U.S. Among Bidders for 2018 and 2022 World Cups
1-liner, Soccer, World Cup March 18th. 2009, 1:45pmU.S. Bids for World Cup: The United States has submitted hosting bids for the 2018 and the 2022 World Cup. Â The other bidding countries are England, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico and Russia. Belgium-Holland and Spain-Portugal submitted joint bids. Â South Korea and Qatar bid solely for 2022. One of the bids will definitely go to Europe, with England as the top candidate. USA may be favorite for the other slot, given our infrastructure, history of profitability and Barack Obama. Has there been anymore word on the status of South Africa next year? I know there were some issues with security and stadiums… England or the US was the back-up plan if shit fell thru.

SA will be fine. There is always talk about “X” country not coming in on time but they always do. I just hope we get it in 2018 (though I’m pretty sure ENG will). The WC is my favorite sporting event and I would love to see it on US soil again. I think we’ll get 2022. Better than nothing.

I agree. I went to one game when it was here in 1994 and had a great childhood experience (I think I was 13 at the time). I’m planning on getting some friends together and going to SA for next year’s WC.
I think you’re right about ‘18 though, England should get that one.

Yeah, I don’t think there will be a problem for 2010. In the current climate, I think they will probably go for a country that won’t need much investment in terms of stadiums and infrastructure. Australia could be a dark horse.

I’m hoping to have the money and time to go to Europe next summer and watch some of the games from over there.

I’ve applied for SA World Cup tickets and am really looking forward to it. With the US bid is there any mention of limiting it to a region or at least a coast? It is way too expensive to try and fly around the country for games and that really limits the accessibility and will hurt attendance numbers for some games.
