Why’s the SEC Dodging the Pac-10?
1-liner, College Football April 22nd. 2009, 9:30amSEC vs. the Pac-10: This should be fun – Auburn was given the chance to play UCLA this year, and passed. The game would have been played in the Georgia Dome, a de facto home game for the Tigers. The mighty SEC passing on an opportunity to beat up on the overrated Pac-10? Weak. (Birmingham News)

Both conferences are frauds. What else is new?
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:33 AM
New coach, new system, new scheme… not worth it for the Tigers. Now for UCLA on the other hand, beating an SEC team in Georgia would have played out very well in the polls. Still, I’m not shocked. Stop teasing me with college football in April.

Michael Crabtree is on Mike and Mike. He is totally Lt. Sydnor from The Wire

Thank goodness Auburn passed because that opened up VT v. Bama.
Hokie W to start the season will be nice.

Is he doing hand to hands with Liam?
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:38 AM
Agreed, pmc. The Tide are frauds of the highest order.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:39 AM
I’ll be there.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:41 AM
I will be selling tickets, my tickets specifically if the price is right.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:44 AM
At least TBL did us a favor and posted this early before the Pac 10 worshipers are awake.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:46 AM
If the Pac-10 is so overrated, then why can’t anyone outside of the Pac-10 beat USC?

Why did Auburn dodge? Because for that program right now, that looks much like Tennessee/UCLA did last year — a bad loss in waiting with no actual benefit. Until the number crunchers make strength of schedule matter again in the BCS and penalize teams for weak-sauce opponents, this will continue to happen.
The SEC is top-heavy. You can say Florida, Alabama, LSU, and probably Ole Miss look good this early. The rest of the teams are a complete guessing game.
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:47 AM
If the SEC and Pac-10 is so fucking good, why can’t they beat the Bucks in Columbus?

Can PSU get that UCLA game? Our schedule blows, and the AD knows it (he tried to work out a last minute addition with TCU)

@Roethlishotdog – When are you guys going to sack up and play Pitt?
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:56 AM
auburn was/is already scheduled to play west virginia this year. why would they need to schedule another bcs conference game, expecially considering they have a new coach and a new offense?
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:58 AM
Penn State/Pitt isn’t happening until JoePa leaves. Sad but true.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:01 AM
Major assumption considering Paterno doesn’t know how to read a schedule anymore. I think he just shows up to the pressbox on gameday when he’s told.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:01 AM
When Pitt realizes that PSU needs to have 3 of the 5 at home to make it economically viable in the long-term. There may be a home and home here or there in the future.
Our schedule does improve in the next few years, with home and home series against Alabama, Virginia, Rutgers and Nebraska.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:07 AM
I haven’t heard this argument before, explain?
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:15 AM
For games at Heinz Field: Capacity is 65k, Pitt generally draws 25 to 35k. So, when PSU comes to town, roughly 50% of the stadium is PSU fans anyway. PSU would earn only 40% of the revenue from a game with 65k in attendance, of which half of them are our fans.
For games at Beaver: Capacity is 110k, and sold out every game. So, when Pitt comes, Pitt maybe has 5% of fans. PSU earns 60% of the revenue from a game with 110k, of which 95% of them are our fans.
Quite simply, 60% of 110k is much greater than 40% of 65k.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:17 AM
Plus, from Pitt’s side, 40% of 110k is greater than 60% of 65k.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:18 AM
damn, you’re right.
i just started frothing because these discussions are usually awesome.
also, i put down some $ on VT to win the title. i know it’s all about UF-OKL but after that 1st game, VT has a good shot to run the table. Return the bulk of the offense. If UF or OKL slips, VT could sneak in due to the lame system.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:21 AM
@Roethlishotdog – Pretty logical and it makes sense to me. I can see why it won’t fly, because Pitt fans will always just take it at face value and think PSU is getting one over on them by getting an extra home game.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:24 AM
Yep. The SEC is overrated. That’s why they win the national title every year.
UT is going to assrape UCLA this year.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:26 AM
@TBL – Talent wise our offense is going to be one of the best in the nation, we’ll see if we can execute.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:29 AM

The Land Thieves’ OL is decimated. Good luck with that.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:32 AM
Pitt wants to be treated as equals when negotiating with PSU, even though its obvious they aren’t on the same level, on the field or in the stands. The problem started with JoePa years ago, now its Pitt acting bigger than they are.
SeanJean, does it feel good to bask in the glory of your hated rivals? I wouldnt enjoy that.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:33 AM
Auburn just canned Tubberville and their program is going through transition. Playing a team like UCLA can be dangerous to their season, specially since they then have to run the SEC gauntlet.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:34 AM
Somebody (TBL and apparently all the rest of the commenters) didn’t read this article. Auburn didn’t turn down this game for this year. They turned it down for 2010.
Instead the 2010 game is likely going to be Bama vs Texas, although there is some talk about SC vs Texas as well.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:36 AM
This is a myth.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:37 AM
Best team does not mean best conference. I know this is a difficult concept for SEC fan to understand. A losing record against the Big 10 in bowl games the last 10 years doesnt help the SECs argument either.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:38 AM
Bowl wins don’t mean the best conference either.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:41 AM
The SEC will have plenty of opportunities to “beat up on the overrated Pac-10″. Specifically, on September 5th, when LSU throttles Washington in the Huskie’s crib.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:43 AM
Agreed, but head to head in general matters. Obviously the Pac 10 and Big East play in much crappier bowl games than the SEC and Big 10 so it is much easier for them to get meaningless bowl wins.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:44 AM
A victory over a team that went winless the previous season? That’ll show ‘em!
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:44 AM
Oh so now one game doesn’t destroy a whole conference? Illinois and Penn State basketball want in on this discussion.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:49 AM
Cursed, you completely misinterpreted Clown’s remarks.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:54 AM
haha yeah, i realize that. But seriously, how did the big 10 get killed on that in b’ball, but not the sec in football.
April 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Ahh. Nothing quite like a college football argument. Dammit, it’s only April.
April 22nd, 2009 at 11:56 AM
I love the beginning of the season with the out-of-conference matchups because it throws the handicappers off their game with mobs of fans all thinking their po-dunk team is the next national champion and putting millions on it collectively. This is ESPECIALLY true of the SEC, Big 12, and USC fans, the latter who have often a legitimate outlook.
And then once they play on the road out of conference or occasionally have a team unrecognised swoop in at home and smack their asses, these folks shutup the rest of the year because also they are broke from getting too cocky in betting not to mention a much overdue ego check.
Bet the spreads and points folks, not the teams. (But don’t listen to me really, as that makes for better action for the rest of us)
April 22nd, 2009 at 1:53 PM
The SEC had about 5-6 teams ranked in the top 20 all year last year. I hate this argument. It’s so stupid. Just admit defeat other conference team followers. The SEC’s resume is better. Plain and simple.
April 22nd, 2009 at 2:21 PM
First let me say I’m a Bama fan and that means I don’t like The Cow College in Auburn, BUT let’s get the facts straight.
As Jay said, the game was for 2010 and Auburn’s schedule was full and they honored their commitments to those other schools.
Also they offered to play them in 2011 and 2012 when they had open dates.
And this all happened weeks ago.
Much ado about nothing.
It’s this kind of bullshit that gives bloggers a bad name.
April 22nd, 2009 at 2:29 PM
Yeah, because the SEC beats up on the Pac-10.
April 22nd, 2009 at 2:33 PM
So did the Big XII. Rankings don’t mean shit.
