Can Georgetown Do it Again?
College Basketball January 3rd. 2009, 12:00pm
Six days after annihilating the No. 2 team in the country, the Hoyas of Georgetown attempt take on another top five opponent, Pittsburgh, in by far the best college hoops game of the day. Beating two unbeatens? In the same week? (The rigors of the Big East schedule continue Monday for Georgetown: it plays another Top 10 team, Notre Dame, on Monday.) Nobody’s quite sure what to make of Pitt. Wins over ranked opponents: Zero. Wins over teams that are in the discussion for the NCAA tournament: Zero. The Hoyas are a slight favorite, but a letdown wouldn’t shock us because, well, that’s the kind of thing that happens to a young team after a significant early-season win. Maybe Pitt overlooked Rutgers and was eyeing this game and that’s why it nearly lost on the road this week?
The only other game that could be interesting is Tennessee at Kansas, if you like sloppy, up-and-down action.

pitt starts like Gtown did against Conn: up 6-0 quickly

For some reason, KU is favored in the game. I don’t think folks have an idea how bad this team is right now. RPI is 90. Making the tourney is looking more and more like an issue.

i saw that, KC. definitely surprising. vegas must know something i dont.
i took Pitt +3.5

Yes. I get to meet JT3 when the Hoyas come to Tampa to rape USF.

Both teams can’t convert around the basket today.
Anyone interested in ND-St. John’s?
…anyone?

st. john’s hasn’t been must-watch TV since Erik Barkley left. remember when he dropped 40 on Duke in MSG?

Probably residual Allen Fieldhouse mystique. It is a great home court advantage no doubt, but this is going to be one of the worst KU teams in the past couple of decades. I haven’t followed Tenn at all, so maybe something is up with them.

Wake FOrest @ BYU tonight could be really good. BYU has the longest home winning streak in the country. Of course, it’s on The Mountain, so nobody will see it.

Erik Barkley sucks and they weren’t must watch TV back then either.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:40 PM
barkley could score, that’s for sure.
wake on the road … good call, NSR. wake only favored by 2.5.

Wasn’t Barkley’s suspension the one that led Mike Jarvis to compare the NCAA to the Gestapo?
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:47 PM
Barkley was a beast. The team that had Artest-Postell, however, was the best. I believe they made the Sweet 16 or Elite 8?

I loved Mike Jarvis. He could probably get his job back.

I would stay away from Wake Forest tonight. Flying across the country to play a good BYU team that got absolutely thumped by Wake last year. I’m sure there will be some revenge on their minds. Not to mention Wake is one of those undisciplined teams that could get clipped playing sloppy against a good fundamntal team.
Pitt is the best team in the big east. I don’t care what anyone says. Their defense is rough, they have a dominant big mand, a slasher and a pg that can take over if need be. Not to mention they’ve added a sharpshooter in Dixon and they have all the pieces. No other team in the conference has all those pieces.

KC- Pomeroy has them decently high still, and there’s no way this team is worse than the 99 team. Or maybe it was 00, whatever year Boschee was a Sophomore. They were awful.

By the way my friend told me a great story about last night’s Sugar Bowl. She was screaming for Utah and cheering loudly during the game and the Bama fans around her got pissed and called security. Security told her to stop cheering for Utah so she asked what she could say. The security guard told her to stop cheering for Utah or they’ll kick her out of the stadium because the Bama fans complained! Out of the stadium!
Gotta love Alabama fans.
She walked around the concourse found some Utah fans and ended up sitting in the Utah student section. Said it was an amazing experience to sit there when the game ended and hates Bama more than ever.

Ugh, the Boschee, Robertson and Gregory years. Those teams made the Tourney though. At least the Big 12 North appears to be down again. Playing CU, ISU, KSU, and Nebraska twice will help.

I completely forgot to factor in the “Saturday Afternoon Game at AFH.” KU does not lose those. Great start. Hopefully, they are over the second half collapse bug.

watched some of the first half – man, Kansas can look AWESOME and then five mins later TERRIBLE, as if they’ve never seen a zone before. great win for Pitt.
Hoyas were down 8 with like 12 mins left and i was at the gym so i came back 10 mins later and hoyas were down 20.

Wow. I was at this “home” game, in the “student section” and it sucked.
TBL – I still say the Hoyas are among the best teams in the country. There were a few problems here. With the students still on break, the stadium was relatively quiet. It blows that the biggest home game of the year had to happen during christmas break. The next problem, and the one that cost us the game was offensive rebounding. Pitt had more offensive rebounds than we had defensive rebounds it seemed and it sucked to watch it happen right in front of me.
It’s interesting because this has now happened 3 straight games. Most of us have come to the conclusion that Pitt is the absolute worst matchup in the country for us. They are the best rebounding team in the country with players who can really bang down low (Blair went for 20 and 17!!) and we struggle against players like that. Pitt is followed closely by syracuse and Onuaku.
We just have to pray that Pitt is on the opposite side of the bracket and gets upset for us to have a chance.
