Detroit, Are You Ready for USC QB Mark Sanchez?
NFL January 15th. 2009, 3:45pm
Surprised USC Mark Sanchez is turning pro? Why?
* Heading into the bowl games, Sam Bradford was widely regarded as the best QB in the country, and the best NFL prospect at the position.
* Sanchez has one of the best games in Rose Bowl history.
* Sam Bradford, jinxed by the Heisman, didn’t dominate in the Title game.
* Bradford is non-committal about leaving school. Probably checking in with “people” about his draft status.
* One day before the deadline, Bradford says he’s staying at OU.
* Sanchez decides to announce he’s going Pro.
The Lions need a QB to help one of the worst offenses in the league and put fannies in the seats. You can’t draft an OL after an 0-16 season. So is Sanchez or Matt Stafford your guy? The draft combine should be fun – one’s accurate, and one has a cannon.
Sanchez (turns 23 in November): 6-3, 227 lbs. Right.
Stafford (turns 21 in February): 6-3, 237 lbs. Righty.
Sanchez seems like the safer, ready-made pick; Stafford is still a young guy, probably with more potential since he has a bigger arm. We’re not huge on workout wonders at the draft combine, but we’d go into it with the idea that Sanchez was our guy, and Stafford would have to be incredibly impressive in order to become the pick.
We’d guess the “loser” here might go to the Minnesota Vikings.

Jim Schwartz is being reported as the new Lions head coach. Hopefully they go defense with the #1 pick. Not QB.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Jesus, they are going lineman first and then defense there-after. The new philosophy is be able to run the ball, stop the run and build defense. Stop with this “Detroit is going to pick QB” bullshit. Knoww hat you are talking about before you post. This is garbage.

USC QB Mark Sanchez, are you ready for Detroit?
January 15th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Uh Sanchez is not a lefty.
You can’t draft an OL after an 0-16 season? How do you think they got to this point? BY NOT BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS OF A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM, WHICH IS BOTH SIDES OF THE LINE. I hate the Lions and still all your talk about them talking a QB #1 is making me sick. I didn’t think anyone could do it, but you would be worse than Millen.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
From the rulebook of retarded as fuck.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Sanchez isn’t a lefty, at all.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Maggs apparently not a fan of hyperbole.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
I am actually not a fan of awful, poorly thought out un-insightful posts about who a blogger from New york would draft if he were running the Lions. This is a joke.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
is Leinart still at USC or something? Not a lefty. Have you watched him play?
January 15th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
the Lions most definitely are not going to draft a QB. pains me, but I agree with Maggs, they will go OL then defense.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
QB? Why do they need a QB? They already have Drew Stanton waiting in the wings.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Maggs have you ever met cthomashowell?
January 15th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
I keep waiting for the Lions to draft another WR.
The smart thing is to go lineman when there isn’t a prospect who is head-and-shoulders above the rest. If they fail at the drafted position, they can still be moved around the line and find use there (like the Raiders did with Robert Gallery).
The point is that until we see who Detroit hires as its new braintrust, we should wait to prognosticate.
As for Sanchez…maybe bottom of Round 1 at this point. Of what I saw of him this year he’s more Leinart than Palmer.
January 15th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
the browns are trading them DA for AP straight up
January 15th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Mayhew and Llewelyn. Already in place.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Whether people like it or not, Matt Stafford will be the first QB taken. He will have a better arm than Sanchez, more mobility than Sanchez and more experience than Sanchez. Also, Bradfrod was only #1 according to Todd McShay. Almost every “NFL guy” had him going 10-20 with Stafford the clear #1. I know a lot of people on this board think Stafford is overrated but trust me, when he works out and takes the tests that NFL scouts give he will jump to the lead for good. He certainly makes too many mistakes but so did Matt Ryan (20+ picks his SR year) and he worked out well. Stafford has the best arm, by far, and will run a legit 4.6 which will cause scouts to go apeshit.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
+ Infinity, Tampa.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
The “braintrust” is in place. Former Millen lackey Martin Mayhew is running the personnel side.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Between the stupidity of thinking the Lions are taking either of these QB’s #1 and saying Sanchez is a lefty…this might be in the lead for worst post ever by someone not named Intern Bill
January 15th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
how many number 1 picks that were QBs have won the Super Bowl? I think 5, and two of them were traded by the teams that selected them.
Peyton, Eli, Elway, Aikman and Bradshaw.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Breaking: Jim Schwartz is new HC of Detroit Lions
January 15th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Most definitely going defense.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
If the QBs available aren’t worthy of the #1 pick, then don’t pick them. These aren’t. Look elsewhere. Take the best player on the board (that isn’t a WR). This team needs help everywhere. That’s obvious.
And I definitely think Stafford is overrated. I agree Scouts will drool over him, but he’ll be a bust. He doesn’t have it.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
The Lions could take Sanchez, just not with the #1 pick. They have the #20. They have the first pick of the second round. It’s not unconceivable they take a quarterback at some point.

what does Mark Mayock say about these QBs? The talent evaluating begins and ends with him.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
I agree everyone loves him I dont think he can handle the pressure.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Matt Stafford will be the first QB taken.
Agreed. I just don’t know if he’s going #1.
Better question: if he doesn’t, does he fall far? I can see the Niners drafting a QB, otherwise it’s wait till the Vikes come up.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Detroit will have the 1st overall pick, the 20th, and the 33rd. They can do whatever the fuck they want. If they want to take the best overall QB #1, that’d be fine. They’ll still be able to get a quality OL w/the 20th or 33rd.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
I’m torn on Stafford. He has more natural talent than any QB since Peyton coming out, but he seems to take plays off sometimes. I think if he lands with a team that can afford to sit him for most or all of his first year he could be really good. If he goes to a team that insits are starting him from jump street he could be in big trouble. He is smart enough in my opinion that I don’t see him as a giant bust the likes of Joey Heisman but there are a lot of questions surrounding him. I do know the NFL likes him a lot though.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
“breaking news” …. look at comment #1.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
GOTGI-more natural talent than Matty-Ice?
January 15th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
I think Sanzchez might be there at #20 for the Lions to grab him. They may have to trade up to #17 or somewhere like that to get him but I would take Andre Smith at #1 and then go from there. They have a solid young back in Smith and if they could get an o-line around him they could run the ball and then mix in some deep play action to Megatron.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
seriously? sorry to be an asshole but blech.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Breaking news, Magglio … Kevin Duckworth is dead and John Amaechi is gay.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Yes…way more. The difference is Matty Ice is really fucking smart and knows how to read defenses like a champ. But in terms of throwing and running, Stafford has him beat easily.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
smart man.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

January 15th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
GotG, if the Lions 1st round played out like that, their trade with the Cowboys would immediately take on Herschel Walker to Minnesota proportions.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Jesus even Chelsea Chris has turned into a dickfore. This site is like cancer aids. SORRY I DIDN’T SEE THAT PART OF YOUR POST. Y’asshole!
January 15th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Before we go speculating on who they’ll pick, we should wait and see who the new head coach is. Whoever it is will no doubt play a huge role in shaping their draft.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
If Jesus Christ isn’t in this draft I don’t think it matters who the lions draft at #1
January 15th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
I think the Lions are better off trading down, taking the best defensive player, addressing the offensive line with the #20 pick, see if they can take Nate Davis with the 33 and then split the rest of the picks between OL and defense. I’m not a huge fan of taking an offensive lineman in the top 5 when you need as much as the Lions do.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Yes it would. That trade was one of the dumber things Jerry Jones has done and that says something. I really think the lions should take Smith and then try and steal Sanchez late in the first and then draft 6 defensive players. However, now that the Titans’ DC is their coach he may want to put his mark on the team immediately and draft a defensive player like the guy out of WAKE, but that would be a mistake in my opinion.

Tampa-I am decided to go back to UF.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
ha ha ha.
dickfore. haven’t heard that one since 7th or 8th grade. excellent retro put-down.
Trivia question:
Who was the last defensive coordinator hired by the Lions as HC?
Answer:
Wayne Fontes!!!!!!
Maybe we can aspire to alternating 9-7 and 7-9 seasons once again.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Lions will win a playoff game this century before the Cowfags.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
What could be crazy is that if Stafford doesn’t go to the Chiefs he could slip to the 49ers or further. That would be something to watch. Though nothing could be better than watching Brady Quinn fall as far as he did in that ridiculous suit and his douchebag hair cut.
/I loathe ND
January 15th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
He already said he’s going back to FL, didn’t he?
January 15th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
I mean what if they hire a defensive minded head coach? Do you really think they’d draft a QB then?
January 15th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Chelsa, Barry Sanders isn’t there. Without him, Fontes would have had alternating 1-15 and 3-13 seasons…
January 15th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Isnt’ D-Line the safest pick a team can make with the first pick than o-line? Busts are all over the place, but wouldn’t it make sense to get some o-line vets in free agency to protect the QB and pick defense in the draft?
/works in madden all the time.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
He’s probably going mid to late 1st round unless he wows some team at a workout.
#17 Jets
#18 Bears
#19 Bucs
#20 Lions
#23 Vikings
Somewhere in there.

Damn it to hell. The comments kept coming fast.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Not to pile on, but this post really is full-retard. When the hell did Sanchez become a top-10 pick, let alone #1 overall? This is the guy that started 16 games in his entire college career, right?
January 15th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Looks like nobody’s going to die from that plane crashing in the Hudson. Good news. Apparently a flock of geese took down the plane.
Far as this post goes, lefty? And there’s nothing wrong with drafting some O-linemen after an 0-16 season. That’s how you rebuild a team.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
here is a picture of the plane that crashed in the Hudson River, crazy.
January 15th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

The Hudson River, called Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk , the Great Mohegan by the Iroquois, or as the Lenape Native Americans called it in Unami, Muhheakantuck, is a 315-mile river that flows from north to south through eastern New York State and forms the border between New York City and New Jersey at its mouth before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.

TBL- which games did you see Sanchez play this year? Ohio state and the Rose Bowl? He was unbelievably mediocre during the middle of the season against some horrendous Pac 10 defenses.
The fact that you write that Sanchez is a lefty makes you lose any credibility. Hey guess who else had a great Rose Bowl game?
John David Booty.
How did that turn out? Oh I’ll tell you. I saw him at a bar last saturday watching the Ravens.
January 15th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
I can see the Niners drafting a QB
not happening. Niners are looking for S, DT, RT, WR, ILB prolly in that order
January 15th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Holy shit you would think people would not make this a qualification for being a pro QB after wonderlick
