Guess the Sport
1-liner, Media Gossip/Musings March 3rd. 2009, 2:45pmStruggling: “What’s most troubling about this situation is that for the first time in the long history of North American professional sports, the majority of the teams in one league have no financial incentive to improve. Most will be better off financially if they do nothing, and in many cases, will fare even better if they make personnel moves that are certain to make them worse.” What sport is this? Did anyone read Simmons’ piece on the NBA and it’s financial issues? He says the MLB and NHL (obviously) are in even worse shape.

NFL?

That was a good article. Sounds like the worst is yet to come for the NBA.

Simmons piece was very good, I’m surprised TBL hasn’t linked to it considering it was a mashup of gloom and doom that he loves so much. The WSJ article was of the ummm, duh, variety. It was odd how the author kept putting Mr everywhere. Mr Billups, Mr James.

NBA commissioner David Stern insists the league is still enjoying one of its most competitive seasons. He says he’s encouraged by the addition of the Orlando Magic to the NBA’s group of elite teams
yeah buddy

what did everyone think of jimmy fallon last night?
it reminded me of a bad snl episode in a talk show setting. but you did really expect anything better?

ah, nba.
i read a story a long time ago that documented how much it costs a team that makes the super bowl compared to the extra income it would make. the article at the time was trying to show why bill bidwill never busted his tail to put together a winner.
given how signing bonuses have escalated in the nfl (both draft picks and free agents) i only guessed this article was about the NFL.

competitive and financially solvent are two different animals.

they can blame the salary cap for teams not looking to improve. because whats the point?
what happened to survival of the fittest and good old american capitalism? if a team cant survive they fold or someone else buys them and moves them to a city that will actually support a team
seattle couldnt or wouldnt support the sonics and okc stepped in. memphis wont so kansas city should. etc

I didn’t watch Fallon. I hate how anxious he always is and I can’t stand his voice. Did you see what happened when he went on Leno?

@jimmy- Boston took the loan as well

slow jam news was good. The singing thing with Timberlake was also good but they had done that in a skit on SNL a few years ago. Overall I’d give it a C. De Niro was a bad 1st guest, dude speaks in one word answers.
Tina Fey tonight should be funny.

simmons piece was indeed good. probably the best thing read of his. i’ll get around to it, eventually.

Obviously you’ve never read his “Ramblings” columns.

In terms of the quality of the product…maybe. But comparing a 12:30 show to an 11:30 show is apples and oranges.
In any event, no way will NBC pull the plug on Fallon anytime soon (unlike the quick plugs on Chevy and Magic). They will give that show plenty of time to find its legs.

maintaining the status quo is more lucrative and safe for those at the top than allowing the poorly managed to fall and a better product rise over a period of time.
March 3rd, 2009 at 3:39 PM
That’s good. By most accounts, it takes a show and the host about a year to year and a half to get their footing. I’ve heard Conan and Kimmel say that repeatedly.
March 3rd, 2009 at 3:50 PM
Simmons article was better… one of his best pieces in quite some time, actually. He’s totally right about an impending NBA lockout.
March 3rd, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Yeah, Conan was supposed to be terrible his first three years. I wasn’t even 10 then, so I have no idea if that’s true or not. I’m just happy Conan got to hit his stride and become my favorite network host.
That being said, I hope Fallon passes out from fright on stage. I can’t stand that guy.

Simmons bascially took Faulk’s predictions, tweaked them a bit and then passed them off as his own, even while referencing that article about Faulk.
