Mad Scientist About to Go on the Market?
College Basketball, College Football, NBA February 17th. 2009, 6:50pm
Boy did Mike Leach botch his coaching negotiations with Texas Tech. After his QB graduated and his star WR opted for the NFL, the Mad Scientist let the Red Raiders drag him out in the negotiations … while all the other coaching vacancies were filled. Today he let the deadline pass on accepting a 5-year, $12.7 million deal, leaving his future with the program in limbo. The leverage is gone, but there’s always room for you in Bristol.
The NBA returns tonight, with the most interesting matchup being the Hornets visiting the Thunder. Interesting because the Hornets just traded Tyson Chandler to the Thunder, and also because OKC unveils a new mascot tonight: a Bison. Go figure. It’s also an extra night off for injured Chris Bosh and Toronto, meaning more time to Twitter.
Slow night in college hoops, even with Michigan State’s trip to Purdue. A Spartans triumph all but secures the Big 10 title for Izzo, and keeps hope alive for perhaps a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tourney.
Get to bed early, kids – NFL combine begins tomorrow, and hopefully, the NFL Network will televise it all. We’re so very eager to watch Knowshon Moreno run a 4.5 40 and then have LeSean McCoy beat him by a two-tenths of a second and rocket up the draft boards.

Can’t wait, love watching freakish athletes in action. I don’t think Moreno drops below McCoy, though. But with the Lions restructuring Culpepper today I think it’s safe to say Stafford will have to be some other team’s first-round bust.

I love it when young people have goals in life….
from the article regarding the UF Gator who was arrested yesterday:
In the relationship, Johnson would claim to be “play fighting†when “he would shake me, bite me and hit me,†the petition states.
Johnson claimed that a goal in life was to “shoot and kill someone,†the petition states. When the petitioner told Johnson’s family of the physical behavior and Johnson found out, the petition states, he informed her of his plans to “go upstairs and get his gun.€ When she told him he could go to jail, he said “I don’t care…at least it would be for something good,†the petition states.

Culpepper’s deal is still for only one season. Stafford probably remains the favorite to go #1.
What will be more interesting is to see what DET does w/ Orlovsky — if they give him a long-term deal, then maybe they’ve already decided to pass on Stafford.
I think he’ll suck, too. But then again, I thought the same thing about Matt Ryan this time last year.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:10 PM
I still stick to Stafford is going to be a really good pro and Mark Sanchez is going to be all kinds of awful. I have no facts to back this up with except that Sanchez is supremely overrated considering the way he played this year outside of the two games against Big Ten teams.
I took Clemson giving the 10.5 tonight home to Maryland. I fully expect the annual Oilver Purnell February stinkbomb.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:20 PM
Well, if the Lions draft Stafford that means they’ll have to part ways with Orlovsky, Kitna and Drew Stanton, as none of them will be part of their future plans. I suppose it’s possible Stanton just sucks, but how do the Lions really know? They can’t possibly finish 0-16 again, but they’ll likely suck this year no matter who they draft, so why not wait another year when the QB prospects grade out a little higher? I just can’t see the benefit to paying top pick money to a rookie QB who no one really knows for sure how he’ll transition to the NFL.
All I know is, a career completion percentage less than 60%, sloppy decision making, and few marquee college wins would make me hesitate – big time. Even if you draft a left tackle #1 who turns out to not be what you thought, you can still slide him either inside or over to right tackle. If Stafford’s a bust, you’ve dealt your franchise a crushing blow, both morale and salary cap-wise. I know the Lions are desperate for a “face of the franchise” player, but I think Megatron is a pretty good substitute for that in place of a QB.

I fired MD +10.5 and Mich St -2.
Tonight will be the test to see if Gary has the kids ready to play.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:28 PM
I just don’t think Maryland is very good. Turnover Vasquez is going to have an awesome time trying to break that Tiger press. And MSU looks terrible right now. What the hell are they doing out there? I was about to go with them too, glad I didn’t as of now. Long way to go however.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:29 PM
And the fact that I laid 10.5 with a team that lost to Virginia makes me ill.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:33 PM
rs – I agree about MD. They aren’t good at all. Booker should have a field day. I fired MD with the hopes that Gary is on top of his game tonight.
Mich St looks bad, but they are owning the boards and Purdue was shooting well to start. Things will turn for Mich St shortly.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:35 PM
And Dicky V sounds like he just let JJ Reddick blow in his mouth.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:44 PM
ill
I noticed that too. Didnt he have throat cancer or something? Hope everyhing is ok
February 17th, 2009 at 7:44 PM
Loved that entry pass by Clemson
February 17th, 2009 at 7:50 PM
Clemson is already over the limit 8 minutes in. Well that’s just awesome.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:51 PM
blazer – Not to be a complete asshole but if he did/does, I’m sure the doctors at Duke would treat him for no charge.
February 17th, 2009 at 7:52 PM
haha, funny shit. Im sure they would
February 17th, 2009 at 7:56 PM
rs, I think you’re safe…it’s clear that Clemson is much, much better, so as soon as the refs stop calling every ticky tack foul on Clemson, they’ll just kill maryland.
February 17th, 2009 at 8:01 PM
Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland PD says that while Cavs trade is unlikely, there are still talks going on for Camby or Antawn Jamison…
February 17th, 2009 at 8:09 PM
I would love to see Jamison leave the Wizards so that they will be able to afford signing their lottery pick. I really love watching Jamison play, but a white female mannequin from the Baby Gap would play better defense in the NBA.

Michigan State is getting worked by Purdue.
February 17th, 2009 at 8:30 PM
We’re going to see some crazy stuff in the NCAA tourney. If MSU and Memphis are 2 or 3seeds then this tourney is wide open. I group Louisville in that category too.
I’ll make one bold prediction. A 15 will beat a 2 this year.

My Boilers always seem to lose TV games. Give ‘em time

All day and ZERO mention of Michael Jordan turning 46?
February 17th, 2009 at 8:58 PM
Mike Leach is awesome. I went with my fellow coaching staff to Texas Tech for a coaching seminar with his staff and he spent almost 4 hours just talking about his Air Raid schemes. This was before the seminar began, just in a coffee house near campus. The guy is a genius when it comes to passing.
February 17th, 2009 at 9:06 PM
Well, at least Maryland will get more than 45 points this time, but Clemson is pouring it on.
Can Gary survive another massive blowout, with his next 3 games being UNC, Duke and Wake?
February 17th, 2009 at 9:11 PM
They get Duke at home though, and now’s the time to be playing Duke.
February 17th, 2009 at 9:12 PM
It’s Jim Brown’s birthday, too. What do you want, a happy birthday to black athletic icons post?
I mean shit, they already have their own month.

yelnik
- You a high school coach somewhere in Texas?
February 17th, 2009 at 9:18 PM
Excuse me, they play Wake after State…though to be honest, state’s been rather feisty recently (actually have a 2 game ACC winning streak). Also, Maryland will be pumped up for Duke, but they’re ill equipped to do anything about it.
February 17th, 2009 at 9:24 PM
What did Mike Leach ever win besides a Holiday Bowl and a game against Texas?
February 17th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
No Jeannine Edwards/Gillespie halftime interview?
Weak Espn. Better be one halftime.

February 17th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Can definitely relate, a few days after I got shot I remember seeing the shoes I was wearing that night for the first time, still streaked with blood. Pretty god damn sobering. Hope this guy can get his career back on track.
February 17th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
hows his leverage gone? leach has won for years in a big time conf with second rate talent. hes churned out harrel type passers yr after yr and hasn’t needed crabtree types to win 9-10 games a yr.
leverage? how would a team based in lubbock do without him?
February 17th, 2009 at 10:23 PM
nothin like seeing michael scott fumble the stripper.
his horses are gone. the lines are going to be decimated. there are no openings (i believe). it’s either take it or leave it. if you leave it, he goes without a job for a year, unless he wants to be an NFL assistant or perhaps a college assistant.
