Ladies and Gentlemen: Mike Lupica!
1-liner, Baseball, Media Gossip/Musings, Politics May 27th. 2009, 11:30amLet the Record Show: Sonia Sotomayor did not save baseball. She merely made a judicial decision that prevented owners and the players union from conspiring to destroy the sport. She did not single-handedly reinvigorate baseball’s economic system or reconstruct it in a manner more pleasing to Mike Lupica. This minute distinction was definitely column worthy. Mike Lupica is saving newspapers.
I’d say it only took three sentences to bring up the Yankees in his column, but that actually is his target audience this time.

One could argue that she helped destroy baseball. By preserving the players’ negotiating power, she opened the door to the ensuing decade of PED use. The owners were powerless to stop it. At the same time, they were incented to remain complicit. Because the strike ended sooner than it might have, they took a big loss (rather than saying “screw it” and starting all over) and thus felt the need to make a splashy return to get asses back in seats. Had the owners crushed the players, they could have reinvented themselves the way the NHL has (though far more successfully). Moreover, the Red Sox don’t win a Series, Pink Hat Nation is never born and all is right with the world.
Damn you, Sonia Sotamayor.
