First Big Summer NBA Deal: Richard Jefferson Traded to the Spurs for Spare Parts
1-liner, NBA June 23rd. 2009, 1:35pm
Significant NBA Trade: The cost-cutting Milwaukee Bucks are a few dotted i’s and crossed t’s away from dealing occasionally-awesome SF Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs for – hold onto your hat – Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto. What a joke. This isn’t quite the Grizzlies handing the Lakers Pau Gasol on Feb. 1, 2008, but it’s significantly lopsided. Jefferson, when healthy, is a 20-point a night guy who can play multiple positions, is under 30, and brings NBA Finals experience. Here’s a potential end-game lineup for the Spurs: Parker, Manu, Jefferson, Mason, and Duncan. Did somebody like what they saw from the Magic playoffs? Hmmm. Four perimeter guys and Duncan. The Spurs ain’t dead yet. If you’re a Milwaukee fan, go ahead and slit your wrists – this probably means PG Ramon Sessions is going to get big money. [Yahoo Sports]

Didnt know you could trade spanish fabric. Must be some good shit.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:39 PM
i still cant believe the rockets traded richard jefferson for eddie griffin. wasted draft
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Hell yea especially since Eddie Griffin is dead.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:42 PM
He was good in Undercover Brother but not much recently
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:42 PM
So no Undercover Brother 2?
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:43 PM
Yeah except duncan actually has low post moves
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:43 PM
RJ sucks.
/legally obligated to say that
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:44 PM
I think it might be just as bad.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:45 PM
If you’re a Milwaukee fan, go ahead and slit your wrists – this probably means PG Ramon Sessions is going to get big money
if I didn’t think the crew was going to be competitive, I would have bought a lot of stock in Exacto blades last March…
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:45 PM
LOL
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:46 PM
the Bucks are going to back up the brinks for CV and sessions. awesome. 30 wins, if that.
michael redd needs to throw shit and demand a trade
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:48 PM
if any team is going to fold, the bucks are a prime candidate
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 PM
sessions is another Ford/Mo Williams bad idea: give them big money, and then find out they’re not worth it, and then trade them.
who the F is running the show there?
if bill simmons can campaign for the t-wolves GM job, can i put my hat in the ring for the bucks job?
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 PM
Yeah except duncan actually has low post moves
yeah i would say so after 12 years in the league
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 PM
If you’re a Milwaukee fan
How bout dem Brewers?
….ohhh….
Ok, ok, ready for da Pack and Brett?!
…..oh yeaaahhhh….
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 PM
Popovich and RC Buford have always looked up to SVG and Otis Smith for their lengthy list of accomplishments.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 PM
Different Eddie Griffin. I think this one may have jerked off to Undercover Brother in his SUV at the time of his death.

Was just going to ask if Michael Redd goes anywhere. But aren’t they paying him more than the Celtics are paying KG?
That contract will be like moving the Harold’s Chicken Shack out of my neighborhood.

adios bucks and grizzlies. how’s that? one from each league, 28 teams, 14 in each conf.
take the draft order and ration their players.
1. redd
2. mayo
3. gay
4. bogut
5. conley
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:51 PM
thanks god because if there was anything the spurs need it was experience on how to lose in the nba finals.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:52 PM
except he got hit with a fucking train in his car
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:53 PM
I’ll take Mayo and Gay over Redd. Redd has injury history, massive contract, and motivation issues.
Mayo is young, playing for that next big contract. Gay has shown he can play.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:53 PM
What has to happen in MLB for it to get a post?

June 23rd, 2009 at 1:54 PM
If you think Mo has a bad contract, then you better think 95% of the league has a bad contract, too. Which it’s fine to think that, but at least admit it.
That was a pure salary dump move, because the team had no chance to compete.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:55 PM

Or, the 102 names come out.

June 23rd, 2009 at 1:58 PM
At least the Bucks will do something with the cap space. (Probably)
The Grizzlies had no reason, other than being cheap and employing the worst GM around.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:58 PM
and michael redd just died a little more inside…
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:58 PM
Simmons actually campaigned for the Bucks job when it was open. Then he turned to the t-wolves this year.

The NBA needs to cut back the schedule by 15-20 games and cut at least 2 teams. Of course none of this will happen.

Do you think the NBA is better off with the Grizzlies and the Bobcats? I also think the season is too long, but I think that of all leagues save the NFL.

TBL, no offense but you would do no better than the guys running the show for the Bucks. Your team would consist of Telfair, Odoms and anyone else who had any hype, ever.

June 23rd, 2009 at 2:17 PM
Does he seriously smoke weed? Good for him.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:21 PM
While in East Lansing, he was arrested and charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. The cocaine charge was dropped when Skiles pleaded guilty to the marijuana possession. He was arrested and charged with drunken driving a year later and served 15 days in jail. During his senior season, Skiles committed a parole violation on an earlier marijuana conviction, and served a brief jail sentence.[
From Wiki. Skiles might have sold Joakim Noah his pot. Can’t believe he got to play along side Shaq, Penny, Nick Anderson and Horace “The General” Grant.

at the risk of killing the bball talk: How would some of you feel if i just randomly eliminated commenters who weren’t funny/did nothing for the discussion/brought the same joke every time to every post?
I talked to a couple of people about it, and ive sent an email CRM/Hernia … i just feel like the same people are always bringing the same, dorky, lame, unfunny shit, and sometimes it’s painful to read the comments. i’d much rather have 10 good funny/insightful comments on a post over 50 that are forced/lame/same shit over and over and over.
summer’s the time to tinker … email me if you dont want to post your thoughts here.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:26 PM
that’s funny, since i regularly mock Telfair here. i’d give ariza a bigger deal this summer than odom.

You are going to ban commenters?!? That works out real well *cough* Deadspin *cough*. Wow, that is amusing. I wonder how that will affect your page views… I am willing to bet alot of people come here to comment freely rather than to see fourteen posts on Sean Avery and how he looks in his new Rock Star jeans. Just sayin’
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 PM
Yes. Anyone bringing up hats or hakeem nicks or the return of the PM round up. Maybe funny for a thread or two, but not 40.
/I rarely comment, but when I do, I prefer to not bring up old shit.

JPQ- I was actually thinking about the traffic ramifications for them and other blogs if a TBL commenter ban was put in place.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:39 PM
the best part is that somewhere out there, winners are monitoring this comment section
this would only impact a small # of people, and if you asked, no, you’re not on the list.

June 23rd, 2009 at 2:51 PM
JPQ- I was actually thinking about the traffic ramifications for them and other blogs if a TBL commenter ban was put in place.
@ruck: I know. I was just making a joke. (Might be one of my last). I agree with pretty much everybody on this: TBL can do whatever he wants, but when he says recently that only about 1% of the visitors post comments, that tells me they ENJOY the comments. I can’t imagine they come here for “breaking news”. They would go to ESPN/Yahoo/whatever.
This site, like I said before, is like McDonalds, and I mean that in a good way. There are a lot of different offerings for a lot of different tastes, the menu changes frequently, and stays open late. It isn’t Morton’s Steakhouse, but who wants that all the time?
TBL may be at that point that a lot of blogs get to: started this on a semi-lark, to see if I can make it viable. He has accomplished that, so, where do you go from here? Acquisition? If so, he may want to “clean up the content” so that it fits a respectable entity like ESPN/Fox/Yahoo/AOL that might think of buying/partnering with him, ala PFT and NBC.
I like the site, and have felt free to say things like I just did in the past. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut. I’ll find out if I can’t log in some day, I guess.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:51 PM
If running jokes aren’t funny, then PLEASE, ban my ass.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:52 PM
I will agree with this. It’s TBL’s real estate and if he wants to get that off his lawn, it’s cool. Besides, you can find an afternoon link dump at other sites.
Only 1/4 of that is self-promotion so lay off!
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:52 PM

purdue matt’s workplace – along with many others – have banned TBL from the viewing list. i dont know how or why we’ve gotten lumped into that category, but such is life.
one guy – who will remain nameless – buddied up with his IT guy in an effort to lift the ban. i dont know if it’s the language or NSFW links
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:57 PM
I just want a week’s worth of college football posts. My head would explode if TBL lined up a Tony Barnhart interview that coincided with 20 posts on college footbal over a week-long period.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:57 PM
This is the plot of “Semi-Pro”. TBL is Jackie Moon.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:57 PM
irish is right. More NBA posts so we can officially beat this Hakeem Nicks thing into the ground. Also, Kobe v. LeBron. Discuss.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:57 PM
so, speaking of banning people, does Milwaukee even keep Bruce Bowen for five minutes? It seems like they buy him out in a millisecond, and he ends up back for one more season or retirement in San Antonio.
Plus, if they are giving away Manu’s countymen, who is to say they’re bringing him back in the summer of 2010. They’ve got cap room, especially without resigning him. They can make a run at somebody top of the line.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:58 PM
I’m not gonna do what everyone thinks I’m gonna do and… FLIP OUT man… all I wanna know is one thing… who’s coming with me?

It’s the lack of production caused by reading this site and it’s amazing comments.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:59 PM
Amen. Barnhart’s awesome. Do you live in Atlanta, Gods? Thursdays in the fall from 11-1 on 790 the Zone are the best two hours of radio on earth if you like college football. Barnhart and Wes Durham. Simply awesome.

GOG- I bet with the 2M page views (media kit’d) that this place gets, there’s enough alums of major Universities to get a preview of all the BCS schools. Not all of us are gifted with the pen/keyboard, but it’s an idea.

June 23rd, 2009 at 3:06 PM
@TBL – Bowen is owed $5M and Thomas is owed a little under $9M. Do you think those guys would really give up that kind of cash? Especially since it’s the highest they would be paid in their careers.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:06 PM
I have lived here for 13 years now. Barnhart is awesome…such a good read because he is a fan. I don’t listen to am radio because my car antenna is a piece of shit.

June 23rd, 2009 at 3:08 PM
Didn’t mean it as a dig at you. More towards so many NBA posts for a season that is a long ways away. Then again, it’s summer so there’s not a whole hell of a lot going on.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:08 PM
what if …
thomas retires
oberto goes to his homeland to play
bowen retires
that’s what bucks best case, prolly
that is a quality scenario for a team that probably couldn’t sell any tickets either way. I was just reading how the deal saved them quite a bit of scratch already, and how Oberto’s deal isn’t even fully guaranteed. I doubt Bowen is going to play for a loser (and I doubt Milwaukee needs a 3 points shooter to stand in a corner as they have Redd).
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:08 PM
In my opinion, I think banning commentators for lame/recurring jokes is a bad idea because it drives the comments in a direction that only you want, which defeats the whole purpose of having comments in the first place.
But it is your site, so you’re free to do with what you please.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:10 PM
In my opinion, I think banning commentators for lame/recurring jokes is a bad idea
you’re banned!
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:10 PM
jpq…iowa has been relevant more recently than purdue.
but ya’ll both suck. go bucks. eat it.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:10 PM
Thomas is owed only $3.8 from what I see. The Bucks should just buy out those guys. They’d be great additions for cap-strapped teams like the Celtics and Lakers.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:11 PM
SI.com just got shut down for me, the dns blocker classifies it as sports and bikini/lingerie. It is such a joke, I am waiting for this site to get pegged because of the pics of girls.
I swear I heard a way around this a while back, but haven’t had the time to see if there is a way to load the page inside a different website.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:12 PM
so has Michigan State. wow, that doesn’t happen often.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:12 PM
Oh Jefferson to the Spurs gives them another title for sure. Actually extends Duncan’s career a little bit. Parker becomes one of the most dangerous pg’s in the league.

/lame/recurring joke at expense of intern Bill
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:14 PM
jpq and spence – yup, I’m a Hawkeye. In basketball we haven’t been relevant since Pierce raped that girl in the negative sense and since Tom Davis was the coach in the positive. The football team is solid and the additions on Kinnick are amazing. But, Kirk is really fouling up a lot things there right now. His own kid get arrested, players with OWIs etc. I’m not a native Iowan but those people do not stand for that kind of stuff. He’s got about 2 seasons to compete for a Big Ten title or his $1.2M salary is going to be a budget cut.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:17 PM
Every NBA team will want Kurt Thomas. He fills minutes in the post. His movement cold be part of the deal that send Michael Redd (with Thomas) to the Cavs for the Wallace contract.
I just thought of that. That would save the Bucks even more, even easier.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:19 PM
Everybody Loves Raymond lasted about 10 seasons.

June 23rd, 2009 at 3:21 PM
Take’s asshole hat off….
It’s because people keep refreshing the page, most likely to keep reading the comments…At my job my IT guy came and talked to me because I constantly refreshed MLJ, You, Metsblog and Neil Best..I was told that they monitor over usage and they would turn off the site. Now I had a choice, keep doing it and get cut off, stop commenting so much and hopefully go back under the radar or beg…since we are making 18 cents a week I frequent my own blog (but can’t access any video) so other comment sections I stopped completely (Metsblog and Newsday) others I do a “drive by” but the more and more you refresh the page, IT departments will start to ban that blog. They claim bandwidth but it is about work productivity. That and a hatred for hats. (I put the asshole hat back on for that line)

June 23rd, 2009 at 3:27 PM
I wholeheartedly support this, even though it goes against the fairly open discussion thing you’ve got here, it needs to be done. For every idiot you remove two readers who are hesitant to comment will step in.
Not you’re content, banning single sites is far too granular, no one goes to those lengths. There’s a tag on every page you serve up that shows your content is WordPress, so its easy enough to create a rule to just ban WordPress sites.

I am also pro banning. It’s maybe 4 guys only though, so it’s not like a wholesale thing, I’m guessing.
I’m also guessing that one legendary banning has already taken place, because weekends here aren’t quite so shitty. They are deader than fried chicken, just not deader than fried chicken because everybody backed slowly away.
I am for new commenters being allowed to come in and be welcomed. That’s how I got here. I visited the site, came back, eventually read the comments, finally got up the nerve to say my piece, and then wasn’t treated like a complete dick, or made the butt of an in joke. That all came later.

Does this have anything to do with MArk Cuban ripping sports blogs?
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:37 PM
irish: I think maybe more from this weekend.
Unfortunately, it looks like the world is ending outside, so I am out of here until this mini-hurricane blows over so can’t go into it
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:40 PM
Didn’t TBL just recently add like 75 commenters during the playoffs? Now he’s trimming?

June 23rd, 2009 at 3:49 PM
@Bo- that is nuts. too hot for that
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:51 PM
What happened this weekend?
I was here all weekend (as I never go anywhere, and make my wife work 3 jobs), and whatever it was, it was relatively minor. What I think it was has already been scrubbed clean, which is why i think it was that. What I think it was though, I didn’t even totally understand, as it predates my participation in the site.
I think the banning starts with one guy and will be expanded from there to include a couple more, so as not to single the one guy out.
I know who I hope is on the list, but we’ll see.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:51 PM
Thats a lie. His family was with him. Who started that?
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:56 PM
Wow, that was the worst explaination in the history of explainations…
So in English this time, what happened this weekend?

One guy, who’s a whiny bitch continued to talk about a long forgotten incident even after TBL said to stop. So TBL deleted his comment. Then, the same crybaby kept bringing up his deleted comment in other posts. TBL also deleted all of those.
As for the original incident, I’m clueless. I was being vague before on purpose.

I’ve never heard of two of those guys, but the other one was a recent and welcome banning, I’m pretty sure. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been very fun to watch the NBA finals and comment here.
June 23rd, 2009 at 4:37 PM
just copy spencers comment 107 and paste it for me. I have too much pride to say that myself.
June 23rd, 2009 at 4:38 PM
It is 108 here, no index required
June 23rd, 2009 at 4:49 PM
I agree that this place has too many commenters that resort to unfunny meme’s all the time. I’ve resorted to it myself, but that was just me tryin’ to get ahead. /Hernia’d. I’d be willing to stop though if it meant I couldn’t comment anymore. Otherwise I’d probably just kick the dirt and go home.

Not only do I not like the commenters here, I don’t even like the site. The best part is when I comment.

summer weekends = beach, not much sports going on, but CRM and Hernia still kill it. i will chip in a few weekends now that im down to just one more wedding and two more trips.
i suspect things will pick up in aug when college football and the NFL ramp up.

I think John Hammond knows what he’s doing, but the number one problem with the Bucks is the owner. Herbie has done his best to sink a once-proud franchise into enduring lameness. The Bucks need their own Mark Attanasio.
