@mak: I agree to a point, but when I lived in NYS, the teacher’s union was a joke. Those teachers made ridiculous coin for life by doing what a lot of union do: bank vacation and use it to retire early, or to increase their last few year’s pay, which is what their pension is based on.

I knew union guys who would work ridiculous OT for the last 2-3 years they worked, raise their pay by 40%, and then get a pension based on those last two year’s pay (plus healthcare for life). It’s killing today’s companies & is what makes the US uncompetitive.

Not a lot different than millions of retired union workers being paid $75K/year plus health benefits while those currently employed are losing their jobs.

I’m looking at you UAW and Teacher retirees!

Better question, how do you eliminate it? You guaranteed a job, for life. You have to kill them to save money. Is it worth it?
