Why Not? Early Thoughts on the 2010 NFL Draft

Because it’s less than a year away, and it’s never too early for this kind of fun speculation – after Sam Bradford goes No. 1 next year, then what? There are some prospects to ponder here (though Tebow at 16 may elicit a laugh), and this mock draft has the Browns picking second and grabbing Illinois WR Arrelious Benn.
If you were disappointed by this weekend’s supposedly-shallow talent pool, fear not – next year’s group has highly-thought of skill players who are pegged for potential greatness: USC safety Taylor Mays, Alabama DT Terrence Cody, Tennessee DB Eric Berry, Florida LB Brandon Spikes, and perhaps even speedy Clemson RB CJ Spiller.
(Yes, this post really only applies to fans of the following teams: Raiders, Lions and Rams, all of whom seem to be the best bets to be in contention for the No. 1 pick.)

Thank God the Jets and Giants are set at QB. I’m just not sure Bradford would be able to handle the New York Hype. He doesn’t have cagesy scenester written all over him.

If the Vikings take Tebow next year that’s it for me. I’ll be done. I’ve stood by Jeff George, Tavaris Jackson, Gus Frerrote. I’ve stood by Mike Tice as a head coach and Brad Childress as a head coach. If they draft Tebow before the 7th round they can go fuck themselves.

Next year’s class should be stacked. Most likely 2010 will be the last draft without a rookie cap/scale, so anyone and everyone will be coming out hoping to score a Heyward-Bey kind of cash in.

At this point last year, John Beck was probably Miami’s starting QB.

You’re right. I’m not worried about what my team looks like 48 hours after the draft. Lots of stuff could happen over the next two months.
When my Saints went from 3-13 to the NFC Championship, all I needed for that to happen was for Drew Brees to come off shoulder surgery and become Dan Marino, and the 4th-to-last pick in the draft play like a stud. All of that with no defense to speak of.
Yet it happened.

If Pat White can go high in the second round, I don’t think it unreasonable that Tebow goes in the first, though #16 might be pushing it.

Berry is only a junior so he could be back for a senior year. His father played at UT and he has a younger brother who might be a freshman when he’s a senior (not sure about how old Little Berry is). Dude is an abso-freakin-lute stud.
There is legitimate argument Eric Berry is the best player to ever wear the orange in Knoxville, regardless of position. Manning, Reggie White, Al Wilson, you name it, Berry could be the best. And this is from someone who saw all three of the aforementioned Vols play, not some 19-year-old who thinks Florida has the most football tradition in the SEC. (Yes, that’s a gratuitous shot at the nouveau-riche of the SEC. Lane Kiffin is rubbing off on me.)

As unbiased as I can possibly be, Eric Berry is one of the best college football players I’ve ever seen play. Definitely one of the best safeties I’ve ever seen. He reminds me a lot of Sean Taylor, but with a lot better head on his shoulders and less attitude. A really great player, and a great kid. I definitely think he comes out after this year, because I’m pretty sure I’ve heard he’ll have his degree already anyway, and he is a lock for a top 10 pick at the worst.
