Bittersweet? April’s the best sports month.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:05 AM
best? Huh?
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:05 AM
September is the best month. You have the pennant races in baseball and football season is going strong. It’s not even a contest.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:08 AM
Sports radio in the DC area is exhausting this Cutler situation. By the time I arrived at work, I felt like I needed a drink.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:08 AM
Got a 12:45 tee time today. Fuck off, class!
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:09 AM
October is hands down the best sports month. College and NFL is in full-swing, mlb playoffs, NHL and gets underway, NBA gets close to starting. always something going on to talk about.
april is a very close second. Final Four, Masters, baseballs first month, playoff push in the NHL and NBA, NFL draft at the end of the month. pretty good.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:10 AM
October and April are probably my favorite months for sports.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:12 AM
Got a 12:45 tee time today
I envy you.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:12 AM
I used to think Sept also but I read someone making a strong case for April..
NCAA Final Four, NFL Draft, Opening Day, Start of NBA Playoffs, The Masters, Start of NHL playoffs, etc… that a pretty strong month
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:12 AM
Just clicked on the Cutler link. Gotta love the “3″ destinations. I don’t get the Cleveland or Detriot ones at all.
IMO the teams that would benefit most from Cutler are MN, NYJ, Ariz, Chi, and SF. Detriot needs a rookie to start with an established QB (yes I know it is Dante, but he at least can show the kid what NOT to do). Cleveland has 2 QB’s already.
Cutler needs to go to a team that has most everything setup in place first, and the teams mentioned above, could go a lot farther with an experienced veteran like Cutler.

November?
Holiday for Turkey (Food!)
College football gets interesting
NFL
College basketball beings
NBA is underway
cold weather = stay in, watch sports
April:
End of college hoops
start of baseball
start of nba postseason
NFL tease with the draft
nhl playoffs
warm weather drives everyone OUT of the house to enjoy life, not sit inside and watch sports

what Sparty said
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:14 AM
It’s been a long time since this has happened to me, but I’m still 100% drunk from last night. I haven’t been up this early since I got laid off in February.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:15 AM
FYI – Boozer’s wife
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:16 AM
SG, You still don’t have a job? God that is a scary idea. I got laid off about 3 weeks ago and I am already starting to panic.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:17 AM
i like September and April because the Reds and Bengals are stil ‘in contention’
yeah, i know they suck
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:20 AM
Nope, still don’t have a job and have had to start applying for jobs all over the country. I totally don’t want to move, but I’m going to have to if I can’t find a decent paying job here. I enjoyed the lay-off induced sabbatical for the first month, but now that I’m in month three, I’m in full out desperation mode. Hence, I get drunk out of my mind on a Wednesday night.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:21 AM
Damnit Roeth! All that Google searching for nothing.
Any month with NFL football is the best month, but April is pretty strong too.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:21 AM
I can’t include April and September for baseball because Pirates fans know the season doesn’t start until the Pens are finished in the playoffs (usually in May) and ends when Steelers training camp starts in July.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:22 AM
SG-hope things look up for you soon.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:25 AM
horrible pic of Megan Fox
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:30 AM
Yeah true I would put October up there as well. Maybe this is because I love baseball.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:31 AM
man, that boozer story looks sad.
SG – cure for your hangover: Fast & Furious 3
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:31 AM
April is second to any month when football is happening. I love March Madness and the NBA playoffs, a lot, but they pale in comparison to NFL or college football in full swing. Plus fall weather.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:32 AM
ha! that’s been going damn near non-stop in tampa for over a month now.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:33 AM
that one really sucked
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:34 AM
one of the commercials for the new movie said “the best of the Fast and Furious movies” like that was something to brag about.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:36 AM
SG, look to DC; plenty of government related positions around. Though, you’d have to become a Caps/Skins fan.
And get yourself a bloody mary, asap.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:37 AM
I see some people read Simmons’ mailbag yesterday. October is the best, hands down.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:38 AM
October’s the best sports month, and I don’t think it’s a contest. I suppose April could be if you’re a college hoops or baseball junkie, but any month without any NFL or college football being played can’t be the best sports month.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:38 AM
I love football with a passion, but April is definitely the best sports month. Not for the sports that I can watch, but more for the sports I can play. The weather is just getting warm enough for golf, basketball at the park, softball, shoot even running outside. With that little bit added plus the old man in me that loves going to any baseball game and enjoy drinkin and dippin. Yea, not even close, April rocks my socks.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 AM
I’m not hungover yet. I’m still happily drunk.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 AM
November, all football all the time without anything getting in the way. And turkey.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:40 AM
its funny that Bush was called the CEO president and was scrutinized for it, but now its Obama who is seemingly trying to run every company that is receiving tax payer $$$.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:41 AM
Gotta agree with formula on this one SG. Although I am proof that you DON’T have to become a skins or caps fan. You will get to see the Cubs for a series, every couple years the Bears will come to town, and tickets to Chicago are pretty cheap.
Jobs here are plenty and if you don’t mind working for a new company every couple years, govt. contracting is pretty lucrative.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:41 AM
sportsgal- did you wake up drunk? Or have you not gone to bed yet?
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:43 AM
The real question is if SG is just “she needs some food to tire herself out to pass out” still drunk or “can we play a game of never have I ever with no boundaries” still drunk?
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:44 AM
SG – What industry you in?
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:44 AM
I’ve applied for a bunch of government jobs in DC. So far haven’t heard back on any of them.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:47 AM
+1,000
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:48 AM
A lot of people on this site are unemployed
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:49 AM
I woke up drunk, but I think I only passed out for maybe 3 hours.
Bsanders – I worked in telecomm project management for 5 years and have some experience in sales (although I don’t want a sales job). I have a science degree (BS in pre-med Biology) and wanted to try to find something in a science-related field, but I’ve realized I’m not qualified to get a science job right now. I’d have to go back to school, and I’m way too old to do that.

SG go to usajobs.com
The trick with those government jobs is that it sometimes takes almost 6-9 months for them to get back to you. If you apply to like 100 govt. jobs, you will probably only get like 3 hits. I know this sounds bad, but once you are in, you are in. The fact that you haven’t heard anything is actually a good thing. In the meantime, apply to companies like BAE, Booze Allen, SAIC, CACI, Northrup Grumman, Boeing, L3, etc. All of these companies have millions of dollars in government contracts and you can bide your time being a contractor until you find the govt. job you want. Also, try to find a job that would allow you to get a clearance. Once you have a clearance, you can pretty much ask for 20k more a year depending on how high your clearance his.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:52 AM
bsanders- by a nose.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:52 AM
USAjobs.gov, pki. I’ve been on there since February. Have my resume posted and average at least three applications a day.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:54 AM
damn. thats gotta be disheartening after awhile. I would totally be buying lotto tickets that whole time too.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 AM

Bingo. A clearance cash-in-hand around here.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:58 AM
SG,
Just hang in there. I have 9 years military, and I still haven’t found the govt. job for me. Seriously though, if you do decide on DC, go contractor first and get a clearance. It sounds harder than it really is. I think like 40% of the workforce here in DC has a clearance.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:59 AM
They seemed so happy in the commercials.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 AM
asshole.
TBL…you forgot to mention the Masters in April.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 AM
Is there any way to get clearance before I get a job? I’ve had to provide my college transcripts and my SSN on most of the applications I’ve sent in.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:09 AM
They have to do an investigation. Basically they put in a clearance for you and then you fill out this 30 page document listing everything you have done in the past 10 years. People you lived with, places you have lived, jobs you have had, schools you went to, your family. Credit issues, arrest records.
The trick is that no matter what you have done (i had some credit issues when I was in my early 20’s, but who doesn’t) just be up front and honest and they usually just pass you. The whole process takes about 9 months, but you can get an interim clearance and still work there.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:10 AM
The goverment takes a very long time in the hiring process. My wife went through this and the process took at least 3-4 for months before everything was said and done. The good thing about the job once you get it, very tough to get fired from.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:10 AM
SG – I think you can, but it makes more sense to have the company or government pay for it because the process is kind of expensive. Most places hire you based on your ability to obtain a clearance, which they contract out to another company that specializes in doing that. I don’t know of many companies that do their own background checks…
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:19 AM
If you get a gov’t job with a clearance, you can spend part of your morning knocking down coffee and reading blogs.

April 2nd, 2009 at 9:20 AM
Thanks for all the info! I’ll try to process it when I’m sober.

Ha. Ditto.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:30 AM
Good luck! My husband got laid off last year, but in the mean time because the city was restructuring he could apply for another job and thankfully got it. There is no way we could have survived on my state salary with a family of four.

Man I can’t wait to get paid to do this again.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:39 AM
i love getting paid to comment on blogs!
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:47 AM
I pay for the right to comment on blogs. Hurray tuition.

Give my vote to April. October a very close 2nd.
