Darren Sproles is the Man: SD 23, Indy 17, OT
NFL January 3rd. 2009, 11:39pm
Would it be too much to ask for a massive feature on Darren Sproles in USA Today on Monday? We want to know everything about the guy. He grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. How did a tiny man from Waterloo become such a stud? Thank you, Mr. Sproles.

The Chargers really aren’t very talented, and Norv sucks.

OSU held him to 38 yards rushing.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:43 PM
no reverse jinx comments tomorrow. promise.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:43 PM
TBL way to stand by these guys all season. Even though they sucked cock. I guess the regular season means shit. Bsanders…suck it.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:44 PM
Darren Sproles love? He’s a KSU guy. I’m a Ku guy. He won me a ton of money in Arrowhead a few years back playing against the supposed greatest college team ever. They should build statues in Aggieville in his honor.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:45 PM
Another reason to hate OSU fans. No one cares.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:45 PM
And about the overtime format, which everyone will be talking about now. It’s absolutely criminal that both teams aren’t guaranteed possession, considering football is about offense, defense and special teams. All teams should have to showcase all three in an overtime period.
I’ve said it for years, all you have to do is allow teams to play normal football, until one team stops another team as long as both teams have possessions. Meaning: Team A scores, then team b does not match that score..game over. Or Team A fails to score, Team b scores, gamve over
Sure, team a still at a disadvantage b/c they don’t know what they need, but still more equitable and more football-like than the current format
Isn’t that common sense?
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:46 PM
you’ll forgive us if we don’t believe you, TBL
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:48 PM
Don’t you mean “Thank you, officiating crew?”
You can’t throw some of those flags in OT. Worst year for NFL officials in as long as I can remember.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:49 PM
35 – 7 KSU over Ou in ‘03 Big 12 champ game. KSU was 14 point underdogs. I had KSU outright. The only game I will ever brag about for gambling purposes. I never thought he’d be in the league this long. Great game for him tonight.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:49 PM
ill – but they showed the replays – one was def a facemask. there isn’t even a debate about it. what can be argued was that the guy who facemasked sproles, was facemasked, himself
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:49 PM
Indy had their chances in OT to get the ball back and score.
They couldn’t get it done. The OT rules are not the problem, their defense was.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:49 PM
I think you do have to throw both those flags.. dude held onto his facemask as long as I’ve ever seen, and the holding was further than 5 yards and pretty much took the wr out of his route.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:51 PM
Yeah but how do you know the Chargers defense would have held. So had the coin flip have gone the other day, we might have a different team moving on. That’s not football.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:51 PM
Now Manning can write a hand written letter to Darren Sproles.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:51 PM
good call, KU. i remember sproles having that monster game.
the mere fact that he’s in the league at his size, and contributing so significantly, is impressive.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:52 PM
TBL- I agree with the face mask. I don’t think you can call a defensive holding call on 3rd down when Rivers throws up an off balance pass to no one.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:54 PM
Chargers were the better team today. Colts third-down defense is horrid, as it has been all year. Colts had the chance to pounce early and put the game away (just like last year’s playoff game) and didn’t. Nice to see that just when the Colts got past one team they couldn’t beat in the playoffs another has cropped up to fill their place. I’ll be steering clear of this place for a few weeks so you guys can all get your “no team has overcome more than the Colts” blah blah blah jokes out of your system.
Oh and Tampa – Super Bowl XLI. Remember it, live it, love it.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:54 PM
It was holding before the pass was thrown. If he didn’t hold him then the pass wouldn’t need to be a jump ball
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:54 PM
im not saying the OT rules are the reason for a specific win or loss … im just saying i think the college system is more fair.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 PM
agree. colts really had SD reeling early, and they had this game. hey, at least you were in the playoffs.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 PM
It was holding before the pass was thrown. If he didn’t hold him then the pass wouldn’t need to be a jump ball
Really? I’m pretty sure he didn’t even look where he was throwing that ball. The league makes it almost impossible to defend the pass. If you can’t make contact with the WR when he runs into you then how are DBs expected to play tight DEF?
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 PM
WOw Sproles is retarded
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 PM
Making a stop and forcing a punt is football. Indy failed, lost, and goes home.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:00 AM
well, i just did something real stupid: after going 2-0 today, i decided to up my bet and take the vikings tomorrow. think i’ll take a flyer on the ravens, but i like them at 3, not 3.5
January 4th, 2009 at 12:00 AM
I’ll say it again. Where was this OT outrage last year when the Giants intercepted Favre and won the game?
Oh yeah, conveniently forgotten.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:01 AM
So how about those away team favorites?
January 4th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
Although I would be in favor of playing out another full quarter.
I just think the college system is so contrived and ridiculous. Placing the ball at your opponent’s 25 yard line after a score is certainly not football.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
hey, what about that bill simmons ‘Home field doesn’t mean shit’ business?
home teams this today: 2-0. maybe the road teams will have better luck tomorrow.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:03 AM
beat me to it, oconnodv
January 4th, 2009 at 12:04 AM
well, i just did something real stupid: after going 2-0 today
Well played, TBL. I thought the Cards limped too badly into the playoffs and took a rookie QB on the road. I’m retarded.
I don’t like either of tomorrow’s lines.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:05 AM
I’m not sure if there is “outrage” r27, I think there is a wanting of a better OT format in general.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:05 AM
The college system is contrived, that’s why I say, play normal football until both teams have had equal possessions and one team has the lead. It’s common sense.
Right, so both teams should have the opportunity to make that same stop that you’re referencing. Football is about how your defense matches up with the other team’s offense, compared with your offense matchup up with the other team’s defense.
If overtime is fair, then you should have offenses or defenses and play the entire game that way. Wait, that doesn’t sound like much fun, the league would have to have an even numbe rof all-time offense teams and an even number of all-time defensive teams. And what about the teams that really embrace special teams. That’s a whole nother can of worms!!
January 4th, 2009 at 12:07 AM
The emphasis in all of the analysis of this game will be on how Manning and the Colts lost; not on the Chargers. It’s the nature of the beast, just as it is when Tiger doesn’t win a tournament.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:07 AM
never seen jumper, but it’s on HBO. only watching because Bilson is in it. not a huge fan of the movie so far, but i’ll watch just about anything bilson is in.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:09 AM
i will say this about manning: he could wind up as the greatest QB in nfl history … and only have one ring. strange.
i dont think this loss can be pinned on him at all.
and really, let’s not beat this official thing to death. al michaels already tried to.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:10 AM
Umm, both teams had possession of the ball in that game. Granted, NY’s possession was only the amount of time it took to run in the int, but still, that’s considered possession. In college, if a team going defense first has a pick 6, they don’t have to trot out their offense to try again, because the game is over.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:11 AM
I like the premise of Jumper, if I had to pick a super hero type characteristic teleporting would be the #1 on the list
January 4th, 2009 at 12:11 AM
This is what I hate about overtime talk. There is no perfect way to reflect a full game in extra time. It’s like when people get pissed that soccer games end in penalty kicks. Like there’s a better way to determine the better team after more than enough time to determine so.
After regulated time, if its still a crapshoot, it might as well be so.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:14 AM
It’ll never happen. Based on talent and individual performance, he certainly is. But unless he wins two more rings he’ll never be considered on the same level as Montana or Brady. It’s just the way people judge QB’s. And sadly, with the way the Colts are built, it’s just going to get harder for him to win a ring.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:14 AM
Yeah thats the point. The Giants got a stop. They didn’t let the PAckers go down the field and score. Defense is part of the game. I didn’t see anybody last year saying that OT wasn’t fair because the Packers won the toss.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:21 AM
Yes RS, defense is part of the game..so when do we get to see if San Diego’s defense could have made a stop? Stupid format, plain and simple.
OConn Correct, there’s no way for overtime to be perfect, but my solution kicks all the other solutions collective asses.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:21 AM
i think the comments are fucked up
January 4th, 2009 at 12:24 AM
why is that?
January 4th, 2009 at 12:25 AM
Montana > Brady. Manning is another Marino. Being a quarterback is about winning football games, not about putting up stats. Bill Walsh was one of the classiest coaches of all time. Belichek is the shittiest of douchebags. Brady will always be poopstained by Belichek. Plus, when the game is on the line, I would still take Montana.

It keeps saying i’ve already “said that” even though what I “said” hasn’t appeared yet in the comments
January 4th, 2009 at 12:29 AM
except it lets me write other things making me look like an idiot
January 4th, 2009 at 12:29 AM
//threadjack
did anyone see how the spurs won tonight? they have to have at least 4 or five buzzer beaters already, right?
//end threadjack…. if anyone is till here

Not nearly enough Diane Lane in “Jumper”…
January 4th, 2009 at 12:40 AM
Diane Lane filmed Untraceable in front of my former condo
January 4th, 2009 at 12:42 AM
Jumper would’ve been really awesome if they hadn’t bungled casting the main lead. However, it certainly was a decent action flick and the premise was solid. I do think a sequel is being planned also.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:25 AM
Didn’t read all the comments…
I saw Manning throw four (maybe even five) balls that easily (and I mean ball in between your two hands) should have been intercepted. There’s no way that game should have made it to OT.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:27 AM
Remember when Bill Polian bitched and bitched and bitched to the league about his wideouts getting manhandled with no penalties called? Remember subsequently how defensive backs get called for a bunch more ticky tack bullshit? Remember the definition of irony?
January 4th, 2009 at 10:21 AM
i will say this about manning: he could wind up as the greatest QB in nfl history … and only have one ring.
Brett Favre?
/ESPN
If you’re going to have an overtime the way the NFL does it, I think the team that has the ball at the end of regulation should get a chance to keep it.
Sorry, Colts, you had your chance. You had 25 seconds to score. Now the Chargers get the ball back because they won a coin toss.
January 4th, 2009 at 10:23 AM
Its not a coincidence, as Al Michaels said, that the officiating crew last night has thrown the most flags in the league.
