but equal footing is earned. money is color blind(o.j. anyone?) and alot of it has to do with that alot of the minorities believing just because the color of their skin and stuff that happened in the past that things should be given to them or they believe that because the color of their skin that they are being “held down” i dont believe that is the case now adays. being poor and part of the majority is the same as being poor and being part of the minority. i grew up poor and can support that claim. now if you averaged how many people got sent to death row based on avg income and it was insanely high in one direction then i would say you have a point. buut im willing to bet the number of majority on death row that is poor match(or very close to) the number of minorities on death row. keep in mind the percentage of the poor minority that committs death row level crimes are probably higher than what majority committs.(i dont have the figures in fronnt of me so if im wrong please prove me wrong.) than its more of a class battle than a race battle in my opinion.

That’s the disconnect. Because so many people from minorities are not on equal footing they’re more likely to commit crimes. Once they do, they’re more likely to be arrested (rightly or not) for them. Once they’re caught, they’re more likely to be convicted (due to racial bias and socioeconomic issues – most minorities cannot hire top flight legal counsel). And once convicted they’re more likely to be given the death penalty. It’s not simply “they’re committing more crimes.”

could it be that there is more of chance that they are put there because certain minorities commit more of the crimes that would be considerd for the death penalty? until there is a time when the majority commits as many crimes as the minority i say that you cant really have accurate statistics.

/by the way im just totally liking this discussion and im not the racist ass that i sound like.

mrejr – The problem with race is the death penalty is this. It’s been proven statistically that juries are more likely to approve the death penalty for a minority defendant. They are also more likely to approve the death penalty when the victim is white. It’s not that there are more minorities on death row that is the problem. It is that they have a far more likely chance of being put there based on the color of their skin.

i never said the issues that minorities face are simple. but do certain minorities committ(or i should say get caught) more crimes than the majority? yes or no?

Sorry, but the sociology of minorities versus the majority in the United States (or any country) is not a simple issue.

and im not saying shoot me as soon as the guilty verdict is read but give it 10 yrs max that you are on death row. spending 35 yrs for the axe to drop is more torture than anything i could imagine.

i know some people wouldnt agree. but in the end how many guilty people have been to death compared to the innocent? sometime people just get fucked and is that wrong but no matter what thats just they way it goes.

I don’t know if I would rather die or take 25-30 in prison, and I also don’t want to take that choice away from someone. Having read a lot of things about people who were innocent and the one thing that kept them going while in prison was the possibility of their innocence being found out, I think some people wouldn’t agree with taking the quick death over the long wrongful imprisonment.
