UFC Fight Night Preview
UFC February 6th. 2009, 5:00pm
MMA fans finally get a financial break this weekend. After 3 straight weeks of Pay-Per-View action (Affliction’s second show was sandwiched between UFC 93 and 94), the UFC is giving back to the televised-violence-loving community with UFC Fight Night: Lauzon vs. Stephens. While the free show on SpikeTV doesn’t have any huge names to promote, the UFC hopes that tomorrow’s event will showcase some of the stars of the future of the sport.
One of those future stars is headliner Joe Lauzon. In 21 career fights, Lauzon has never been to a decision. He’s 4-1 inside the octagon and his one loss came against the man who will next fight for the lightweight title, Kenny Florian. Lauzon will be fighting Jeremy Stephens who just recently stepped in to take the place of an injured Hermes Franca. Stephens is another rising name in the 155-pound division. When we last saw him, he survived against and eventually knocked out Rafael do Anjos with a devastating uppercut. (Full fight video here)
The lone heavyweight bout on the card is undefeated Cain Velasquez versus UFC-newcomer, Denis Stojnić. Let me tell you that you haven’t seen Cain Velasquez fight until you’ve watched him repeatedly bounce a guy’s head off the canvas at eye-level. As for Stojnić, what else can be said about a Bosnian kickboxer whose nickname is “The Menace?”
Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer and Luigi Fioravanti vs. Anthony Johnson will round out the scheduled televised portion of the card. Johnson has some serious knockout power and is the guy I’m most looking forward to seeing. Hopefully, it’s an exciting night and UFC fans get more than the scheduled 4 fights.
The action starts at 9pm Eastern and will air on SpikeTV.
PRELIMINARY CARD (Un-televised)
- Rob Emerson vs. Kurt Pellegrino
- Dan Miller vs. Jake Rosholt
- Matt Grice vs. Matt Veach
- Rich Clementi vs. Gleison Tibau
- Nick Catone vs. Derek Downey
- Steve Bruno vs. Matthew Riddle

Haven’t we had enough pictures of Michael Phelps on TBL this week?

Just asking, but why do we get a weekly MMA post and not a weekly NHL post?

RS
- Fair question. I also think that if there’s a daily soccer post, there should definitely be a daily NFL offseason post. Call it The Pig Sack.

No offense to Ty Duffy, but the soccer posts average about 10 comments. If yo’re looking for filler material I don’t understand where the NHL posts are. At least with CRM’s MMA stuff it’s weekly so I understand covering it since it’s growing in America.

Should be a good night of fights. I know both Stephens and Lauzon, so it’s hard to pick who to pull for. I think Lauzon will end up winning, but you never know.

[...] SpikeTV. I won’t be live-blogging because I don’t get paid enough for that. (I did do a short preview on TBL.) Saturday nights with the UFC are my escape from reality. It’s an excuse to get away from [...]
