Media Fight: Radio Guy (and Blogs) Rip ESPN Joe Morgan, Steve Phillips
Baseball, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings May 18th. 2009, 6:15pm
While we were watching the Magic dismember the Celtics in Game 7, Joe Morgan and Steve Phillips were pissing Mets fans off as the Amazin’s were blanked by Matt Cain and the Giants on ESPN Sunday Night baseball. The duo even took an opportunity to trash sports talk radio – something that angered the rotund Mike Francesa, prompting a lengthy rant about how terrible Morgan and Phillips are.
In summation:
Phillips: The Mets should trade Carlos Beltran. He’s not worth the money.
Morgan: Disagree.
A fan points out all the bums who played CF for the Mets while Phillips was GM: Brian MacRae, Jay Payton, Preston Wilson, Benny Agbayani, Timo Perez, Jason Tyner, Joe McEwing, Alex Escobar, Roger Cedeno, Jeff Duncan and Tsuyoshi Shinjo.
Phillips: David Wright can be the leader of this team.
Morgan: David Wright will be the MVP of the NL this season.
It all seems pretty tame … and then Phillips brought talk radio into the equation, bashing the medium for wanting to trade Jose Reyes.
This was an obvious shot at Francesa, a die-hard Yankees’ fan who laughably repeated this mantra after the Mets’ second straight NL East collapse last Fall: You gotta break up the core. The chorus grew louder last month after the Mets slow start … but now Wright’s the hottest hitter in the league and the buffoons on talk radio have been silenced.
We can’t wait for someone to post the video online. Joe Morgan took most of the beating, and Francesa accused him of “parachuting in” and “not doing this homework.”

Phillips’ comments were in the context of blaming Beltran for the failures of the Mets in recent years, thereby taking blame away from Reyes and Wright, who have been whipping boys in NY in recent years, though not entirely unwarranted.

Phillips ruined that game last night. He went on for 3 innings talking about how Beltran is not mentally into the game at times, a bad baserunner and ripped him for no reason. Um, Steve. the guy is leading the NL in hitting. He has one of the highest stolen base percentages in MLB history. I can’t stand Phillips. He ran a pretty good Met team into the gorund, tried to trade Jose Reyes, and traded away a ton of assets before Jim duquette finished it off and traded Scott Kazmir. If he didn’t get lucky with Piazza he would have been even more atrocious.
Now he’s going to tell the Mets what to do? Jackass.

I couldn’t believe what my ears were hearing. And I’m a Yankee fan.
May 18th, 2009 at 6:39 PM
You could fit 19 Jason Tyner arms into one average sized MLB jersey sleeve. He ruled.
May 18th, 2009 at 6:41 PM
If only FJM was still running…
May 18th, 2009 at 6:41 PM
Beltran is one of the 4 or 5 best players in all of baseball. Phillips needs to shut the fuck up.
May 18th, 2009 at 6:48 PM
That booth needs a massive overhaul. Miller is a nightmare as well.
May 18th, 2009 at 6:50 PM
That pic of Morgan always kills me. What the is he, a lizard-fish?
May 18th, 2009 at 6:55 PM
Did mike say all this while chugging a twelve pack of diet pepsi?
May 18th, 2009 at 7:10 PM
wouldn’t go that far on the first part(among outfielders, yes), but agree with your second part
May 18th, 2009 at 7:30 PM
3 feet from back to back to back.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:32 PM
I just traded for Beltran in fantasy, so Steve Phillips is hopefully a fool.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:33 PM
Beltran is one of the 4 or 5 best players in the National League. Phillips needs to shut the fuck up.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:36 PM
i had 7 hershey kisses today. not good.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:37 PM
wait wait so one dipshit got mad at another dipshit for say something stupid?
is that what happened?
May 18th, 2009 at 7:38 PM
It’s nice to see the umps are just re-defining the balk rule out there. I didn’t know you could do that.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:39 PM
5 of the top 6 best players in Major League Baseball all reside in the NL anyway: Pujols, Utley, Hanley, Wright, and Beltran. The only guy who would crack that is a healthy A-Rod. So saying he’s one of the 4 or 5 best in the National League doesn’t change my point at all.
And if you care at all about defense, he’s one of the best.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:41 PM
I initially read: Rip ESPN Joe Morgan, Steve Phillips as
RIP ESPN’s Joe Morgan, Steve Phillips
And got a little excited.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Alex Escobar was a rock star in MVP Baseball 2003. Dude could cover CF and beat out his share of groundballs.
He was no Jay Gibbons, but then who was.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:47 PM
You only get one life TBL, go ahead, make it 8.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:48 PM
Beltran is certainly in the top 10 of all hitters when you include defensive numbers. A viable argument could be made for top 5.
Beltran is yearly worth $20mm+ per season. There’s a reason Phillips isn’t running a major league team anymore. His opinion on the matter should be taken with a very tiny grain of salt.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:49 PM
i agree Nick, but I’m just making the point that the NL is much much weaker than the AL, look at Manny crossing over into the NL last year (granted he is one of the greatest hitters ever) its almost like batting practice for some of these guys. Holliday on the other hand, i know its early and maybe he just hasnt realized he’s not playing in Coor’s anymore, but maybe some of it has to do with the talent of pitching in the American league. That was such not a Billie Beane move by signing Holliday….but he’ll dump him for prospects before the deadline and make me look stupid in two years
May 18th, 2009 at 7:57 PM
Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:01 PM
What is this NL you speak of? I know what AAAA is, but not the NL
May 18th, 2009 at 8:06 PM
it is the league that the Twins should be apart of.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:07 PM
Good point sparty. Not every team can spend 200 million to be in 3rd place
May 18th, 2009 at 8:08 PM
not everybody can play in the dominant AL East either.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:10 PM
Thats the division the Yankees are in 3rd in right?
It’s tough to win an argument with a retard, as I’m finding out.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:12 PM
Why the need to get nasty?
May 18th, 2009 at 8:16 PM
yes, the Yankees are 3rd in the best division in baseball, that is head and shoulders above every other division in MLB. The Yankees are 20-17 and in 3rd place, which would put them pct pts behind the leader of the AL Central. Unfortunately, the Yankees have to play more games during the year against really good teams, unlike teams in the Central.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:32 PM
Francisco Cervelli owns the entire league.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:37 PM
rookie of the year is on AMC.

May 18th, 2009 at 8:41 PM

May 18th, 2009 at 9:08 PM
anyone got an idea about lakers -6.5 tomorrow? Boston and both horse races have cost me some, need to get it back.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:29 PM
This may cost me my Father of the Year award, but I can’t hear the hockey game because my wife is singing lullabys to the little one. God Damnit, take that upstairs. I need to focus.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
nice night for the yankee newbie.
2 dingers and applause. lots of applause.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
Boucher!
May 18th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
@Dirty: You could live here in South Florida and have the fucking DirecTV go out because its pouring out right now.
/comcast was right
May 18th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
comcast is better but those motherfuckers are killing me for phone, internet and cable.
/back in the day before the unlimited long distance i can remember paying %300 a month just for phone so it isnt all bad.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
That was a little too close for comfort.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Thank God the Pens held on to that, otherwise it would have been one of the biggest screwjobs in officiating history. Apparently knocking a goalies stick out of his hands isn’t a penalty in the third period, absolutely atrocious no call that led to a goal.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:07 PM
Is there anything more boring that reading comparative political science articles?
May 18th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
I turned on ESPN at 7 p.m. to watch Twins-Yankees. Heard Berman, muted it. Thank goodness 24 season finale was on at 8 and saved me from five innings of dogshit talking from that self-loving jerk. Now, I turned it back on and muted it. Bravo, me.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:13 PM
what are they on tallguy?
May 18th, 2009 at 10:16 PM
you’ve obviously never read anything about “religion in american public life in the 20th century”
most boring class i’ve ever taken in my entire life. and im a history major.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
absolutely nothing on tv. watching something bad called “Shutter” with Pacey Witter and a really cute blonde who may or may not have been in transformers.
is this what summer has in store for me? i need a hobby. may take up connect 4 again.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Great picture of Francesa, that from 1955? Next time he should splurge on a color camera.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Berman is on the Yanks/Twins call tonight. Shoot me.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:33 PM
The article that’s killing me right now is “changing Models of Party blah blah blah” by Katz and Mair. Dry as all get out and just mind numbingly boring. I much prefer IR to this shit…good lord my terrorism/counter terrorism professor is like a real life Bear Grylls, if Bear Grylls had escaped from a Chinese POW camp 19,000 ft above sea level.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:34 PM
Berman is on the Yanks/Twins call tonight. Shoot me
he was on Baseball Tonight last night and Kruk looked like his dog died. I turned it off after 5 minutes
May 18th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
@jpq: you’re right, Kruk looked miserable. Berman was a mess too, some real choppy segments. Seemed like a last minute replacement or something.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
color purple..BET…good movie…and i just had a dominos chicken bacon ranch torpedo delivered. life is good
May 18th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
Berman has really lost his fastball (not that it ever went more than 65 MPH). He was bad at the draft, and I’ve seen him a few times on the set (last night, Sportscenter), and he’s not the same.
Maybe he went to Canada and has been hitting the deux deux deux’s too hard
May 18th, 2009 at 10:48 PM
anybody want a good laugh? I guess T.O. did the 6 PM Sportscast on the ABC station in Buffalo tonight, and was better than the guy that usually does it.
Pathetic Buffalo also gave him the key to the city
http://www.wkbw.com/
May 18th, 2009 at 10:49 PM
did he drop the key during the exchange?
May 18th, 2009 at 10:51 PM
did he drop the key during the exchange?
no, but it’s a key to any of the thousands of vacant buildings in downtown Buffalo
May 18th, 2009 at 10:56 PM
Maybe I’m late to this but has anyone seen the Mexican (hehe) standoff between Vince McMahon and the NBA
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4176082
May 18th, 2009 at 10:58 PM
surprisingly when the sports anchor went to the bills practice to be the temporary wr it was discovered that he to could drop accurate passes, alligator arm passes over the middle and alienate teammates, coaches and front office personell. he was then signed to a 5 yr contract worth 15 million guaranteed. gooooooooo bills!!!
May 18th, 2009 at 11:07 PM
The Nationals are an utter disgrace.
That is all.
May 18th, 2009 at 11:07 PM
mrejr: T.O. might be an egotistical, coach killing, QB hating, team wrecking overrated prima donna, but he’s OUR egotistical, coach killing, QB hating, team wrecking overrated prima donna, damnit!!!

May 19th, 2009 at 2:05 AM
I have yet to meet even a New Yorker who likes genuinely Francesa, as no one outside New York does for sure, but then I again I would not want to meet such douchebags supreme and to hell with them like most of Manhattan and all of The Bronx, Staten Island, and Long Island. Hell let’s throw into the same abyss the whole of the states of New Jersey and Connecticut as well.
