Billy Donovan is Probably Re-thinking His Decision to Stay at Florida
1-liner, College Basketball March 31st. 2009, 4:30pmNick Calathes: In earth-shattering college hoops news – to the Florida Gators and our fantasy team – Florida’s sophomore point guard has decided to put his name in the NBA draft but not hire an agent. Without Calathes, Billy Donovan can expect another NIT trip; if Calathes returns, Florida would bring back its top five scorers and top four rebounders from last season, and probably be in the mix for an NCAA bid. If he loses Calathes and can’t get to the tournament yet again, in what’s little more than a mid major conference, then I’m ready to write him off as perhaps the most overrated coach in America.
That said, they’ll be in the tournament next year with or without Calathes.

I like Calathes, but while I don’t think this is a very talented draft, it is fairly deep with good value picks at the end of the 1st round. Calathes would probably be pushed to early 2nd round.
I see him as a little bit better Bob Sura.

OKC would be a good fit pairing him with Westbrook in the backcourt.

This is a waste for Calathes. There’s no way he’s going to leave his name in the draft and he’s just getting evaluated, but he should be saving his “one time withdrawal” from the draft for next year.
Now if he comes back and has an ok Junior year he can’t pull his name out next year in case his draft workouts go south or he gets an injury. Don’t really understand why he would declare now.

Florida pays good, but it’s not exactly Memphis money. He’s trying to get paid.

Keep thinking that…
Let’s see, SEC is probably getting Calipari, Grant, and Anderson added this year. That’s quite an infusion of coaching talent. The SEC has had 2 down years, but that will not last.

Oh, the foibles of the sometime college basketball fan: With Calathes, the 2009-2010 Gators should be a top-five seed and could make the Final Four.
Without him, I think they’re still a mortal lock to be in the NCAA Tournament.
Ask GatorTrey. He’ll tell you.

Still absent: actual talent.
