Some Soccer Spot: To Advance, the USA Needs to Defeat Brazil
1-liner, Soccer June 18th. 2009, 9:20amUSA vs. Brazil: Use this space to discuss the game. If you’re unable to watch on TV, ESPN 360 should have it. Of note: Brazil is tired, so maybe the US has a chance! Don’t get too excited about a potentially leaky Brazil defense – those three goals are being blamed on jetlag. Grant Wahl’s USA player to watch: José Francisco Torres.

This Brazil team is coming together after struggling (for Brazil) for a few years… but I think the US has a chance. Still Brazil 2-1. I wish I could get nervous for this game…
June 18th, 2009 at 9:28 AM
Hopefully Brazil doesn’t have any American’s on the squad.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:37 AM
June 18th, 2009 at 9:39 AM
the game doesnt start until 10? WTF. major tease by espn. i could have sworn it was listed as 925 yesterday, and then 930 last night.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:41 AM
Actual soccer sites said 9:55
June 18th, 2009 at 9:44 AM
I don’t mind ESPN starting coverage 30 minutes early or whatever it will wind up being. Since they won’t have a 30 minute show talking soccer if it wasn’t tied to a game.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:49 AM
They only do it on deportes and ESPN doesn’t have any rights to good soccer hence no soccer show. They could easily have a half-way decent soccer show and replace jim rome with that or one of the million nfl lives that they do. I think the biggest problem is that league soccer runs through football, basketball and baseball seasons. Where are they going to find a time to cover a sport that they don’t even feature.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:50 AM
fucking DMB starts – skid marks all over the pitch as wingers smoke his ass.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:56 AM
Remember when DMB was a speedy, dangerous player on the left? I feel old saying that.
BTW, after last years EUROs and hearing all their anthems… the US along with Canada and Russia are like the only countries with anthems that would pump you up. We so take it for granted in that respect. Brazil’s sounds cheesier than you’d ever believe… like a 18th century French waltz.
June 18th, 2009 at 9:59 AM
Otter, add God Save the Queen to that small list.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:00 AM
I thought Beasley looked better against Italy, when he came off the bench, then he had the couple times previous.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:02 AM
dmb is a shadow of what he used to be. the body is beat and @ his position out wide its hard to hide.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:02 AM
I disagree about GStQ… it’s too much like a ditty (slow, slow, slow, slow, quickquick). Sure it’s got the brass but it lacks the critical cymbal crashes. Plus I’ve been brain washed by this.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:04 AM
One of the many great reasons I root for England
June 18th, 2009 at 10:05 AM
I think the weirdest thing about playing Brazil is how much more speed they have than the US. The United States not having enough speed… is it too late to make Vick and Hester soccer players?
June 18th, 2009 at 10:06 AM
Goal for Brazil after a shitting foul call.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:06 AM
Well you knew that was going to happen the moment the guy dived…
June 18th, 2009 at 10:07 AM
well that’s a fucking bullshit foul on bradley
spector just gets toasted
geez
1-0 brazil
June 18th, 2009 at 10:07 AM
Can I start watching Maury now?
/McKendry’d
June 18th, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Aren’t you in the new male or female episode, “chris”?
June 18th, 2009 at 10:09 AM
on the replay, it’s funny to watch spector grabbing the guy’s jersey – didn’t even bother him, just powered through and drilled the header home.
fucking joke of a defense
June 18th, 2009 at 10:11 AM
2nd no foul!
June 18th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
kaka just roasted #16
i feel for the guy
luckily, it only results in a corner …
June 18th, 2009 at 10:14 AM
Soccer and Hockey amaze me how one team can just dominate the game by keeping it in their opponent’s territory. I don’t think I have seen the US get set in offense once this game.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:15 AM
put friedel in
June 18th, 2009 at 10:16 AM
man the south africans need to get some more rhythm with those horns before the world cup.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:17 AM
Alright. What channel is this soccer madness on? Play suspended at the U.S. Open, thus live-blog suspended.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:19 AM
These guys are quick.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:19 AM
Brazil tired, my ass! Brazil looks sharper, quicker, and… oh my god the scored again! Made it llok easy!
June 18th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
let the bloodbath begin. 2-0 after brazil converts on a 3 on 1 break, started, of course, with a beasley turnover
June 18th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
Wow. I know this is like the second best team in the world at the moment, but we look like the Generals.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:21 AM
If I wanted to see this, I could just watch Baylor play football.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:22 AM
/fixed
June 18th, 2009 at 10:22 AM
What a nightmare this tournament is for US Soccer. Might be seeing a new coach after this trip?
June 18th, 2009 at 10:23 AM
In the history of international soccer, how many 3 on 1 breaks have ever occurred? Three? Was that the first? I’ve watched maybe 1% of soccer that I have of baseball, but I’ve never ever seen a 3 on 1 break… And thank you ESPN for pulling the plug.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:23 AM
there goes the world feed. awesome. by the time it comes back, us could be down 4-0
June 18th, 2009 at 10:24 AM
I thought about calling in sick today to watch golf and the US soccer tilt – looks like I made the right call by going to work (rain delays and ass-kicking/no feed)
June 18th, 2009 at 10:25 AM
game’s back on, whew
June 18th, 2009 at 10:25 AM
Game on!
June 18th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
I’m going to refrain from starting smack talk to keep this a futbol post. But feel free to go jump off your roof… even if you can’t do much damage from the top of a trailer.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:28 AM
Anyone else find it weird that the Guardian, which gets something like 60% of it’s traffic from the United States does do minute-by-minutes of US games? At least Cardillo’s live blogging.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Baylor will go to a bowl game this year.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Beasley is such garbage. He has no touch, and is not quick enough to make up for his poor touches.
/Hope he tears ACL for America’s sake.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:32 AM
Thanks for reminding me why I hate the “everyone’s a winner” bowl system.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:33 AM
Not only that, but they will be a top 25 team.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
Onyewu would have a hard time starting in my Sunday morning open men’s league. Dude is absolute dogshit as a defender.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:38 AM
PLSK – really? i think he’s their best defender right now who isn’t hurt. tough and fearless. the guys on the wings are a joke.
pablo’s got to be their best when healthy, right?
June 18th, 2009 at 10:38 AM
Against quick teams. Or most teams.
But I’d take his ass on my side in a brawl.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:39 AM
I just pulled up Baylor’s schedule:
The only sure wins I see are Northwestern State, Kent State, and Iowa State.
That means they have to beat A&M (on the road), UConn, and Wake Forest (on the road) just to be bowl eligible.
Good luck with that.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:39 AM
shit baylor should get one of the big 10’s spots in the bowls just so we can see robert griffith III.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:41 AM
i hope we see freddy adu in the 2nd half. play the young guys. this tournament is over. no shot at a comeback, bob
June 18th, 2009 at 10:41 AM
They will win all of these games. I can’t believe you lumped A&M in with those legitmate programs.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:41 AM
do you live in Brazil/Argentina/England/Germany/Spain/France?
June 18th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
For the few golf folks on here, the new USGA US Open iPhone app is pretty sweet. And free of course.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
PSU just announced an OOC opponent for 2011 – Indiana State
Admittedly, it’s the week before the trip to ‘Bama, but still.
/hangs head in shame
June 18th, 2009 at 10:44 AM
Clown, no way Baylor beats Wake on the road. They’ll have to pull an upset in the Big 12 to get in.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:47 AM
PLSK – really? i think he’s their best defender right now who isn’t hurt. tough and fearless. the guys on the wings are a joke.
pablo’s got to be their best when healthy, right?
The guy possess zero skill out of the back. He might be tough and fearless but poses as nothing but a liability in the end…….he’s more reckless than anything in my opinion. His distribution out of the back is awful and I dont think he shows any leadership, which in the end at his position is the most important thing.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:47 AM
Clown, no way Baylor beats Wake on the road. They'll have to pull an upset in the Big 12 to get in.If they don’t beat Wake they beat missouri
June 18th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
I wouldn’t, and would give them the win if they weren’t playing in College Station. I know Arkansas State beat them there last year. But the Aggies have been crap and still beat Texas in College Station, as recently as 2 years ago.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:49 AM
And even if they did get in, it would still be considered an upset if they came within 4 touchdowns of Texas or Oklahoma.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:53 AM
I’m telling you, Robert Griffin is the truth. I know Wake Forest is a top ten program, but Griffin didn’t do track this spring and he’s coming off a full season of Big XII competition.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:54 AM
Bob Bradley – thanks for a really great midfielder of a son. Now time for your ass to go. We could get embarrassed next year.
BTW, what are the chances the US draws North Korean and/or Iran in their Group for the World Cup?
June 18th, 2009 at 10:54 AM
Go ahead and sleep on Baylor folks, that’s fine. They will win 8 games this year. Griffin is that good, kendall Wright is that good, Jay Finley is good, Pawelek is one of the 3 or 4 best LBs in the country, and Art Briles is a DAMN good coach (and had recruited better at Baylor than anybody in ages).
June 18th, 2009 at 10:55 AM
Zero on Iran, because they got eliminated yesterday.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:55 AM
Wow, we’re good at soccer.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:56 AM
I cannot stress enough how much Baylor is going to surprise people this year (except, apparently, clown and myself).
June 18th, 2009 at 10:56 AM
Wonder if Indiana State had to agree to play two games in Happy Valley to one at home?
June 18th, 2009 at 10:59 AM
they are? har har har.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:01 AM
Connor Casey to save the day!
June 18th, 2009 at 11:01 AM
Zero on Iran, because they got eliminated yesterday.
Damn! Now THAT would be the Group of Death — Iran and North Korea.
Oh and before anyone says otherwise, North Korean press is already reporting they’ve won the 2010 World Cup thanks to 5 hat-tricks from Kim Jong-Il, who is also said to have given dating lessons to Cristiano Ronaldo (Lesson #1: Don’t sleep with Paris Hilton!)
June 18th, 2009 at 11:06 AM
The key games for Baylor will be against missouri and Texas Tech. Those are the conference games that can go either way. Maybe even the Nebraska game since it’s at home.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
US seems to at least be able to keep an attack going on Brazil’s side of the field.
/baby steps’d
June 18th, 2009 at 11:09 AM
what was that something.tv channel we watched the last game on? The Italy game
June 18th, 2009 at 11:10 AM
missouri is going to suck all sorts of peen this year.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
It’s tough to defend in the back without any size but somehow Brazil gets away with it year in and year out.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
No, because Indiana State realizes they are a shit program and will actually benefit by playing the game in State College.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:12 AM
Triston, agreed. Baylor is capable of beating all 3 of those teams. I know people are slow to recognize, but the talent gap has been closed QUICK by Briles. In 2010 and 2011, Baylor is going to be a legitimate national player. Nobody believed Mizzou was capable, nobody believed TT was capable of such things. Yet they happened.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:12 AM
That buzzing sound makes me want to kill someone. They need to get rid of that.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:13 AM
The goal for Baylor this season should be achieving mediocrity.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:13 AM
Off Chang’s live blog on ESPN
June 18th, 2009 at 11:14 AM
That buzzing sound makes me want to kill someone. They need to get rid of that.
FIFA is supposed to be talking about it, but it’s unlikely to change. They’re called Vuvuzelas and are to South Africa what the Thunderstix became a few years back.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
And now Kljestan gets a red card.
BTW, Brazil: beautiful soccer, but among the masters of the dive.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:16 AM
i will agree the buzzing sound is pretty awful.
Kljestan is the guy who got a red card. didnt see anything out of him today.
Benny in for Altidore.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:16 AM
Baylor would finish top 3 in the Big Ten this year.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:18 AM
bloodbath.
3-0 brazil.
great passing in the box
howard had no chance
geez, brazil is just so tactical
June 18th, 2009 at 11:19 AM
justin.tv?
June 18th, 2009 at 11:19 AM
That’s awful big of Joe Pa to allow Temple and Indiana State to benefit from playing in State College. High horses aside, it’s bullshit that Pitt and PSU haven’t played since 2000 and won’t until Paterno is no longer the coach. Which will be when he croaks up in the press box with his headset on.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Wow, United States soccer is a joke. They might as well field a team of North Carolina, Indiana, Maryland, and UCLA players and they would probably show more heart and compete. I didn’t have to be up this morning and i got up for this shit. Oi vey.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:21 AM
Baylor will be good, and Griffith is nasty, but let’s not get to ahead of ourselves. Not sure they’re ready this year- I’d target next.
And this tournament has been a disaster. Absolute disaster. Can we not keep our players on the field? We should know we’ll never get the close calls against top-10 national sides, but let’s cut out the stupid plays
June 18th, 2009 at 11:25 AM
geez, brazil is just so tactical
Yup, not only do they have the ball on a string and possess some of the best footwork in the world, but they can also play in small areas better than any team on the planet while not taking more than three touches for an extended period of time. United States is outclassed in every aspect. They haven’t even been physical with Brazil, which is the only way to beat this team. I might have to put the TV on mute with this buzzing, it’s killing me
June 18th, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Is it true that there was a parade in Waco last year to celebrate Baylor’s 4-8 season?
June 18th, 2009 at 11:28 AM
Jurgen Klinsmann should have been selected as coach. Hell, Klinsmann should be playing for us. Give that man a green card and sit Donovan’s ass.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:30 AM
I’ve had enough of this crap, time to buy some foreigners.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Didn’t he say that he didn’t want to coach the US? I’m not sure, this was after the last WC so it’s been a few years, but I seem to remember that he didn’t want the position.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:32 AM
this kid robinho has some of the best footwork ive seen lately
dempsey has looked good at times but as the announcer said, he keeps taking dives looking for calls. imagine if dempsey were tough
June 18th, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Exactly…screw the home grown movement, we need some (il))legal aliens on our team.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:39 AM
was that not a goal?????
June 18th, 2009 at 11:39 AM
I was checking my e-mail, but it sounds like the announcers thought the U.S. scored.
They didn’t though.
Oh well, back to blogging.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:41 AM
Spector is on West Ham? Does he play or is he just on the squad? I’ve been pretty impressed with him today.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:45 AM
dempsey needs more speed to blow around people after he uses his footwork to his adv
June 18th, 2009 at 11:46 AM
People might call Harkes a U.S. hater but the dude is dead on with all his points. He’s not a homer that’s for sure.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:48 AM
I was just going to say I like Harkes for telling it like it is.
June 18th, 2009 at 11:50 AM
It could be worse. Brazil could have played wearing hats.
