this is a pretty typical practice. chain furniture stores are always going out of business and do it all the time. They get people in with the huge sign out front that says 50-70% off everything. Of course that is after a 200% markup.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:16 AM
Which WAG is that, and why wasn’t she out front instead of that guy?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:17 AM
Cheryl Cole, no?
Hey TBL — You don’t think the WSJ model can work for the NYT, right? Why not?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:18 AM
Come on now Nick – you know that’s TBL’s fave WAG of all-time Cheryl (I know the hideous leg tattoo isn’t showing to further clue you in, but still)
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:19 AM
Great win for the Hokies last night!!!!!
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:21 AM
saw that pic yesterday and was hoping it would make it to the roundup
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:22 AM
Cole, for sure.
WSJ is a niche publication, isn’t it? NYT much more general.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:23 AM
omg Lost was mental last night.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:24 AM
wait so the browns only employ 37.5 people?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:25 AM
Save it for the recap post

January 22nd, 2009 at 8:28 AM
lol @ sparty. 915, baby!
and we’ll get to the spartans later, too.
can’t believe no comments on the baby dialing 911. that’s wild, wild stuff
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:29 AM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:31 AM
Because LeBron’s aren’t funny?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:31 AM
Not nearly as much as it used to be, right? Obviously compared with the Times any other paper is a step below.
But the WSJ international section has really gotten damn good, no? And 5-6 million uniques a month, compared to 15-16 for the NYTimes (with the Journal growing faster) — it just seems like the Times need to try some way to get more revenue from the web before it’s too late.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:31 AM
No dunk contest for Mr. 11 minutes a game, Joe Alexander
That’s too bad for my man Vanilla Sky. I voted for him. I think we all know who is winning the dunk contest
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:32 AM
TBL- I think we need to talk about NJIT. Much more important.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:32 AM
too bad one of those 15 employees wasnt the owner
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:33 AM
WSJ is a niche publication, isn’t it? NYT much more general.
Wha?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:33 AM
I would say that sucks for the father but you can’t have a 500 plant grow operation and still be a good father.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:36 AM
TBL, you going to do an Oscar nominations post? I’m going with Slumdog, Frost/Nixon, Milk, Ben Button and (begrudgingly) The Dark Knight as my best pic picks. I hope against hope they pick Doubt over Dark Knight, though. Give Nolan a best director nod if you like, but come on…
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:36 AM
Crap I just realized they showed two Lost episodes last night!?!?! I turned off my tv at 10. Crap!
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:39 AM
Just cue it up online at work.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:41 AM
I’m on it Roeth.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:41 AM
I saw Doubt on tuesday, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep had great performances but I didnt like the movie that much. I thought it was going to be a lot more in-depth.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:41 AM
Angelina Jolie over Sally Hawkins? Get fucked Academy! And Brad Pitt for best actor? Starfuckers!
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:41 AM
Dark Knight’s getting shut out. If Nolan didn’t get a best director nod, it’s over. Good.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:43 AM
no nomination for heath ledger?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:44 AM
At least they shut out Eastwood and Gran Sucko, too.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:45 AM
Ledger got nominated, but it didn’t get a screenplay, director or best pic nod like all the fanboys were saying it would.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:45 AM
Damn I just read that little blurb on Artie’s story. Can’t wait to read the article, although after listening every morning, I’m sure it’s nothing new. I personally used to freakin love Artie, but he’s really been getting old recently with his behavior, he’s getting annoying. Anyone?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:46 AM
but we’re huge fans of Lange
Really? I could never tell…
baby accidentally dials 911 – police show up to find father’s 500-plant pot stash
Just another reason NOT to own a home phone. Cells are sufficient.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:47 AM
That’s the whole thing, sponge. It left so much to your imagination, it let you figure out what you thought went on, and let you connect the dots. It didn’t dumb it down and over simplify things like most obvious movies. I thought it was fantastic.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:48 AM
i like him when hes there but when hes obviously out of it(yesterday, or a couple weeks ago when he was mad aggresive to everyone) i can’t stand him. I’m seriously expecting Artie to die this year, poor guy.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:48 AM
At least they shut out Eastwood and Gran Sucko, too
Agreed. While I didn’t think it sucked, I was extremely disappointed after seeing the reviews it received. It was really just a bunch of racial slurs with no hot chicks.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:51 AM
It was really just a bunch of racial slurs with no hot chicks.
Also called a Friday night at Tar Baby’s crib.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:53 AM
I agree, I like my slurs to be accompanied with sluts.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:53 AM
is anyone watching the Oscar nominees?
i have it on mute because canseco’s talking a lot of shit on the Stern show.
Anne Hathaway got nominated for best actress? niceeeeee
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:56 AM
hopefully she’ll take advantage of that and wear another see thru dress to the show
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:57 AM
I haven’t seen The Reader yet but I haven’t heard it’s all that great, but apparently the Academy feels differently. Still think Winslet and Dicaprio should’ve gotten nods for Rev. Road. Jolie in Changeling and Pitt for Button are total starfucking nominations.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:57 AM
Did you see him last night on PTI, said his big dunk involved a phone booth and props to Dr. J. I have no idea what this means.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:59 AM
Anyone have a link where to see the Oscar nominations?
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:59 AM
@coop – the phone booth is probably a reference to his superman costume from last year. I think he goes into the phone booth wearing the superman costume and emerges in a Dr. J get-up.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:00 AM
@ill – here you go.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:00 AM
Slumdog is going to win but I’d vote for Frost/Nixon or Milk.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:01 AM
what are the best picture movies?
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:02 AM
It’s Slumdog, Frost/Nixon, Button, The Reader and Milk. The Reader is the only “Shocker.”
But let’s stop talking movies because Miz think it’s gay.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:05 AM
Thanks, Miz!
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:05 AM
I don’t think it’s gay, bsanders. I just like pretending that I think it’s gay. carry on.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:06 AM

- Try Oscar.com.
/I’m Oscar……com!
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:06 AM
Holy shit – they nominated Downey, Jr. for Tropic Thunder!
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:06 AM
miz
- No worries. It certainly beats Gossip Girl or Duke/UNC in my book.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:08 AM
@Roeth – I just watched Tropic Thunder for the first time this past weekend. while I thought the movie itself was a little overrated, I thought Downey Jr. did an excellent job playing his character. there were a few times that I forgot he was actually white.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:09 AM
“Lance? Who the fuck is Lance?”
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:10 AM
Robert Downey Jr. is the man. I loved him in Natural Born Killers.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:10 AM
Miz – I didn’t think there was anyway the Academy would nominate someone playing in blackface
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:10 AM
@Miz and Roeth:
If i had to vote, I’d be hard pressed to vote for anyone over Downey Jr for Tropic Thunder. Ledger and Downey Jr are the only two I’ve seen in a long time where I forgot they were actors portraying a character.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:11 AM
The Oscar website says the announcements won’t be posted until tonight. This is gheyer than Bruce Pearl’s suits.
/Miz burn
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:11 AM
Downey was great in Tropic Thunder. glad to see he got a nomination, Ledger will win that category though
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:12 AM
Dr J get-up?
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:12 AM
i forgot he was a white a couple times as well, hes really good in that movie.
When you wrote “I love the Pussy” were you thinking of danglin’ your dice on Lance’s forehead?
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:12 AM
13 nominations for Button. I haven’t met one person that thought that movie was good or was just a poor man’s Forrest Gump.
/Haven’t seen it.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:13 AM
Its oscars.org
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:14 AM
try again, ill.
/fixed
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:17 AM
@irish – his jersey and some shorty-shorts = Dr. J get-up.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:17 AM
“The dingo ate your baby”
“that’s a true story”
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:17 AM
Its’ sensibility is quite a bit darker than Forrest Gump (I know, Fincher darker than Zemeckis!), but the crux and structure of each stories are markedly similar. I love Eric Roth, but they probably should’ve had a different screenwriter adapt F. Scott’s short story. I thought it was good, especially the look and technical aspects of it. It just didn’t really resonate in the way you’d imagine it would. And there’s a sudden shift about halfway through where they bone for about five straight on-screen minutes and then it’s back to normal. Not quite Eric Bana sweat sex in Munich, but close.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:20 AM
i dont read the script, script reads me
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:20 AM
anyone who has seen “milk”, is it as good as advertised? i heard a lot about it on a s.f. radio station, but living in bible beater arkansas they won’t show a movie around here that centers on a gay guy. i’ve heard nothing but good reviews, but i’ll have to wait until dvd.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:23 AM
I liked Milk a lot, Sean Penn and James Brolin are great in it. You can find it on the internets if you would like to see it sooner.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:23 AM
what a travesty – no gran torino for best pic
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7842438.stm
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:25 AM
A paint-by-the numbers race baiter with horrid performances, shoddy dialogue and an ending you can see coming the moment the credits end. Real travesty.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:38 AM
I can’t think of something less interesting than the Oscars.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:42 AM
if Howard does do anything related to Superman at the dunk contest, can Kenny Smith get the song right?
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:44 AM
how ’bout Lost, fetch? I find that FAR less interesting than the Oscars.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:45 AM
mize- I’ve never seen an episode so I can’t judge. I might love it, who knows. I have tried to get into the Oscars though and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 AM
i feel like the kid who didnt do the reading the night before class discussion.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:49 AM
All Oscar nods are up at oscar.com. You can print a copy if you wish.
And I’m starting to get tired of Artie, especially after he went on the offensive with Dr. Drew. I would love to read the Rolling Stone article to get some insight. I do refuse to buy his book, however, as I do not want to support his habit.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:50 AM
The Browns were able to downsize the front office because they have ManKok that can fill the holes
/I’m here all week
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:50 AM
fetch – I never got into Lost. I can talk movies though. Oscars talk at least encompasses multiple movies as opposed to talking about episodes of one show. I’ve spent the approx. 4 cumulative hours to watch Tropic Thunder and Frost/Nixon and don’t care a bit about having to sit through 150 hours of some intentional mind-warp of a tv show.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:51 AM
+1 sponge
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:53 AM
Yes i agree, the problem I have is that I’ve only listened to the show with Artie so when I listen and hes not there i feel like the show has a huge gap in it. Fuckin heroin man, terrible stuff.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:57 AM
That Oscar list is disappointing. Almost as much so as TENN’s sports…
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:58 AM
you’re preachin’ to the choir, ill.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:11 AM
Sponge, I loved Jackie the Joke Man on Stern (old timers will tell you Billy West was the best), and finally did warm up to Artie, but he is wearing out his welcome with me.
And miz, I’m with you, I’d rather invest 2 hours in a movie than untold hours on a TV show, for the most part.
And I also agree, the Oscar list was a little shaky this year. I’ll still make the rounds to catch as many of the nominated films as possible, though.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:16 AM
that is starting to be the case with a lot of people i know. Who would take his spot if Artie had to leave (or died)?
I dont think the Oscar’s list is that weak. Frost/Nixon, Milk, Benjamin Button, and Slumdog are all very good. Some people are upset that Doubt and Gran Torino didn’t make the cut but that will happen every year. Chris Nolan should have been at least nominated for The Dark Knight for Best Director.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:17 AM
GYD: Good call on Billy West! He was the man. I listened to him when I lived in Boston & he was on BCN & “The Big Mattress”
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:22 AM
I’ve watched The Dark Knight a few times since it came out on DVD and each time I am less and less impressed. Ledger is still awesome, but the performances by Eckhart and Gyllenhall make it a borderline good movie at best.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:24 AM
Mole – Think your boys will dominate MD on Sat? Or will the less-talented Terps continue to cause trouble in Cameron?
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Duke should win, but I don’t know what to think of Maryland, they’re so streaky. I would not be shocked if they pull the upset.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:32 AM
I agree that they should, but MD would have to shoot near 50% to have chance because of the size dif. Duke will out rebound MD easily.
January 22nd, 2009 at 12:49 PM
As an old school Stern fan, I could easily do without Artie. Too much of the show is now devoted to his antics, no matter if they are a work or a shoot.
January 22nd, 2009 at 2:55 PM
You know what never gets old…Howard and company riffing as Ted Kennedy. I could listen to that all day long.
