Any Colts Fans Have Their Dreams Interrupted Last Night by Visions of Darren Sproles?
NFL January 4th. 2009, 12:00pm
First place we went this morning: Indianapolis Star. Taken aback by this Kravitz column: The Colts are underachievers. Huh?
Another glorious chance to advance to a Super Bowl, their second in three years, with the New England Patriots out of the way and the AFC unfettered by the existence of a dominant team . . . and nothing.
Were Colts fans really thinking Super Bowl because of a lengthy winning streak and Manning’s MVP? Sorry, but that’s laughable. Expecting a dome team to go on the road for three games in a row without a running game or a sturdy defense (24th against the rush) is hilarious. Those expectations are unreasonable, even for one of the best QBs in the history of the NFL, Peyton Manning. How many fourth quarter comeback victories did Indy need? How many wins during that streak were compiled against inferior teams? This, however …
If (when) Tony Dungy decides to retire sometime next week, will there be a great hue and cry for him to come back and give it another shot? As much as this town loves and reveres him and appreciates him for everything he’s done on and off the field, isn’t it time for a new face, a new voice, something different?
… will be interesting. What if the Bucs decide to part with Gruden (or he walks), thus opening the door for Dungy to go to the town that most likely would be his next stop? How could Tampa not pursue a guy who has now been to the playoffs 10 times in a row, an NFL record? And if you say, “but he only has one title” then maybe you’re still drunk for New Year’s Eve.
We probably should say a nice word about Mike Scifres, SD’s punter with a penchant for pinning opponents deep. On four occasions, he boomed kicks that left Indy inside its own 20; twice inside their own 10-yard line, including the clutch one late in the fourth quarter. After Darren Sproles – anyone else considering getting a Sproles jersey? – Scifres was the Chargers hero.
(If we had to give a 3rd place MVP finish to someone, it would be the linebacker/safety who jammed Dallas Clark on that 3rd down late in the fourth quarter. The unidentified player jammed Clark enough so that Manning couldn’t hit his WR on that slant – because Clark was in the way – and Manning had to eat a sack. Actually, now that we think about it, did Clark run the right pattern? Shouldn’t he have done inside instead of straight upfield?) Oh, right, how about those Cards?
Great call on the game-winning TD by Al Michaels: “Here’s Sproles … Sproles inside the 10 (voices rises) … inside the 5 (voice really rising; nearly cracking) … and the Chargers win the game!”

So who owns the Colts more now … SD or NE?
TBL, I’m assuming you’re on MIN and MIA today?

Sproles didn’t grow up in Waterloo. He was born there, but went to grade school, middle school, and high school in a KC suburb.
He’s a KC boy, no doubt about it.

Just wanted to point out that the scene where Ferris dances in the singing “Twist and Shout” is great, great stuff.
Darren Sproles is a hero to any undersized wanna-be athlete (which includes myself).
And i can’t express how good of a job Madden and Michaels did saying NOTHING on the video above from the 15 second mark to the 117 mark. awesome work.
who missed the tackle at the 5? was it Bob Sanders?

If one were to really look at this Colts roster they’d see they’re a bunch of average to below average parts with a few extraordinary ones (Manning, Clark, Freeney, Mathis) who make enough big plays for them to win more games than they should. They won 12 games this year, but they weren’t the same team. The two guys they missed most this season were Jake Scott (who went to the Titans) and Ryan Lilja (who never played a down). Mauling run blockers who could pick up those third and ones, third and twos – plays you have to make to win in the playoffs. The Colts have a lot of holes to fill that Manning, Freeney and Mathis helped cover up this season.
I hope this isn’t the of their run as an elite team, but it may be. Too bad they only have the won Super Bowl win, but hey, when you play in the same conference as the greatest coach in NFL history and one of the all-time great QB’s, shit happens.

Mike:
Baltimore -3.5
Minnesota +3
If Baltimore somehow hits, I will double my Minnesota bet. What are your plans?

SD’s won 4 out of 6 against Indy. NE’s lost 4 out of 5.

Antoine Bethea. Was a pro bowler last season but regressed quite a bit this season.

i’d put Wayne in the ‘extraordinary group’ and i think Addai, when healthy, is very, very good. But what you said here is why I didn’t expect much from the Colts this season. PLUS the rough first 8 games, plus the Harrison situation (gun and age), plus the Saturday injury early, plus the Manning injury.
I feel like in August, we’ll see a lot of people doubt Indy. I jumped the gun a year early (trying to be cool and look prescient). Guess what? I’m already thinking – without seeing the schedule – that they’ll be BETTER next year. They’ll take the division. Collins/Young will be an issue for the Titans. This isn’t the end of the Indy run, IMO. Line will be better, Addai will be fully healthy, Gonzalez will be the firm No. 2 (forget getting TJ – they need defense), and you have to figure they get a DT in FA/draft and maybe a LB, too.
Oh, but all of that is out the window if Dungy leaves. no clue what’ll happen then.

Manning had to eat a sack

Fantastic game. Colts offense just kept stalling. Rivers wasn’t great but came up with enough plays to win, something Manning just doesn’t do enough of in the postseason. He had chances to salt this game away in the 4th and blew it.

I kind of like Philly today.
Also, opponents for ‘09 have been announced, just not the schedule.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:19 PM
if the colts could run the ball they would have won.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:20 PM
bs – Couldn’t really tell on the replay. thanks. maybe it’s just me, but i think Bob Sanders is overrated. nice talent, but he’s not all-world. he’s nowhere near the Ronnie Lott. I think Ed Reed is ahead of Sanders, and Troy P of Pitt, too. I really like Steve Atwater, so maybe I’m biased … but i think Atwater is better than Sanders, too.
I know the media loves Sanders, and he has a ring, and nice stats … just not completely sold on him as one of the best ever (well, over the modern era – like 80s to now). i’d put Sanders in the same group as Brian Dawkins.
Then again, i’m the same guy who thinks/thought Champ Bailey was a bit overrated, too.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:24 PM
good link, mike. may use that tomorrow. thanks.
obviously when you play teams matters a ton … but the colts have 5 non-division teams coming to their dome … and NONE of them made the playoffs. they do have 3 non-division road games against playoff teams, but you make the call as how good they are: Miami, Baltimore, ARizona. two are warm-weather.
on the surface, it looks like another 11-12 win season for Indy. a lot depends on if Jax rebounds. tenn will come back to earth a bit next year.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:24 PM
Bob Sanders can be considered overrated, but it depends on how you look at it. Did he singlehandedly turn the Colts defense around in ‘06? Of course not. It was an easy story and ESPN lapped it up. Is Sanders every bit as good as Ed Reed and Polamalu? Without question. But he only plays an uninterrupted regular season every other year, so you’d have to put those two ahead of him with regard to durability.

Jesus.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:29 PM
If we’ve learned anything it’s that the window never closes in the NFL as long as you have a great QB. Which is why Bal and Atl should be good for a long while. As long as Peyton is still an elite QB they will contend.

I liked Atlanta and Indy yesterday and Baltimore and Philly today. That means everyone should bet the house on Miami and Minnesota.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:51 PM
billick, i rely upon you guys for stuff like that.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:53 PM
Can’t wait for the Chargers = frauds post next Monday when they get trucked by the Steelers again. (Why, yes, I do like Baltimore today.)

There’s no way I’m leaving the TV today. UK-Cards, Ravens-Dolphins, Philly-Vikings, UCLA-Oregon, Michigan-Illinois, USC-Oregon State, UNC-Boston College
January 4th, 2009 at 1:01 PM
Dungy isn’t coming back to Tampa. You’ve got to be kidding me with that.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:04 PM
NFC East schedule is rough: NFC South + AFC West (if you think Denver will get better, SD will still be good, and Oakland will be a sleeper) + same standing NFC North team + same standing NFC West team.
NYG have both the NFC North/West division winners, so maybe it’s not random; Giants play just two teams that (Oakland and KC) were under .500 this year, and have seven games against playoff teams.

If there’s one person I don’t diss in football, it’s Tim Tebow:

Looks like Pats are gonna tag Cassel.

That’s a monster cap hit. Wow.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:18 PM
They couldn’t have been dreaming, they were up all night drafting letters to the League Office to get the rules for defensive backs changed back to what they were before Polian bitched. That shit takes time man.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:25 PM
Um, yikes. Pats have BUF and JAX as the only two teams with losing records that they play.
And we’re at Indy again?? That’ll be three years in a row. WTF?
January 4th, 2009 at 2:02 PM
without looking at the schedule, I’ll say the Saints will be somewhere between 9-7 and 7-9.
/every f-ing year’d

Way to keep that helmet on after the game, Peyton.
Way to stay classy no. 55 (about the 1:05 mark) … you jackass.
January 4th, 2009 at 4:54 PM
1) They aren’t a dome team anymore. They play in Lucas Oil Stadium now.
2) They won at Pittsburgh in week 10.
3) Kravitz is right about the underachieving part. Not about the Dungy part.
January 4th, 2009 at 4:56 PM
If you think Dungy would go back to Tampa to coach the Bucs, then you don’t know Tony Dungy very well. There is a lot he wants to do with his life beyond the game of football.
