Oscars: Best Picture
1-liner, Movies February 20th. 2009, 1:30pmOscars: The award for Best Picture has got to go to Slumdog Millionaire. Benjamin Buttons is a contender, but there’s no way Slumdog doesn’t bring it home. Two out of the last three Best Picture movies have been classics – Crash and Departed – and we’re eager for the other one, No Country, to come on HBO so we can watch the first 45 minutes and then turn it off. This year is poised to become the most boring Academy Awards of all time, and that’s really saying something.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Crash? A classic? Egad. I think the prevailing opinion is that it’s the worst Oscar winner since Kramer vs. Kramer (although Shakespeare In Love might be involved in that conversation as well.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Crash was meh. Departed is a classic. No Country was one of the best 1st half movies ever…
Still haven’t seen Slumdog. Not terribly interested until it comes on PPV… Little to no interest in Ben Button.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
anyone that thinks Crash is a classic shouldn’t be discussing movies.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Neither of those are classics
February 20th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Crash? Bad movie. Ugh, we’ve been through this before. No sense in rehashing.
I have really no interest in Slumdog. I am obviously missing something. Anyone here see it?
February 20th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
of non- comedy movies, i’d agree.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
I saw it. I’m not a huge movie guy, but I fucking loved it. Watch it online sometime this weekend.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Crash?
February 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
The ending to Slumdog might be worse than No Country. A little over the top in cheesiness (last 15 seconds). Good movie, not great.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
zero interest in it also. Sorry. The fact that Gran Torino got shut out guaranteed that I will not be watching th Oscars. Typical liberal Hollywood crap.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Were you pulling hard for An American Carol this year?
And agreed on Crash being the worst winner…after the first twenty minutes I was thinking “We get it, everyone’s racist”
February 20th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I like No Country better than Crash and Departed, probably the only one though.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I’ll continue to pile-on and say Crash was far from a classic. I don’t even think it was worthy of a nomination.
I liked the Departed, though Scorcese still doens’t know how to end a movie.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
“We get it, everyone’s racistâ€
Exactly. It treated it’s audience as imbeciles.
I’m with you Sponge. I’m a sucker for Coen Bros. (not including Burn).

The year Crash won was a rough year for movies apparently.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Michael Bay is the shit.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
I think its already been said here.
The fact that you think Crash is a classic, well..
that seems about right, I guess.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
i loved the ending to No Country. Tommy Lee Jones realizing that no matter what he did, he could never win. Awesome.
Crash was horrible.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
One more to pile on Crash. That movie was not worth a nomination though that year’s crop of movies was pretty weak too.
I personally liked the Wrestler better than Slumdog.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Might want to stay away from The Ladykillers, probably the worst movie of all time.
February 20th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
why can’t Hoosiers and Breaking Away just be nominated every year…
/Bloomington’d
February 20th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
NSR, I really liked Munich.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I’ll pile on and say No Country sucked. Tommy Lee Jones hasnt been the same since Men in Black
February 20th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Crash was great. I cried when the Hispanic locksmith thought his daughter was shot.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
I’m reserving judgment on No Country until further viewings. The narrative shift certainly bothered me, but I wonder if I’ll react differently after a second time.
Munich was pretty good, but not Best Picture worthy.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Crash and Slumdog are both huge fans of the slow motion, dramatic hug.

Pootie Tang. Classic.

I’m not so sure about that. Two of the other nominess, Good Night and Good Luck & Munich were both very good movies. And I thought the best film of the year wasn’t even nominated : A History of Violence. I also thought Syriana & The Squid and the Whale were quite good as well. They all certainly blew away Crash.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
You boys like Meeeeexxiiicccoooo?
February 20th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Jay, we’re going to have to let you go. Your inability to detect really obvious sarcasm makes you a liability. Clown will tell you about your severance package.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Good Night and Good Luck should have won that year.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
A History of Violence.
Loved the first half of that movie. Not that the second half was bad, but that was a solid first half.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Um….no.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Most awkward sex scenes in movie history. And I’ve seen Rex’s private stash.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
@JayV,
Good Night & Good Luck was decent enough, but ultimately forgettable. I already chimed in on Munich. I really, really wanted to like A History of Violence more than I actually did. It just kind of fell apart after Ed Harris’ character was done in. Though William Hurt was great in his small part.

i thought i smelled shit

No Country was a let down for me. The book was by far one of the best i’ve ever read.
Sir Spicious, you read the book?
February 20th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
haven’t read the book. the only mccarthy i’ve read is the road. super depressing, really got to me. i’m excited to see the movie, but also sad, since the book is unbelievably bleak, and filmed in my native pittsburgh.
February 20th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
No Country won’t be coming to HBO any time soon (it first aired on Starz months ago).
February 20th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Crash is the worst Oscar best picture in the last four decades. The Departed wasn’t nearly the movie Goodfellas was and doesn’t deserve the free Thai massages – clearing it this was a Scorsese make-up-call.
It’s going to be Slumdog
February 20th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Crash a classic? WTF? A classically overrated movie for simpletons.
February 20th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Did anyone else feel a thrill when Brendan Fraiser’s bitch wife fell down the steps in that movie?
I love the Departed, but I don’t think it’s a GREAT movie. I’ll watch it all the time, but it’s over the top and unintentionally funny. That being said, I don’t like Goodfellas either.
Seeing Slumdog tomorrow. I’ve heard wildly differing opinions about it. I’m guessing I’ll dislike it, but we’ll see.
February 20th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Saw Slumdog a few weeks ago. I thought it was good but not great. Dev Patel–even though he is being tortured by police and going through a game where he could lose millions of dollars with each answer–never really shows much emotional range. The child actors who play the character as a kid are very good though.
I really liked the game show host (don’t know his name but apparently he’s a veteran Bollywood actor). I thought, even with his somewhat limited material, he was much better than anyone else in the movie.
February 20th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Well, it appears you all have the Crash backlash covered. I also didn’t care for it. Better than Gran Shito, though. [Racist Growl, Dialogue Written by Child, Racist Growl]
Loved the ending, though. I wish Clint Eastwood **** in every one of his movies.

There Will Be Blood > Every Other Movie Mentioned So Far
February 20th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Brokeback Mountain should have won Best Picture the year Crash won it, Crash just hasn’t held up. As for this year, the best movie is by far “Waltz with Bashir”, not even close. Buttons was a huge letdown, Slumdog was good but not great and the guy who thinks “Gran Torino” got robbed should just stop watching movies all together.
