The Big 12 is Fraudulent!
1-liner, College Football January 2nd. 2009, 4:39pmOle Miss: Go Rebels! Pick six for a score followed by a three-and-out for Harrell, and then a 65-yard-run for a TD that looks like it’ll be marked out at the 10-yard line. [UPDATE: Ole Miss choked. Texas Tech with three huge defensive stops and then missed a field goal. Dammit. The lead is only 31-21 with an eternity left in the third.] Boy, the Big 12 is lucky Missouri nipped Northwestern. Otherwise, they could be looking at Bowl losses by OK State, Texas Tech, and Missouri. Curious to see what happens with Texas Monday, and of course, the National Championship game.

another question. if Ole Miss wins this game, does that mean Snead > McCoy and Tebow? and since McCoy beat Bradford..
Snead for Heisman!
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:45 PM
Pat Sumerall is an abomination. the end of the half was just sad. He said Harrell didn’t get a 4th down sneak, then all of a sudden Texas Tech was running another play because he did get it. He didn’t know the half ended on Harell’s run. He didn’t know Harrell didn’t score. Geez, is Fox tying to make him look bad by trotting him out there?
By the way big swing there, Kick returner steps out at the 10 for no reason, and Ole Miss misses a chippy field goal. Watch out.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:47 PM
maybe next year, the Big 12 will spend more time on teaching defense.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:48 PM
even if they lose em all (i know mizzou won) the big xii would get another free pass, oklahoma would get fucked in another big BCS game and the big 10 would still be the public scapegoat.
/fuck the big xii
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:48 PM
i think kansas won their game as well as missouri.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:49 PM
QB Sneak on 4th and 4? This is hilarious.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:50 PM
@sparty. looks like that is what penn st spends all of their time on.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:51 PM
kansas is in the big xii? get outta here with that.
/oops
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:52 PM
way to go for it on 4th and 5 in your own zone, early in the 3rd. dumbshits
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:53 PM
TD ole miss! i can’t believe Leach went for it on 4th, and Ole Miss quickly responds with a TD. 37-21.
Texas Tech defense had that great stand, but looked absolutely gassed there. what was that drive, 3 plays, three runs, 50 yards?
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 PM
Don’t forget the Cornfuckers either
/point completely demolished
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 PM
@spencer. my boss and his wife were leaving the tx game at colombus when a charming(drunk) osu fan screamed that he hoped their plane crashed and that they died on their way home.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 PM
guys, the big 12-pac 10 thing was a joke.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 PM
but the Big 10 wasn’t being talked about as the big bad daddy. all you heard about was the record setting offenses of the Big 12. Well, that is because the Big 12 doesn’t play defense.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:55 PM
stick to sports and leave the humor to your commenters.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:57 PM
phuckin’ rabble-rouser…
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:57 PM
Remember all that “Harrell isn’t a system QB, he will do fine in the NFL” talk? Doubt it.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:57 PM
i mean shit, harrell has passed 40 times and has 188 yards, that is terrible.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:58 PM
Harrell = guy from Hawaii last year whose name I can’t remember…
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:59 PM
will probably save this link for next week, but curious if anyone saw #3 here and if there are any comments. feel free to email me in case you dont want to post here.

January 2nd, 2009 at 4:59 PM
Michael Crabtree = Kevin Dyson
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:59 PM
By the way, this should be exhibit A about how Graham Harell can’t function without 10 seconds in the pocket, he’s moving around all over the place. I think Harell could be an NFL QB if he plays for a team with a top 5 NFL offensive line. Outside of that he has no shot.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:01 PM
if Texas loses to an inferior OSU(from the big ten), then the big 12 will truly be the laughing stock of the bowl season.
/piss off OSU and Big 12 fans at the same time? check.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 PM
im sorry to hear that, but booze will do that to people.
i watched that same game in my buddy’s apartment in Flower Mound with 20 UT fans…i heard some stuff too.
i also took a dump in the back of the guy’s toilet which i presume he found a few days later. so i had the last laugh. HUZZAH!
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 PM
@ makblunt: Colt Brennan
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 PM
i still like harrell’s chances in the NFL. this defense held tebow to his lowest rating of the season and sacked him three times.
maybe it is just me, but i dont think harrell is the next colt brennan
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 PM
Whitlock wrote a pretty good column after the Mizzou game. Basically, he implied that defenses are catching up with the spread (or at least Mizzou’s version). Leech said ealier this year that it was bound to happen. Or, Big 12 teams just happen to not be playing Big 12 defenses in bowl games.
Speaking of Whitlock, he delivered a devastating forearm shiver to Deadspin today in his Foxsports column.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 PM
Ole Miss might hang 50 on them before this is over. Houston Nutt, the Browns would like to speak to you.
/tryin to tweak spencer.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 PM
Makblunt…remember when USC won back-to-back national championships? that was awesome.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:04 PM
Deadspin has dropped in quality, they’re still a few steps away from doing shoe commercials cloaked as interviews though.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:05 PM
Damn, TBL. I was typing as you were posting.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:05 PM
harrell is the all time TD leader (thanks to bad Big 12 defenses and throwing 50 times a game) and looks lost out there. He friggin sucks. Bradford won’t make it either.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:06 PM
almost had me, sparty.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:06 PM
I only remember last years game, Spence.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:07 PM
Spencer, you draft Ringer in the 2nd round, and him and Cribbs can run the wildcat together.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:07 PM
i just don’t see it. I really don’t. I think Brennan has an NFL arm at least and I don’t see it with Harell. At least with Brennan he was willing to take a hit and we’re not sure if he’s going to be any good anyways. Harell is always running around and has happy feet with ANY pressure. Ole Miss got to him a couple times early and Harell got extremely rattled.
Look what happened with Oklahoma. The same exact thing.
That doesn’t bode well for the NFL where QBs not named Manning take big shots..
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:07 PM
remember that time when you fucked your cousin?
/when you got nothing else to say, call em a cousin fucker
//as much as id love to stay, im outta here…have a nice weekend everyone
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:08 PM
color me skeptical…you guys might’ve used him a tad too much.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:08 PM
you obviously never saw the first drive of Eli’s career.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:08 PM
i haven’t noticed a drop in quality at deadspin, i think it’s always been a particular flavor that they’ve sought to cultivate there (typical gawker snarkiness), and I think it’s good in small doses, but not for a daily go-to read
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:09 PM
you only need him for a handful of plays.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:09 PM
i slept with my cousin two years ago spence. I can’t remember if it was when Fla beat ohio state in football or basketball for the title. Guess I’ll have to call her..
/be safe
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:11 PM
that’s called an upper decker, spence
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:11 PM
And Ole Miss’ defense is ranked 11th in the SEC against the pass in a conference where almost all the teams are run based teams. Thats not what I would call “good”
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:11 PM
Last I checked, Brennan was still in the NFL. Being a career backup QB is a sweet gig.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:12 PM
11th in the SEC would be top 3 in the Big 12.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:12 PM
I did, against the Eagles. I thought he was dead.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:12 PM
While they’re the topic of conversation, I think it’s sad that Erin Andrews is beating Buzz Bissinger in their poll for sports human of the year. Yes she’s hot, but he damn near killed their editor, and then saw what he did was wrong and tried to make it right. Sad how a pair of tits can cloud rational thought.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:14 PM
the best part was when they asked Tom Coughlin thought when it happened. his response: “Welcome to the NFL, kid.”
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:15 PM
Lance -
It was pointed out today on Deadspin that Andrews mysteriously garnered 1300 votes in two hours recently.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:15 PM
Someone used a macro, there was a thousand vote jump in like a two hour span in the middle of the night.
Naturally they’re all blaming the facebook users, but they’re the ones that nominated her in the first place.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:18 PM
Oh okay. So my next question is did TBL steal his idea for the culture tournament from Deadspin’s Sports Human of the Year, or vice-versa?
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:18 PM
I guess I’m a couple years late but the story about left tackle Michael Oher of Ole Miss is pretty cool.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/24/magazine/24football.html?ex=1316750400&en=e3741d62a638bb81&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=all
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:18 PM
I’m sort of ignorant on the whole Facebook/Myspace thing and I really have no idea what the Facebook/Deadspin connection is supposed to be.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:18 PM
erin andrews won the 2008 TBL Culture Tournament. handily. if she wins again in 2009 …
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:19 PM
lance – the culture tournament has been around longer. we had a 2007 and 2008. i made no secret that i “borrowed” it from the NY Times.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:20 PM
TBL, when does that begin?
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:20 PM
…..it’ll be because a sex tape was released.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:20 PM
the blind side was a great book about oher. another good book is the tender bar written by the same guy who wrote resurrecting the champ.(jr moeringer)
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:21 PM
the OLE miss RBs are just gashing this defense. harrell wont have a chance to bring them back unless the D can get a stop.
and if you want to hammer harrell for the bad games against OKL (on the road, where no QB does well), commend him for the great game against Texas at home.
my gosh, another HUGE hole for Ole Miss
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:22 PM
some dude has to get EA wicked drunk to get some slutty pics on her. i nominate Rexy.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:22 PM
shawn-does the book expand on this article? I’m thinking about buying it.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:23 PM
no set date yet, sparty. there will be ample heads up for nominations.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:26 PM
HE FUCKING FUMBLED AT THE 1!!!!!!
texas tech lives
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:26 PM
Texas- another game Harell sat in the pocket for 10 seconds.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:26 PM
SAFETY! what a game
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:27 PM
Will he be good in the pros? We will have to wait and see, but to use a first day pick on someone who never took a snap under center in college, is played behind an incredible OL, and buckles when he has dudes running after him; that is just Pittsburgh Pirates bad sports management right there.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:28 PM
@rs27 the entire story is fascinating. michael lewis(moneyball) wrote it. it is definitely worth buying.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:29 PM
didnt i say a few weeks back that if snead stays, ole miss will be a force next year? i need to check that o-line.
(yes, fully aware how good anyone can look against TT)
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:30 PM
snead is definitely staying. have you heard that he might leave?
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:31 PM
tech has always been tough at home and bad on the road.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:31 PM
Okay TBL I was just wondering because I started visiting here in summer 2007, and had no idea how long deadspin had been doing their poll. In any case I wasn’t trying to accuse anyone of stealing, just curious as to where it came from; the idea of a tournament-poll of newsworthy people seems common enough to originate anywhere.
Can’t wait for Leach’s postgame press conference.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:32 PM
the TT o-line is “incredible?” on what planet? the “system” is strong, and works. my first question is what he’ll look like when he’s not in shotgun
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:33 PM
That’ll probably do it.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:34 PM
no worries. i actually did one of the most popular (at the time) features at CBS Sportsline – the hot girlfriends/wives poll. was actually quite fun. i left shortly after to start my own gig here.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:37 PM
TBL- Are you serious? That O line is amazing at TT. I’ve seen about 6 or TT games (because their games are fun) and Harell never gets touched and they open up huge running holes for the backs. The only games he’s gotten hit at all were gainst Oklahoma and today.
I’m pretty sure their top 10 in sack allowed.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 PM
Takes guts to leave a steady job to start your own thing, and I have a lot of respect for that. This brings up a few questions: 1) Did CBS try to keep you around with a raise or promotion? 2) How did they respond when you told them about starting this? 3) Has there been any response from them since this became the force that it is today?
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 PM
Game
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 PM
TD Ole miss … now lead by 19 with 4:40 left. LOVE IT.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 PM
Will was a creep but at least Deadspin was funny and entertaining when it was just him and Rick. Now, there are 19 guest-writers, the lay-out is unreadable, and they still employ “The Maj.” So, yeah, I don’t go there very often.
But I see Daulerio has responded already.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 PM
“The offensive line allowed only 11 sacks on the season in 604 pass attempts and the led the country with only one sack allowed per every 55 pass attempts. Rylan Reed allowed only one sack in over 500 passing attempts by Harrell. Sophomore RB Baron Batch leads the Red Raider rushing attack with 61.8 ypg, while averaging 6.7 ypc”
That’s pretty damn incredible
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:44 PM
well technically, i was freelancing at CBS Sports. i had been at ESPN and then my editor left i didnt click with any of the other folks there (or, they just hated my shit, who knows), and pitched stuff to CBS.
the whole time i was working the Us Weekly gig. the blog became this nightly/early morning hobby that kind of took off. quit us weekly about 12 1/2 months ago and been my own boss since. still know that one day i’ll have to get a desk job to pay the bills, but i’ll hold off on that as long as possible.
just your averaging hustlin’ story
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 PM
oh, and CBS def didn’t try to keep me. i lost interest in the gig and eventually started doing the blog. it was more fun than writing stuff for CBS sports.
(plus, CBS sports paid very little, esp compared to ESPN)
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:47 PM
Where does the Nebraska victory over Clemson fit into this?
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:49 PM
damn, harrell just got HAMMERED
guy looked like a missile coming off the end
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:50 PM
Hopefully The Big Lead goes above and beyond in 2009, and while I’m going to focus a lot more on college and you know, enjoying this phase of my life, I’ll drop by when I can. Thanks for answering all the questions and for providing all the entertainment here. Now I need to shower, eat, and go watch Texas play Applachian State in men’s basketball. Doubt it’ll be on TV.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:51 PM
damn i hope tx and ou win and i hate ou.
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:53 PM
oh shit, i think TT got that onside kick. they still need two TDs to blow my cover … but Ole Miss recovers
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:55 PM
OH AND ONE MORE THING: Being that you and Will Leitch are based in New York, have you ever ran into each other or tried to meet up? If so, what was that like, and if not why not?
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:57 PM
Does this still mean that USC has a better loss than Florida?
/best team ever’d
January 2nd, 2009 at 5:58 PM
Wow Ole Miss schedule is nice next year. They get LSU and Bama at home and don’t play Florida or Georgia. They have one date that needs to be filled but I’m sure that will be filled by The Citadel or someone of that ilk.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:01 PM
RS, do you have any thoughts on Bama-Utah?
before you say something, take a look at this brief analysis on TT-Ole Miss
and here’s that same analysis for Utah-Alabama.
kinda makes you want to lean …
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:02 PM
Ole Miss definitely benefits from the SEC scheduling. Each team gets one yearly opponent from the other conference. LSU gets Florida, Auburn gets Georgia, and Alabama gets Tennessee.
Ole Miss gets Vanderbilt
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:05 PM
i’d schedule a cupcake
long story short … two years before deadspin emerged, Nick Denton of gawker had an idea for a sports blog. i worked with their Manag Ed. at the time on a baseball-online blog. one month (good pay for 2004). like a month later, the ME left the gawker family (he later returned and left again), and i was kind of left hanging. site never happened.
two years later … leitch and i meet up for a beer about 6 months before deadspin emerged. he was looking for a wingman, but i was freelancing for espn at the time and clearing some good coin. he never made an offer … but i didn’t think giving up the ESPN $ to play 2nd fiddle was worth it, and we continued to talk on email, but that was it. of course, as shit happens, ESPN editor left a few months later, then i went to cbs sportsline, then i started a blog, i guess about 4-5 months after deadspin started.
the end
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:09 PM
on the flip side Jay, Vandy gets Ole Miss.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:42 PM
Jay- Ole Miss plays tennessee next year too..
TBL- I’ve liked Utah since the line has come out but it’s moved a couple of points and now I’m leaning Bama. How is Utah going to score? TCU shut them down until the last drive and now they’re playing a defacto road game. This ain’t Pittsburgh they’re playing. My friend is at the game tonight and she said New Orleans has all Bama fans there and almost zero Utah people. It’s interesting. I’m laying the nine because I just can’t see how Utah moves the ball tonight. I really can’t. If someone can tell me how they score I will be more than happy taking Utah.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:43 PM
Nevermind Jay, I read your comment wrong.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Leitch actually gave Deadspin a voice and whether contrived or real, his whole Midwestern-Great Gatsbyesque modesty mixed well with the often vile nature of the site. Daulerio isn’t a bad writer but with so many posters it was impossible to get a sense of his voice within the first month of his takeover. Deadspin reads much more like a news site now rather than a blog with a voice.
Also, did anyone read the original Hugh Johnson Projects edited by the Mighty MJD a couple of years ago? That shit was absolutely amazing.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:58 PM
Tennessee’s going to be an interesting team to keep an eye on over the next couple of years. I’m curious as to exactly where the talent level is, and what Monte Kiffin is going to be able to do with the defense.
One thing’s for sure though, with Orgeron there, they are going to be a force in recruiting.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:00 PM
Worst redesign
1) Deadspin
2) Bangbros
3) Whatever abortion of ads espn.com is about to roll out
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:34 PM
RS – interesting take on Utah. like the man-on-the-ground stuff. i just fear a letdown for bama. they lost their last game – which was basically a national semifinal game. how tough will it be to regroup against utah?
Utah’s best lineman goes against Smith’s fill-in on the line. utah’s defense wasn’t shabby, either. 9 is a lot for an alabama team that just doesn’t score very often.
4 out of 5 picks here are alabama. you saw the above link. when the herd goes one way …
small play on utah +9
mole, that bangbros line is hilarious.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:38 PM
nature of the beast. as your site grows, the audience grows, and the money-making potential does, as well. more posts = more opportunity for profit. the audience has grown enormously since AJ took over. yet some people think the site’s quality isn’t as high.
this is a problem i grapple with. how to grow the site without sacrificing what made it what it is today (which is … heck, who knows)?
i have a few ideas for 2009 i plan on chatting over with the “crew” this weekend. hopefully, they will be well-received. also, we’ll be looking for 2009 interns (two every year!), so that’ll be fun
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:44 PM

TBL: Wish you well in 2009. Enjoy the site (except for soccer posts-lol). To me, Deadspin was never “easy on the eyes” to read, and never really got into it that much. I go there about once/week.
Keep the sports and “non-sports” stuff (I know some people on here want sports only. Personally, I like the mix)
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Dude, I’m not kidding, Bangbros did a site revamp and it’s horrible. You should NEVER have to sidescroll on a site’s homepage.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:47 PM
guys – site’s going to go down for a minute or two … should be back for the game.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:47 PM
RS27 –
If you’re still around, we reviewed The Blind Side just a few weeks ago, if you wanna check it out.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 PM
I went to Deadspin first but then I came here. Got much more hooked on this site for the most part because I am actually allowed to post here.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:54 PM
PE- Thanks for the review. I haven’t read moneyball but I’m buying this book. I like the way it sounds.
TBL- I know Utah’s defense is good but I think this game has 21-6 written all over it. Of course I also thought GT was going to hammer LSU. These SEC teams, for whatever reason, love playing these bowl games.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:55 PM
TBL –
agree with JPQ, I like that you have non-sports stuff here too. It makes your voice authentic. Even if I dissmiss/ dislike some of it, I like the idea that that suggests that this is not so much some “official” sports blog, but rather just your website
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:11 PM
SEC in bowl games?
Vandy was AWFUL and got lucky in beating BC. the received a few major gifts from BC and had no business winning that game.
South Carolina got worked.
Georgia stunk up the joint.
Texas Tech proved it was an ordinary team away from home
I do find it easy to root against Saban
PE – Thanks, man.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:16 PM
SEC might go 7-1 in bowl games.
Isn’t that more impressive than the Pac-10 going 5-0?
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:18 PM
Same here. I’m a big fan of the site, even if TBL’s never met a cheap shot at the Colts/Manning he wouldn’t take and we have very different taste in movies. Besides, where else does one little blog commenter get to inspire so much hatred because he’s an admitted homer/apologist for a certain NFL team?
I do hate Tar Baby, though. Hope McDreamy stabs him.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:29 PM
hahahaha
7-0 utah as the utes put on a clinic on the opening drive. 3 straight first downs, nice catch, and then TD. alabama looks like it just crawled out of bed.
playing for perfection counts as inspiration.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:34 PM
Dig the sports with a light dusting of celeb nonsense. I wouldn’t have a clue where 1/2 the roundup chicks came from if isn’t wasn’t for this site. I’m not sure that’s a good thing, but eye candy is fun.
playing for perfection counts as inspiration.
That sounds exactly like something Marty Schottenheimer would say. Awesome.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Hey Saban, how’s that throbbing Mormon cock in your ass right now feel, buddy? You might also want to lay off those Lil Debbie snackcakes, cuz you got some serious bitch tits in that white polo, you fucking snake…
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Wow. Is Utah gonna run away this this one?
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Bama definitely looks awful right now, but Ole Miss was down 14-0 and UK was down 16-3, so it’s definitely not over.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 PM
sec = fraud
/as much as the big 12
//seriously, the sec defenses could be the most overrated ever
///this is so fucking awesome watching saban get throttled
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:40 PM
boy, utah looks fast
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:43 PM

where is illformula? probably sitting in the corner at home sucking his thumb…
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:53 PM
I’m not a huge fan of people saying things like this, but it’s just so obvious.
Utah wants this more.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:54 PM
And is Saban in tears?
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 PM
21-0
/wow, alabama is fucking turrible
//this is just awesome
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:56 PM
2nd
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:56 PM
so if they thrash bama, is it really an upset? since bama would have two losses, and Utah would be undefeated and all?
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:58 PM
utah > USC
someone better vote for 13-0 utah as national champs
off to the movies
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:59 PM
yes, because the rest of the country believes that Utah sucks and the SEC is awesome! Turns out, maybe Utah isn’t so bad, and maybe the defense in the SEC is not as good as all the hype.
/The BCS is fucking retarded, this game is exactly why a playoff would be better. Who wouldn’t want to watch a second round where Utah could be playing USC, or Virginia Tech?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I live in Florida….I can’t stand all the SEC BS that is talked all year. Is it like this in every big conference market? “Our conference is the best in the nation, everyone can’t see it?”…..most annoying part of college football.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 PM
Yeah, I cant wait to see what VA Tech and Ole Miss and Utah can do in the 2nd round of the playoffs..
/other universe’d
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:02 PM
You seeing Bedtime Stories?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:02 PM
Holy shit! The Utah defense is ridiculously fast.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:04 PM
That looked like offsides to me…but hey, wouldn’t want to kill the momentum!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 PM
So if the SEC goes 6-2 (looks like 7-1 is out now) that makes them frauds?
Considering that everyone thought the SEC was the 2nd best conference behind the Big 12 wouldn’t being the 2nd best in the bowl games be about what people would expect?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 PM
(looks like 7-1 is out now)
Well let’s not go crazy now, there are 45 minutes of game left to play.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:09 PM
To be honest, I haven’t seen every bowl game….didn’t plan on watching most of them since they all looked like snoozers. And, I am only gloating on this shit because there’s nothing better than watching on of the prides of a conference get thrashed by what is supposed to be the worst 12-0 team in the nation.
As far as the defense comments go, there’s no disputing they are overrated, they are giving up ridiculous points in these bowl games….from the looks of it, the SEC is the worst defensive conference in the nation.
/really, I don’t care, I just love talking shit when Saban is getting crushed
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:11 PM
I’m calling it now, call me crazy…GAME OVER
The Tide offense couldn’t look worse, and their defense can’t even get set before each play.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:18 PM
I’m torn. I’m an SEC homer through and through. But the thought of Saban and Alabama getting raped on national TV makes me smile…
If Utah goes undefeated and Florida beats Oklahoma, Do Utah split the title or win straight out?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:18 PM
bama scores a TD on this drive, we have a ballgame
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:20 PM
I really don’t think it’s over yet. Saban makes second half adjustments just as well as Belicheat…
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:20 PM
Um. Interference?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:21 PM
nah, underthrown. JP Wilson sucks.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:21 PM
Oregon State > Alabama
If bowl games only counted.
/TBL’d
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 PM
wonder if his ingram’s dad gets to watch this from his cell?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 PM
sorry, no interference for the team with momentum.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:23 PM
I’m torn. I’m an SEC homer through and through. But the thought of Saban and Alabama getting raped on national TV makes me smile…
I’m not torn. Fuck Nick Saban.
And if Utah wins, there is ZERO rationale that you can use to say that USC can be ranked ahead of them.
“Well, we all know USC would beat Utah” is a bullshit argument.
USC lost to Oregon State. Utah didn’t. Period. I don’t care how much NFL talent USC has. That is not how you’re supposed to vote. You’re supposed to vote based on what happened on the field this year.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:24 PM
that is a huuuuuuge miss
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:24 PM
missed it!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:25 PM
get your logic out of here
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:25 PM
They cannot keep settling for field goals… they should have played that like it was 4 down territory there.. stop going for the home run every play.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:26 PM
get your logic out of here
You work for ESPN, sparty?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:26 PM
and i totally agree, FUCK SABAN.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:27 PM
no, i am just not use to seeing people use that here.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:27 PM
Gee sparty, now why would you say that?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:27 PM
I agree too, thanks Jay for helping me see the light!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:30 PM
as far as those calling the SEC defenses overrated. Not nearly as overrated as the offenses of the Big 12.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 PM
If you actually had watched both those games you would have seen that Oregon State outplayed both. They outplayed Utah in SLC and USC in Corvallis. So, are you voting only on results or are you voting on what you see?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 PM
he is one hell of a punt returner.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 PM
DAMMIT!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:33 PM
Alabama is going to win this game
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:33 PM
That said I wouldn’t fault a voter for putting Utah ahead of USC though I think it is clear USC is the better team.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:33 PM
last i checked a win is always better than a loss.
fuck it, take this NT back fellas, we were totally outplayed in a couple games that we won…
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:35 PM
That was the dumbest thing I’ve read all day. One team beat Oregon St., the other lost. who cares how pretty it was?
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:37 PM
so what if Miami lost to Ohio State in 2003? they were clearly the better team in that game and all year long…
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:40 PM
Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate…ack!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:41 PM
Notre Dame clearly outplayed USC in that Reggie Bush Push game…
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:41 PM
the officials had never seen anything like that.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:41 PM
A voter might when trying to decide who the better team is. I don’t give a shit if Utah is ranked higher than USC at the end of the year. I do think it matters how a team wins, who a team plays, how a team is playing when they matchup, and where their wins and losses occur (neutral field/home/away).
Oregon State beating USC at home is different than Utah getting lucky against Oregon State in SLC.
If only wins and losses matter does that mean Oregon was better than Oklahoma when the shitty Pac-10 officials HANDED the game to UO a few years ago? Oklahoma was the better team and the game was in Eugene. All I am saying is there are usually other factors to consider.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:42 PM
It’s hard to make sense with all the Pac-10 teams’ dicks in your mouth.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 PM
Don’t disagree with that. Game was also in South Bend.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 PM
What’s funny is their coach was talking to the official right before the play, I guarantee he was telling him what was going to happen, and it didn’t matter.
Although, kinda bs to be able to get that call, kind of like the hidden ball trick. That’s not real football. I like the chicanery though.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:44 PM
Better than having Kenny Chesney’s dick in your mouth.
/Peyton Manning’d
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:44 PM

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:46 PM

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:46 PM

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:49 PM

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:50 PM
not a good start to the 2nd half for bama.

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:54 PM
knicks defense just looked like a high school JV team
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:55 PM
You should really stop making shit up.
Utah is the only 12-0 team, so you say they’re the worst, I’ll say they’re the best.
I think it’s quite clear that the Big 12 defenses are the worst in the country. The SEC has had 3 teams hold teams to 14 or less. I wouldn’t call that the worst defense in the country.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:56 PM
jarrett jack hits a jumper with .9 to go, 105-103 pacers
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:05 PM
God. I hate Kenny Albert so much. The only broadcaster I hate more is Kevin Harlan.
I mean, godspeed to them both. I wish them both great success in life. I just wish they weren’t in my TV …
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:09 PM
Haha. The thread on Awful Announcing is counting the amount of band shots for Fox..
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:14 PM
I actually like Kenny Albert, he’s extremely solid, in my not-so humble opinion. And I am a self-proclaimed expert on the media who doesn’t actually bash Pam Ward (heard her doing radio today for the ECU/Kentucky game, thought he was pretty good, better than on TV actually).
But nobody like Ward b/c of the obvious reasons, like the fact that she and Sean Mcdonough have a ton in common).
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:18 PM
dammit. Alabama ball.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:19 PM
I hate watching Kenny Albert speak. He’s like those Jay Leno skits where they have a picture of some famous dude but only the lips move when the picture talks. this makes no sense. Anyhow. Kenny is a bit stiff, but has a voice for radio.
Bama is going to win this or this will be a repeat of the OU/BSU game.
Holy Jebus. College can review a play in 20 seconds but it takes the NFL a commercial break. Oh wait, i get it.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 PM
knowing is half the battle, KC.
Extra point is good… commercial.
kickoff, returned 18 yards… commercial
reviewing the kickoff to see where his foot went out of bounds… commercial
21-17 looks like Utah sucks after all…
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:31 PM
Mak -
Commercials after kickoffs make me want to stab my out of date tv. I get it, yet I don’t. I hate it, but I still watch. Thank god for booze.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:32 PM
Yutes!
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:32 PM
alabama tackles like a big 12 team… 28-17
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:35 PM
I’m enjoying this game. I guess I just like watching my Superdome in Jan. Watched the massacre that Georgia put on Hawaii last year…
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:35 PM
It’s the texture of Kenny Albert’s voice. He sounds so thick, gray and dotted — like a dried out moldy sponge.
The sound of his voice is the same reason I hate mushrooms.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:37 PM
JP Wilson sucks. Wasn’t his fault that time, just like saying that…
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:40 PM
mushrooms changed my life.
Barry Switzer said it best at half time I think, the Moutain West should have an automatic BCS Berth, they have continued to put out quality talent over these last 4-5 years, they are a quality conference.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:47 PM
if the utes score here it’s over.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Bama looks like they slept walked through the last 5 weeks of practice. Terrible tackling, their offensive line couldn’t blow a hole in a wet paper bag, JPW still sucks, and Jones can’t catch a cold.
Credit to Utah for coming out and playing well. Still think that Bama pulls it out late, but props to the Utes for a well played game plan whether they hang on or not…
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:17 PM
95% of Big Lead “responders” think those drinkability commercials by bud light suck a hard d.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:22 PM
which is why bowl games are a terrible barometer for anything. alabama lost its NC game to florida. what’s left to play for? don’t give me this pride shit.
now if you’re unbeaten like utah is …
(haven’t seen anything since it was 7-0, just tracked score on celly)
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:27 PM
Great game JPW.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:29 PM
7 sacks for utah tonight. that forced fumble will make it tough for Alabama to comeback. it’s 3rd and about 5 … a first down here almost certainly seals it.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:30 PM
Utah should be in the BCS Championship game.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:32 PM
And to think Tampa Bo, Michigan almost beat them. Maybe Rich Rod is not as far off as some may think.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:32 PM
JP Wilsom does indeed suck…But am impressed with the Utah QB…Guy has done a great job.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:34 PM
so who gets more 1st place votes: USC or Utah?
USC destroyed the best team in the Big 10.
Utah went undefeated and beat up on the 2nd best the SEC had to offer – a team that was ranked No. 1 this season.
i really, really hope somebody gives utah a 1st place vote. i’d rather it NOT be a writer in Utah, but beggars cant be choosers
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:34 PM
Good call TBl, Should have listened
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:34 PM
TBL, what about Texas if they manhandle OSU and OU beats Florida?
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:35 PM
Can you believe if we had a Playoff? March What? Utah as a Cinderella would be tremendous. They just want it more and Bama is playing like they expected this team to roll over for them….Ignorant asses.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:35 PM
man, this FG worries me. blocked and run back for a TD?
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:35 PM
TBL,
Bowl games don’t mean much? I think some poor Alabama housewife that is going to get shot tonight would have a different opinion to offer up.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:36 PM
And to think Tampa Bo, Michigan almost beat them. Maybe Rich Rod is not as far off as some may think.
Funny.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:39 PM
Got him again. Kind of embarrassing to be a Bama O lineman tonight.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:40 PM
CC – hadn’t thought of that scenario. texas DID beat OKL on a neutral field. but the TT beatdown today hurts Texas (me thinks), although winning at TT just wasn’t happening this year – for anyone
that’s 8 sacks
how has julio jones done? Green didn’t do jack for UGA in its bowl game …
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:41 PM
TBL – 7 catches 77 yards, long of 30
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:41 PM
Is this anywhere near as embarrassing as OSU losing to Florida?
/please say yes, please say yes
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:43 PM
Utah = the better team. Too much quick for the second best team in the SEC.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:44 PM
lol
as for the tourney scenario, i HIGHLY doubt we’d see alabama this listless.
wonder if the TT loss hurts the psyche of Texas. wonder if UT thought it had a chance if TT won and UF won a close game and Alabama lost. no clue, just putting it out there.
i find it hard to believe OSU will give half a shit … they had sights on a title this year, and the season was a disaster.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:45 PM
So who has Florida beaten this year again? What’s their big win?
/just sayin
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:45 PM
Am an SEC guy…But this was a solid beating….Am impressed….Alabama is disgusting.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:47 PM
UF beat that Ole Miss team that spanked Texas Tech.
Oh. Right …
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:49 PM
Can you believe if we had a Playoff? March What? Utah as a Cinderella would be tremendous. They just want it more and Bama is playing like they expected this team to roll over for them….Ignorant asses.
If we had a plus one, Utah would have still been locked out because all the thumb-dick voters would still be playing the “what if USC played Utah on a neutral field” card and put them in it instead.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:49 PM
The Citadel
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:49 PM
I’m just having fun with the SEC b/c of the fun they’ve had with the Big 10.. I still don’t think any of this bowl nonsense necessarily means anything.
But let’s still have some fun.. (anyone chanting Mountain West, Mountain West tonight?)
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:50 PM
Not to jock this obvious connection but one would have to think that Whittingham and Meyer had to have a few conversations in the previous few weeks about ‘Bama. How much impact would that have on the field? Who really knows but I can guarantee that Meyer’s $.02 didn’t hurt the Utes game plan.
BTW….TBL called it.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:52 PM
Who’s to say USC would even get in if Texas wins?
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Why would Meyer want to do anything to tarnish Florida’s only “quality” win. Doesn’t make sense.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:53 PM
If that stage was a prison then Chris Meyer would be somebody’s bitch right now.
You just can’t let someone snatch your mic like that!
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:54 PM
So who has Florida beaten this year again? What’s their big win?
The Citadel. And nine bowl teams.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:56 PM
The Mountain West should get the Big East’s automatic bid.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:56 PM
Clown,
It doesn’t matter because if the Gators win on Tuesday they are the BCS champs and wouldn’t matter if ‘Bama won by 40 or lost by 40.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:58 PM
Jay, sorry, I should have realized that beating Kentucky/Hawaii/Vandy/South Carolina/Florida State should be considered “big” wins.
Of course, as an OSU fan, I have no room to talk, but we’re talking about Florida’s claim as an “elite” team this year .
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 AM
I fall in line with those that think a 8 game football playoff would greatly enhance Bowl Season. I just can’t think of a way for fans to be expected to travel 3 weekends in a row to random spots across the map.
A big hat tip to Utah and the amount of fans they had tonight at the Sugar Bowl. Great game. Up big early, withstood a charge, and made a joke of SEC SPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDD football. Seriously, Utah was equally as fast. Few gimmicks or flukeish plays. Utah just did it.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:09 AM
cursed, I’m not a Florida fan either, but no other competitors have any greater claim, unless you want a Texas/Oklahoma rematch.
Just for example, USC “signature win” came against Ohio State before Pryor took over full-time. Oh yeah, and Notre Dame. Utah didn’t have a big win. Penn State won in Columbus, but we’ve already seen that they’re frauds. For that matter, who has Oklahoma beaten except for a Texas Tech team that was exposed as a fraud?
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:10 AM
What qualifies as a good team anymore? If Vandy/South Carolina/ FSU aren’t good teams then no team outside of a BCS game is any good. We can play that game forever with every team in college football.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:18 AM
Utah’s pretty good. Maybe somebody should like, play them.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:23 AM
Utah’s pretty good. Maybe somebody should like, play them.
Why would an elite team play them? This way, you can play common opponents, have Utah beat them, and then still hear that the elite team is better because they had more 5-star recruits coming out of high school.
/USC’d
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:39 AM
They had the Longhorns on the schedule this year, but Urban Meyer backed out of it.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:41 AM
I guess my point was, Utah’s pretty good. But, we’ll never know how good. Because none of us have the balls to stop watching these pointless bowl games and really make a playoff happen.
God. I hate myself more than I hate Kenny Albert’s voice …
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:26 AM
I guess the Sugar Bowl is just more proof of how unbelievable the mighty SEC is and how AWFUL the Pac 10 is…Or State loses by 3 AT UTAH and Bama (roll TIDE) gets punched in the face on a neutral field IN THE SOUTH……
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:44 AM
Oh if only bowl games mattered…I could lament about how Alabama got embarrassed by Utah yet Oregon State was a bullshit pass interference call away from victory in Salt Lake City. If only bowl games mattered. And whoever said that USC’s signature win was over the crappy version of Ohio State “oh, and Notre Dame” forgets that they dominated Oregon even after Oregon had figured out how to run their offense with their 3rd string QB.
Pac-10 > SEC
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:47 AM
And it makes me happy that nobody would respond to the last paragraph of this.
A win’s a win…right? No?
January 3rd, 2009 at 8:44 AM
I will, USC is ghey.
