Tiger’s Return
Golf, Race, Sharks February 25th. 2009, 12:00pm
Tiger: He tees off at 12:02 (Arizona time!) against a gentleman named Brendan Jones of Australia. If you are fortunate enough to have the golf channel, kindly keep everyone updated in the comments section. If you’re looking for reading material while Tiger steps to the tee, we humbly recommend this shark article, or perhaps this lengthy piece from ESPN titled “Ghosts of Mississippi.” (Arizona Republic)

February 25th, 2009 at 12:06 PM
Golf channel at 2:02…god I can’t wait. Never before has a sport needed one athlete more than golf needs Tiger.

Tiger returning and MLB Network airing their first spring training game this afternoon…+1 unemployment

February 25th, 2009 at 12:22 PM
you mean arizona time is different from east coast time?
February 25th, 2009 at 12:22 PM
this is both true and false…no one man is bigger than the game, but tim finchem put everything in tiger’s basket, like a fucking moron.
seriously, fuck tim finchem and fuck the tiger overload.
February 25th, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Just trying to help. Not that I give a shit about Tiger – I just want Sergio to miserably fail.
February 25th, 2009 at 12:28 PM
YOU BASTARD!!!
February 25th, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Spence -
How did Finchem put everything in the Tiger basket? Sponsors want Tiger, because he is recongizable, a good spokesperson, a good role model, etc… Fans that didn’t follow golf before follow Tiger. They did the same, at a lesser pace for Daly too. Tiger, almost single-handedly, has raised purses by 100% or more in the last 10 years.
Hell, even my fantasy golf league is Tiger-less, because whoever had the 1st pick would win every year, just because of Eldrick.
It IS a big deal. Whether Sergio or Phil or Ernie or others play or don’t play per week is not mainstream news-worthy. They COULD win when they play. When Tiger plays, he is almost even odds against the field. That is substantial…
And, Sergio wishes he was Cal Ripken Jr…
February 25th, 2009 at 12:55 PM
look at PGA advertising, marketing and coverage…it’s all about tiger and nobody else matters. from an advertiser or casual fan’s point of view, that’s fine, but if you’re responsible for growing the game of golf, promoting one guy at the expense of all the others is doing a disservice to the game.
why finchem got rid of the rule that requires a pro, in order to keep his card, to play in an event at least once every five years is beyond me. and until that rule comes back into play, the game will always be about the player, rather than the competition. how are these mid-level events, with tiger-sized purses, supposed to survive if the Tour does nothing to promote players outside of one guy?
golf is doomed to become tennis, where there are four events per year that matter, and the rest of the season is ignored, and a lot of that lies at the commissioner’s feet when he’s too weak to stand up to players and let them know that professional golf isn’t about the golfers or the money or the sponsorships, it’s about the game.
it was the same way with MJ and the NBA in terms of promotion…look what happened after he left, arguably the worst period in the NBA’s history was that 10 year stretch from 96-2006. the NBA made it through but golf doesn’t have that luxury.
/i can’t type my thoughts clearly today…excuse me if that made no sense.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:04 PM
are there a lot of players who take 5 years off at a time?
/not being a dick, sincerely confused
February 25th, 2009 at 1:15 PM
yea, i worded that poorly.
the rule was that a pro had to play in EACH event on the calendar at least once every 5 years. this allowed people to see the game’s best players across the country and not just in so-cal, florida, akron, dubai and wherever the majors are held that year.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:22 PM
oh ok, that seems quite reasonable theres what, 30-40 tourney’s each year? so they’d only need to play in 5 or 6 other tourney’s besides the majors and the few other big ones.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:26 PM
It’s hard to argue with you Spence, as you know far more than I do about golf and the PGA tour. But it seems to me that golf is going through a Tiger bubble, and yes it will eventually pop. But is that not better than not going through a Tiger bubble at all? You can promote these other guys all you want, but it doesn’t mean people are going to buy it. It also doesn’t help that the two guys nipping at his heels are not very likeable. Both are perceived as soft cry babies, which falls in line with the publics perception of most golfers.
I think your tennis analogy is spot on. The two sports are very similar in appeal. I don’t think golf can be a major player all year long. They should be happy with 4 big time weekends and maybe 2 or 3 other solid weekends.
As for the NBA, I think their drop off happened not because they spent too much time promoting Jordan, but because there wasn’t a likeable player to take his spot. AI definitely didn’t resonate well with Joe “white” Public. Kobe is a biatch. Shaq didn’t give his heart to the game like Jordan did. Only when guys like Lebron and D-Wade came around did the NBA pull out of it. Great players with charisma and a burning passion for the game.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:28 PM
right, but where it messes things up is that tiger only plays the buick at torrey pines, the three WGC events, arnold palmer and jack’s events, the wachovia, the players, and the FedEx Cup events, in addition to the four majors. same thing EVERY year.
tiger knows he moves the needle…he should try and play in other places, but won’t because he doesn’t have to. and it’s a shame because those other events are dying off rapidly.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:35 PM
that strikes true…for as great of players as phil and vijay are, they’re not charismatic (well, phil is, but he crossed into douche territory). personally, i find sergio to be entertaining as hell, and AK and camillo villegas have some appeal as well. there are entertaining young stars coming up.
the end of the 2008 golf season, as well as the ryder cup, was riveting and dramatic. but when all your promotional resources go towards one dude, what are you going to do then?
im just concerned for the state of my favorite sport…the future doesn’t look good, even with tiger.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:37 PM
Derrick Brooks was just released
February 25th, 2009 at 1:39 PM
Spence wishes Tiger had impregnated him instead of that Swedish bitch.
/true story
February 25th, 2009 at 1:44 PM
I agree on that point no doubt. Maybe not make it a strict have to play every single one rule, but it is lame he get to play the same 5 events outside the majors every single year. The commish should stand up to him on this issue because ultimately he has the hammer. It would be worse for Tiger to lose golf than for golf to lose Tiger.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:44 PM
Hey Irish, thanks for the heads up. Dunn, Galloway, Hilliard and June.
February 25th, 2009 at 1:55 PM
207 on comcast is the golf channel
February 25th, 2009 at 1:59 PM
too late…tiger, and arguably the rest of the top 25 or so, already has too much juice and it’d be a trainwreck for the sport.
think about this…tiger already is disqualified for vesting in the PGA pension plan and if he didn’t have fully exempt status due to wins, he wouldn’t even have his PGA card.
but the easiest solution is this…allow PGA tourneys to offer appearance fees. you want tiger? no problem, pony up the cash and he’ll show, no questions asked. why do you think the event in dubai has a major-esque field? easy, oil rich princes can throw gobs of cash at the players…put a cap on the amt you can offer, institute some rule where you have to appear at a pool of tourneys every 5 or so years and bingo…problem solved.

I didn’t realize that PGA tourny’s weren’t allowed to give appearance fees. Seems like a no brainer.

I doubt we will have to worry about that again.
February 25th, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Hey Andy, you don’t happen to go by redtide from time to time do you?
February 25th, 2009 at 4:01 PM
it’s absurd how he can control his spin out of the rough…that, and his putting, might be the most impressive parts of his game.
February 25th, 2009 at 4:01 PM
I don’t know what that is. What is it?
February 25th, 2009 at 4:03 PM
another perfect drive from Mr. Woods off the 9th tee

No, it’s a nickname a guy named Andy goes by, he is a big Chicago sports fan. I play in his fantasy football keeper league, seemed to be enough coincidence there to pose the question. I’m not sure why he goes by redtide.

February 25th, 2009 at 5:14 PM
Ok I get it. There is a beer called fat tire that everyone raves about here on the west coast (I believe it’s actually made in Colorado) but I’m not terribly fond of it, so I call it flat tire.
