Rumor: AOL Sports to Hire “Beat” Writers
1-liner, Media Gossip/Musings March 4th. 2009, 1:45pmMedia Rumors: We hear that Fanhouse (aka, AOL Sports) is going the route of Yahoo Sports and CBS Sports and attempting to hire “beat writers” for the NBA, NFL, and MLB. AOL Sports added three newspapers columnists in January (anyone reading them religiously?) to their large blogger contingent, and we hear that in the coming months, AOL will be plucking newspapers writers to help bolster their reporting efforts. This shouldn’t be too difficult, either – after the abrupt closing of the Rocky Mountain News last week, sports writers in 2-paper cities are beginning to panic about job security through 2009. We hear AOL is already in talks with a prominent columnist to be an NFL writer. Much of Yahoo’s surge in success over the last year has been due to its strong investigative reporting, as well as NBA and NFL scoops.

I don’t know a single person who consistently reads Fanhouse, yet (with all their writers) I bet they pull better numbers than Deadspin and PFT.

Warner, signed, $19MM guaranteed.

I don’t read Fanhouse at all, and Deadspin’s too snarky even for someone who employs it often. I skim PFT for the news, but Florio doesn’t know jack about the game itself and consistently takes shots at teams and organizations he doesn’t like. National Football Post kicks PFT’s ass in terms of actual football info, though Football Outsiders is right there with them.

AOL Sports doesn’t post Fanhouse stats on comscore, so it’s tough to tell what the #’s are. BUT, i believe AOL sports is no more and it’s all fanhouse.

I used to religiously read fanhouse multiple times/day. Haven’t been to the site in 6 months, probably.
I read Nationalfootballpost.com for actual articles to learn things about behind the scenes stuff (contracts, scouting, Matt Bowen’s ex-player stuff). For “NFL news” I read PFT rumor mill only, and try to skip as much of Florio’s glorious writing as possible. He aggregates content from a lot of papers well to get the rumors, so it saves me time hunting.
Never have gotten into Yahoo Sports much, and never go to Sporting News or Deadspin (hate it)

go to pft daily. florio noted monday he had over a million page views.
i might go to deadspin twice a month. too over-the-top, everything has to be a comedy bit routine for me.
i actually go to fanhouse more than deadspin, but not much more.
yahoo sports i go to often, specifically for a few blogs over there and of course box scores.
