Arshavin Finally Transferred: Andrei Arshavin wanted to escape the formidable Russian winter, so much so that he put up $10 million of Arsenal’s total $24 million fee to spring him from St. Petersburg. English clubs were granted a deadline extension due to the snow, allowing the clubs to consummate the deal. The 27-year-old’s neither a husky ball-winner in midfield nor a top-class defender, but he could be just the thing Arsenal need to stay in the Champions League.

Keane Revisited: Just half a year after completing his dream move to Liverpool, striker Robbie Keane returned to his previous club Tottenham in a $23 million transfer. Rafa Benitez asserted his wisdom for selling Keane. Though, of course, he declined to mention how he signed Keane in the first place, a mistake costing Liverpool at least $5.75 million, and how he dawdled so long on the resale that Liverpool could not use the money to buy a replacement.

Quaresma Bound for England: Chelsea manager Phil Scolari flexed his extensive scouting prowess, signing yet another of his former Portuguese internationals, Ricardo Quaresma, on loan from Inter Milan. Quaresma could not start consistently under Mourinho,, but if revived by his former manager, he could suitably replace Joe Cole on the wing. Unfortunately for Chelsea, Quaresma solves neither their inane, Essien-less circle jerk in central midfield nor their duel of brooding egos on the front-line.

Mediocre Manchester City: Manchester City spent nearly $75 million this January, to avoid relegation, but is hardly guaranteed to do so. The club shot for the stars, but hit the ground hard with expensive, uninspiring pickups, such as Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bridge. Man City got most of the gang together last Saturday and lost 1-0 to a dense Stoke City side down to ten men. They are in 10th place, but just five points separates them from relegation.
