I don’t really enjoy hockey but I remember the Avs-Wings rivalry of the late 90s. I’ll never forget this brawl and when McCarty absolutely kicked the shit outta Lemiux.

I remember getting Claude Lemieux confused with Mario Lemieux in NHL ‘93 for the Sega Genesis. That proves to things:
1. Claude is really old
b. I know nothing about hockey

and Claude has been playing since 1983?? Do hockey players ever retire?

Hockey players always play into their 40’s. Unless they suck!

That’s a pretty physical sport to be playing in your 40’s. Sure, they don’t get hit as often as NFL players, but they do get hit… hard. I respect this. I don’t watch it more than once a year, but respect it.

The one where Lemieux absolutely blows that guy up face first into the side boards was his best. Fuck the Red Wings.

I was going for more of a highlight reel type thing. I considered that one. I also enjoy this one where he does a similar turtling type thing and Cam Neely grabs him by the back of the helmet and slams him into the boards.

My theory is that in football your body gets ground down to the point of not functioning. Baseball you start to lose bat speed. Basketball you lose your legs.
I think with hockey, because you play in shifts. I think when you get older, you can still go nearly as hard just not as many times. So you play 5-10min instead of 20. I also think because everyone is on skates and the NHL rink isn’t that big, the variation in speed isn’t as large, so you can make up for whatever physical attributes you lose with positioning and intelligence.

Guys like him, Chelios, and Roenick never were really built around being the fastest player. It’s like Julio Franco being able to play well into his forties.
