A Month to the Draft, and ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay Are Already Worked into a Lather
NFL, Video February 26th. 2009, 6:45pmFrom this morning’s Sportscenter, one of the more heated NFL draft debates we’ve seen in quite some time.ESPN’s dynamic duo is debating the merits of Matthew Stafford’s golden arm, and it quickly devolves into:
McShay, 40-second mark: “That’s the most asinine argument you could ever have.”
Kiper, 1:06 mark: “That’s the most ridiculous argument I’ve ever heard.”
Kiper, 2:00 mark: “I think you’re nuts putting him 8th.”
We’re fairly percent certain that the little blip you you see around the :57 mark is ESPN editing out Kiper saying, “G– damn it.” That’s the only explanation because we’re 99.9 percent sure we heard it this morning. (Tirico Suave)

What would Mel Kiper do if there wasn’t a NFL draft? My god, I can’t believe this guy has carved out a long-term (and likely very profitable) career out of this shit.
February 26th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
is there a website that has mel’s picks with what actually happened to see how many he got right and how many he got wrong?

Same can be said for McShay. And Kiper’s not happy about the young snot-nosed punk coming into his turf, either. I really get the feeling these guys genuinely don’t like each other. This is how they sounded by the time of the draft last year. They ought to really be a treat after 6 more weeks of this.

Selling furniture.
“Is it the best couch available? No. But you don’t need a Hall of Fame couch to have an excellent viewing experience. You can build a living room around this couch.”
February 26th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Mel yelled louder, he wins. Elliott easily wins creepiest grin award.
February 26th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
I think Kiper would easily make the transition to some front office scouting job, or maybe a slick/greasy agent
February 26th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Or a used car salesman at a new jersey dealership.
McShay’s a douche.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
not much, he went to baltimore county community college.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
I believe someone looked into that once, and Kiper responded by saying (paraphrasing) “I’m not trying to list who the teams WILL select, rather who they SHOULD select”.
I always thought that was a slick response.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
Well played
February 26th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
He did do a radio commercial a few years back for an online “sports marketing” degree.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
If SNL were still alive, this would make for a great skit.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
@Al Czervik that is a slick response and it reminds me of something a used car salesman would say.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
@mrejr – couldn’t agree more. Just a classic “deflection” answer.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
good recap of mel’s stuff on wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Kiper_Jr.
he may have gone to a community college, but he was smart enough to start a business there and really become THE draftnik in all of football. impressive.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
Or TBL, here’s an even better one
February 26th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Only TBL would link to something that doesn’t exist
February 26th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Mel Kiper, Jr. > Mel Kiper Jr

Cassino- Whats the feel for tonight? Biggest game on the board tonight. I just don’t think ASU can score enough to beat Washington on the road.
February 26th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
The Ruckmaker – Tremendous.
This argument is the epitome of ESPN – yell louder. I’ve always enjoyed Kiper but he’s over the top here. McShay managed to produce that patented smarmy grin once again. He sucks. Didn’t a blog look over his mocks the last two years and McShay got like 20 total picks right? Hmm…lemme try to find it.
February 26th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
Think you meant Duder tremendous.
Anyone know the site with all the timed quizzes on #1 picks, colleges of pro players, etc?
February 26th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
You talking about sporcle? I kicked some ass at the Princess Bride quiz today.
February 26th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
if you go buy kiper’s wikipedia page the dude has been wronger than two boys kissing in a chicken wire boat whether he is telling us who the teams should pick or who the teams are going to pick. he is a douche of biblical proportions.
February 26th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Arizona State just doesn’t match up well against us. We have big bodies to throw at Pendergraph and long athletic guys who we can stick on Harden, and beyond those two guys ASU doesn’t have much. Behind their big 2, they are probably the least athletic team in the conference, whereas the Huskies are perhaps the most athletic team. Plus, UW’s 14-1 at Hec Ed this year, with the only loss being in 3OT. But there’s gonna be a lot of emotion what with the big stakes and all.
February 26th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
This is the funniest shit I have heard all week, I almost died I was laughing so hard.
February 26th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
2 min left in the first and your beloved LeBron team has 8 pioints. Way to be a MVP. Loser.
February 26th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Is this a record low, 19-11 after one?

Hey Mr. Springfield, about your comments in the SG hockey post:
SG is in fact attractive and has a great ass, a pure bred cougar if I’ve ever known one.
February 26th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
As someone who grew up in Central Illinois, I feel confident in saying that Springfield does, in fact, suck. But try throwing a rock in Wrigleyville without hitting a douchebag and you will fail. And I call BS on SG being attractive. But if she is, here’s my number 630-555-1258. Hit me up, girl!
February 26th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
I don’t know man, there is some beautiful country in central and southern Illinois. All those rolling hills do wonders.
February 26th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
i never said springfield is awesome it does in fact suck. all the tourism stuff is centered by this guy named lincoln. and that about all we have here. but i stand by my comments on sg. she said something about getting ready for a hockey game and yet here she is commenting on this site well over an hour after she said she was getting ready. she is probably getting ready to complain about why there isnt a in depth hockey post with half naked hockey players instead of a kiper/mcshay post.
February 26th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Went to spring break one year in Ft. Lauderdale and met 5 chicks from SIU. Since I’m a dude I would have banged all of them, but only 2 of them were attractive. So by my college math that means SG has a 40 percent chance of being attractive.
I like those odds.

rs – I like your logic. I took Cincy, Miami and Mich tonight. I don’t have to work tomorrow and plan on watching the AZ St/Wash game. Any thoughts? I’m thinking AZ St simply based on the majority being on Wash.
February 26th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
SG went to SIU? Oh, then the odds may be less than 40%. I spent my first two years in Carbondale and even if a girl was hot when she came there, she wasn’t two months later. The weight gains are just amazing. ISU has much hotter girls, but Bloomington-Normal is the worst college town(s) in Illinois.
February 26th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Do you know what the term “sarcasm” means? I told you I was being sarcastic when I said I had to get ready to go pick up dudes at a hockey game. In other words I WAS JOKING.
February 26th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Whaaa? How did me making fun of a guy from Springfield turn into me attending SIU? I didn’t go to SIU.
February 26th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
There must be a sarcasm shield around Springfield.
February 26th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
UW has been excellent at covering the spread all year FWIW.

February 26th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Cassino – I’ve rolled with Washington a couple times this year and they’ve treated me well. 17-8 ATS is really solid, but those things usually have a way of evening out.

February 26th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Cleveland did not match up well with the Rockets. Not many teams do, but Houston still finds ways to lose regardless.

Bernard Berrian disapproves of it, that’s for sure.

February 26th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
Indeed he won’t. Gotta give it to Bielein. He’s done a good job considering he only has two legit players.
February 26th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
if Michigan is in than OSU has to be in. They’ve beat them twice.
February 26th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
@tallguy- it just keeps getting better, doesn’t it? And btw, Gabrielle Anwar is just smoking.
February 26th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Cursed- Did OSU beat Duke? NO. Shut up.
February 26th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Oh, and the day that Bill Polian tore Kiper a new one was one of the great live moments in TV, as far as I’m concerned.
February 26th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
I’m on Wahsington -3.5. Good night so far, had Cincy and Xavier.
February 26th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
Lots of teams didn’t beat Duke that may make the tournament! In fact, the NCAA removed ‘beating Duke’ as a qualification four years ago when they instituted the stupid new RPI that overvalues road losses.

Van Pelt told Buccigrass “I will punch you in the face”
February 26th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
The computers love them which show how messed up the computers are. They’ve only beaten one team in the top 8 of the league (Nova), They beat one good team out of conference (Ohio State) and thats it. The reason they have great numbers is that they have beaten up on the teams between 65 and 100 in the RPI. I think they get in on the weakness of the bubble, but if they stumble against USF or DePaul, Cincy is getting in ahead of them.
I don’t think they’re the lock everyone thinks they are.
February 27th, 2009 at 12:10 am
I think USC (assuming Cal’s 10 point lead holds) is now officially out.
February 27th, 2009 at 12:22 am
Solid game between UW and ASU. Winner is sitting pretty for the Pac 10 crown.
February 27th, 2009 at 12:25 am
UCLA in another dogfight against a bottom feeder PAC 10 team. Man their offense with a lead is the worst in the country. Running the shot clock down to 7 and having Collison go on on four is not the recipe for success.
Howland’s been doing this all year too.
February 27th, 2009 at 12:26 am
When will these coaches learn that a 7 second differential down 2, you should foul right away? I mean this is ridiculous.
So much for the Cal lead holding up..Tie game 2 minutes left.
February 27th, 2009 at 12:31 am
I think Howland has been doing a marvelous job with that UCLA team. They lost so much from last years team, getting back to the tournament is a successfull season for them this year.
February 27th, 2009 at 12:38 am
Getting back to the tournament is good for UCLA??!?! They returned arguably a top 5 point guard in the country and a 3 year starter at guard, combined with a top 10 recruiting class. Getting to a sweet 16 is successful, getting to the tournament is expected.
February 27th, 2009 at 12:55 am
Some great finishes in the PAc 10 tonight, UW/ASU tied with 2 min left, Stanford had a chance to tie under a minute to go, USC is going to get a shot to tie here in OT.
Great night.
