Game 5: Lakers @ Magic – Second Half
NBA June 14th. 2009, 9:18pm
Sorry about the lack of a first half post. I figured you all just wanted to hang with Greg Ostertag for a bit longer. At the half, it’s Los Angeles 56, Orlando 46. Kobe is 24 minutes away from rewriting his legacy. He’s got 15-4-4 at the half. I wonder how he’ll celebrate if the Lakers hold on? In related news, Andrew Bynum is getting his shots tonight.

kobe.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:28 PM
how does my ass taste
June 14th, 2009 at 9:30 PM
i think kobe will start balling(crying) if he wins this
June 14th, 2009 at 9:31 PM
Am i the only one who thinks shaq to cleveland would put them over the hump? His fat ass would be motivated if he knew he had a legitimate shot at winning a title. Wouldnt he be an upgrade vs dwight? Discuss..or not.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:31 PM
exactly like dwade’s ding dong.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:33 PM
upgrade? probably. over the hump? i don’t know about that.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:36 PM
i think kobe will start balling(crying) if he wins this
I just hope Bob Costas doesn’t ask him what his mother thinks
/I still laugh EVERY time I think of that interview
//”Costas” “The champagne in here has blurred my vision”-lol
June 14th, 2009 at 9:36 PM
Good for team chemistry, but he can’t do as much now as he used to. I’d say scorch the fields and get Durant.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:38 PM
I completely believe Shaq won’t be able to stay healthy for a whole season outside Phoenix. Though it would be funny because if the Cavs won a title with Shaq, LeBron would immediately move into “Well, he hasn’t won without Shaq yet” territory.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:38 PM
jpq everytime I think Costas I think of The Buzz Bissinger Incident.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:38 PM
I’m thinking that this game will still be undecided in the 4th quarter so I’m only watching sporadically as Cliff Lee is throwing a no-hitter through 7.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:40 PM
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ODMOM!!!
June 14th, 2009 at 9:40 PM
The Cavs don’t need shaq in the regular season. They just need him for the playoffs.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:41 PM
Cliff Lee is doing something special in cleveland right now. I’m not gonna say because I believe in jinxes.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:41 PM
jinx?
June 14th, 2009 at 9:42 PM
@Lance: yeah, that was good, but this was, to me, classic TV.
I have tried to find a video of that interview w/ Jordan in the locker room. It is SO funny, in that Jordan is BAWLING and Costas calls his wife his mother. So funny, in that you KNEW Barkley and others never let MJ hear the end of that one, and also that you knew MJ was hitting everything that moved for that precise reason.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:42 PM
@GSG, 2 more innings
June 14th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
Southern Miss tied it up 4-4, Top 8, based loaded, 1 out.
/ Concerned
June 14th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
oh good. Against the cardinals. Hope he pulls it off
June 14th, 2009 at 9:44 PM
5-4 Southern Miss, bases still loaded.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
Kobe with an unbelieveable shot!
June 14th, 2009 at 9:48 PM
That was an amazing shot!
June 14th, 2009 at 9:48 PM
Damn it molina. Good job, Lee.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:49 PM
Yadier Molina breaks it up
June 14th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
Didnt stay to watch the replay but it looked to me that the guy half assed it to right field
June 14th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
Wow, Dwights got 5?
June 14th, 2009 at 9:51 PM
How was that foul not on dwight? hit his arm and elbowed his back
June 14th, 2009 at 9:54 PM
what is turkalu 0 for 3/4 against the lakers in the playoffs?
June 14th, 2009 at 9:54 PM
when your leading scorers are Rafer Alston and Courtney lee, I’d say the Magic are running for the bus. Pretty pathetic effort on their home court.
June 14th, 2009 at 9:59 PM
What a boring game. David Stern must be spinning in his grave. Wait…
June 14th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Bottom 8: Southern Miss 5, Texas 4, Runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. I guess “Amazing” missed it’s connecting flight to Orlando tonight, and is hanging out in Omaha.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Just got back from out of town, about to go 0-4 on my CWS picks….but who cares cause THE PENS WON THE CUP!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:05 PM
June 14th, 2009 at 10:06 PM
Am i the only one who thinks shaq to cleveland would put them over the hump?-
Seriously, if Shaq does get traded I have to think Lebron jets after this year. We got exposed because our bigs were too old and slow against Howard, and Shaq is older than both. Plus, we don’t have Phoenix’s training staff to keep him healthy, and he needs games off during the season to stay fresh. Ferry needs to stop with the patchwork veterans and start getting some decent youth that can help Lebron in the future, not one season at a time.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:06 PM
Yes! Kobe.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:07 PM
12 mins to go!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
Did Jeff Van Gundy really just say he wished the Lakers would play the 4th without Kobe on the floor?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
Ok, Laker fans here other than me and Karma unite.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:10 PM
anyone know what Redick’s tat on the side is?
i actually think that’s a great place for a tat. Looks cool if you can get the ladder going. mario lopez (there with his hot GF), has the ladder.
and yes, i realize that’s maybe the gayest link on the site today.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Unwatchable, god damn you fraudulent Magic, catch fire for two weeks and rob us of the finals everyone wanted.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
I can’t wait to hear what the Kobe haters have to say after tonight. Fortunatley his 4 NBA titles will be plugging his ears. As much as I loved the 2000-2002 title runs, this one will be sweeter. Shuts up the haters.. for a lil while @ least.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Damn right, and he wished for more than that. Justice would be an end to his time in broadcasting in the revolving sorry-ass NBA door of ESPN.
When that happens before next season, it will be anti-climactic not just because I said it here. But I’ll let TBL Godfather hear it for sure anyway. What an obnoxious douche over his head there Van Gundy, and that candy-ass “neutral” Mike Breen is annoying. Only Mark Jackson barely passes muster enough to make a case to stay though he is a Knicks and New York homer like most of the folks at ESPN anyway.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:12 PM
KOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBE!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:12 PM
HUGE 3!!!!!! FROM WHO??? 24!!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:12 PM
It’ll be nice to see all the Orlando “fans” go back to not following sports for another decade or so.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:13 PM
Texas takes the lead 6-5, bottom 8, 2 out, bases still loaded.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:13 PM
Unwatchable, god damn you fraudulent Cavs, sucking dick when it counted, then whining when the team that beat you gets crushed , but at least saved us from the finals no one except Cleveland wanted.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:14 PM
Right it MJ of Turkey’s grill…I CANNOT WAIT for the end of this game. 5 years of hearing shit from EVERYONE who hated Kobe will all end in one night, atleast for one day.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:14 PM
If the Lakers resign Ariza.. They’ll be the class of the west for awhile. Pau Kobe Bynum Ariza… That’s a nice core. They could have another 1 – 2 titles in them.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Right it MJ of Turkey’s grill…I CANNOT WAIT for the end of this game. 5 years of hearing shit from EVERYONE who hated Kobe will all end in one night, atleast for one day.
Karma, you my new best friend.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Oh yeah definitely. I can’t wait also to tell all the Cleveland/Ohio/Big Ten Lebron homer types and sudden Nuggets, errr Knicks fans cheering for them all over the media, to EAT MAJOR ASS on here when they win at last, and I will be happiest most for Kobe and then for Jackson to get the so-called “critics” off their cases for awhile.
Watch also how quickly these biased douchebags try to move the conversation away from the championship and onto the next season instead of savouring it for a whole week or more like they do with the New York Yankees whenever they win it all. The quicker they are talking about next season this week, the more biased they expose themselves to be and Kobe or the Lakers could never do enough for them.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:16 PM
but at least saved us from the finals no one except Cleveland wanted.
…and ABC, the NBA, Nike, Vitamin Water, Basketball fans, the rest of the world…
June 14th, 2009 at 10:16 PM

June 14th, 2009 at 10:20 PM
2010 Finals.. Kobe/Lakers vs Bron/Shaq/Cavs ???
June 14th, 2009 at 10:21 PM
This will be MUCH MUCH sweeter than 2002…I would’ve been surprised if the Nets took even one game in 2002.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:22 PM
Yes, and HELL NO. Shaq is NOT going to Cleveland, and the Cavs need an overhauled frontcourt altogether to mathcup better against Orlando or Boston with Garnett back. Of course it is a tall order to assume that Lebron will stay in Cleveland too. Alright please enough about NEXT season at least for one day? See it has started already!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:22 PM
I’d say that Odom is more crucial. The fact that they can play him in 3 different positions is key. If he leaves (and I think he will), they’ll miss that versatility.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:23 PM
2010 Finals.. Kobe/Lakers vs Bron/Shaq/Cavs ???
IF I HAVE TO LISTEN TO A YEAR OF THIS, I WILL KILL 500 PEOPLE!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:24 PM
If (when) the Lakers win tonight, Lebron comes back into the conversation tomorrow.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:25 PM
with your musket
June 14th, 2009 at 10:25 PM
Paolo, believe I’ll be savoring this title for awhile! Especially after what happened after we traded Shaq. Believe, I’ll enjoy this one for a while!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:25 PM
It depends on who’s willing to take a pay cut too. If Kobe and Odom are willing to take a pay cut and Ariza takes a hometown discount, they could potentially bring them all back
June 14th, 2009 at 10:25 PM
Ok JPQ, just don’t blow your cover and just make sure they are in New York, New Jersey, and in Cleveland okay if you are going to blow your top and do that?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:26 PM
Southern Miss ties it in the 9th, 2 outs, and they have a runner on first.
/ Now I know how hockey fans feel when they update games here.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:27 PM
i have seen more energy from a crowd at a funeral than what the magic fans are giving out

June 14th, 2009 at 10:29 PM
You can make a case for Ariza being Finals MVP
June 14th, 2009 at 10:29 PM
with your musket
SPONGE: No, with these!!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
I could see Kobe and Ariza giving them a discount, but I don’t think Odom will. It’s purely a guess, but he doesn’t seem to be that kind of guy.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
For the Kobe Haters: 30pts 6rebs 5assists 4blocks.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
No you cant
June 14th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
Ariza bailed him out.
/Kobe haters
June 14th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
I’ve heard reports that Lamar loves being a Laker and Simmons has been saying Lamar only wants to play in beach cities, so he might take a cut
June 14th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
Stanley Cup > Whatever they call the NBA finals trophy
Congrats to Lakers fans though, even though I haven’t watched a second of the finals and they could in fact be behind right now
June 14th, 2009 at 10:33 PM
Dont forget about Shannon Brown. He will be key in replacing Fisher.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:33 PM
That puppet commercial was terrible.
Who is gonna get the mic first? Phil or Kobe?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:34 PM
JPQ: haha, nice
June 14th, 2009 at 10:34 PM
You can make a case for Ariza being Finals MVP
No you cant
Yes you can.. He sparked some big runs in the 1st 2 games. He sparked the big run in Game 4 in the third, and his defense has been superb all series.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:35 PM
whyiam: first of all is your nick from the dave matthews song ? and second the only way kobe doesnt get mvp is if all the voters are complete morons

/Penguins’d
June 14th, 2009 at 10:36 PM
Sparking a run is not MVP worthy. Scoring 30 a game with 8 assists is.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:37 PM
You other Laker fans here stick around all week don’t go into hiding; this site needs seriously a few days of West Coast bias at least; it is East Coast/New York biased more than anything else often, but not near as bad or as often as the mainstream media.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
I thought “Midwest Coast Bias” was a clever site name, is it worth visiting?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:40 PM
It’s entirely possible he’ll stay. Ariza’s signing won’t be a cakewalk either though. Some team is going to throw stupid amounts of money at him. For a team that won the title, the Lakers will have a decent amount of work to do in the offseason. Besides Odom and Ariza, they need to get younger at the 1 (Farmar’s not the answer), and find a way to keep Luke Walton off the floor. And somehow transform Bynum from a stiff to at least somewhat decent.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:40 PM
I am from New York.. So we have MAJOR East Coast Laker representation here!!
Yes, my tag is from the DMB song. I cant wait to get the Dave Matthews hate now..

2009 CHAMPIONS!!!!
June 14th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
Mike Breen’s call of that title was embarrassingly bad. Seriously. Did he know that a championship was being given out for that?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
No, it’s not. Shooting 42% from the floor is.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
When the Big Ten returns to prominence, perhaps, otherwise no or you’ll have to settle for the half-Midwestern city of Pittsburgh, which I hear is a decent town and has way better folks than Philadelphia. And hey they have two champion teams this year again
June 14th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
True, just ask Jordan in 96 and 97. And with much less passing.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
+4 Paolo.
And, 6-6, bottom 9th, 1 out, Texas has runners on first and second.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
I think the biggest question is, can Kobe top … “ANYTHING IS POSSSSSIIIIIBBBBBLLLLLLEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!”?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:43 PM

And fuck the East Coast ninnies on the bitchies all the time — no hope for them.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Do those championship hats ever have cool designs? Or, do you forgive the crappy design if your team won the title?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
I wish there were a way to hold people accountable for making such brain dead claims.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
When does all the talk start about Kobe being unable to win it all without Gasol?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:47 PM
What the fuck does this have to do with anything? The only people I’ve seen mention LeBron in this thread are the Lakers people. Obsess much?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:48 PM

June 14th, 2009 at 10:59 PM
Breaking News: Adam Morrison allowed in Laker locker room. Now getting drunk off flying champagne.
June 14th, 2009 at 11:03 PM
Wow that’s some interesting perspective. Hadn’t really heard that before, but it does get me thinking.
June 14th, 2009 at 11:21 PM
Just went back and listened to Breen’s call of the ridiculous Kobe shot..and he absolutely ruined it (just like he did for Wade’s circus finals shot..both were better than Jordan’s “spectacular move” shot..but Albert sold it much, much better – sometimes the announcers make the plays”. He paused..waits too long, and says “wowwwww, Speak[sic] of making plays Bryant banks it in.” He did this in the worst monotone nasally voice of all time. GET HIM OUT of championship games. The only thing worse would be to pair him with Doris Burke on the sidelines.
