Slam Magazine’s Top 50 NBA Players of All-Time
NBA June 17th. 2009, 12:30pm
Slam Magazine gets all listy in its June issue: The Top 50 players in NBA history. We stopped at 10 the other day … but it just so happens that our Top 10 are the same as Slam’s Top 10. Because it’ll piss some people off: LeBron’s at 42, ahead of Dominique Wilkins (43) and Steve Nash (50), but behind Clyde Drexler (39) and Allen Iverson (41). Hmmm.
Shaq’s 4th, Magic’s 6th, Kobe’s 12th, Kevin McHale’s 26th and Patrick Ewing is 36th. The full, highly subjective list after the jump.

LeBron still ranked way to fucking high.
FIRST!
June 17th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Wheres Bill?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Lebron over ‘Nique? Good thing i stopped reading Slam in middle school
June 17th, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Pearl Monroe behind McAdoo, Gervin, Cowens, Wilikns, Drexler and AI? Give me a fucking break.

Slam Magazine’s Top 50 NBA Players of All-Time*
*pre-2009 championship
June 17th, 2009 at 12:38 PM
I would leave Lebron off simply because there’s no way to know how we’ll remember him. There’s no point in including a current player unless their legacy is set and their career is winding down (like Kobe).
June 17th, 2009 at 12:39 PM
Im sure they factored in Kobe winning this year. Think pretty much everyone assumed they would win.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:40 PM
yeah i stopped reading slam when it tried to be street. hey yo! in mufuckin issure we gots the mad fresh kicks and the dopest baller on da planet! AI. it used to be had to have monthly reading for me with the Punks, great writing, mailbag(the responses we good). now i cant remember the last issue i read. also the little bottom line in the first 5 pages were good to
June 17th, 2009 at 12:40 PM
G-Man, I agree with what you’re saying, but with Iverson at 39, I mean, we already know Lebron’s legacy is set higher than that, so why leave him off the list simply because he’s going to do a lot more?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Not so sure Steve Nash should be on this list
June 17th, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Whats the difference between Reggie Miller and Clyde Drexler – besides one of them got to play with Hakeem and in the Bulls-less West?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:42 PM
jason kidd is way too high
June 17th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
Barkley at 20 is probably the weirdest. If Garnett didnt play another game wouldnt he be considered a better player?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
As I siad before, Elgin should be ahead of the logo…and where the ef is James Worthy?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:44 PM
how many MVps does he have again?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:45 PM
What about greg oden? he’s surely old enough to be on this list
June 17th, 2009 at 12:45 PM
I understand you point. It just seems kinda strange to rank a guy who will almost certainly continue his ascent into the top 10/15 at this point in his career. I think you could place him, I just wouldn’t want to because it’ll change so soon.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:47 PM
should be three but voters felt bad and gave his third to dirk
June 17th, 2009 at 12:51 PM
the fact that he has more MVPs than shaq,kobe,lebron,dwyane,kg,dirk,cp3,dwight howard, scottie pippen, charles barkley..i could go on and on but it just goes to show you how valuable that mvp award really is.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Did anybody list Elgin Baylor last week? Didn’t think so.
Unless I missed one, the first guy known primarily as a Knick comes in at #31.
/storied franchise’d
//and he’s only that high for one reason
June 17th, 2009 at 12:52 PM
Being awarded MVP means you’re a top 50 player?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Exactly!
June 17th, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Really?
June 17th, 2009 at 12:56 PM
*51-Kelly Tripuca
June 17th, 2009 at 12:56 PM
Gary Payton needs to be replaced with Lenny Wilkens. this isn’t the top 50 trash talking players
June 17th, 2009 at 12:58 PM
This touched my heart.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:58 PM
and where the hell is Bill Walton?
THROW IT DOWN BIG FELLA THROW IT DOWN
June 17th, 2009 at 1:01 PM
Maravich was better than him
/and Rodman
//unapologetic homer
June 17th, 2009 at 1:02 PM
getting his feet massaged
June 17th, 2009 at 1:02 PM
Gervin, ‘Nique and Monroe ranked in the 40’s??
Garnett ranked above Wes Unseld, thats funny.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:04 PM
Rick Barry > Doctor J.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:13 PM
from #31-50 there are 4 NY Knicks from their two Championship teams. Anybody know who’s not there???
McAdoo needs to be higher by at least 10 spots
June 17th, 2009 at 1:14 PM
As a Suns fan I would take Kevin Johnson over Steve Nash
June 17th, 2009 at 1:15 PM
Is he a senator?
June 17th, 2009 at 1:15 PM
@jpq- Dave D?
June 17th, 2009 at 1:16 PM
Is he a senator?
yes
also one is a coach
June 17th, 2009 at 1:16 PM
Rick Barry > Doctor J.
He’d tell you so.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:17 PM
how could lebron be over wade, wade has a ring, finals mvp, scoring title
June 17th, 2009 at 1:18 PM
Kevin Johnson? no way. I’ll be nice today and lay off the chester jokes
June 17th, 2009 at 1:19 PM
I sure as hell did.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:20 PM
Part of the deal was Wade had to give his ring to Bennett Salvatore
June 17th, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Heh, the banner ad I have right now on here is:
“Spend a 3-day getaway in Ohio”
June 17th, 2009 at 1:24 PM
Starting on two-championship teams is the criteria?
Where are Sam Cassell and Bill Laimbeer?
June 17th, 2009 at 1:28 PM
Kevin Johnson was the shit. but didn’t play enough.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:30 PM
I stopped reading after they had Shaq ahead of Magic. I hate lists, and this proves why.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:34 PM
My favorite list: NFL Network’s Top Ten Dallas Cowboys
Michael Irvin is #3, only behind Landry and Staubach
June 17th, 2009 at 1:35 PM
from #31-50 there are 4 NY Knicks from their two Championship teams.
Starting on two-championship teams is the criteria?
Jay: Actually just winning a championship in NYC is critical. They had the 4 guys listed, plus Dollar Bill, DeBusschere and Phil Jackson, and still only won two in 5 years
June 17th, 2009 at 1:37 PM
probably because he’s a better player. just a guess tho.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:39 PM
for some reason i like it when shaq called himself shaq oneal, i guess its because everyone calls him shaquille when they use his last name
June 17th, 2009 at 1:39 PM
What was the criteria for that?
June 17th, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Olajuwon was the shit.
/shamelss homer.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:41 PM
well if the criteria was overrated assholes who rode the best OL of all time to the hall of fame while the OL responsible for said success languishes in anonymity, troy aikman and emmitt would’ve been higher.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:41 PM
Where’s Gortat?
/duder
June 17th, 2009 at 1:45 PM
What was the criteria for that?
They said he was higher than Emmitt because he went to the Cardinals, so he’s a “truer” Cowboy. They also said he’s better than Aikman because Aikman didn’t throw a bunch of touchdowns. And then they said he was the “heart” of the team.
/so he’s the Derek Jeter of the NFL
//I’d have Aikman, Smith, Lilly, White, Dorsett, Jimmy Johnson, and Tex Schramm ahead of him for starters
///and I hate the Cowboys
June 17th, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Cocaine, crack, weed and prostitution arrests? It’s a sliding scale I’m sure. If coke and weed are involved, it garners less total points that a trifecta of coke, crack and a hooker.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:48 PM
When I consider who the best players of all time are – I think of who I would take first to start a franchise and consider that each one of these players is in their prime.
With that way of thinking, this list is completely off and I might be a LeBron homer but I would put him at around 16
June 17th, 2009 at 1:53 PM
My top player at their position are as follows:
SF Elgin Baylor 10 first team ALL-NBA selections
PF Tim Duncan 9 first team ALL-NBA selections
C Shaquille O’Neal 8 first team ALL-NBA selections
PG Magic Johnson 8 first team ALL-NBA selections
SG His Airness-MJ 10 first team ALL-NBA selections
Like someone stated earlier SLAM is a complete joke as far as being a true reference for NBA basketball information-n-knowledge IMO
June 17th, 2009 at 1:56 PM
Nothing says “truer Cowboy” or “heart of the team” than an oversized prima-donna with a monster ego who snorted blow, laid hundreds of women, then says he conveniently found Jesus, just in time to make up to the writers who wouldn’t put him in the HOF
/phony
June 17th, 2009 at 1:58 PM
And LeBron has already made my TOP FIVE all-time SF list
He has already led the league in scoring, League MVP and 5 ALL-NBA selections with 3 of those being First Team ALL-NBA along with his ALL-STAR accolades !!! LBJ is what, 24 years old right ???
TOP FIVE Small Forwards:
Elgin Baylor
Larry Bird
Scottie Pippen
Dominique Wilkins
LeBron James
June 17th, 2009 at 1:58 PM
Scoop Jackson was a major writer for SLAM. That’s really all you need to know.
June 17th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
Way to stir the pot again TBL Godfather — pageviews!
June 17th, 2009 at 3:21 PM
Normally this kind of thing get subjective at a certain point –I’ll say Bob Pettit downward here. He was always considered one of the top 10 ever, but now there’s nobody alive who’s actually seen him play — but Shaquille O’Neal as the fourth best ever? Really? He’s not even in my top 5 centers. He’s my #1 all time lazy guy. He’s my #1 all time guy who didn’t work hard enough. If he’d played as hard as he could his whole career, he’d have 11 titles. He’s not better than Wilt, Russell, Kareem, Olajuwon, Duncan or Moses Malone.
June 17th, 2009 at 3:24 PM
Whats the difference between Reggie Miller and Clyde Drexler – besides one of them got to play with Hakeem and in the Bulls-less West?
whatever yokel wrote this never saw Clyde Drexler play basketball.

It’s OBVIOUS that some people didn’t get the memo about HATE …
Hate-n-Hatred greatly clouds the vision of True Objectivity in Sports
June 17th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
As much as I respect Tim Duncan, he and Larry Legend need to switch places.
