Atlanta-Arizona: Different Directions
NFL January 3rd. 2009, 3:00pm
Which Cardinals team will show up? The one that opened the season 7-3, including home wins over previously-unbeaten Buffalo and Dallas? Or the one that cratered at season’s end, stumbling to a 9-7 finish and resulting in deflating quotes such as this one from Kurt Warner:
When asked if the team’s confidence was waning, he added, “I think so. I mean, you put a couple of performances together like we have the last two weeks and you definitely don’t feel invincible.”
Lost amid the chatter of how terrific rookie QB Matt Ryan was this season for the Falcons: He struggled down the stretch. Perhaps struggle is too harsh of a word, but in the final four games, he threw five interceptions against just three scores, and two of his worst three QB rating games occurred in those final four games. Also worth noting: Atlanta went 3-1 in those games to get into the playoffs, and nearly stole the No. 2 seed from Carolina. Are we looking for anything to back up our Arizona prediction? Probably.
We’re not entirely sure yet how we’ll react to watching Atlanta vs. Arizona in the playoffs. It just sounds odd, doesn’t it? When you hear Atlanta, do you still think of Mike Vick? Does Arizona recall days of Jake Plummer? That seems to be the last time either of these teams mattered.
While Atlanta seems to be building something with Ryan and Turner at the nucleus, if Arizona loses, the team could find itself at a crossroads.
Kurt Warner is a free agent, and if he is re-signed, Matt Leinart surely will ask for a trade. Edgerrin James is on his way out, leaving the team without an established running back. Anquan Boldin has two years left on his contract, and his stance has not changed one bit. He believes the organization lied to him, and his situation needs to be resolved.
Seattle’s going to rebound next year. Maybe Singletary’s 49ers carry their second half success into next year. Who knows how long it could be before Arizona reaches the postseason again.

That sums it up quite well for me. When I hear Arizona, I think of a franchise filled with failure, while with Atlanta, I think of Eugene Robinson getting a hooker.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:25 PM
Good god that would be one of the funniest things ever. What could they get for him, a fourth rounder maybe?
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:27 PM
As was pointed out to me a couple days ago, the Seahawks have fewer holes to fill this offseason than Arizona. The Niners, on the other hand, will stink again next year.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:28 PM
When I think of Atlanta I think of the Dirty Bird.
/Jamal Anderson
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:32 PM
So people are just penciling in Hasselbeck, in his mid thirties, to bounce right back from back and knee injuries? I like it!
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:34 PM
anyone see Arizona is now the favorite? I got AZ at +1 earlier today … AZ is now -1.5
somebody get hurt in the last couple hours?
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:38 PM
seattle’s O-line was i believe entirely injured this year. the WRs missed a ton of time, too.
how much they bounce back probably depends on their coach and their first-round pick.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:44 PM
Az is the favorite now? I wish I had held off on my Atlanta wager, I took them -1.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Also how they handle guys like Bobby Engram and Leroy Hill becoming free agents. Will they franchise Hill? Can they replace Engram’s production?
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Buffalo got smoked in their bowl game. Turner Gill is 15-23 at Buffalo. How did he NOT get the Auburn job? Gene Chizik sucks too.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 PM
Which is about the equivalent of 94-2 anywhere else.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 PM
Buffalo got smoked in their bowl game. Turner Gill is 15-23 at Buffalo. How did he NOT get the Auburn job? Gene Chizik sucks too.
If Buffalo doesn’t get a Hail Mary to beat Temple (Temple, for God’s sake), Buffalo is the #6 team in the MAC
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:50 PM
Call me crazy but I would be a lot more concerned about players recovering from season long injuries being a factor of how they will fair next year rather than who they draft in the first round. Granted you also said the Jets will solve their problems in the first two rounds of the draft this year when they drafted Gholston last year, so I’ve gotta get some of those rosey glasses you’ve got.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:50 PM
I just saw that someone’s groin tendon is detached on the ESPN clicker. Any guess as to who it is?
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:51 PM
LT
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:53 PM
I agree, TBL. Mora Jr worries me. Also, Walter Jones’ knee injury could be pretty serious. Microfracture surgery for a 34 year old LT? Still, Seattle has some flexibility with their top 5 pick. OL, DL, QB, and WR are all options depending on what they do in free agency.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:55 PM
Fetch -
That was too easy. Also, KU has finally figured out the alley oop today. Good win. Big week. Sienna and then Michigan St.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Also I’d like to thank TBL for getting rid of the hockey posts, as I now have one less place to be reminded of how terrible the Penguins are, how bad their coach is, how incompetent their GM is, and how fucking horrendous their third uniforms are. GOD DAMNIT
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Peterson could be gone too to save some $. If Peterson is gone I think they have to franchise Hill. They may need to regardless though his often piss-poor performance in pass coverage is maddening.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:58 PM
And if they decide that Taylor Mays is worth it, he’ll get a hard look, as Brian Russel was as bad a starter as you’ll ever see in the NFL. I’m not a huge fan of drafting safeties that high (you can usually find them in free agency, and there are good ones in later rounds of the draft), but that’s the one position where they can upgrade the fastest if they were so inclined.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:00 PM
while with Atlanta, I think of Eugene Robinson getting a hooker.
I think of Jeff George sassing June Jones
Or a half-full stadium
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:03 PM
I can not wait until Russell is off this team. He is an abortion of an NFL player. I would love to see Taylor Mays in Seattle’s defensive backfield next year. Agree on using a high pick on a safety. Perhaps trading down but I don’t see a good matchup in a deal.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:13 PM
God I’m an idiot, why did I expect this game to actually start at four and there not be forty minutes of pointless pregame shit?
If the abbreviated versions of games (only actual plays) that they show on the NFL Network or whatever were the actual games, this would be the best sport ever.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:15 PM
Hey mole, I see you the Pens, and raise you the Wild. This is going to be a long second half of the season.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:19 PM
Must really suck for you, there is no way in hell anyone takes Gaborik for anything but ten cents on the dollar at this point.
Except Ray Shero, who will probably offer you four first round picks for him.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:20 PM
BTW everyone, those new Cheesy Bacon Gordita Crunches from Taco Bell? Suck.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:21 PM
If the abbreviated versions of games (only actual plays) that they show on the NFL Network or whatever were the actual games, this would be the best sport ever.
moleman, DVR the game and start watching it an hour late. That’s what I’ve started doing
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:22 PM
Nope, that little fucker is gone and we’re not even going to get the sanctity of a reach around. At least this will maybe shove the GM out the door.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:33 PM
37-31 Falcons.
Go Matty Ice!
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:37 PM
i can help it the jets took the biggest bust in the 1st round?
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 PM
well, that was a wasted first possession. 3 passes and punt. fucking idiots. sorry for the salty language and anger … with $ on the line, im not happy with this start.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:40 PM
hockey posts will come back, that was just a holiday thing
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:43 PM
I just hope the vikings win so the Giants can play one of these two teams.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:44 PM
Bring The Anger. It is the playoffs.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:46 PM
great catch
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:46 PM
holy shit fitz!!!!!!!
7-0!!!!!!!
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:47 PM
“This kid is sick” – well said, Mr. Collinsowrth
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:47 PM
wow, that’s just incredible. what a grab. let’s get LOUD in phoenix and get a 3-and-out here
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:50 PM
I catch passes one-handed while wearing headphones.
/Fitz’d
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:50 PM
I picked Atlanta to win… but this Arizona crowd is so pumped up it’s hard not to feel the momentum.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:51 PM
Everyone read my NFL picks column.
/Simmons
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:52 PM
No, but you can help not making assumptions that the Jets will solve their problems in the first two rounds on this years draft when they blew their first rounder last year and had a high pick.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:52 PM
movement, push em back 5
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:56 PM
If the Cardinal’s stadium is nicknamed the Pink Taco, shouldn’t we refer to Camelback Mountain as Cameltoe Mountain?
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 PM
Everyone’s watching the NC State / Florida game on CBS, right?
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:59 PM
re: Jets – they bungled the draft pick, which hurt the defense. if the jets had drafted well, and picked, say, Mayo (who went 4 picks later), or even Harvey (held out, didn’t really get in the mix, but still had better stats than Gholston), the defense is probably stronger.
you really dont think the draft can solve problems? nobody’s saying you’re going to turn a defense from worst to first, but i think a team can definitely improve with the right high draft pick.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:00 PM
UF-NC State is u-g-l-y
greg anthony isnt a bad analyst, but Gus is so dominant, you hardly notice
i think both of these are bubble teams, anyway
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:03 PM
I’m very impressed with Anthony as an analyst. Really solid so far.
I’d be thrilled if NCSU finishes the season as a bubble team. I’m not very optimistic.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:04 PM
Of course it can, I was saying noone can assume it will though when looking to the next season (Jets, Seattle, etc).
Atlanta looking realllllllllllly fraudulent early on
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:05 PM
So this was all part of Arizona’s master plan, right? “Rest” Edge all season, so that he can run roughshod in the playoffs? Yup, that’s what I thought.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:09 PM
Where the hell did this defense come from? Ryan not looking too hot under defensive pressure thus far.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:12 PM
geez, it hurts when AZ isn’t taking advantage of this field position. at some point, you know Ryan and Turner are going to get going.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:15 PM
Kurt really wanted to throw an interception on that drive. Back to the basics for the ole turnover machine.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:21 PM
I am actually enjoying Hammond and Collinsworth calling this game. They actually sound like they are enjoying watching and commentating this game. Much unlike the next duo we’ll hear from.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:24 PM
@SM2535
Collinsworth is the best. He’s just happy to be watching a football game. You get the sense that he would say the same things whether he was watching the game in his livingroom or just as an average dude in the stands.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:28 PM
Ted –
I agree. Plus, he has great insight from having played the game for so long. Why is NBC keeping him holed up on a highlight show? He’s a dam good color guy.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Because their main color guy is John Madden. I dislike Madden’s commentary a ton, so you won’t get an argument from me that Collinsworth would deserve that spot, but he did the Thursday night games.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:31 PM
Hmm…
Just a hint of foreshadowing with the YAC discussion?
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 PM
That’s NFLN, not NBC. Sadly though, NBC won’t put Madden out to pasture any time soon. Madden should just sit back and let his royalties roll in from Electronic Arts.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:35 PM
Hahaha, they just called the Cardinals ownership a braintrust
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:36 PM
As they both looked upwards in a “Thank God” moment.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 PM
Worst drop ever
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 PM
Wow. Roddy Hwite dropped that. Bet that Roddy White would have caught it though.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 PM
jeez that was bad
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:39 PM
I think the no pain killers comments are a direct slap at alleged tough guy Brett Favre
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:42 PM
not feeling good about AZ despite the 14-3 lead. the defense is on the field wayyyyy too long. they’re going to get ripped up by Turner in the 4th qtr.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:44 PM
would NBC risk putting CC in the booth with Madden and Al? Or too cluttered?
AZ needs more pressure on Ryan. Ryan really has settled after that pick early.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:44 PM
I dunno TBL. They look like they have Turner in check pretty well. If Ryan finally settles in, he’s the one who’s going to hurt them.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 PM
Not so much too cluttered as much as CC would make Madden sound terrible.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:47 PM
arizona is fucked, im telling you. if AZ doesn’t score on this drive, ATL gets it first second half and a score means they’ll have the lead.
let’s face it – AZ got a great 42 yard TD catch, and then a freakish 70-yard TD. other than a few nice edge runs, AZ hasn’t had a great drive yet.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:49 PM
az facing 3rd and 10 and atl will get the ball back with PLENTY of time. ugh.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 PM
even better: INT. fucking taco. ok, back slowly away from the CPU
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 PM
Whoa boy. Can’t put that pick on Warner
/First time for everything
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 PM
I though white WR’s are suppose to be “sure handed”?
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 PM
No doubt. Kinda feels like a college game. A couple big plays (and turnovers) lead to scoring opportunities. No one is really putting a string of plays together and driving.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 PM
Honestly, I prefer the “Geico” commercials over those damn Snuggie commercials from earlier today during basketball.
/pointless
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:54 PM
So is Matt Millen the GM of Football Night in America now?
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:54 PM
Seriously…does anybody in this thread have Geico for their auto insurance?
/USAA
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:56 PM
turn your mic off Collinsworth…
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:56 PM
Atlanta is going to be GOOD next year.
/obvious
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:58 PM
nice catch Roddy HHwit
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:58 PM
Boy that looked too easy.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:58 PM
like i said: trouble.
17-14, get the ball first second half, and ATL hasn’t been stopped on its last three drives.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:59 PM
usaa here, Wildcat.
also, dont you guys switch to hoops during commercials?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:00 PM
NO!!!!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:01 PM
why run plays here? are they stupid? this is the playoffs, kurt
if there had been a turnover there …
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:02 PM
@TBL – Not really. I hate Vandy and screw the state of Washington.
Unless you’re talking about womans basketball…
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:06 PM
These UFC-less Saturdays are tough to get through.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:08 PM
does anyone else thing that Matt Millen gets an erection whenever he watches the Cards and their team of recievers?
/drunkish
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:09 PM
Cannot believe Millen showing his face on National Television….Good lord, do these man have ANY shame?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:10 PM
“So is Matt Millen the GM of Football Night in America now?”
By the end of the late game Bob Costas will be replaced by Geraldo Rivera.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:13 PM
No but was was funny shatner
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:13 PM
gus johnson is having fun with this Florida game
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:14 PM
There needs to be some sort of amber alert system, only for Gus Johnson and close games.. turn to CBS immediately.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:15 PM
Not in early January.
Not to go off-topic, but TBL, what do you think of Gonzaga’s recent swoon?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:16 PM
UW/WSU has priority for me right now.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:17 PM
F’ Florida. Uk is gonna roll them later this year.
INT TD Cards
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:17 PM
omg, that’s a prayer that was answered
thank you!
rolle TD
21-17
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:17 PM
While we’re on it, I was very pleasantly surprised with Gus and Steve Tasker when they called the Jets-Seattle game. Good duo.
Aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnd, we got ourselves a game again
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:19 PM
the cards have 3 fluky TDs. i cannot imagine a 4th. the one thing this doesn’t do – give the defense a breather. AZ needs a huge ball-control drive or the 4th qtr is going to mean like 100 yards for turner.
Gonzaga? it’ll be fine. heads probably swollen with the great run, and then just crestfallen when it had Conn beat in reg before that prayer triple went in. still F4 material, IMO.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:19 PM
Gus also does the Knicks games fairly well. He’s always into it, even if he was to watch, you know…the Knicks…
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:19 PM
cassino – UW student/alum?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:20 PM
has*
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:20 PM
What’s pretty funny, is that if you talk to broadcasters, many of them can’t stand Gus and the way he calls the games.
Yes it seems most fans love the guy.
He also did the Kimbo Slice debacles…but, to be honest, he needed to bone up on his MMA.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 PM
I’m with you 100%. I do think they may have been a little over-rated to start the season, but I think they’ll be just fine come March. They go as Pargo goes, though, and that scares me.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:22 PM
Yeah, recent alum. A lot on the line for this game – my brother went to WSU and they’ve won 7 straight.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:24 PM
Broadcasters like it when a guy is somewhat detached to the game, ala Joe Buck. If a guy can sound like he’s describing curtains, than he’s liked in the business. Meanwhile, fans love a guy with enthusiasm, which makes sense since the people at home watching the game are fans of the sport and/or the teams involved, and enjoy an announcer who cares.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:24 PM
yes, holding. push ‘em back.
the cards NEED a stop here and to get the ball back and work clock. mix edge and hightower. where’s hightower?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:25 PM
Guilty. What can I say, I like guys who sound like they enjoy and get into what they are watching.
Which is why is depresses me that for the rest of my life, when I hear the first Red Sox WS win in 86 years, it’s Joe F’ng Buck’s voice that I hear. I think some of these announcers take themselves (and the situation) way, way, too seriously.
Look, if it’s an exciting game, be excited for Christ’s sake. It’s OK to have emotion. When Fitz made that first TD catch, I literally out loud said, “WOW”. And then you can hear CC grinning and saying “This kid is sick.” That’s what I’m talking about. Get into it, already. You get paid to speak your opinion on what millions of people are watching along with you. You could have it a lot worse.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:25 PM
In Police Academy or Robot Chicken, your pick.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:26 PM
God, ATL is looking like they were when they opened the game. Completely discombobulated.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:26 PM
SM – agree on pargo. dont think he’s the ideal PG for that team, and obviously i’d much-rather see a pure, pass-first guy in there … have they tinkered with bouldin running the offense?
3rd and forever … nice stop, AZ. now run, run, run
oh yeah, that was totally a hold in the end zone
damn
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:27 PM
Bad no hold/safety call there. Dirty Birds dodged a big one.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:27 PM
Wow, the Falcons are falling apart. Badly.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:29 PM
Don’t think so, not yet at least. Good thing is, the season is early. They have two months to get it together. Also, how bad-ass is Pitt? Big East should be abbreviated BEast this year…they are a f’n beast. Not sure about nine making it, but there’ll be a lot of BEast teams come March.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 PM
cassino, shouldn’t UW be better? I don’t pay much attention to college bball until March. The pains of witnessing the first 0-18 record in Pac-10 history.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 PM
TBL, I don’t switch to NCAA hoops during NFL playoff games….well unless it’s Big 10 basketball and then I HAVE to change the channel.
BTW, did I mention I’m a sadomasochist?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 PM
Collinsworth just informed me that Berry would have gotten two points and a safety.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:32 PM
Good to see the officials are keeping up with the standards set during the regular season.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:32 PM
TBL, Bouldin doesn’t have the quickness to create anything. He would only be a facilitator and I would rather have Pargo’s explosiveness on the point.
/only watched three GU games this year
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:32 PM
destroyed in seconds marathon all day on discovery btw, if you need a flip to or an alternative to this commercial fest disguised as a sporting event
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:33 PM
im not one of these ‘referee’ guys … but you’ve got to be kidding me on that no call. the long FG was a terrible idea. would have gone for it. the AZ play calling has been TERRIBLE. edge breaks off five. so let’s pass twice!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:33 PM
Second to Planet Earth as coolest show to watch in HD.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:34 PM
TBL – kinda hard not to ignore how bad some of these no-calls have been. This is getting kinda silly.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:35 PM
Commercials never work for me…
/Must…kill…Lincoln…
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:35 PM
Question for Salma…built for comfort or built for speed?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:35 PM
cassino, are you the guy who was raving about the kid Amaning on UW this year? if so, thanks. i got him in fantasy, and he’s had a few nice games for me.
i really, really wish fans could call plays for AZ. the offensive coaches are fucking this one up royally. this is as lucky a 21-17 lead i’ve seen this season. it cannot continue
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:36 PM
Roddy White has disappeared in this game.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:37 PM
“i wonder who is the half-time show this year in the Super Bowl.”
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:37 PM
the mute button is your friend.
thought: why hasn’t AZ gone to any cover 2? all ryan is doing is picking apart the corners on quick outs. why not change it up for a play or two? does he have a completion over the middle?
GET THE BALL TO HIGHTOWER, TOO!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:39 PM
now that’s a nice play call on 3rd and short. two more runs, please.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:39 PM
I remember watching them when they -got run out of the gym by- played Kansas and thinking it might be a long season, but since then they’ve played pretty well. They’ve beaten all their cupcakes, including Portland St (beat Gonzaga) without Brockman, and have gotten better every time out.
They legitimately go 10 deep, I’m not sure if there’s a deeper team in the Pac-10. Kenpom has had them ranked in the 20-30 range all season and going 20-11 (11-7), if you’re into that sort of thing. That’s tournament bound so I guess we’ll see.
I feel you on the 0-18 front though. I just lived through the Ty Willingham era.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:40 PM
wow, cement shoes warner runs for the 1st!!!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:41 PM
It’s almost time for another Geico commercial and a reminder of the Super Bowl halftime show performer!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:42 PM
Did CC just drop “bounce-out-ability” on us?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:42 PM
TBL, please tell me you’re not going to root for the Dolphins tomorrow. You can’t call yourself a Jets fan if you put on the Teal Cap.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:43 PM
There’s Hightower
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:44 PM
this is the first legit AZ drive of the game. already chewed like 4-5 mins of the clock.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:45 PM
Urban! DIII baby!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:45 PM
GSG – I think i’ll bet on B’more, so no.
but i do like pennington. strong love-hate relationship with that guy.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:47 PM
that’s what im talking about!
28-17
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:48 PM
Pennington was great with the Jets fans, but once he put on that dumb jersey, he became dead to me. Anyone that dons the Teal or the Pats jersey is the enemy for life.

GSG – You guys ran him out of town. Not like he chose to leave…
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:49 PM
Oh thanks God, Springstein and the E-Street Band!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:50 PM
intercepted!!!!!!!!!!
go cards!!!!!!!!
terribly underthrown by ryan
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:50 PM
Fair enough.
UW has a STACKED recruiting class for 2009-2010. I’m semi-pumped cuz Craig Robinson has two top recruits already and lead on Terrance Boyd, a top 50 recruit out of San Diego.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:51 PM
Boy oh boy…Ryan has Peyton Manning feet right now. Not gonna win like that.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:51 PM
SM – I never said he chose to leave, but he put on an enemy jersey. Also, WE didn’t run him out (although the media in NY is awful), he didn’t fit our “coach”’s system. Same thing with Vilma.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:51 PM
i hate the pats more than the dolphins. but, the marino fake-spike play was the low point of my young sporting life as a fan. i really was crushed.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:53 PM
wasted pick. geez. that burned what, 1 minute off the clock? that pains me
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:55 PM
Falcons are still in this in spite of playing like shit for an entire quarter.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:57 PM
yup, and that’s what scares me. they re one big play – blocked punt, blocked FG, long TD pass … away from getting right back in it. and besides that one nice drive … AZ hasn’t shown that it can hold the ball for 5-6 minutes and get points.
but an az win will up my bet on SD from 50 to $75. so go cards!
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:58 PM
You think he liked the cheers he got injured and was trying to hobble off the field?
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:58 PM
GSG – I didn’t mean you, as in the fans, but you as in your team. Can you really blame the guy though? He was killed in NY and gets shoved out the door for Brett Favre. I think it’s human nature to want to get revenge on the team that turned its back on you.
Nothing like the Johnny Damon to the Yanks situation where he was a free-agent and willingly signed with “the enemy” sheerly for dollars.
TBL – why the Pats hate?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:01 PM
ok. you get a 15-yard penalty.
and then you come out and thrown a screen for negative yards?
the run is working! stick with it!
ugh!
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:02 PM
Uh oh. Warner is morphing into pissed-off Kurt Warner mode. Expect a fumble or INT next possession…
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:02 PM
SM – That’s true. I wish he would have gone to a team elsewhere, even the Bills.
Also, TBL, how does it make you feel to see Abraham in a Falcons jersey racking up sacks? If only he could’ve laid off the booze in NY.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:03 PM
fucking cards again stumble on 3rd down. the two play calls prior – a WR screen to the slow white guy with stone hands? – hurt, too.
born in NY. lived in NY for about 6-7 years, and i learned to dislike most things boston. namely, the celtics, pats, red sox.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:05 PM
abraham was one of my favorite jets when he was around. what a beast.
i told you guys i had lunch with vida guerra once, right?
http://www.bastardly.com/2009-vida-guerra-looked-hot-tyreses-30th-birthday-party-0102?page=0,1
some days, i REALLY miss that us weekly gig.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:06 PM
Ice, Ice, Baby….too cold, too cold.
Go ninja, go ninja, go! Let’s rev up this turtle machine!
/Eight Heinekens in, I’m sorry.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:06 PM
SAFETY!!!!! nice
30-17 and get the ball
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:06 PM
Safetyyyyyyyyyyyyy
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:07 PM
In the grasp huh… if only that could have been called in the Superbowl…
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:08 PM
Eli Manning is laughing sitting in his recliner right now.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:10 PM
Or if only Samuel hadn’t dropped the pick, if only Harrison could have pried the ball loose, if only Jacobs hadn’t fell forward. Don’t play that game, you’ll kill yourself. I played the “if only Nick Harper’s wife hadn’t stabbed him in the leg” game for a few months and it got me nowhere.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:10 PM
TBL – Is Vida a bitch? She looks like she would be one. Still couldn’t like her after finding out she had been with Shockey. Guff.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:10 PM
TBL – born and raised in SW CT (fairfield co.), but moved up here for school and lived here since. I have learned to love everything Boston
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:11 PM
Lol at the Nick Harper line. So true.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:13 PM
So do the Cards resign Edge now? I’m actually a bit afraid that Marvin Harrison is going to have a breakout game in the playoffs and kill my dream of the Colts signing T.J. Housh to line up alongside Wayne, Gonzo and Clark.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 PM
bsanders, so true. Also, I hope the Colts crush those classy Chargers… it’s going to feel so dirty rooting for Peyton tonight.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 PM
let’s just eat clock here and get a TD and everyone wins. well, not to anyone who bet the under (50)
oh damn. and it looks like james will be flagged there … dammit. dumb.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:15 PM
Yeah Robinson is definitely making moves. There’s just so little breathing room in the Pac-10 with UCLA, USC, Arizona and UW taking most of the top recruits. It’s tough, but the Bennetts managed at WSU, so anything is possible.
UW’s next incoming class is sick, and if they can land Demarcus Cousins, it’ll be one of the best in the nation. The best part of it is Abdul Gaddy (#6 overall according to Scout) would likely be a one and done, but he’s actually too young and has to go to college for at least 2 years.
Then there’s the local talent that they need to keep home, in 2010 it’s Josh Smith (#2 C), and in 2011 it’s Tony Wroten (#1 Overall, goes to Brandon Roy’s high school, is Nate Robinson’s cousin). The future’s looking pretty good for UW.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Forgot James still has one more year left on his deal. Be interesting to see what the Cards do. Tim Hightower is awful, though. No doubt about that.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:16 PM
I will at a bar. Drinking (more) heavily (than I already have been) to have to watch a game between Rivers and Manning and hope for one of them to win. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:19 PM
opposite, actually. repeatedly denied the shockey stuff (which is standard). incredibly friendly and polite. had lunch the week she was on the cover of playboy, and later that night, went to her little party at some club. took a buddy of mine to give him the intro and he was pretty much floored at her hotness. of course, there were like 95 huge jersey guy types around her all night, so hardly got to talk to her. ah, those were the days … now, i blog!
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:19 PM
When in doubt, choose the one who doesn’t bitch at the fans in the stands…or at the QB across the field.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:20 PM
Haha I’m with you SM. Can someone explain to me how Dungy gets a pass for his now annual “I might retire” story that Favre gets ripped for? His Quiet Strength isn’t very quiet.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:20 PM
ah, man. hearing that matt ryan story again is quite sad. geez, major bummer. i’ll be rooting for him next year (but not tonight)
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:23 PM
That’s good to know about Vida. Although not good to hear about he Jersey guys haha.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:24 PM
Sadly, I may have to. I strongly, strongly dislike the Colts. But, you have to respect them. Rivers (and the whole SD team for that matter) are a bunch of punks who talk a lot of shit, and I hope get their asses beat every week.
/Still not bitter that we won 3 more games than SD and they are hosting a fucking playoff game
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:24 PM
Since when does Favre get ripped for it? I mean, by non-bloggers. Believe me, Colts fans don’t really like it, but the guy usually only takes about a week or top, tops, to say whether or not he’s coming back. Not two or three months, like Favre-lingus. Of course, Dungy hates the gays, so as much as I like him as a football coach, he’ll never get my vote.
His victory in Super Bowl XI does make him king of the negroes, though.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:25 PM
fuck. now the cards will need at least 2-3 first downs to lock this up. the ONLY good news is that if ATL wins 31-30, then i get a push as i had AZ +1
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:25 PM
Damn, SeaTac is loaded this year and next. Agree that it is difficult with the Pac-10 big dogs you mentioned swallowing up the top recruits but, like you pointed out Dick and Tony Bennett are doing pretty well at WSU. And there are still plenty of depth in Cali (and often SeaTac, too). The tough part is Oregon talent runs very hot and cold. Hopefully, OSU can keep some of the recruits in-state in the future (Love, Singler, Moser, Harthun, Dunleavy…LONG list of talent running out of the state).
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:26 PM
I think only because he doesn’t make a big deal about it. Pretty sure Favre had a lot to do with how much his “retirement” was talked about. He’s pretty buddy-buddy with a lot of big NFL writers (looking at you, Peter King)
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:27 PM
huh?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:27 PM
Horrible clock management by the wonder rookie tandem coach/qb.
Hope it costs them the game.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:27 PM
he left out the L
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:28 PM
SM: Dungy has the media wrapped around his little finger, just like Favre. It’s true that at least his saga is over with by March, but it’s still getting to be a little annoying.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 PM
so nervous with that throw on first. can we PLEASE run the ball? please?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:29 PM
I’ve never heard anyone but Pats fans complain about it, to be honest. No offense, since I respect the hell out of the Pats and would take Belichick over Dungy anyday, but I think you’re overblowing how big of a story it is.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:30 PM
yes, breaston! nice throw, kurt!
milk that clock!
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:31 PM
Cracker –
Perhaps. But also, Dungy is a coach versus Favre being a player. HC’s are swapped out much more easily than QBs.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:32 PM
It’s really not a big story. And believe me, Belichick has the media up here beyond wrapped around his finger. It’s the national media that despises him.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:33 PM
the fuck are these guys thinking with a REVERSE???????????
RUN THE FUCKING BALL STRAIGHT UP THE FUCKING FIELD YOU ASSCLOWNS
geez
now they get the stop at the 2 min warning and ATL will def have a chance
fucking imbeciles
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:33 PM
bsanders – Don’t the Colts have a succession plan set up? If so, it wouldn’t even be like they are changing schemes if Dungy decided to leave. Hardly Favre-esque. The Packers didn’t know who would be taking snaps until June.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:34 PM
UNREAL! first down, wide open!!!!!
ballgame!!!!!!!
thank you, kurt
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:34 PM
That’s exactly what perplexes me about it. I dunno, I guess if he drags it out longer this year, maybe more people will start to take notice. Just seems like the guy can do no wrong.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:35 PM
that guy has 2 catches on the season!!!!!!! no wonder the Falcons LBs just let him walk right past them
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:35 PM
Guess you have to credit the Cards for winning this game, but let’s face it, neither of these mostly mediocre squads was winning more than just this one outing. Either the G-Men or Panthers are going to stomp a trench in their ass.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:35 PM
Boy did the Falcons gack that one up. Cards and Carolina next week?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:36 PM
Holy moly man. You read the local papers much? I think Mike Reiss is the only guy in the greater Boston area that doesn’t make a name for himself by bashing the Pats and Belichick any chance they get.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Yep, their QB coach/associate head coach has been announced as his successor. And he’s black so they won’t have to interview any other candidates, he can just slide on in. He’s basically a Dungy clone, right down to his QB roots. I’ve always thought it was crazy that Dungy’s o-coordinator his entire time with the Colts was Dungy’s o-coordinator when he was a QB at Minnesota. Odds had to be pretty small on that one.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Am I the only one who doesn’t like Bruce Springsteen?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:39 PM
I can’t stand Bruce Springsteen. He’s a worse marble mouth than Shannon Sharpe.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:39 PM
Was watching a Springsteen concert in Barcelona on TV the other day. I literally got goosebumps watching him belt out “Born in the USA.” It was pretty sick.
/more than a little douchey?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:40 PM
EEI (specifically the Big Show) seems to slurp him plenty. As an aside, not really sure why you’d try to make a name for yourself by bashing the Pats. They’re only the most successful franchise of the decade. Not too bright a move, if you ask me. Who exactly does everyone think would do a better job than Belichick?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:40 PM
“Then that pussy Kurt Cobain had to come along and ruin it all.”
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:40 PM
Playoff wins in the last 12 years:
Arizona Cardinals–2
Dallas Cowboys–0

January 3rd, 2009 at 7:41 PM
fan of the boss here
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:41 PM
Y’all have fun for the rest of the night. I need to get thoroughly cocked to root for either Rivers or Manning in the next game.
/going to be ugly
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:41 PM
great stat, Jay
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:43 PM
Good news is Football Night in America is sponsored by my drink of choice, Diet Pepsi.
/with a healthy splash of Captain Morgan
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:43 PM
Can we get another Star Trek reference, please? Or at least some more dick?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:49 PM
new post is up.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:49 PM
SM, have you never heard of Ron Borges?
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:56 PM
Ding ding ding!
