Bill Simmons vs. ESPN … Never Gets Old
Bill Simmons, ESPN February 2nd. 2009, 1:45pm
We hear Bill Simmons chats are wildly popular, but we’ve only read one. It was the time he mentioned us following the Jason Whitlock incident, and our traffic quickly spiked, and we wondered where the heck it was coming from. But if he’s going get in these little digs at the company he works for, then we probably should start paying closer attention to them:
Kevin (Chappaqua, NY): Bill, with the Mike and the Maddog show no longer on the airways and the classic radio 1, 2 combo having gone their separate ways, What do you think there interactions will be at their first Super Bowl apart? I’m sure they will be fighting for guests, giving evil snickers and stares across radio row, while Mike sips on his Diet Coke and Dog fidgets uncontrollably in his chair. My question though is if you were asked to go on both shows and only had time for one, who you going with?
Bill Simmons: I would go on Mike’s show. There’s a 85% chance that Dog has never read a single thing I’ve written. Mike and I have a love-hate relationship (mostly love) but at least he reads me… the last time I was on, they grabbed me on Media Row and I was sick… I want a second chance… sadly it can never happen because I am not allowed to go on non-ESPN shows … even though the show that goes against Mike’s (Michael Kay) has never asked me to come on. Yup, this is my company.
Say what you will about Simmons … but we always find these type of barbs enjoyable.

Love the part where someone compares him to Lebron, looks like he will be a free agent in 2010 as well… I cant wait to see where he goes after ESPN.

Dont forget this dig:

How many people here does this apply to?
February 2nd, 2009 at 1:57 PM
Simmons sneaks these in all the time, any place he can, and I find them hilarious. I have to say I really enjoy his podcasts, even though listening to his nasally voice takes some getting used to. His mega-playoff podcasts with Aaron Schatz and Lombardi have been great and Simmons is getting better and better at deferring to them when it comes to breaking down the games (Simmons: “What’s a 9 route?”). His Boston homerism can grate at times, but Simmons is one of the few people at ESPN who doesn’t seem like a robot programmed and told what to say.

That’s bullshit, though. He didn’t come up with that.
February 2nd, 2009 at 1:58 PM
He also said he hated his magazine editors intensely.

I’m not sure how many of the commenters here are middle-aged. I’m 25, but I do love Asian women. Well, moreso women with some Asian ethnicity to them. Kristin Kreuk is my personal favorite.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:01 PM
I’m not asian, but the pre-teen me had a crush on George Costanza. Does that count?

the mount rushmore thing has been around FOREVER, at least since the 1980s when i sat in 6th grade class with a buddy of mine and we did a list for college hoops players THAT year on mount rushmore.
i dont recall my exact team, but the big issue was glen rice. i thought he was a stud, but he didn’t make the AA first team.
my buddy (a huge terps and acc fan; we’re still boys) was adamant about having jr reid on rushmore.
i dont actually remember who we came up with, but i believe it was Ferry, Elliott, Pervis and Chris Jackson. but that’d mean we left off stacey king?

It should be interesting when Simmons’ contract is up – because like him or not, he commands such a dedicated and loyal readerbase. They’re going to have to pay him Reilly money or Page 2 will basically fall off a cliff. I think most would agree that Simmons should actually make more than Reilly.

When i was a youngster I used to crush on Fran Drescher. Being young was a weird time.

Holy Christ, has anyone else actually seen what showed up on TV’s in Tucson last night? My God, I can only imagine hosting a party where that suddenly popped up on screen..
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:08 PM
I thought she was Inuit?
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:09 PM
What if taking jabs at ESPN is just part of his schtick? It’s not like he’s doing anything that actually hurts them. Maybe they had a mutual agreement to let him take some occasional soft jabs so he doesn’t seem like just another yes man?

There was a Mt. Dunkmore t-shirt going around when I was in probably 3rd grade.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:11 PM
she has been looking absolutely fantastic this season.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:14 PM
From IMDB: Her father, Peter Kreuk, is of Dutch ancestry and her mother, Deanna Che, is of Chinese ancestry but born in Indonesia; both are landscape architects.
You can disregard the landscape architects portion if you like.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:17 PM
Kristin Kreuk is my personal favorite.
I thought she was Inuit?
No, Nick> She’s not that “Inuit you”

bsanders, i’m a L.A. and therefore quite offended by your last statement.
then again, never heard of this chick or her parents, so i could care less either way.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:21 PM
What if taking jabs at ESPN is just part of his schtick? The Ruckmaker
Winner!
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:21 PM
I meant no harm to landscape architects, just that it doesn’t really apply to where her ancestry is concerned. She needs to get off that show, though. I have low hopes for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. If Jessica Alba can be a movie star, I see no reason why Kristin Kreuk can’t be. I’ve seen Idle Hands and Into the Blue, Alba, I’m aware of what you’re bringing to the table.

I’m assuming this is NSFW, and is full of schlong?

I’m 25,
I’m often wondering ’bout the ages of everybody on here, I suspect I am older than most of the commenters.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:25 PM
bsanders, just kidding, hell, that is probably some good pub for L.A.’s anyways.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:25 PM
I think Alba was/is in movies because she’s insanely hot and uniquely beautiful. Kreuk, while also hot and pretty, isn’t on the scale where it can carry her in movies. Plus…Chun Li? really? That’s a career killer

“wwwhhhaaa… michael kay won’t let me on his show… wwwwhhhaaa… chris russo won’t read my “columns”… wwwhhhaaa… my employer won’t let me on francesa’s show… wwwhhhaaa… i want a second chance… WWWHHHAAA!!!!
friggin’ spoiled little girl.

/f’d the above up
I’m 25
I’m often wondering ’bout the ages of everybody on here, I suspect I am, at 38, older than most of the commenters on here.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:28 PM
what exactly does an L.A. do?
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:29 PM
I don’t know, I think they’re both uniquely beautiful. I just find it odd how some attractive actresses are earmarked for stardom while others are stuck in mostly b-movies and niche TV shows. Let’s face it, they’re both really hot, but neither of them is Amy Adams or some other incredibly gifted young actress.

Is this where we start talking about kidney stones again?

some sidebar espn bashing: one the .com front page top stories is “Obama’s pick wins” – as in he picked the steelers and he won.

You and me both, KC.

/shutters at the thought of rocks in my urethra.
Shouldn’t there be a cure for this by now? If I were a doctor I would spend all my research time trying to fix this so I never have to face it. Or I would be a dickhole and have a tv show. Toss up really.
February 2nd, 2009 at 2:51 PM
would you expect anything less? If Obama wants a team to win, by God the refs will find a way.

The interesting part of that chat for me was when Simmons decided that he was a celebrity and was ranking himself on the chart of celebrity fans of the LA Clippers. If I remember right he ended up something along the lines of sixth.
February 2nd, 2009 at 3:08 PM
sponge, i work at a civil engineering firm right now, basically because of lack of job opportunities around here. L.A.s do a lot of land/park planning, conservation and residential design, among other things.
February 2nd, 2009 at 3:29 PM
Did anybody see the last sentence in his answer to this question as well??
Thought that was interesting.

“The interesting part of that chat for me was when Simmons decided that he was a celebrity and was ranking himself on the chart of celebrity fans of the LA Clippers. If I remember right he ended up something along the lines of sixth.”
This was more a dig at the Clippers than him thinking of himself as an actual celebrity… and frankly, in terms of Clippers fans you’ve heard of, I agree with his rankings.
February 2nd, 2009 at 4:03 PM
Simmons can still suck it… what a tool.
February 2nd, 2009 at 7:13 PM
Kidney stones not just for geezersz.
I got my first one sometime senior year in undergrad.
