Legacy, Interrupted?
NBA June 11th. 2009, 6:15pm
The focus is Kobe, obviously. He sputtered in the fourth quarter – a guy can’t have one bad fourth quarter in the playoffs? – and the media pounced, so expect a flawless, 30-8-8 performance in a Lakers win. We’ll project Lakers 104, Magic 99. Our hope: SVG gets Howard to attack Gasol early and often, drawing fouls and putting LA’s 2nd best offensive threat on the bench.
To read: Rashard Lewis and his family problems.

Good article.

It’s dumb that the Magic even show up to these games.

June 11th, 2009 at 6:43 PM
jeez that article makes me like lewis.
June 11th, 2009 at 6:45 PM
Ah yes, the all powerful 30-8-8. Only to be topped by the even mightier 30-10-8, or the omnipotent 30-8-10. Actually, there are a lot of performances that are “more flawless” than a 30-8-8.
/just being a dick because I’m bored
June 11th, 2009 at 6:56 PM
Bynum starts on Dho. And Pau is the best offensive threat.
I hope they get Rafer on some pick and rolls early. And that Kobe is in a shooting mood.
June 11th, 2009 at 7:01 PM
so expect a flawless, 30-8-8 performance in a Lakers loss
is it still considered flawless if it’s on 12/34 shooting?
June 11th, 2009 at 7:01 PM
much has been made and rightfully so that the magic shot a record percentage and only won by 4. this is used to show that Lakers will win this series. these people seem to forget that a courtney lee lay-up at the buzzer is all that was between the magic winning in L.A.
magic need to have more people drive to the hoop or quit lobbing passes to DHo. zing ‘em, give him a chance to not be double-teamed. of course, he could also learn a post move or two
June 11th, 2009 at 7:04 PM
/nickp
June 11th, 2009 at 7:05 PM
actually as much as i would love for the magic to keep winning when little Gina Marie Incandela sings the national anthem i think the lakers are gonna come out guns blazing
June 11th, 2009 at 7:06 PM
Lakers will win easily tonight. Kobe will prolly get 20-25 points at the most. Odom and Gasol actually showing up(five rebounds combined last game) will key the win.
June 11th, 2009 at 7:07 PM

Just saw Hangover. All of you who said to “make sure to not miss the credits” are morons. There was no way to miss those photos, they literally started showing them as the credits rolled, the only way to miss them would have been to leave the movie five minutes early.
So what did I do of course? Stayed till the end of the entire credits waiting for something sensational. I’m done with this effing site.
But seriously, pretty funny. Not an all-timer..but pretty good.

You all know as well as I do that he’s el terible at interviews. He might be anti-gang, etc., but he got a crafty PR person to write that. Now, he needs one to teach him basic English besides, “We gotta’ work hard and keep up the intensity” to every question.
Did any of you read the comment from Jeeves in the Rose/Gang sign post earlier?
From Chicago. Had to go through some training regarding gangs as a camp counselor a few years ago.

@TBL … Do You MAN !!!
Kobe needs to pace himself and make sure his best qtr is the 4th quarter
Gasol & Odom need to be BEASTS on the boards and DON’T^ MISS 10 free throws
Regardless what D-Ho and them do, The LAKERS do that and they’ll win Easily IMO
June 11th, 2009 at 8:12 PM
A)the Taliban didn’t crash the planes, they just harbored Al Qaeda’s leadership
B)In most of the Middle East, the prevailing theory is that 9/11 was masterminded by the Jews, and that all Jews that worked at the World Trade Center were warned not to goto work that day. Yes, they’re backward, but that’s the version of events that’s taught there.
C)The people turning against the Taliban is HUGE, and you really shouldn’t make light of it…not saying it’s right, but planes killing Americans are approx. 1436135714561th on the list of things the average Pakistani cares about. Beating a woman in public and having it spread across the country however, is something they care about.

June 11th, 2009 at 8:32 PM
The Taliban have been flogging women in the streets and executing men in the soccer stadiums for years. They did it in the early 90s when they overran the mujahideen and all the way until we bombed the fuck out of them in Oct. 2001.
So, to me, that line in the report about “turning public opinion” is misleading. The Taliban are oppressive fucks and some of the lowest form of life on earth, but I think people in Afghanistan and Pakistan already have their minds made up about them – good or bad – since the Taliban have been around for nearly 20 years.
June 11th, 2009 at 8:33 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 9:05 PM
I’ve said this every Finals game for the last four years, but I seriously can’t believe Mike Breen is calling the biggest games of the year. Just doesn’t seem fair. I think he’s alright, but not Finals level. I’d rather have Albert, Harlan and yes, even Gus Johnson…heck, Sean McDonough. How about the fall from grace of McDonough…the dude called World Series games, now he’s relegated to Big East Tournament games (although technically..ESPN considers them more important than NCAA Tournament games)
June 11th, 2009 at 9:06 PM
Those puppet commercials are so fucking terrible.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:07 PM
Mike Breen just came back to tell us that the “starters are on the floor” ..interesting coaching maneuver to say the least to begin the game.
God I hate him.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:08 PM
i agree. not a huge fan of breen.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:08 PM

McDononough told our broadcasting class at Syracuse that Robert Craft blackballed him from the NFL. (broadcasting, not playing).
Although I would argue, it was because they didn’t want him in the locker room (inside joke for Syracuse and Boston people).

I agree, in a needs to wear a helmet special kind of way. He’s awful.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:17 PM
See this is my problem with the refs sometimes. They shouldn’t have called either foul in that sequence, instead both Pau and Dwight have a fou..
Notice that SVG only complained about the second needless call (against the Magic). He’s not even trying to be fair.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:18 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 9:20 PM
can either bynum or oden stay healthy?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:22 PM
Pau Gasol just doesn’t look aggressive defensively…again. It’s times like these where I’m not ready to get on the whole “Pau’s a top 10 player” trip. Pau hasn’t even tried to get good post position in this game yet. That’s why the guy only gets 10 shots a night sometimes. Not b/c they’re not trying to get him the ball.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:25 PM
Mike Breen just scripted that entire film session commentary..about the Magic’s “game face being a big fat smile. It’s not for everyone but it works for the Magic”
UGGGGGG
June 11th, 2009 at 9:25 PM
who on earth said pau was a top 10 player? in the west? or in the league?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:26 PM
Bill Simmons has alluded to it multiple times.

June 11th, 2009 at 9:30 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 9:30 PM
I know D-Ho’s post game isn’t the best, but when will the Magic start abusing Mbenga down low???
June 11th, 2009 at 9:30 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 9:32 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 9:32 PM
Not to belabor the point, but starters not named Kobe for the Lakers are 1/8 from the floor, 0 assists, 2 rebounds.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:34 PM
Gasol is top 10.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:36 PM
For 19 pts and 10 boards a game? And no defense? Agree to disagree.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:37 PM
Duder is Bill Simmons, I’ve decided.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:41 PM
I have used Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Flock on three different computers to vote for DJ Mbenga as T-Mobile player of the game.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:42 PM
Does Kobe have LeBron’s supporting cast tonight. First quarter:1/8, 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists
June 11th, 2009 at 9:42 PM
Gasol is top 10
Agreed. Gasol is one of the top ten Lakers playing this season.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
1. Kobe/LeBron
2. LeBron/Kobe
3. Howard
4. Pierce
5. Wade
6. CP3
7. Parker
8. Duncan
9. Yao
10. Deron Williams
June 11th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
Outside of Howard what C had a better year?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:44 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 9:44 PM
A-ROD!
June 11th, 2009 at 9:45 PM
The dearth of centers doesn’t make him a top 10 player.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:46 PM
I think Phil Jackson should have just said, “Look, Bennett Salvatore’s out there, we need to be smarter and realize he’s going to do everything he can to give the game to the home team.”

6. roy
7. dirk
8. durant
9. melo

June 11th, 2009 at 9:46 PM
No Dirk. You don’t watch much NBA?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
finally
June 11th, 2009 at 9:48 PM
But why does that make him a top 10 player, did you set some imaginary rule stating that you must take from every position to fill out the top 10 player list?
/you know i love debating you duder
June 11th, 2009 at 9:48 PM
Pierce, CP3, Parker, Deron are not better. Yao is always hurt.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:49 PM
Hastily thrown together, mostly to show Gasol doesn’t go on the list. I don’t necessarily disagree with Dirk being there. Who comes off though?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
Wow the Lakers are in jeopardy of getting routed. That foul trouble killed them and who’s playing well outside of Kobe?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
Is there a PED that helps you become a better shooter in 5 days???
June 11th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
Maybe not Pierce, but there are very few people that would take Gasol over the other 3 if you were forced to pick between them.
/love this commercial with Biz Markie
June 11th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
But why does that make him a top 10 player, did you set some imaginary rule stating that you must take from every position to fill out the top 10 player list
Regardless of position, Howard’s a top ten player, whether this post was serious or debate fodder.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:51 PM
LOL
anyone who says Gasol is a top 10 player in this league loses whatever nba cred they built up. if it’s a joke, you got me. hardy har har, i fell for that dumb shit.

June 11th, 2009 at 9:52 PM
It is off.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:54 PM
So, you know kobe will come back in the game and take shots b/c of what his guys are failing to give. But then he’ll get ripped for it. Would you trust these guys right now?

It’s not a battle we can win, Cursed.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
LOL. Crowd wanted a foul… Lewis was shoving Kobe.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Chicago, I’ll be the first to admit that Kobe has had some bad moments in game 2 and 3 (wait, I’m a Cleveland fan anyway), but the Lakers can’t win these finals unless other guys step up.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Pau is a top 30 player. Definitely top 5 in terms of #2 guys.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
How good is Pau Gasol? he show’s us everything. Case closed.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
I think I’d take Duncan off for Dirk, just at first glance.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Melo and Durant? The guy love chuckers with no D apparently. Where are Arenas and McGrady?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Refs have given this game to Orlando. No way you can dispute that.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
disregard what I said about lewis shoving Kobe.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Watching the post season this year, I can’t believe that anyone can still say that Kobe>Lebron. Supporting casts aside, Lebron’s individual performances were transcendent in comparison. Not saying Kobe’s play isn’t great, it’s just not at Lebron’s level.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:59 PM
Melo did a solid job on Kobe in the WCF. Durant is a top 5 scorer, will improve as his team does.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:59 PM
That last one was a good call though, even though Hedo did jump into him, Odom jumped forward instead of straight up.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:59 PM
Meh, home team almost always gets the jump into the guy foul, even as blatant as that was.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:00 PM
true dat
June 11th, 2009 at 10:00 PM
OK. Let’s play look-alikes.
Patrick Ewing = Gorilla
Mikael Pietrus = Easter Islands (mrejr’s brainchild)
Pau Gasol = anorexic caveman
Luke Walton= male Sarah Jessica Parker
Who else?
June 11th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
Lebron would not put up those gaudy numbers playing the triangle 50% of the game.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
Call a charge on LeBron when he drives(the right call) instead of putting him at the line, he is a 15-20 points a game guy. He has no shot.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
IBANEZ GOES YARD!
3 run job int he 10th, mets are cooked
June 11th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Awaiting moderation? I didn’t post anything wrong.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Well, I’d argue that Orlando is still playing way better, but they’re definitely getting the calls that matter. Foul totals are pretty even, but it’s the degree of fouls and who they’re calling them on which is killing the Lakers.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
I think I’ll watch the Superstars just to see Joanna Krupa in tight clothing.
Then, I’ll go google her to see her without that clothing.

I like how the NBA draft commercial stopped before mentioning the 2005 top pick
June 11th, 2009 at 10:03 PM
pierce may not be a top 10 player, but he’s better than gasol. so is allen, so is KG.

Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Duncan, KG, Howard. After that you could argue Yao when healthy, Ginobli when healthy, Dirk, CP3, Parker. Hes probably 7th best.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Mickael Pietrus = Easter Islands (good one, mrejr)

Pau Gasol is getting devastated on the boards…not even trying to box out. He’s seriously killing them, second straight game this has occurred. But nobody ever writes or mentions these things.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Was that Calipari cutting down the nets with KY in that commercial?
June 11th, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Yes, that’s why he shoots all of 2% less than Kobe from three. Of course. And really, Kobe probably benefits from calls more, because he can’t get to the hoop as well anymore.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
It’s because he doesn’t get enough touches, cursed. Can’t rebound or play D without touches. Back off the guy.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Nope, nobody mentions those things cursed.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Why would he need lube to cut down the nets?
June 11th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
I don’t see how you can have Darius that far down the list.

June 11th, 2009 at 10:14 PM
I think LeBron is better, but those three point numbers are skewed. Kobe doesn’t see open looks ever, for LeBron, that’s all he gets are wide open threes whenever he wants them.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:14 PM
Contribute in some way? Any way?
June 11th, 2009 at 10:14 PM
All the talk about superstar vs. superstar and which supporting cast is best, the only answer is that D12’s supporting cast is greater than both Lebron and Kobe’s. I still say this is the only year the Magic have to win it. The rest of the league will figure this team out. Orlando is running the ‘Wildcat’ of the NBA.

I may stop watching. TBL, dont even say ‘don’t blame the refs.’
June 11th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
mrj – what high horse are you talking about?
Tallguy went to Duke. that’s a pretty damn high horse. if you really want to tick him off, take shots at jon scheyer …
June 11th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Yes all of them are MUCH better. Except Parker, who just a little bit better.
Pau might be in the top ten players 6′10″ or taller. That’s as far as I’ll go.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:16 PM
True Duder, but I’m basing it on so much more than that, like last year’s finals…
June 11th, 2009 at 10:16 PM
tbl they’re saying yoooge(which is actually just huge). ‘uge(copyrighted by me) is a way to measure size of a dip and other things that are just slightly bigger than huge
June 11th, 2009 at 10:16 PM
I rebutted but it was mostly to state facts, not argue against his non-lucid comments.
I hear John Stachour (sp?) from ESPN Radio say it all the time, but that’s just how he normally talks. Almost like he’s got in a mouthpiece.
I hope it’s not from DAne Cook because I can’t stand that guy’s act.
I also saw spencer write it one time.
I’m a poser, I guess.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
people not named kobe on the lakers: 9-for-28
the math major in me says that’s like 31%
June 11th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
This is just fucking stupid. If I am Kobe, I get my team and tell them to walk off the court.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
Laker fans complaining about refs is the definition of irony.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
I do believe he is a top guy in the league. 19 and 10 isn’t particularly amazing, but getting points with Kobe on the floor is difficult. He’s actually a much more efficient scorer than Kobe. And a lot of people forget that he was the best player on a team that won 50 games inMEMPHIS! His PER has been between 25 and 22 for a couple years straight.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:18 PM
mrej – i know it’s ‘huge’ but it’s like a saying that’s sweeping the nation (!) because i’ve heard other people randomly say it. figured it was some comedian somewhere, young kids are into comedy, right?

is gasol better than al jefferson?
i would say no.
he’s not better than bosh.
is he better than nene? lamarcus aldridge?
please take into consideration the fact that Gasol is playing with kobe.
fyi – i like Gasol in Memphis, he has always been a nice player. not elite, just very good.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:22 PM
It would help Gasol’s case significantly if he could remember to play defense. Even if it was only 3 or 4 possessions per game. And you can’t blame it on having to d up Howard, because Gasol has never played defense.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:22 PM

yooge is what new yorkers/new jersey and other people who sound the same as they do when they are tryion to say huge. ‘uge is something that i ripped off of that idea and fancied it up by dropping the h and adding a apostrophe(it looks something like a euro hipster would say)
June 11th, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Marc Gasol > Pau Gasol
June 11th, 2009 at 10:23 PM
I see your point, it’s just that if you can be defended more effectively, then you’re going to be less effective as a shooter. Its not like he can’t shoot. I admit I’ll take Kobe in a 3-point contest, but that’s not the way either of their games’ work
June 11th, 2009 at 10:23 PM
remember lakers fans, your team blew an 18 point lead last finals game 4, so,
anything is possible
June 11th, 2009 at 10:24 PM
LA – 13 fouls, 8-11 FT
Orlando – 12 fouls, 10-17 FT
Not that big of a difference. We got some homers here.
Hey is this Best Buy chick in the commercial cute?
June 11th, 2009 at 10:25 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 10:25 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 10:26 PM

2 on Lee, Pietrus, Battie. Irrelevant fouls.
10 on Gasol, Bynum, Odom and Powell.
1 on Howard. He should have fouled out by now.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:27 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
jason bay!!
June 11th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Lee and Pietrus fouls irrelevant? Yeah, totally not important. They’re only the guys who draw the Kobe matchup every game.
TAlk about irrelevant. How about Powell. Bynum gets into foul trouble b/c he’s been out of sync all postseason.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
This^^^^
I think he is definitely better than Jefferson. He’s basically the same player as Bosh, at least as a scorer/rebounder. And he’s especially good on the O-glass. Not elite, but if you think about how they affect a team with a superstar it’s a whole lot different.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
He definitely adds the element that completes that song. I love his (mother fuckeeerrr) repeat after the original lyric. So funny.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
They are actual fouls. You can’t dispute them. The 10 on the Laker big men were all questionable/didn’t happen.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
I’d trade his ass for cap space so fast. I’d rather have Odom and Ariza than Bynum’s “potential”
June 11th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
Powell(who) & Bynum = relevant.
Pietrus & Lee = irrelevant.
Fair enough.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
So the Lakers shouldn’t have any fouls?

blasted yankees. haven’t watched the entire game, but girardi is likely to get ripped. leading 3-1, leaves sabathia in to start the 8th, gives up a few hits, brings in a non-enity named Alfredo Aceves … and now it’s 4-3 red sox.
cant wait for hernia to rip the shit out of these bums. a-rod’s ‘big’ double all for naught
June 11th, 2009 at 10:35 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 10:35 PM

June 11th, 2009 at 10:35 PM
I don’t remember much of it, I just remember being creeped out by it.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:36 PM
You can’t dispute all the fouls, obviously. I bear more of an issue with calling a moving screen on powell when he’s standing still on the same possession the Lakers need a big bucket. Or next play on defense calling a block on Fisher when he stood still, Howard accidently ran into him, then shoved him, Fisher fell, the refs looked at each other, and then called a block. That’s the sequence when I gave up. Magic were able to go from 8 up to 12 up with 2 minutes left in the half on two bullshit calls.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:36 PM
Dwight Howard is pretty good at reading those questions someone prepared for him, but the getting up to run away at the end kind of ruined the effect.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:36 PM
Russ sure owned Wilt
Chamberlain averaged exactly 28.7 points and 28.7 rebounds a game during those 142 games, the point totals brought down a bit by his late-in-career transformation from relentless scoring machine to more well-rounded player. In the early years Wilt scored 50 or more points seven times against Russell, including a high of 62 on January 14, 1962. By the time we could start referring to these men as “aging warriors,” the numbers were a bit more back to earth. Wilt’s high game in their final year was 35, and three times he scored in single figures.
Russell’s totals against Wilt were 14.5 points and 23.7 rebounds per game. His highest-scoring game against his arch rival was 37.
That, and Willis Reed being a “warrior” by coming on the court and scoring 4 points, are two of the biggest urban legends in NBA history
June 11th, 2009 at 10:36 PM
Smush Parker and Kwame Brown. Yes, Gasol was a major upgrade, as is Ariza..but anyone would have been.
I’m not trying to crap on Pau, he’s so skilled and fun to watch offensively. but when you see those replays and see him literally not moving underneath, that’s bad, really bad.
June 11th, 2009 at 10:37 PM
Okay, I give up. This is so blatantly wrong that I am sure you will never be convinced paps.
/Sorry about the PER I was reaching

We all know refs miss calls. And can miss many. Simmons’ article last week was damn fine and he made a ton of valid points.
But the complaining here is at a pretty high level right now. It’s funny and sad at the same time.
