Catholics Are Upset Over Tigers’ Good Friday Home Opener
1-liner, Baseball, REligion March 26th. 2009, 11:15amTigers Aren’t Down With Jesus: Catholics in Detroit are upset that the Tigers’ home opener will start at 1:05 PM on Good Friday, during the 12 to 3 PM window, where Jesus is alleged to have suffered and died. Â It’s the only MLB game to occur during that time. Â This surely requires more outrage than coverups for priests molesting small children. (Canadian Press)

How did I know before checking that this was a Ty Duffy post?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:21 AM
What a fucking dick comment. So now good practicing Catholics are lumped in disgusting pedophiles. What a fucking jerk.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:23 AM
I wonder when the Catholics would actually read their Bibles. Ask them to explain how one dies on a Friday, rises on a Sunday and how that is supposed to be the third day following His death? I’m not a math genius or a biblical scholar, but I sure as hell know that doesn’t make sense.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:23 AM
No, but that’s an example of something “Good Catholics” could get more worked up about than a f-ing baseball game.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:24 AM
There are good Catholics?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:26 AM
There are good Catholics?
Yep, we’re called ‘Non-Practicing’ Catholics.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:27 AM
during the 12 to 3 PM window, where Jesus is alleged to have suffered and died.
Eastern daylight time?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:28 AM
Give us Barrabas?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:28 AM
And on another note, I don’t know much Protestantism (Catholic school most of my life dontcha know), but don’t they celebrate Good Friday too? And why aren’t they pissed off if this is such a big deal?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Agreed.
/Went to Catholic School for 5 years. Felt like being in a Cult.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:30 AM
It’s amazing how “normal” it is to bash Catholics.
Sparty, I dont know where it says the Resurrection took 3 days, just that it happened on the 3rd day, so that would make the 3 days Friday Saturday and Sunday:
“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” 1 Cor. 15:3-4
March 26th, 2009 at 11:34 AM
agreed, it was still a little incendiary though.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:36 AM
The one and only true religious following.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:37 AM
So do Catholics want everything to stop at that time? Why just baseball?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:37 AM
Yeah, you’re right. Catholics are such a minority in this country. It’s so hard. It’s right on par with being a woman, being gay and being black. We’re so oppressed!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:37 AM
when other religions start fucking little kids it will be normal to bash them as well.
seriously they should worry about how the catholic church has just let these douchebags get moved to other churches in other states.

cracker jack- Christ said he would tear down the temple and rebuild it in 3 days. he used figure of speech in regards to his death and resurrection. i don’t know, when i read that it seems more like; he died, then 3 days later he arose.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Bashing Catholics is an American pastime along with baseball and apple pie. As a “practicing” Catholic, I equate these pot shots akin to any large organization (Apple, Microsoft, US Gvmt, etc).
It’s funny how Catholic bashers never talk about priests who have been wrongly accused by money hungry wack-jobs.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:41 AM
cracker jack- this one too: For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matt 12:40
March 26th, 2009 at 11:42 AM
i know this is probably useless to point out but, you know he was quoting someone else in the infamous video Mike? Not saying hes a nice guy at all, hes a complete dick/zealot but those specific words were not his.

March 26th, 2009 at 11:44 AM
Apple, Microsoft, and the U.S. Government did not systematically protect child molesters and reintroduce them into new communities to prey on more children.
Yes, I’m sure the number of “money hungry wack-jobs” falsely claiming to have been molested by priests, dwarfs the number that actually were.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:45 AM
So what else do the Catholics wanted stopped between 12 and 3 p.m. on Good Friday?
We can’t eat, shit, masturbate, send text messages, go to the mall, or read The Big Lead?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:45 AM

March 26th, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Hi Sparty, there is some good explanation here:
http://www.ecclesia.org/truth/3days-3nights.html
But bottomline, I dont know why this is analyzed so much and fought over, it’s just when it was chosen to observe these events, who cares if it isn’t to the exact hour?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Not all at once, no.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:51 AM
@ Ty
You sure about the U.S. Government? I’m not defending the Church on the molestation (because they made a ton of mistakes, no question), I just find that criticism to be the “my feelings were hurt by a Bully Nun” attitude ex-Catholics take sometimes.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:51 AM
If I was Catholic I would just take a nap between 12-3 or I would lose my mind.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:51 AM
2 outta 3 ain’t bad.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:51 AM
There are people on the internet who take the Bible literally?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:53 AM
And youre blaming me for this?
I hear some cops abuse their power. So fuck them all. I hear some soldiers torture innocent Iraqis. So fuck them all. Broad brushes are wrong no matter the target, why is it so accepted to bash millions of people for the transgressions of a few sick individuals?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:53 AM

March 26th, 2009 at 11:53 AM
The soft bigotry of low expectations.
How right you are. Daniel Patrick Moynihan called it Defining Deviancy Downward. It’s kind of like when we look at the teen pregnancy rate and get proud of ourselves as a nation because it goes down from 20% to 18% (not the actual numbers, just making a point).
March 26th, 2009 at 11:55 AM
my point is that the Catholics go to great lengths to say when it happened, and now are making a big deal about it with the Tigers game. but the problem is that it seems they (the Catholics) are in the wrong anyway.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:56 AM
There is nothing funny about that whole situation. But come on, as a whole catholics are going to get no sympothy of that situation. There are a lot of people who should have been put to death over that, and instead they were protected by the powers that be. It’s fucking disgusting.
Just thinking about this shit ruined my morning. I fucking hate child molesters, I can’t believe as a society we put up with that shit. How can that not qualify for the death penalty?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:57 AM
But its not like the time keeps on changing. Its always noon-3 Good Friday. They are making a big deal because this is the way it has always been. But it doesnt seem to matter because you think Catholics are always wrong anyway no matter what, so what’s the point.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:57 AM
I’m with you Cracker Jack. There’s about 1.1 billion Catholics the world, easy target. Nature of the beast, I guess.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:58 AM
no but catholics could be i dont know a little more involved in getting the sick fucker locked up or dead.
those soldiers dont just get moved to a new company to cover up what they did they go to jail. and those cops when caught also either get fired or go to jail not moved to another precinct.
i dont blame all the catholics. but really do more than just move the sick bastards to a new church.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:58 AM
they argue that their way is truth because the Vatican says so, not because the book they follow is the Word of God (even though they claim it is). just seems very hypocritical.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:01 PM
It should also be pointed out that there was a grand total of TWO people quoted in that article. So Ty writing (as well as the author of the article) that “Catholics in Detroit are upset” is kind of intellectually dishonest, not that I would expect anything different from him.

Kobe has been the closest in terms of MJ comparisons, especially when he was younger. As we’re seeing his ceiling, he’s obviously going to fall short. He’s still relatively young at 30 though, so his book isn’t closed yet.
Everyone’s jumping on LeBron because he’s got more potential with his natural gifts and age. Don’t confuse potential with achievements though. I do think this is the year that he establishes/established himself as the clear cut dominant player in the league.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:02 PM
@ bbryan
See my referenced Michael Jackson article. It’s funny how his “protection” from the U.S. legal system doesn’t fit your argument, just Catholics. Does that you sick to your stomach too?

read this article before staying something so stupid again …
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2009/03/25/2009-03-25_new_york_palace_hotel_boss_niklaus_leuen.html
Most of the people on this blog are young. They don’t remember a time when a predominately Catholic city (Boston, Buffalo, Chicago) WOULD literally shut down from 12-3 on Good Friday and to go Church and say the rosary and observe the Stations of the Cross (go ahead and Google it to see what it means). Baseball fans are generally OLDER fans, who grew up in a time when this was what they did. So before everyone goes off on how fucking stupid Catholics are for this stupid little gesture, try to think back to a time past last month to see how something used to be.
/end rant
March 26th, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Honest request, because I really don’t know — can somebody send me a link to a case involving a convicted priest getting moved to a new church?
March 26th, 2009 at 12:08 PM
We should just put them all on an island…or better yet… an isle
March 26th, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Again, I have to please ignorance about most forms of Protestantism, but do they not celebrate Good Friday too? I work for my alma mater (a Methodist school in name only) and the university will be shut down on Good Friday. Staff, students and faculty all have the day off. So how is this attacking Catholics only? Anyone?
March 26th, 2009 at 12:10 PM
Dammit, ‘plead ignorance’, not ‘please’.
/Spelling fail.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:11 PM
I believe they do MS. Many private schools with no religious affiliation also shut down on Good Friday as well.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Yeah we do ms.
Mike- there’s this, among a couple others that I found.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Current President was heavily influenced by a true-blue psycopath
vs.
Man no longer President finished reading a book to children while the towers fell almost 8 years ago
I’m just saying… I’m sure if we put our heads together and look at this thing objectively, we can figure out which one of these things is more deserving of being ‘gotten over’ on this site. (Hint: One of them was mentioned something like 4000 times last week.)
March 26th, 2009 at 12:13 PM
It was common practice with accused priests, Mike – not necessarily convicted.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:14 PM
TBL,
Maybe you shouldnt let two bit hacks bash peoples religions and paint them all with a broad stroke as pedophiles. It sickens me that children were molested and it was covered up. It happened, I dont know why but when assholes then use that to paint your entire religion and masses that follow it as pedophiles it chaps peoples asses(no pun/well maybe intended)

@mike: as a fellow “non-practicing Catholic”, I would say the better term would be “accused priest the Diocese knew about” getting moved to a new church. I have seen a number of articles where this has been purported to be true, unfortunately.
/feels Priests should be allowed to marry

March 26th, 2009 at 12:18 PM
Mike, there’s a pretty famous instance of the transfer policy with Al Ramos. He was a priest in Mexico and LA who gang raped a kid and had already been transferred for repeated abuse.
Frankly I think it’s unfair to put this all on Catholics, it’s not like they’re the first ones to abuse power for sexual purposes. Fuck em all.

March 26th, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Poor sportsgal. But this is what you get for subscribing to that POS service. They’re the worst in the world. They only get customers because they corner markets. We just got Verizon FIOS around here to compete, unless you want satellite.
Best of luck getting it back on. If you don’t live in the boonies, I’d recommend hooking up a small antenna to your TV to at least get CBS over the air. (unless you’re local CBS provider broadcasts in digital only and you’ve got an analog TV and to that I’m also sorry).
God, my comments have been long today.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:26 PM
I don’t remember if it was with other priests or just other dudes. I THINK it was just other dudes who were up for gang banging a little kid, probably in that article somewhere but I didn’t feel like reading it all over again.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Moleman- Either way. Sickening. When I was in Catholic School I never went into the confessional. It had Glory Hole written all over it.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:31 PM
I am tired of this story…it is discussed every day on local sports radio. If people don’t want to go or watch the game because they are at church, that is fine. It is priorities I guess. If religion ranks high, more power to you.
BTW – All Christian denominations observe Good Friday in some capacity, not just Catholics.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:31 PM
hey there is a alphonso soriano has a big car stereo post!
March 26th, 2009 at 12:32 PM
Yes MJ makes me sick to my stomach, I read that article, it sounded like the government tried going after him. It was 12 idoit jurors who let him off right?
I’m an equal opprotunity hater of child molestors. They should all die. The damage they inflict goes way beyond just the person they are molesting. It’s a vicous cycle, and they have no place in our society.
Having said all that, there is something a little extra wrong about the catholic scandal. Priests are people of great influence, when someone with that kind of power and influence betrays the trust of children like that it just blows my mind. And then for the higher ups to send these priests to different locations to molest again is just maddening. They should be severly punished too.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Yeah we do ms.
Thanks Cosmo. My next question then is why are we only hearing about Catholics feeling as though they are being attacked? My feeling is there is some oversensitivity here. If your religion is this important to you, don’t attend the game. Problem solved.
Could MLB have taken this into account when scheduling the game? Sure. But for some on here to insinuate that this is attack on Catholics is a bit bewildering to me as Good Friday is not just a Catholic Holy Day.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
does the church know there is like 80 more home games for the catholics to attend?
March 26th, 2009 at 12:47 PM
80 more home games + Bible doesn’t instruct Christians to observe “Good Friday” + you don’t have to go/watch/root/care about the game + plenty of other things for Catholic Church to worry about
=
Not a good argument for the ‘lics.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:47 PM
Catholics in Detroit are upset that the Tigers’ home opener will start at 1:05 PM on Good Friday, during the 12 to 3 PM window, where Jesus is alleged to have suffered and died.

I thought so too. I thought I was reading MLJ at first
March 26th, 2009 at 1:19 PM
I think you misunderstand. I dont think anyone said this game was attack on Catholics. I know I for one thought the attack came from the author of this post and some of the commenters. It’s the author of this post who references just Catholics. I should probably say that I don’t care whether a game is on during this time, even as a Catholic. You dont have to watch it. So I would have agreed with the intent of this post if it wasn’t so hateful.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:24 PM
That’s our milieu at MLJ, so I knows it when I sees it.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:32 PM
There is no post that quells any argument Christians might have better than this one. Not to mention that if Xmas falls on a Sunday, the NFL still will schedule games.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Like I said I have no problem with this game being scheduled, but Christmas and Easter are by no means the same type of “holiday” that Good Friday is.
March 26th, 2009 at 2:33 PM
so christ “suffered and died†in detroit?
Doesn’t every one?
March 26th, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Of course not…I wouldn’t even call Good Friday a holiday, as it ‘celebrates’–for lack of a better word–death, which is as depressing as it gets.
March 26th, 2009 at 3:03 PM

Fair enough, but as a Catholic I have to say that I did not find it hateful. That Catholics would be upset by this does seem ridiculous to me, but I am also not a practicing Catholic.
