or Hernia isn’t capable of putting together 100 words on Shanahan or the Rose Bowl.
I’m rooting for you Sparty, but Rex is right, the two best teams you played absolutely pistol whipped you. Georgia isn’t quite as good as those two, but pretty close.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:30 AM
shit happens…i am hoping for a repeat of the 2000 Citrus Bowl, we were huge underdogs in that game against Florida.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:37 AM
Thanks Pop, can we take car tonight? We wont drive around pounding 40s and smokin Ls, promise.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:45 AM
coop…come to MLJ for a thing on shanahan.
dumbest firing ever.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:45 AM

December 31st, 2008 at 9:48 AM
Now I don’t feel so bad about the Cavs loss to the Heat. Also, Oden led the Blazers in ASSISTS last night.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:53 AM
Cavs didn’t have any business even getting back to within 1 as poorly as they played/shot. I like that Miami team, Chalmers is a baller, Beasley comin around. If they can get a decent big man (and keep DWade healthy) they could be a real force in the east in the next few years.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Go Blue!!
What, they aren’t playing?? Oh well, off to the Wisky bball game instead.
Happy New Year to all!
December 31st, 2008 at 10:01 AM
If only you still had Bobby Williams as your coach. ha ha.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:03 AM
It’s amazing how much Dez Bryant means to that OkSU team. Without him they were horrible last night? Zac Robinson looked lost. Especially after he almost got his head taken off.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:07 AM
why didn’t the heat go after Kristic? no mid level exception?
December 31st, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Merry New Year! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA
December 31st, 2008 at 10:09 AM
What’s everyone doing for New Year’s tonight?
/at work and needing to pass time
December 31st, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Oh yeah, this Bill Cowher/Jets story is already more boring than Brett Favre’s “retirement” discussion.
/shit or get off the pot
December 31st, 2008 at 10:11 AM
takin hits from the vaporizer then goin to a few parties.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:11 AM
I am from a small town of 7000 people and want to know what it is really like on New Years for New Yorkers. We have a bunch of people who shoot off their guns and blow up shit so it must be ten times worst in NY, doesn’t it?
December 31st, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Damnit I am here until 5 this is not going to make the day go any quicker. I posted a playoff preview on my site if anyone is looking for something to read. Also, Madoff is accused of using offshore funds illegally.

December 31st, 2008 at 10:12 AM
What’s everyone doing for New Year’s tonight?
Getting shitty drunk and watching LSU get its ass kicked. But I’ll say this–they’d better get their kicks in now with John Chavis and (probably) Ed Orgeron taking over the defense and Russell Shepard coming in at quarterback.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:13 AM
believe it or not, it is frowned on to blow things up and shoot off guns in nyc
December 31st, 2008 at 10:14 AM
2008 has been so great, it has been extended by 1 second. How will everybody spend their extra second? One extra drink for me tonight at midnight.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Lets try that again….
2008 has been so great, it has been extended by 1 second. How will everybody spend their extra second?
December 31st, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Is it possible to combine and hit the vaporizer, get shitty drunk, fire guns off and watch LSU get there ass beat?
December 31st, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Also, I always feel like I go into NYE with the mindset that I won’t have a good time because everyone always says that “NYE is overrated, its no fun.” Then i always end up having a blast, peaking too early, and passing out at 12:15. You need to have that mindset.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Is it possible to combine and hit the vaporizer, get shitty drunk, fire guns off and watch LSU get there ass beat?
Sounds like Baton Rouge on any weeknight
/except the 4th, which only occurs on Saturday
December 31st, 2008 at 10:27 AM
NYE = Night for Amateurs
December 31st, 2008 at 10:30 AM
5th place, verra nice TBL. I would point out, yet again, that not every reader of the site accesses you from work, and there are people here whether it’s a holiday or not. If you don’t want to post so that you and your fine associates can spend some down time with their families, that’s fine…just say so. Don’t cloak it in “No one’s out there.”
December 31st, 2008 at 10:30 AM
i haven’t had a good NYE since i was a frosh in college, ended up drinking way too much champagne/jager/beer and threw up a ton of queso, thought i was having a heartattack and got pretty much naked and yelled at my friends to call an ambulance.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:31 AM
NYE = Night for Amateurs
I disagree…obviously with the places that have huge covers (bars, hotels, ect) you are going to have a contrived good time. But I would put a good NYE house party with 20-35 people that you all know up against any type of party.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:32 AM
threw up a ton of queso
Tostitos?
December 31st, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Wishes for everybody for 2009:
1. I wish some other NFL team goes 0-16. Bengals anybody?
2. Wish MSU and OSU go a combined o-fer, with a 12 overtime game between them ending in a 3-0 win for one or the other.
3. Wish Mike Dantoni gets his smugness knocked off his face.
4. Wish University of Michigan basketball team actually makes it to the NCAA tournament.
5. Wish the Pistons make it further than the Cavs so I can tell Nick that the trade was a success.
6. Anybody but the Celtics or Lakers win the NBA title.
7. Any combination of teams in the Super Bowl except Giants-Colts. I cannot take two weeks of “Manning v Manning”.
8. Wish the Lions actually win a game or two.
9. Wish the Tigers make the playoffs!!!!
10.Wish the Yankees and their 1 billion dollar payroll are home in October.
Happy New Year everybody!
December 31st, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Wish granted (pstt, Cavs!)
Happy NE.

December 31st, 2008 at 10:43 AM
what’s everyone’s new year’s resolution?
mine is to stop swearing so much and stop eating pizza every other night.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:56 AM
@Jay – Orgeron is going to LSU!? would he go there to be d-line coach with Chavis as DC? that’s quite a downgrade from Ole Miss head coach.
December 31st, 2008 at 10:56 AM
I’ve been saying this for years (also applies to St Patties day). Bunch of idiots that dont know how to drink acting like fucktards, very annoying.
New years resolution, to only huff paint thinner on the weekends.
December 31st, 2008 at 11:04 AM
less swearing and pizza eating = less-fun-spencer
December 31st, 2008 at 11:06 AM
To turn my gambling and drinking habits into a full-time job.
December 31st, 2008 at 11:11 AM
@King Thank you for proving my point, that house party you mentioned can happen any night of the week. There is almost no difference because its NYE except for a little more champagne.
December 31st, 2008 at 11:13 AM
@Jay – Orgeron is going to LSU!? would he go there to be d-line coach with Chavis as DC? that’s quite a downgrade from Ole Miss head coach.
mizerle06, according to what I’ve read, Orgeron would be associate HC, D-line coach, and recruiting coordinator.
It’s what he was born to do. He’s a great recruiter. Ask USC and Ole Miss. He was just a shitty head coach.
He’s also a Cajun from way down South Louisiana. He was the Saints D-Line coach this year
December 31st, 2008 at 11:16 AM
that’s interesting, jay. thanks for the info. that job description does fit him perfectly (reading Meat Market right now) but I hadn’t heard that he was going to be at LSU. last I heard, Lane Kiffin was taking him to Knoxville for the same basic job description.
December 31st, 2008 at 11:22 AM
What do you SEC homers think of Monte Kiffin. I actually think that will not work, he’s a pro coach. Its very different creating pro schemes than teaching/coaching/recruiting 18 year old kids.
December 31st, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Agreed coop.
Of course it may just be because I’m a bitter Bucs fan that thinks he ruined the season and a Gator fan that hopes he fails…
December 31st, 2008 at 11:31 AM
@coop – as a Tennessee fan, I don’t think he’s much, if any, of an upgrade over Chavis so I’m not particularly impressed. LSU made a terrific hire by getting Chavis.
December 31st, 2008 at 11:34 AM
doing that tonight, actually excited for new years for a change
December 31st, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Truth.
Matty Ice and Jerod Mayo for ROYs. Anyone surprised there? Thank you San Francisco for Mr. Mayo’s draft pick!
December 31st, 2008 at 11:48 AM
@King Thank you for proving my point, that house party you mentioned can happen any night of the week. There is almost no difference because its NYE except for a little more champagne.
True, but thats like comparing watching the super bowl to watching week 2. At the core they are the same thing, but there are a few variables that are otherwise not there.
December 31st, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Seeing as I’m hungover as all fuck, I may or may not be going out tonight, which would ruin my New Years
December 31st, 2008 at 12:54 PM
You’re STILL hungover, fetch? Must have been some birthday.
December 31st, 2008 at 12:55 PM
well like an idiot, I went out last night too.
December 31st, 2008 at 12:56 PM
fetch-best cure for a hangover is more drinking
December 31st, 2008 at 12:56 PM
May as well make it three in a row then. You’ll have hockey and football to recover by.
December 31st, 2008 at 1:00 PM
You’re welcome, and good luck in the play-offs! Oh wait…..
December 31st, 2008 at 1:08 PM
howd i miss the pics of ivanovic and adam scott?
as hot as she is, he needs to focus on his golf game. he fucking sucks out there.
yes…golf > women
December 31st, 2008 at 1:25 PM
Spencer that could be the saddest comment I have read in a long time.
women > everything
December 31st, 2008 at 1:31 PM
still not that impressed, even though i finished 5th in baseball. once or twice could be lucky … let’s see if i can do it a 3rd time.
December 31st, 2008 at 2:46 PM
lotta late $ just went on BC – line sprung from 4 to 6 within a couple hours. took Vandy at +6
December 31st, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Go Beavs
December 31st, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Shanahan to the Lions.
/just made up that rumor…please spread it.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:02 PM
mistake
December 31st, 2008 at 3:04 PM
mizerle … If Kiffin makes a defensive halftime adjustment at any point next season, it will be an improvement over Chavis. Chavis could come up with good gameplans … but if something didn’t work, the Vols were screwed. As for Daddy Kiffin, I think he’ll do just fine. Tampa wore down at the end of the season because of age … not scheme. He’ll be a good closer for top-notch defensive recruits (You wanna play in the NFL? Son, I’m the architect of schemes used by nearly a third of the teams in the league.)
December 31st, 2008 at 3:05 PM
we are starting a Holmgren to Cleveland rumor at S&Fs. Spencer wasn’t too happy with it.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:10 PM
pistol pete – I understand your sentiments about Chavis and his propensity for a lack of halftime adjstments. however, he’s had top ranked defenses since the mid-90’s. if old kiffin even comes close to that kind of sustained success, he’ll be viewed as a good hire.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:16 PM
why would shanahan go to detroit? the smarter move would be cleveland, which is way more likely to win now than later.
i actually am not all that surprised by the firing. that collapse, combined with one playoff win in 10 years … i understand how you want to keep a guy who has won a SB, and whose team had a shitload of injuries, but …
December 31st, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Shanahan to Dallas.
Book it.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:24 PM
thank you, TBL…ive been thinking this since i heard he was fired. browns offensive personnel fits shanny’s system perfectly too. good stuff.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:34 PM
shanahan to dallas is interesting. surely barber and f jones would love it. i dont know the historical data, but how has he handled the spotlight and the media?
December 31st, 2008 at 3:45 PM
spencer- did you show my email about shanny to TBL? all the same reasons.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:46 PM
Money and the chance to turn around the most piss-poor organization in professional sports. Somebody with a huge ego (Shanahan? Parcells?) would think that them and only them are good enough and smart enough to do what nobody else has been able to do.
December 31st, 2008 at 3:55 PM
vandy in basically a home game against BC. what was i thinking?
3-0 vandy, 8 mins left in the first
doors inside the red zone …
December 31st, 2008 at 3:57 PM
i hear you, CC. there’s nowhere to go but up in detroit. i just dont know if the pieces are in place for an immediate turnaround. then again, what do i know … could anyone have predicted atlanta or miami this season?
guess all you have to do is grab a good QB and durable RB and anything’s possible …
vandy 6-0
December 31st, 2008 at 4:00 PM
“Apologies in advance for the downtime yesterday”
Ummm…advance…yesterday…WTF??
December 31st, 2008 at 4:03 PM
Wow, welcome back to earth, Golden Gophers. Ralph Sampson’s line: 0 points, 0 rebounds, 4 fouls.
December 31st, 2008 at 4:06 PM
yeah, because home field advantage has been such a key factor in all those Vandy home games the past 118 years.
December 31st, 2008 at 4:17 PM
the Vols have a huge HFA this bowl season!
December 31st, 2008 at 4:19 PM
fuckin’ comedian…
December 31st, 2008 at 4:24 PM
it’s true, by the way.
December 31st, 2008 at 4:29 PM
nobody is gonna beat them.
December 31st, 2008 at 4:38 PM
true story.
December 31st, 2008 at 4:54 PM
i’ll gladly take down 7-6 at the half.
disclaimer: I couldn’t name 3 vandy players, nor the head coach. it is simply an action play based on contrarian line movement
December 31st, 2008 at 5:33 PM
how about that freak vandy TD? ball glances off a BC player on a punt, returner doesn’t notice, and Vandy recovers in the end zone for a TD.
replays make it look like the ball def re-directed off the BC player.
December 31st, 2008 at 5:41 PM
This is what you get for having a bowl game El Paso. A crappy game for a crappy town.
December 31st, 2008 at 5:48 PM
5-0 for the Pac-10? Looks like it.
December 31st, 2008 at 5:55 PM
cassino – bowl game records = nothing. i can’t believe i used to buy into that hype.
my gosh vandy … get 4th down stop at midfield. 6 yards on first down. inc, -2 yards on a pass and BC gets it back. man, Vandy will need a prayer to cover for me here.
rs – thinking Ole Miss tomorrow vs. TT. thoughts?
December 31st, 2008 at 6:03 PM
Remember the days when there were good bowl games on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? And they went on all day? No?
Oh. Me neither.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:05 PM
bowl game records = nothing? They tell you something. If your conference gets beat up top to bottom or vice versa in bowl games I don’t see how that tells you nothing.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:06 PM
SM – huge fan of the NY Day games. loved them. used to break out the pen and paper (pre internet) and take notes on who will make a good NFL prospect and whom to watch. was fun.
the game tomorrow night is VT-Cincy. i imagine ratings will be awful.
nice stop on 3rd and 3 there, Vandy. now make something happen on offense. please.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Pac-10 should also have 4 teams ranked in the final polls.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:11 PM
quiz – how did the pac 10 do in the reg season against non-pac 10 teams?
osu lost to penn state, utah
oregon lost to boise state
cal lost to maryland
arizona lost to new mexico
wonder even bother address those frauds at ASU
remember that weekend where the pac 10 went 0-4 against the WAC or one of those middle-of-the-pack conferences?
December 31st, 2008 at 6:17 PM
TBL- I’m drinking the Ole Miss Kool Aid. I mean the Big 12 defenses have looked atrocious here in these bowl games. OK state got run all over last night and Missouri would have been blown out if they played anyone other than Northwestern.
That being said, I’m staying away from that one because Ole Miss gives me the “happy to be there” vibe and those teams rarely win these games and Texas Tech is playing a defacto home game. If Ole miss was a 6 point dog I would probably take it.
I like the LSU over tonight and South Carolina catching the 4 points tomorrow.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:19 PM
Agreed about these bowl records. How can they mean anything when there are 4 weeks between some of these games? It’s a totally different season. Look at the Big East’s bowl record since Miami,VT, and BC left, it’s ridiculous. I don’t think anyone is saying the Big East is the best BCS conference.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:22 PM
how many first downs this half for vandy? zero?
ive watched more of this game than any other bowl game. the reason is simple: gambling
December 31st, 2008 at 6:25 PM
Colege B-ball play tonight. ND giving 7 at Depaul
December 31st, 2008 at 6:25 PM
Pre-Bowl game polls = Penn State #6, Utah #7, Boise State #9.
Arizona’s loss was embarrassing. Cal losing at Maryland by a TD isn’t a horrible loss. I am just saying, the top of the Pac-10 was pretty decent. Not worthy of being shit on all year. Oregon State just beat the second best team in the Big East without OSU’s best two players (one of whom was the Pac-10 Offensive POY).
I am not saying that those losses during the regular season don’t count, I am just saying you can’t discount the bowl games having any meaning. They tell you plenty.
OSU beat Pitt and Hawaii
UO beat Okie St and they were a mess at QB when they lost to Boise St
UA beat BYU
Cal beat Colorado State, Mich State, and Miami
USC beat Ohio State (and should beat Penn State)
That’s a lot of OOC victories over bowl teams.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:27 PM
vandy has BC pinned deep and on 3rd down has 3 guys near a WR and the BC kid still catches it and goes for 31 yards. un-fucking-real
December 31st, 2008 at 6:27 PM
Weird though, how if the Pac-10 were 0-4 everyone would be saying how shitty it is. Hmmm.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:28 PM
fucking vandy secondary.
14-13 BC, too much time left for Vandy to keep this lucky cover going.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:29 PM
West Virgnia and Rutgers are both better than Pitt.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Is that supposed to be an argument FOR the Big East or what? Rutgers was fucking terrible this year.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:33 PM
TBL –
Those were the good ole days. Remember when the Cotton Bowl and the Orange Bowl were a big deal? I used to love watching Miami in Orange Bowl on New Year’s night.
I think the four biggest bowls were Orange, Sugar, Rose, and Cotton.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:33 PM
be careful with ND tonight. been a rough week for good teams – pitt, oklahoma, connecticut, purdue, gonzaga, etc.
also, i knew wainwright from my college hoops days. guy is a damn good coach. defense and ball control. i’ll pass
December 31st, 2008 at 6:34 PM
HUGE personal foul penalty on 3rd down after the incompletion! wow, i love it
December 31st, 2008 at 6:34 PM
West Virginia lost to Pitt a month ago. What am I missing? I will admit that Rutgers was playing damn good football at the end of the year.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:35 PM
I’m just saying Pitt is not the second best team in the Big East. And Rutgers was bad at beginning of the year but they were awesome at the end.. They were not terrible. But of course I’m sure you saw one second of a Rutgers game this year.
at (17) Pittsburgh W 54-34 —
Syracuse W 35-17 —
at South Florida W 49-16 —
Army W 30-3 —
Louisville W 63-14 –
December 31st, 2008 at 6:37 PM
I think WVU is better than Pitt but Pitt just has their number for whatever reason.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:38 PM
That d-lineman for BC looks like Steve Lattimer.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:38 PM
fair point. i would use the 0-4 to reinforce my “Pac-10 blows” argument.
vandy kicker hits the 45-yard FG! wow. stunner 16-14
December 31st, 2008 at 6:39 PM
Wait wait wait…Rutgers beat Syracuse AND Army?!?! How did I miss that? They are clearly a dominant force.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:40 PM
wow, UNLV up seven on Louisville. i looked at the line (something insane like Vill -13) and thought about it briefly. i think louisville is crap this year. so overrated.
(well, not crap; but just not as good as everyone thinks)
December 31st, 2008 at 6:41 PM
Quizz- please. Look at those scores. They were destroying teams at the end of the year.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:43 PM
QQ – i have to admit, i have not taken a peek at BE vs. Pac 10 and impressive out of conf wins. perhaps you have an argument. just based on what ive seen this year, i think the pac 10 is worse.
stats may not back that up.
ok vandy, PLEASE no turnover here. I can lose if BC scores and goes for two.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:45 PM
So wins against Syracuse Army and Louisville are part of a 5 game resume that makes a team “awesome?” Maybe it was playing in the Big East that made them look “awesome.” Take away the Big East and they’re a 3-3 team. And that’s including 2 service academies and a 1-AA.
I watched Rutgers. I saw Fresno State beat them handily, and I saw North Carolina paste them, then I watched them squeak by an NC State team that’s now 6-7 and is only playing in a bowl game because there are too many of them.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:45 PM
rs, I only see one “team” on that list.
Oh, and let’s try this: Mark Herzlich looks like Steve Lattimer.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:46 PM
I already beat you to it TBL
Big East has 10 OOC victories against bowl teams and the PAc 10 has 9, including this years bowl games.
this isn’t a Big East vs Pac 10 argument, I’m just pointing out that just because Pitt was in the Sun Bowl does not mean they were the second best team in that conference. As far as I’m concerned the Pac 10 is much better than the Big East because A )They have a dominant team and B) their 5-8 teams are much better than the Big East 5-8.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:48 PM
Quizz- really? USF and Pitt were both in bowl games. I’m sure the wins againt Washington and Washington St are much better on every Pac 10 schools resume.
Casino- Sorry that scoring 54 against Pitt that gave up 3 to Oregon State today means nothing to you. You’re the expert.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:50 PM
TBL – The Pac-10 is worse than…?
The obvious problem with the Pac-10 is that they have two horrible teams at the bottom. My counter is that pretty much every conference has a couple horrid teams that are gimmes at the bottom of the conference. Not UW/WSU horrid, but real bad none the less.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:50 PM
They have 2 when Oregon has a quarterback.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:51 PM
BC, with nary a timeout, trails 16-14 with 1:36 left. vandy just intercepeted davis.
wont rub it in. happy new year, man
December 31st, 2008 at 6:52 PM
rs – do not mind that 3 point game against OSU. OSU was missing something like 60% of their offense. And South Florida went 2-5 in conference.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:53 PM
You’re the one saying bowl games mean nothing, not me. And as QQ pointed out, Oregon State was without a couple of key pieces of their offense. Rutgers also gave up 34 to that team that OSU just shut out, but you conveniently left that part out.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:53 PM
Hey they have 10 when they all have a great teams!
December 31st, 2008 at 6:53 PM
Well that should quiet down some of the ACC > SEC talk when the 6th best SEC team beats the 2nd best AC team.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:55 PM
GG – FSU, VT, and GT are all better than BC.
/nothing to back that up
//rs’d
December 31st, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Quizz- you can’t use your bowl breakdown and put down wins against Bowl teams and then say USF is bad because they went 2-5 in conference. That’s not really fair.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:57 PM
My bowl breakdown?
Ok ok…USF isn’t horrible. Fair?
December 31st, 2008 at 6:58 PM
Wow, what a dick..I backed up why I thought Rutgers was better than Pitt and I think WVU is better. Then I said the PAC 10 was the better conference. Sorry about having an opinion.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:00 PM
BC beat FSU and won that division, so BC is better than FSU.
I’ll give you GT. They had the same record as BC, I just said BC was 2nd best since they were tied for the best ACC record and made the conference championship game.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:03 PM
December 31st, 2008 at 7:04 PM
try this again…
I get that a lot. Nothing personal.
/sincere
December 31st, 2008 at 7:10 PM
QQ- No worries, the more I watch these Big 12 defenses out of conference the more I think that Florida is going to hang 50 on Oklahoma.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:10 PM
GG…you from ACC country? How stacked is FSU’s offense going to be next year?
December 31st, 2008 at 7:12 PM
rs- I am sticking by my pick of OU in that one. I refuse to have faith in a team that lost to Ole Miss. I might have to take the over though.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:19 PM
Remember last year when Oregon was the best team in college football until Dixon got injured? And how this year the they won 10 games in spite of using 4 quarterbacks this year and Nate Costa didn’t play a down?
December 31st, 2008 at 7:22 PM
Actually I’m a Gator so I always think FSU is going to suck.
Can’t wait for the NCAA to finally make their decision on their punishment. Should only help when they lose a few scholarships a year.
Now the Gators are going to be loaded next year. We’ll be returning 10 or 11 starters on defense (depends on if Spikes leaves early) and 8 starters on offense (assuming that Tebow stays and Harvin leaves).
December 31st, 2008 at 7:22 PM
Casino- Injuries are part of the game. How do you know Oregon would have won the rest of their games with Dixon? No one knows that. Its all conjecture. Great teams win despite injuries. They just do. LSU won the national title last year and had massive injuries everywhere including starting a backup in the SEC title game.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:25 PM
i have a nice size futures bet (well, relatively speaking) on Oklahoma, so i’ll be rooting against Tebow and Meyer.
i’d like to bet against LSU tonight but im going to pass because even though he has a shitty team, Miles seems like a good coach. also, i dont believe in the GT defense. RS – you have me worried re: Ole MIss tomorrow … i think i’ll pass. didnt know where the game was
December 31st, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Wow, Reesing 19-22 221 and 4 tds in the 1st half..
December 31st, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Todd Reesing: 19-22, 221 yards, 4 TDs. In the first half.
Dez Briscoe: 10 catches for 147 yards and 2 TDs in the first half
December 31st, 2008 at 7:30 PM
I like GT tonight also. Playing in Atlanta, it should be a fast track and LSU just seems disinterested at this point. Can’t imagine it being much fun for these seniors to go from Sugar Bowl, BCS title game to Peach Bowl.
I’m going to put a bet in on GT before kickoff and the over.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:31 PM
ah, hell … action play:
GT -4
sorry RS, ended up taking DePaul +7 at home
December 31st, 2008 at 7:31 PM
Minny might want to put a guy on Briscoe.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:33 PM
Ole Miss/TT is on Friday, TBL
December 31st, 2008 at 7:34 PM
Just for you TBL I hope McLarney drops in 9 3s and then goes and smokes some pot.
And Harnagody pus in a nice 24 and 14 for a sweet 8 point win.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:37 PM
What makes you think that? Most SEC fans that I know of think he’s a terrible coach.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:43 PM
TBL- we double jinxed this LSU game. I blame us.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:47 PM
GG – Oh, i dont know … he takes an OSU team that went to 1 bowl game in 13 years to three bowl games in four years …
… three straight top 5 finishes at LSU
up until the struggles this year – the QB that had to transfer had a lot to do with that, obviously – he was THE hot coach in the country. now, it’s Urban meyer.
wow, great play by LSU db there to poke out a sure TD
December 31st, 2008 at 8:05 PM
“Massive injuries?” A bit of exaggeration there? And it is a long trip from starting a backup to using your FIFTH-STRING quarterback.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:08 PM
Louisville = frauds
Quizz- I was bringing up the Dixon thing. This year they were decimated for sure, but we can’t say they would be in the NC game if they had their 1st string QB. No one knows that for sure.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:17 PM
rs – I totally agree but to cassino’s point about this year, the Pac-10 had two pretty dominant teams once Oregon got their QB situation figured out. You watch UO vs OkSt and OkSt in their top Big-12 games and you have to admit UO looked to be on par with TTU/OU/UT. I am NOT saying they deserve to be considered at their level because injuries are part of the sport and they lost some games. I am saying that Oregon, when healthy, is a great team. And as an OSU fan, it pains me to say that.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:29 PM
I haven’t seen enough of ORegon to comment on how good they really are. Only saw them against USC, OSU and the bowl game. Thhey have looked great the last two games though.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:29 PM
So glad to see the “overrated” SEC getting whopped up on by Georgia Tech tonight…
/LSU’d
December 31st, 2008 at 8:33 PM
US up 3-0 on Canada in the U-20 tournament. Probably the upset of the year if it holds.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:33 PM
mental note: late, last-minute action plays on meaningless bowl games are dumb.
LSU 21, GT 3. absolutely no shot of GT covering -4, even against a freshman QB
December 31st, 2008 at 8:35 PM
Fetch- not sure if you’re watching it on delay but you’re a little behind on the score. Won’t ruin it for you.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:37 PM
fetch – soccer?
as for Oregon, you are aware they lost to Cal midseason, right? Oregon finished strong. that’s about it. to call a 3-loss team “dominant” seems like a bit much.
how was OSU doing last night before it lost its WR to the injury?
December 31st, 2008 at 8:37 PM
this tucker kid on depaul ain’t bad, huh?
December 31st, 2008 at 8:43 PM
really, rs? I’m not even watching it, it’s on the NHL network and I dont have it.
TBL- Hockey
December 31st, 2008 at 8:44 PM
Holy shit, I just dialed up justin.tv and I cant believe it.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:45 PM
4-3 Canada, just started the second. They are dominating the game right now. Yes, I’m watching hockey juniors instead of college basketball or football
December 31st, 2008 at 8:45 PM
nevermind..tie game
December 31st, 2008 at 8:52 PM
I think the argument was being made that Oregon was dominant once they got their mess at QB figured out. And how was OkSt doing last night before Bryant got hurt? Very well.
December 31st, 2008 at 8:54 PM
TBL, how many Pac-10 football games did you watch this year? It’s tough to listen to somebody shit on a conference when they don’t know anything about the teams in that conference.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:08 PM
awesome. i get out of the shower and it’s 35-3, LSU.
QQ – i did not watch every game of any conference this season. i watched games that were on TV as often as possible. so basically, all you’re saying is that in its last four games, Oregon was dominant? it rolled up big yardage offense against a couple of bowl-bound teams. sure, that’s a fact. bummer that nobody is judged on 1/3 of a season.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:17 PM
Sick O numbers for KU. Reesing, Briscoe, and Meier.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:18 PM
TBL- Keep the faith!
This coming from a guy that doesn’t care about his GT -4 bet as long as they hit the over.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:21 PM
rs are you Canadian? Or just from the northern US.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:24 PM
TBL – I understand but you still didn’t answer the question. My guess would be USC-Ohio State and USC-Oregon State and that’s about it. I was also never saying that Oregon should be a top 10 team. But I don’t think it is a stretch to say that Oregon is right now one of the best teams in the country. They lost a few games so they shouldn’t be ranked in the top ten (i guess) but if you knew their situation you can understand why they were playing much better in the last third of the season. I hate hate UO but have to acknowledge they are playing like an elite team. You didn’t even watch the Holiday Bowl?!
December 31st, 2008 at 9:26 PM
Fetch- From NJ, just love hockey and now I live in LA so I don’t get to watch much due to a variety of factors. I am excited for the Classic tomorrow though and am watching this Juniors game..
December 31st, 2008 at 9:53 PM
ND cover..book it
December 31st, 2008 at 9:54 PM
Canada won. It was tough to see too much of the action but they don’t look that much better than the US team. Looks like the gold medal game matchup to me.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:56 PM
Fetch- US got tired at the end but it seemed to me that the refs decided that the US wasn’t going to get a PP no matter what happened in that third period.
January 1st, 2009 at 7:53 AM
TBL, for the love of God, stay away from Ole Miss. Nutt’s Arkansas teams always had a “Gosh, we’re happy to be here so let’s just have some fun” vibe in bowl games. I think his bowl record is 2-5. Texas Tech has had time to heal up and will want to show why they’re one of the top five teams in the country. A big win would probably insure a top five finish, which is still a huge deal in Lubbock. Tech giving less than 10 is a pretty safe bet.
