Cris Collinsworth, Come on Down, You’ve Been Selected as John Madden’s Replacement
Media Gossip/Musings April 16th. 2009, 12:30pm
Well, NBC sure made that anticlimactic. Less than two hours after NBC announced that John Madden was retiring, the network just said on a conference call that Cris Collinsworth will take Madden’s spot this fall.
Smart, swift move by the network – it gave no time for anyone to bother speculate about Matt Millen, prying Jaws from ESPN, or even the prospect of a three-man booth.

Good job, NBC. Just don’t put a third guy in the booth.
April 16th, 2009 at 12:40 PM
If they put a third guy in, both Michaels and Collinsworth will toss him out into the stadium

And Boomer Esiason starts yelling at his autistic kid for no damn reason …

you do know that Collinsworth was designated the heir apparent last year, right?

Jay – Somebody just asked a question about the 3-man booth … they said, “there’s no room.” Whew, indeed.

He’s right, yet this is a MAJOR downgrade. I like Collinsworth’s analysis and hate his picks and play-by-play. He is a Jim Nantz wanna-be too. This is not as bad though as going from Keith Jackson down to Brent Musberger in college football though.
I don’t like Bob Costas except for his excellent play-by-play, but he is not a football play-by-play man.

So does Chris get the NBC Cruiser Bus?
//Warning : smells like stale pickles and feet.
April 16th, 2009 at 1:05 PM
Since he’s the color guy and thus doing analysis and not play by play, I think we’re going to be good here.
Collinsworth is an upgrade from Madden on a proficiency level. Madden had lost his fastball a couple years ago and kinda became a parody of himself. Which is fine, the dude’s old. But, like it was mentioned in the previous post, the games always felt bigger when Madden was there.

Anyone else find it funny that Madden retires the same offseason that Brett does?
April 16th, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Also, there’s nothing more annoying than seeing Musberger call the OSU/Michigan game every year wearing maize and blue ties. Jesus, at least Bob Griese’s son was on the team when he was openly rooting for them from the booth.
