Hawkeye Radio Announcer in Hot Water After Partying at The Outback Bowl
College Football, Media Gossip/Musings January 10th. 2009, 2:30pm
Ed Podolak is a former Iowa Hawkeye quarterback and running back and a member of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Hall of Fame. He’s been working for Iowa radio broadcasts since 1982. When the Hawkeyes went to The Outback Bowl, Podolak went with them. While there, he ended up partying and some of the pictures ended up online. You can see them at The Wiz of Odds. (I told you mustaches were making a come back.)
Needless to say, the Iowa AD isn’t impressed. This wasn’t Podolak’s first alcohol-related incident since he’s been on the air at Iowa.
In 1997, Iowa City police charged Podolak with public intoxication and interference with official acts after campus police found him sleeping in the grass on the University of Iowa Pentacrest. At the time of the arrest, a blood test found he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.23.
Iowa officials said at the time of the 1997 incident that another arrest on similar charges could prompt them to dismiss Podolak from the radio broadcast.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Podolak next, seeing as how there isn’t anything to be charged with. Except of course embarrassment to the University and himself.

Well, at least he wasn’t driving when he was that drunk.

You have no proof!

Come on – what’s the big deal. Bill Hillgrove, the play by play guy for the Steelers and Pitt football/basketball, is a legendary drinker. You can find him on the Oakland campus bars all the time.

If there’s one things Iowans do, it’s drink. It’s basically the only thing to do in this freakin state.

@Roeth – Are there pictures of him pulling a girl’s top to get a peek on Facebook?

That’s not true.

If Kansas hadn’t shot themselves in the foot 85 times in the first half maybe they would have won this freakin game.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:22 PM
And making a few freaking free throws wouldn’t have hurt.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:23 PM
If Michigan State hadn’t kicked Kansas’ ass all game, then maybe Kansas could have lost by a pt.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:26 PM
haha if you think MSU beat Kansas more than they beat themselves then good for you. I’m proud of your optimism.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:29 PM
We outscored them in the second half! Whoo wheee.
Good game, Sparty. We got whupped. The refs, Bill Self, and now Tom Izzo are determined to make this a 3 hour game.

Fetch it is nap time for you. Don’t annoy us adults. Kansas may have held the gun, but Michigan State was the one pulling the trigger all day. Maybe Kansas can watch the game tape and see how a real team makes shots, doesn’t turn the ball over, rebounds, forces turnovers, and actually completes their alley-oop attempts.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:32 PM
KC-you guys have some good young talent, should be really good next season.
Fetch’s terrible commentary withstanding, it was a good afternoon.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:33 PM
You’re right, they do need to learn how to not beat themselves.
KC- what do you think they need, top 3 in the Big 12? Top four? They only have one good non-conference wins and two so-so ones.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:34 PM
and actually completes their alley-oop attempts.
That’s a low blow, Sparty. We only have one tall semi-athletic white guy that is capable of that. Sometimes.

Man Duke is playing all sorts of D against Florida State. Granted it’s Florida State, but they’re playing really well.

Way to reach for the stars…

Their RPI sucks. Fortunately, the Big 12 north is an abortion, so they should go 7-3 worst case against the North. Split the South and that’s 21 wins prior to the Big 12 tourney. I would think it will come down to a situation where they will need to win one game in the Big 12 Tourney to assure a bid.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:41 PM
They might just split the South
They’ll beat Ok State, A&M and Texas Tech for sure, so if they can get a lucky one against Baylor that will help. Or Texas or OU (ha!)
The North sucks except Neb. and Mizzou though so yea that will help. Just split with those two and take care of business against the rest.
The Pomeroy rankings have Kansas 19th so statistically they aren’t doing as bad as they look.
Interestingly enough, MSU is 27th which is odd. Partially because their luck is a +.129 and Kansas’s is -.37. Also I think Pomeroy has underrated MSU’s non-conference schedule a bit.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:43 PM
Also K-State is 14th in the Pomeroy Ratings, so hopefully KU pulls off a split there. Although seeing as it’s K-State and we own them maybe they’ll sweep.

Turn to the Deuce. Neb and Mizzou are putting on a clinic on how to play basketball. A clinic for 6th grade girls. Goodness. The Big 12 has been in existence for 11 years or so, and only KU and ISU have been successful in the North. Mizzou averages like 5000 fans a game. Sad.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:55 PM
That game, somehow, is on regular ESPN.

Ed Podolak just had his name splashed all over the internet after Sproles’ huge game against the Colts. Podolak’s 350 yards are still the highest total yards ever gained in a playoff game.
Probably not so happy to be back in the news again so soon….
