realtor steered the people toward chase. realtor should have checked to see if the family qualified (they didn’t). blame is to be shared here, but the realtor gets some of that. what is 3% of $1.5 million? That’s the cut the realtor took from that deal.

Chase has the skin in the game on that loan, though. The realtor does not. Back when banks made loans based on common sense, Chase would have said NO CHANCE on that loan and told the realtor to guide the couple towards a starter home. In today’s bizarro finance world, where compensation is based solely on the short term, the mortgage broker got the loan pushed through and made his massive compensation (and thusly got the realtor paid as well). The real breakdown from the bank’s perspective came when the underwriters got in bed with the origination side of banks. The UW’s are supposed to be the credit check to make sure that the bank isn’t making a bad loan. That stopped happening in most banks about 7-8 years ago when the money got to be too great.

Sure, the realtor should feel some guilt about the process, but it isn’t their job to ask where they got the money to qualify… I don’t particularly care for realtors, but they are worthless in a situation like this if the bank does their job and turns down the loan.

At least the hot dog vendor has a hot, big-titted wife to console him.
