Why Didn’t the New York Times Let Murray Chass Write About Mike Piazza’s Bacne?
Baseball, Blogging, Media Gossip/Musings March 5th. 2009, 11:15am
Ornery, sabermetric-challenged former New York Times columnist Murray Chass, who now blogs, claims he tried to write about the glaring and grotesque bacne of Hall of Fame-lock Mike Piazza about 10 years ago. And the paper wouldn’t let him.
When steroids became a daily subject in newspaper articles I wanted to write about Piazza’s acne-covered back. I was prepared to describe it in disgusting living color. But two or three times my editors at The New York Times would not allow it. Piazza, they said, had never been accused of using steroids so I couldn’t write about it. But wait, I said, if I write about it, I will in effect be accusing Piazza of using steroids and then someone will have accused him of using steroids. No can do, I was told. I always took the veto to stem from the Times ultra conservative ways, but I also wondered if it maybe was the baseball editor, a big Mets’ fan, protecting the Mets.
Poor Mike Piazza. First the gay accusations, and now an extensive column exploring his bacne. What’s next, the trials and tribulations of dealing with a foot odor problem? At least he married a Playmate (NSFW).

It would have been bogus for him to “report” on Piazza’s bacne without flat-out accusing him. And while I’m not a big believer in unwritten codes, I’m pretty sure that writing about someone’s physical features that are only visible in the locker room would be crossing a line.

what better post to threadjack than one involving the Mets.
A-Rod out 10 weeks. That was convenient timing.
/end threadjack

He’s an athlete. There’s got to be a lot of athletes with problems like that. At the time, they probably thought it would be just some quirky/possibly gross feature on something trivial.

Guess that punch to the hip Cashman gave him worked. Truth be told, Yankees probably couldn’t be happier to rid themselves of the distraction while they open the season and a new stadium w/out the A-Rod circus

you drafted him, diesel?

The more games A-Rod misses, the greater chance they miss the playoffs. Circus aside, they want him in the lineup.

I’m in a keeper league, have had him for 3 years.

is that why jets beat writers never wrote about neil o’donnel’s club foot?

The Yanks always seem to be slow starters. I really think this will ease the pressure and media circus just long enough for them to get going and THEN have A-Rod come back from witness protection. They will have a better record in mid-May this year than they have the last two or three, I bet (and they have a brutal start, I think)
I’m a Sox fan, so I hope they lose every game, but I really think this will help the Yankees this spring.

What time is the medical special on Steriods causing Cysts on ESPN tonight? Hopefully they will show it every half hour so I won’t miss it.

so this guy is upset b/c the Times kept him from practicing irresponsible journalism?

+1 cabbage
I think it won’t air until tomorrow. ESPN is too busy slurping the Manny and TO stories today. If those poor NFL players died today, ESPN wouldn’t even cover it

Rob Neyer wrote about this column yesterday. He has a friend that writes for baseball prospectus AND is a dermatologist that said that while bacne is a side effect of steroids, there are very reasonable explanations for it and the clearing up that have zero to do with steroids.

wait, i forgot this was Murray Chass. He probably still thinks Rocket being a head hunter, getting a burning salve put on his junk before he pitched and throwing a piece of broken bat at Mike Piazza was normal behavior and not related to roid rage whatsoever.

I think ethically, the NYT was right not to run on just bacne. That would have been a good jumping off point for someone to investigate Piazza’s steroid use. Just running with an insinuation like that would have been irresponsible.
March 5th, 2009 at 12:52 PM
I admire good blogs like TBL because coming up with subjects, consistently, that are interesting seems difficult to me. That being said bacne is not something that even someone as clueless as me would have written about, no matter the context. Dude, why are you staring at someone’s back for long enough to recognize that?
March 5th, 2009 at 1:07 PM
I skipped the comments, but… are you saying there are people who did NOT suspect Piazza of ‘roiding up??? Really?

but ty, don’t you think that being at the NYT, w/ their “Murderer’s Row” of investigative reporters, couldn’t have quietly taken this incident and at least started digging into it w/out publishing anything until if/when they had proof? TJ Quinn, Selena Roberts and others worked there, as I recall.
If I called myself a reporter, it would have at least led me to do some checking over the last 10 years
