Ricky Hatton’s Head Hurts
Boxing, Knocked the F Out May 3rd. 2009, 12:45pmManny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton only lasted two rounds. The above clip is of the fight in it’s entirety, which is just over eight minutes long including replays. It’s a must watch. Hatton went down twice in the first round and was absolutely brutalized at the very end of the second round.
The British and Irish announcers here make it quite the experience. I cannot stop re-playing the 7:02-7:26 mark:
“OHHHHH! That might end it! Massive left hand!!! Lays Hatton out!! Do they need a count here!?! I think this is the end of it…. IT IS OVER! Ricky Hatton’s dream has died!! Manny Pacquiao has taken him out in two rounds! He is still the pound for pound king… and… it’s a nightmare experience in Las Vegas for poor Ricky Hatton…”
Hatton spent several minutes on his back and had to be taken to a hospital for a precautionary brain scan, but his father says he’s fine:
“He’s perfectly all right,” Ray Hatton told BBC Radio Five on Sunday. “They’ve checked him out. He’s had all the tests and everything. He’s not got a mark on him.”

“he polaksed him”
that’s what one of the announcers said near the end … what does that even mean? i have no clue how to spell it to look it up, but it’s going to be one of my favorite words, right up there with “knackered”

Not a huge boxing guy, but that was entertaining. (Probably b/c of how much action was packed into a shorter period of time, much like MMA).
Oh and TBL, there are three pound for pound champs in MMA. GSP, Anderson Silva, and Fedor.

TBL, Tony Bruno used to use that term on the radio all the day.. Means to get punished or crushed I believe.

Poleaxe” is the medieval name used by the English for the long-handled footman’s warhammer, regardless of whether it actually had an axe head or not. These same weapons could be called bec-de-corbin, or bec-de-faucon in French (depending on the shape of the back spike,) or fussstreithammer in German, or martello d’arme in Italian. Lucerne hammer is a more modern (19th century) name that may include many of the same weapons. The name derives from the Swiss town of Lucerne where a particular poleaxe with a long-pronged hammer head was very popular.
Warhammers are generally a percussive type of weapon designed for delivering crushing blows, although some of them were capable of cutting as described below. This emphasis on crushing made them rather popular tools for combating well-armoured, as well as unarmoured, opponents.

One, pacquiao… it used ti be mayweather until he “retired” but manny is plowing through the big names right now… mayweather (pending the marquez fight) has to to fight pac man… he is having tax problems and he cares too much about being the best to not wanna take him on. Mayweather pacquiao will make shit loads of money. Pencil it in for November or December.

TBL,
I don’t know how to spell it, but being from England when someone says that it means, smashed/clobbered/crushed, basically.

I watched it last night and I thought Hatton was gonna die.
PacMan knocked him down with a right and out with a left. Hard to defend when he’s that strong from both sides.
PacMan and Mayweather will ge HUUUGE, which is funny since these guys are so small. Shows the condition of the Middleweight and Heavyweight divisions that these 140 lb guys “brings da ruckus”

I thought it was really funny that no one, NO ONE, mentioned how you oculd see on 24/7 that Pacquiao was working on that right handed punch. The left was the put down punch for sure. But Pac was blatantly going after hatton’s left side all night. And then when ricky doesn’t realize, drops the left right on him. It was beautiful how simple it was. Hit him with the weak hand, save your strong hand for when he’s sleeping.

ah damn, didnt know the game was underway. id be surprised if Miami pulled it off on the road
May 3rd, 2009 at 1:22 PM
I’m rooting for Miami.
May 3rd, 2009 at 1:28 PM
I’m rooting for this series to just go away.
May 3rd, 2009 at 1:31 PM
That’s what a main event is supposed to be. I have a few buddies that are big MMA guys. They convinced me to watch the Silva fight, wow, I could have fallen asleep. A championship fight with nobody fighting. It was terrible. Last night’s fight was incredible.
May 3rd, 2009 at 1:42 PM
Zeke, you picked the wrong night to watch a bigtime MMA event. That card was disappointing from every aspect, the bloggers have even called arguably the word night in 5+ years. So i wouldn’t go using that night as a reason to not watch.
And even if you did, Anderson Silva still put on an effing clinic on Mixed martial arts. Still shouldn’t have finished the fight..but he left the ring without a mark, and embarrassed his world class BJJ opponent. (Literally world class).
But boxing fans that bash MMA for their short main events (Jim Lampley), have no room to talk. Yes, it was exciting, but that’s why it was exciting last night. It was short (although still too much clutching after every engagement).
Funny that Lampley criticizes short MMA fights, when the Tyson era was popularized by short fights..and boxing was 100 times bigger than it is now.

Kevin Harlan’s game 7 calls >>>>>>>>> Mike Breen’s game 7 calls.
Wow, How does Mike Breen call the NBA championship, when he’s the fifth best guy doing NBA games.

Need to come up with a term for a turnover which leads directly to an easy leak out dunk for your opponent.
For now, I’m calling it The Wade.
May 3rd, 2009 at 1:54 PM
i think it was 14-12 Miami when i turned it on. a shower and a few minutes later: 27-12 run for Atlanta.
i think there will be 2 ejections in the second half – miami’s frustrated already, their coach has no clue, and someone’s going to flip the F out

and before I forget.

This game sucks. The series sucks. Can the Cavs just get a bye and both of these teams be eliminated?
May 3rd, 2009 at 2:07 PM
paul williams should get a mention in the “best pound for pound” argument. nobody throws as many punches per round/fight as that guy and he’s huge.
May 3rd, 2009 at 3:16 PM
poleaxed as in hit with a pole ax

And there wasn’t an Irishman near this fight. That fellow with the brogue is 100% Scottish.
