Can the Chargers Do the Impossible and Pull Yet Another Road Stunner?
NFL January 11th. 2009, 4:46pm
Perhaps “stunner” isn’t the right word – the Ravens and Eagles had momentum on their side, and many considered their Division games as tossups – but it would certainly be a surprise if Trash Talking Rivers went into snowy Pittsburgh and took down the mighty Steelers with little Darren Sproles by his side (LT is inactive with that groin problem). The underdogs have dominated this weekend, going 3-0, which makes anyone who took all the home teams look very Cris Carter-like.
Who’s ready for two warm-weather Championship games next week? That’ll be the case if the Chargers somehow pull this off.

For the next three hours, I shall root for the Steelers for the first time since Super Bowl XXX. Then, I will root for the Ravens to destroy them next week.
Wow, Sproles is killing the Steelers “best D in the league” so far. Now I don’t feel so bad about last week.
January 11th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
holy shit!
3 plays, TD!
7-0 SD
January 11th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
That was quick.
January 11th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Damn that was impressive.
January 11th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Wow…two minutes in and Vincent Jackson destroys the Steelers with the deep ball. The Colts doubled him all game and he didn’t have a catch. That was probably a better strategy as they only ended up allowing 17 points in regulation.
January 11th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
whew, glad i didnt up my bet with the steelers. i am close to doing so.
no mention of VJ’s drunk driving accident? Steelers D just got housed on that first series.
January 11th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
So if the Chargers win the Super Bowl, will people talk about how they probably couldn’t have done it if not for LT’s injury? That’d be an awfully shitty blight to have on your hall of fame resume.
January 11th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Beautiful throw by Rivers. I know I’m in the minority here, but I love the guy.
January 11th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Nance just mentioned the DUI. Jackson was my top fantasy WR

January 11th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Nice play call there by Tomlin. Musta been boning up on his Belichick during the bye week. God, if the Chargers win this it will just reconfirm that the Colts blew a golden opportunity during this down NFL year to steal a Super Bowl win.

January 11th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
OK, I just read a rumor on SI that the panthers might get Favre…someone please shoot me now.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Rivers is good and Sproles is an electric waterbug, but the Chargers ain’t making the Super Bowl if their o-line doesn’t step it up. Four sacks given up last week and it’s looking shakey so far.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Is there an echo in here?
January 11th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
They had Favre playing last night, you know throwing all those costly
INTs in a playoff game. Oops that was Jake Delhomme, Mr. Bojangles
January 11th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Am I the only one who noticed him RESISTING arrest? He would NOT sit still, action had to be taken.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Death?
January 11th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Vote republican.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
rivera is thinking, “wow, they run better than indy.”
or
“man i wish i had urlacher again”
January 11th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
“Am I the only one who noticed him RESISTING arrest? He would NOT sit still, action had to be taken.”
Yeah and that action had be fucking shooting him?? There were like three cops surrounding him. They could have taken him down
January 11th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
I don’t think resisting is the way to go on defending the cop on that shooting. His facial expression looks pretty shocked, so fucked up accidental shooting is probably a better defense than resisting.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Considering Indy was the worst running team in the league and their offensive line was so bad at run blocking that the Colts ran an empty set on a what would have been a game-clinching third and two, Rivera shouldn’t be surprised. He didn’t look like a genius in Super Bowl XLI when the opponent could run the ball, either.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Is it possible the guy was just the biggest dumbass in the history of dumbasses and he got his gun and taser mixed up? I mean, it’s not like the officer in question is holding a PHD or anything.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
dont think it’s a catch …
January 11th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
That’s coming back, but Pittsburgh might want to think about taking away the deep ball. Make Norv beat you with Sproles and Gates. It’s a lot harder to go the length of the field five and six yards at a time without turning it over than it is to just chuck it past single coverage.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Am I the only one who noticed him RESISTING arrest? He would NOT sit still, action had to be taken.
Death?
I will probably get shit for this, and he sure didn’t deserve to die, but I would NEVER want to be a cop today. People have NO respect for them, shoot them like never before, and have cameras to record every single incident, whether it is fully in context or not. It’s like the manufactured middle school “fights” on youtube and the “Don’t tase me, bro” assclown at UF, who did that completely for the cameras to get his 15 minutes of fame.
It’s like what happened at ABU Ghraib. How do you watch little kids walk up to you and blow themselves and your buddies up, behead innocent civilians on camera, and not want to do something to them? Then you do it, and YOU go to prison for 50 years. I don’t get it.
probably will get shit for this, but WTF
January 11th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
bsanders -
That’s was my initial thought when you see his body language. Like, “Oh, shit, what have I just done?”
Still, completely inexcusable. This is murder. You can’t pull a gun and shoot someone who is already handcuffed even if it was supposed to be his taser.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
why would you do a fake there and give SD half a field? silly move if you ask me.
pin them deep and win the FP battle.
January 11th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
Oh, I completely agree. But in this case the guy was face down on the ground. I don’t think he was going to hurt anyone from that position. This certainly falls under the tag “colossal fuck up.”
January 11th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
sanders you have a point.
The did take his down, watch it again.
Lesson learned? Don’t protest unless you wanan get shot.
/kent state’d
January 11th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
I laughed out loud at that.
/Going to hell’d
//Hope the booze isn’t all Flaming Moes
January 11th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Not that it matters since the Titans-Ravens game certainly proved otherwise, but through one half San Diego sure looks like the better team.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Well we’ll party down there then cause I’m sure I’m going to hell too.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
“The did take his down, watch it again.”
So since he’s on the ground, there’s ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to shoot him. How you can argue for that is absurd
January 11th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
No reason? None at all you say? Well he DID get shot so doesn’t that tell you there HAS to be a reason? Rather you agree with the reason or not, there was one. I dont know I wasn’t there WE did not see the whole thing, we only saw a part of it, how do you knwo he didn’t already try some shit or maybe he threaten the cops family etc etc , who knows I dont, but what I do know is we employ these people these HUMANS to do a job we WONT do ourselves and them judge them. They have a split second the a make a decision and we get weeks, months to tear it apart.
Don’t be so quick to blame the cop for doing his job. His job is to keep order, he did that. Case closed.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
“Well he DID get shot so doesn’t that tell you there HAS to be a reason?”
WTF kind of logic is that? So anytime something horrible happens there is a good reason for it?
“Don’t be so quick to blame the cop for doing his job.”
That’s just moronic. Shooting someone who is secured on the ground is certainly not a cop just “doing his job.” Wow.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Believe me, I am NOT a cop lover by any means. I have a teenage son who has been stopped by the “Po-lice” here many times, put to the ground, gun to his head (he says) and searched for drugs, and we live in the nicest suburb in Fort Lauderdale. A lot of the cops down here look like WWF roid freaks, but, on the other side, these kids are fucking assholes to them, don’t listen and mouth off to them, and a lot of them carry weapons. Seven cops got killed here in the last 18 months.
The cops just killed a guy here the other day when they tased him and it had no effect and he drove away and dragged the cop w/ him, so they opened fire. It’s like the Wild West nowadays!
On the video, it looked like he definitely did not plan to shoot him with a gun, which is an “accident” but so tragic. The cop is fucked anyway, so it doesn’t matter in this discussion, because a jury/insurance company will see the video and he has no chance.
Until cops start getting respect again, plan on seeing videos like this over and over.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Dont be so quick to be stupid.
It is not a cops job to shoot an unarmed man handcuffed on the ground. That is not “keeping order”. The expression on the cops face tells me it was an accident. Once lawyers get a hold of this it could get ugly for the cop though.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
I get the idea of wanting to not rush to judgment on the cop, but I don’t think you’re doing a great job of it. I mean, as part of your reasoning there you just rattled off “threaten the cops family”, I mean, if that’s how the situation played out, you just moved it from negligence to murder.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
I wonder if the cop had eaten some donuts prior to shooting the guy? Could always invoke the twinkie defense. It’s worked before.
/Dan White’d
January 11th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
“Until cops start getting respect again, plan on seeing videos like this over and over.”
And as long as cops keep doing shit like this or there continue to be incidences like the Sean Bell disaster, plan on hearing pessimism about cops. Just because they wear uniforms doesn’t not make them angelic beings
January 11th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
im all for rebellion if the cause is just … but around trigger-happy cops, i just think the move is to do what they say.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Ew, who the fuck goes to a restaurant and orders a hot ham and cheese sandwich? Isn’t that like going out for dinner and asking for the fired balogna? Gross. Better effort, Hardees. Bring back the chicken!
January 11th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
As long as you at least spit on the ground in defiance once they tell you to move along.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
This goes the same for trigger-happy criminals. Of course, when I got robbed I did exactly what they said and they still fired 12 times as they drove away. So maybe the lesson is don’t leave your laptop, buy a real doll and order in?
January 11th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Wow, that video is crazy, and pretty scary. I got caught drinking with some friends in what we thought was an abandon lot. Cops came and pulled guns on us because the lot was actually a former meth house they still had under surveillance. I’m sure glad I didn’t go up against that cop. Not that I was provoking anyone, but still, they thought we were drug dealers.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Crumpler wishes he had jumped over the Baltimore defenders the way heath miller just did.
SD defense gassed. rivers needs to come through here with a drive here.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
SD Defense – Merriman= that
January 11th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
I didn’t way it was a good reason. I just said “A” reason.
I’m not saying he deserved it, I’m just saying everytime soemthing liek this happens we only get half a story and everyone always jumps to conclusion. You go do the job, I guarentee in 6mo to a year you will be in the same situation where you think you are doing your job and somthing fuckd up happens and some tard 100 yards away catches it on his phone half way through it. I know some cops are bad and some everyone is bad, just cause someone gets shot face down and handcuffed doesn’t mean they didnt deserve it. Restrains do not mean you are out of harm, Mason of the Knicks got maced 5 times and kept comming, he’s lucky he didn’t get shot too.
I don’t know, maybe I’ll go buy a real doll too.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
At least the Mannings can sit around and joke about how they’re the only ones who beat both of the AFC Championship Game participants. I’m sure that makes their losses less painful.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
sproles just burned through that hole and the Chargers are back in biz
January 11th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
i really hope that is picked off.
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 11th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
chargers may want to challenge, just to give that tired defense some more time on the sideline.
if im the steelers i call two runs, and then have big ben dial up another 3rd down special.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
It’s gotta suck to break a long run then watch your QB give the ball right back.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
I don’t know why, but I really don’t like the Mannings. At all.
However I do enjoy Paytons commericals.

January 11th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
OK Pitt, let’s put this bitch on ice with a TD here. that defense HAS to be trained. SD has run one offensive player this quarter!
January 11th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
oh man! hit the dude in the head. BAD BREAK FOR SD
January 11th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
can we go the entire quarter without SD having the ball more than 17seconds?
January 11th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
SD should challenge the backward pass … oops, no more left!
January 11th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
wouldn’t have been able to, play was blown dead, no?
January 11th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
now HERE’s A SPOT i’d go for it if i were tomlin.
January 11th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
i’d go on a pitch to parker, but that’s me. you can put this thing away with a TD, and absolute worst case scenario is that the Chargers go 99 yards and get a TD and two and are within a FG.
i like risks when you have a cushion.
January 11th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
QB sneak is the way to go…ben is a big boy, he’ll get it. And yes, you should definitely go for it.
January 11th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
oh man, i dont think he got in
January 11th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
i dont like that up the middle shit. why not get it to your speedster on the corner? bad play call tomlin.
January 11th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
You either sneak it with ben, or use Parker. Never use your FB in that situation, it never works (unless your fullback went to Ledford Senior Highschool).
January 11th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

January 11th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Can we re-do these 4 games next weekend and just scratch the off week between the championshiop games and the Super Bowl?
January 11th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

/Rooting for the Ravens so people don’t elevate Big Ben the way they did Bradshaw.
January 11th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
do you onside kick it here, or wait and hope your tired defense can get a stop?
January 11th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
I hope not too, but being from Cleveland I can not in good standing cheer for anyone then lol
January 11th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I hear ya, and it’s hard to root for Baltimore with the way they treated the Colts players and fans before and during that 2006 playoff game, but in our instant “that was the best ever society” I’m afraid columnists and bloggers would lose their minds and start proclaiming Big Ben as one of the greatest QB’s of all time with a Pitt Super Bowl win during this watered down year.
January 11th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
gosh i just know pitt is going to blow this cover.
