Cement in the Boxing Gloves is a Good Reason to Get Suspended
1-liner, Boxing January 29th. 2009, 8:45amBoxing: Antonio Margarito, who lost to Shane Mosley Saturday night, is being investigated for a foreign substance that was found under his hand wraps. It may have been concrete. “When the tape was unwrapped, Richardson pointed out two pads inside one of the hand wraps that appeared wet and laced with “flecks” of a substance that appeared to be like ‘Plaster of Paris,’ Mosley’s attorney Judd Burstein said Saturday night. Mosley’s promoter, Richard Schaefer, saw a cellphone photo of the stained wraps and said the substance appeared ‘gray,’ like ‘concrete.’” (LA Times)

Well, Mosley’s trainer spotted it before the bout, so he had his hands wrapped normally for the fight. But the real question is did he do this for the Cotto fight and will they investigate that? Because that’s Margarito’s signature win and shook up the welterweight division pretty significantly. It’d also make the likely Cotto-Mosley rematch easier to sell.

The stuff wasn’t found until Mosley’s trainer asked to feel Margarito’s wrapped hands. A good question is how the officials from the California State Athletic Commission, who supervise the hand-wrapping, missed this. And that means other commissions could easily have missed this in the past, too.
