T Sizzle vs. Joey Porter. Bring Your Popcorn
NFL January 4th. 2009, 1:00pm
Two grown men who like to yap and wear the No. 55 and have made a nice career out of creating havoc for opposing QBs will attempt to entertain NFL fans shortly. Miami’s Joey Porter (17.5 sacks) goes up against Baltimore’s Terrell Suggs (8 sacks, two defensive TDs). Hall of Fame lock Derrick Brooks may be the best ever to wear the No. 55, but perhaps Porter or Suggs will have a comparable resumes five years from now.
Questions: Will Chad Pennington be able to take advantage of the injury-ravaged Ravens secondary? What are the chances that Ray Lewis can contain the “Wildcat” again (Ronnie Brown: 27 yards in the first meeting)? What is a Davone Bess? We took the Ravens, but didn’t account for the “beating the same team twice is difficult” theory. Oh, and also, there’s this: 13 newspaper guys from Baltimore and Miami picked this game. Eleven chose the Ravens.

why not? I’m picking the Dolphins.
There. Now they’ll lose.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Fumble! recover by Porter!
January 4th, 2009 at 1:08 PM
well, so much for a nice start
January 4th, 2009 at 1:08 PM
porter’s also 5 years older than suggs… suggs is the superior player IMO then, and now.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:12 PM
nice stand there ravens
January 4th, 2009 at 1:13 PM
Go for it you cowards
January 4th, 2009 at 1:15 PM
should have gone for it.. these coach’s are so scared of 4th and 1.. you don’t win playoff games kicking field goals
January 4th, 2009 at 1:15 PM
I’m a BMer
/6 year old’d
January 4th, 2009 at 1:17 PM
Points will be at a premium in this one, take the points.
FGs can be gold.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:18 PM
Yep gotta go for it. a team’s not going 99 for a touchdown there.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:19 PM
If the Dolphins lose to an offense run by a guy who drafted a kick returner in the first round, I’m going to cry.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:20 PM
i’ll take that penalty. is that eddie muscles as our ref today?
January 4th, 2009 at 1:21 PM
no way guys, you take the 3 points in the first quarter. it’s not like they’re playing the 1989 49ers … come on, this is baltimore, with a rookie QB.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:23 PM
Nice play by Heap
January 4th, 2009 at 1:24 PM
man, Flacco looks sharp. that o-line is dominating.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:25 PM
exactly man.. so if you go for it and miss (highly unlikely, b/c you needed about a foot and a half) baltimore with that rookie qb has to go 99 yds.. not happening..go for it, take the odds that you get the 7, if you miss, odds are your gonna get a safety and get it right back
January 4th, 2009 at 1:26 PM
I agree with cortes about the field goals. Field position is huge, as well. If you pin them deep then you have a good shot at a short field which at the very least can get you the 3 pts back, but gives you a good shot at the 7 even if you get stopped.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:26 PM
great coverage
January 4th, 2009 at 1:26 PM
darn. no catch there. wouldn’t have mattered, anyway. i’ll gladly take the FG. 2 drives in and the ravens look good. moving the ball easily.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:28 PM
good point about the field position, cortes.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:29 PM
Alex Legion and Brock are the only things keeping Illini in this game.
/Angry UK fan
January 4th, 2009 at 1:32 PM
The odds are you get a safety?
What odds? Like 40:1?
January 4th, 2009 at 1:33 PM
nothing on the wildcat. thanks for coming out.
ok flacco, let’s move that football …
January 4th, 2009 at 1:33 PM
Can’t wait until Rex Ryan becomes the next jet head coach.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:34 PM
i was switching to roadhouse (AE) during commercials, but just remember the illinois michigan game.thanks for that, GSG
January 4th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
Is the Michigan Illini game on Big Ten Network?
January 4th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
Odds of a safety are low, but if you’re starting from the 2 yard line, in terms of odds what are the most likely things?
Drive like 20 yards and punt is a good outcome, don’t go anywhere and punt seems to happen a lot. Driving 98 yards for a TD probably happens more than a safety, but if you’re worrying about teams going 98 yards on you, you have bigger issues in a playoff game.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:37 PM
yea, cgb
January 4th, 2009 at 1:44 PM
smart move by Miami to blitz the shit out of flacco instead of letting him pick them apart
January 4th, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Michigan is pulling away.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:46 PM
yeah, michigan game on BT Network
That 3rd down and 10 laser from Flacco was impressive. the force that was nearly picked was not. he’ll need a bit more time, O-line. start dialing up some screen passes to Willis
January 4th, 2009 at 1:47 PM
Juuuuuuuuuuuuuust missed a nice pindown.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:51 PM
fucking Illinois keeps getting “Over the Back” fouls. They’re getting destroyed by Gibson, a guy that averages 4 points per game.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:51 PM
that blonde in roadhouse, the one who is with the old guy, is hot
January 4th, 2009 at 1:53 PM
Pennington picked off! Wooot
January 4th, 2009 at 1:57 PM
well, that was a terrible series after a pick. i’d actually go for it here, but that’s just me. maybe pinning them deep is the answer
January 4th, 2009 at 1:57 PM
that blonde who is always pictured next to the old guy, is hot
/made accurate’d
January 4th, 2009 at 2:03 PM
Mariotti is going to Fanhouse
January 4th, 2009 at 2:07 PM
ed mother fuckin reed!!!!!!!!!
TD!!!!!!!
January 4th, 2009 at 2:08 PM
Ed Reed is NASTY
that was awesome. ballhawk. he might end his career being the best safety in NFL history. man he’s nice
January 4th, 2009 at 2:10 PM
Reed joins Sproles in my list for favorite 10 players in the NFL. this from his wiki:
cool.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:12 PM
t sizzle! use timeouts here if necessary. try to get more points
January 4th, 2009 at 2:12 PM
Pennington is getting molested in this game.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:13 PM
Reed is definitely the best safety since he’s come into the league. The Dolphins just look deflated.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:15 PM
the Ravens D can be like a shark that smells blood in the water. pennington got DECKED by scott on that first pick, and then to throw another and have it run all the way back must have Miami freaking out.
panic = aggressive ravens
January 4th, 2009 at 2:16 PM
Yeah, the Ravens are at their most entertaining when the other team panics and they are all over the ball trying to get to the end zone on D and what not. Their second most entertaining is when they are losing close games and freaking out about penalty calls.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:16 PM
ravens had 2 lineman against 5, and then lewis blitzed and wasn’t touched? that’s terrible, miami
January 4th, 2009 at 2:17 PM
lol so true
miami gets ball first in the second half, right? balt could use 3 here …
January 4th, 2009 at 2:19 PM
are you kidding me? what a pass by flacco! that was incredible!!
January 4th, 2009 at 2:19 PM
If the Ravens get a TD here this game is over.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:20 PM
spectacular catch, too
January 4th, 2009 at 2:21 PM
That’s why you get picked in the 1st rd out of Delaware. What a gun
January 4th, 2009 at 2:22 PM
Ravens 48-0 when getting 2 or more turnovers.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:24 PM
is that all time Billick?
January 4th, 2009 at 2:25 PM
Yes, all time
January 4th, 2009 at 2:25 PM
whew, barely made that. 13-3 at the break? will take it. get the running game started in the 3rd quarter and wear these bitches out.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:26 PM
seriously? 48-0?
January 4th, 2009 at 2:27 PM
Killer advice there, Madden.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:28 PM
According to Bal’s play by play guy during his SportCenter interview this morning.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Either you misheard what he said or he was wrong. I am 100% positive that the Steelers turned the ball over at least twice in the 13-9 win this season.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:32 PM
And Kerry Collins threw two or three picks when the Titans beat them this year
January 4th, 2009 at 2:33 PM
It is turnover ratio not getting turnovers and it is since 2000, according to a quick google search.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:34 PM
That has to be wrong since the Ravens got two turnovers against the Steelers and lost this year.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:36 PM
Yep misheard him. 2 Turnover advantage= 48-0.
Hangs head in shame.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:36 PM
48-0 when +2 on turnover ratio is much less astonishing, but still good i guess
January 4th, 2009 at 2:38 PM
I think the Steelers turned it over twice.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:39 PM
I would’ve thought they would have had a lot more than 48 games in 11 seasons where they had two or more turnovers, so that makes sense.
Still impressive to have that goose egg.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:39 PM
And for once this year we have had trouble protecting leads against good teams. 13-3 in Pitt,10-3 vs Tenn,9-3 vs Pit at home all blown.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:40 PM
Kevin Duckworth died.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:42 PM
No the astonishing stat is 5 playoff appearances this decade with until this year, lousy offense. The best defensive player since LT should have more then 1 Super Bowl title.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:42 PM
Snape kills Dumbledore
January 4th, 2009 at 2:42 PM
ok, so not +2 yet.
would love a stop and score here. wow. brown drilled on 1st down.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:42 PM
i blame elvis grbac
January 4th, 2009 at 2:43 PM
peyton and ray lewis each only have one title. both are frauds!!
lol
so if the ravens win, who plays whom next weekend? (too lazy to search)
January 4th, 2009 at 2:44 PM
there’s a THIRD pick by Chad. uh-oh.
bad idea, bad pass.
let’s go ravens, need a TD here.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:44 PM
What is the deal with half of the seats being empty?
January 4th, 2009 at 2:44 PM
Wow Nance sounds like he’s about to cry after every Pennington interception.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:44 PM
Here’s a stat to upset Broncos fans:
Last 3 years with T Pryce:25-10 Without him:3-10
January 4th, 2009 at 2:45 PM
he should have lateraled that to ed reed
January 4th, 2009 at 2:45 PM
ravens play titans, chargers play pitt
January 4th, 2009 at 2:46 PM
This shit is over, put in Henne or Beck or whoever else they liked more than Brady Quinn
January 4th, 2009 at 2:46 PM
uh, south beach, 80 degrees? listen to the game on the radio while on the beach seems like a better option
January 4th, 2009 at 2:46 PM
dammit. go for it here, baltimore
January 4th, 2009 at 2:47 PM
No, they just have horrid home support. It’s a shit stadium that is a pain in the ass to get to and that organization has been so poorly run this decade that it is going to take more than one season to win any support back.
They honestly would be better off moving.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:47 PM
January 4th, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Miami is a terrible sports town in general, noone gets support even when they’re good, which is rare.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:52 PM
Still though, how did they end up “selling out” and avoiding the blackout? Did the team just buy up the remaining tickets?
January 4th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
man, ravens-titans will be fun. i think a lot of folks will be betting on baltimore. collins vs. this defense?
nice coffin corner there.
miami cannot hold onto the football
January 4th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
must have, Vikings struggled to sell all their tickets too, will be interesting to see if they have empty seats as well.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:54 PM
Question: Don’t they pick the playoff crews based on their regular-season performances?
/wondering how Ed Hochuli is doing a playoff game
January 4th, 2009 at 2:55 PM
he must have beat goodell in a arm wrestling match to get his crew into the post season
January 4th, 2009 at 2:56 PM
or whoever else they liked more than Brady Quinn
Ted Ginn?
/you’re gonna love his punt returns
January 4th, 2009 at 2:56 PM
it is also a transient city. and a small one. and how much of the population is hispanic/cuban?
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0763098.html
has a small population than Oakland. way smaller than jax
January 4th, 2009 at 2:56 PM
and thats the game
January 4th, 2009 at 2:58 PM
they explained the refs earlier – Ed’s team “graded out” the highest in the league this season.
TD ravens, that makes it 20-3 and now pennington has to start forcing shit to get them back in the game. here’s hoping the Baltimore D doesn’t let up and allow some weak TDs to screw my cover.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:58 PM
The Dolphins haven’t been the same since Reggie Roby left.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Reggie Roby and his one-bar helmet. huge fan of that.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:03 PM
His non-kicking leg never left the ground when he punted. Legend.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:03 PM
Thanks TBL. I was watching the first half in a restaurant with the volume down.
Ten bucks says a certain network starts a “Is Bill Parcells returning to Dallas?” rumor tomorrow. Or the Jets.
In other news, add Joe Flacco to the list of quarterbacks not named Tony Romo who have won playoff games.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:06 PM
Suggs is insane.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:07 PM
great. here comes Chad’s rally. a TD and a stop and another TD and we’ve got a game. really need to hold miami to a FG here.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:08 PM
ed reed to the rescue!!!!!!
anther pick!
poor chad. that’s four.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:08 PM
Jarrett Lee thinks Chad Pennington sucks
January 4th, 2009 at 3:09 PM
I fucking love Ed Reed.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:11 PM
Reggie Roby is dead you know.
You have to pull Pennington, the game is over NOW, and you just have to do something.
It’s like watching vintage Favre out there.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:11 PM
Seriously… how is Ed Reed that good?
January 4th, 2009 at 3:11 PM
Chad doing his best Favre impression, some Jets fans feel vindicated today
January 4th, 2009 at 3:13 PM
fuck JJ Redick. that is all
January 4th, 2009 at 3:15 PM
Pennington doing poorly in a playoff game, while the guy they dropped him for cost them the playoffs and their head coach, yeah I’m sure they’re just smiling their asses off.
TBL how do you feel as a Cowboys fan?
January 4th, 2009 at 3:15 PM
There were reports that they expected 10,000 Bal fans down there but flights were $500 and you had to go to Orlando. As for Tenn, Collins got revenge on us earlier this year but that was also one of Flacco’s worst games.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:16 PM
I definitely heard some ‘HEAAAAPPP’ chants after he made that thirty yard grab in the first. It’s not quite Steelers fans at a Redskins game bad, but there are a bunch of Ravens fans there.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:17 PM
Mort is reporting the Pats are franchising Cassell, meaning hes going to get 14 mill to back up Brady if hes healthy next year. Best. Gig. Ever.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:17 PM
pennington didn’t cost the jets a playoff game. the jags loss did. they were showing the score in the stadium, right? it was over at the half.
nice jarrett lee line
January 4th, 2009 at 3:18 PM
wow. that bess kid has some nice moves. totally blew past reed at the 20.
miami D just needs a stop after this TD and it’s a game.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:19 PM
sponge, they won’t keep him if Brady is healthy by training camp.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:20 PM
what a catch by brown. well done.
ok flacco, we need more points.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:20 PM
Ronnie Brown nice catch sir.
I would hope so cracker, Cassell is getting paid 1 mill less than Brady
January 4th, 2009 at 3:21 PM
THAT’S HUGE! i have balt at -3.5! so now miami will score a TD and need a 2-pointer to make me lose. i will be sweating later.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:21 PM
I think even if they are certain Brady’s ready to play already, they have to franchise Cassel, if only to keep him from getting courted to the Meadowlands.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:24 PM
they are going to get at least a 2nd rounder for him, the eagles got a 2nd for A.J. Feely.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:25 PM
Mort is reporting the Pats are franchising Cassell,
When did the Patriots get Sam Cassell?
Seriously though, I’ll wait until Jay Glaser reports it.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:25 PM
why come out with a bomb ? that just not a high-percentage play. just run the football
January 4th, 2009 at 3:26 PM
Yeah I wouldnt trust Mort either Jay but at least Mike Lombardi reported on it first. Mike and Belichick are pretty close.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:27 PM
Yeah that was some completely retarded play calling right there.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:30 PM
reed almost had his 3rd pick there. come on ravens D, please get another turnover
January 4th, 2009 at 3:31 PM
fucking dolphins are rallying there. nice play call with the misdirection
January 4th, 2009 at 3:31 PM
I had no problem with the play calls. Of course, my favorite team’s most “successful” coach was Jim Mora, so I have an aversion to a team going into the fetal position on offense in the 4th quarter of a playoff game.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:33 PM
ricky just trucked bart scott? wow. pothead’s still got it
January 4th, 2009 at 3:34 PM
jay – dont confuse clock mgmt with “fetal position.” i like to run for two reasons: eat clock, keep your defense off the field.
and it’s not like the RBs stink – you’ve two big boys back there who are pretty good.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:35 PM
two dumb plays by the fins
January 4th, 2009 at 3:37 PM
You’re right. The bombs were a little Payton-ish, as a Saints fan. “We’re up 11. They’ll never expect two bombs.”
January 4th, 2009 at 3:43 PM
The now healthy Titans are going to absolutely smoke these assholes
January 4th, 2009 at 3:43 PM
thank you, willis mcgahee
January 4th, 2009 at 3:44 PM
you think, mole? i dont know how much i’d trust collins in the playoffs. if they can stop the titans run, i like b’mores chances
on another note: VT-Duke tonight. could be fun.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
flacco caps a 1st playoff game with a nice TD run. warm up the bus.
other than joey porter recovering that early fumble, did he do anything?
January 4th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
The sneak is making a huge comeback.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:48 PM
I don’t like the Ravens offense to do anything against the Titans defense. And I trust Collins to be drunk enough to control himself.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:52 PM
Miami is a terrible sports town in general, no one gets support even when they’re good, which is rare.
it is also a transient city. and a small one. and how much of the population is hispanic/cuban?
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0763098.html
has a small population than Oakland. way smaller than jax
TBL: Small city? You kidding me?? Remember, Jacksonville is the biggest “city” in the country, in size. Miami-Dade is the 8th largest county in the US (2.3 million people, 62% of which speak Spanish-lol). This market is a joke, and not because they are smaller than Oakland. Bugffalo’s county (Erie) and 1/3 the number of people in Miami and sold out all their home games
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_most_populous_counties_in_the_United_States
January 4th, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Seriously, Mariotti to AOL?
I trust you’ll have a pot tomorrow, TBL.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:54 PM
Bugffalo = Bum-fuckallo= Buffalo
January 4th, 2009 at 3:56 PM
Tenn has the best OL in football. They gave Collins all day against Pitt and we only got him once. We shut down the run but Flacco was awful and Ten won 13-10. It will come down to a couple of key plays. I give us a 40% chance of winning.
January 4th, 2009 at 4:00 PM
Bugffalo’s county (Erie) and 1/3 the number of people in Miami and sold out all their home games
Jefferson and Orleans parish are the same way too, and there’s been a waiting list for tickets since after Katrina.
And then there’s Green Bay.
And the Hornets are the same way too. They’re just under 17,000 a night. Only 500 a night from passing, you guessed it, Miami.
I can’t understand how a city like as small, displaced, and economically shitty as New Orleans can support two teams adequately, but Miami can’t do shit in any of their four sports.
January 4th, 2009 at 4:04 PM
The one thing college football has over the NFL is that they don’t take tv timeouts after a kickoff. I’ll be watching the Philly game on delay so I can fast forward through the endless ads.
January 4th, 2009 at 4:13 PM
new game post is up
January 4th, 2009 at 10:26 PM
It’s a shit stadium that is a pain in the ass to get to
Huh? I saw the regular season Ravens/Dolphins game in October. The stadium’s right off 95; I went through the toll plaza and was parked and drinking beer three minutes later (didn’t get there particularly early either). Gave it about an hour after the game and got right out of there. If you want to see a clusterfuck/pain in the ass to get to stadium try Giants Stadium. Combine it with dirt-cheap airfare, hotel, rental car and ticket–got a second row twenty-five yardline seat through Ticketmaster, that’s NEVER happened and I’ve been going to NFL games for twenty years–and Dolphin Stadium is fantastic.
