LeBatard and Simmons Together Again: Last Week’s Podcast Was Altered; LeBatard’s PTI Suspension
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings June 23rd. 2009, 4:30pm
Last week, it sounded to us like maybe a Dan LeBatard-Bill Simmons podcast about Jason Whitlock and ESPN had been edited to shorten the discussion of Whitlock … and now it’s been confirmed. In a pretty wide-ranging interview Simmons did on LeBatard’s radio show in Miami last week, the two candidly discussed ESPN at length, and LeBatard revealed that he was suspended from PTI when he opined that the Bobby Knight movie was a “mountain of elephant crap.”
The good stuff begins about 2/3 of the way through:
LeBatard: “ESPN does a million things well, but we talked about something at the beginning [of the podcast] for the first 10 mins … [about] ESPN not being very good with being criticized, and how unbecoming I find that … they cut out 10 minutes of the conversation!”
(Laughter from Simmons)
LeBatard: “They cut out 10 minutes of our talk about Joe Buck, and they only left in the part where we talked about 30/30 [ESPN summer fare]. That’s unbelievable that they did that!”
Simmons: [Jokingly stammering] “Ahhhh, errr, yeah. Well … I guess their thinking was that it was an hour long podcast …”
LeBatard: “Why are you doing the tapdance? Why are you doing the stammering tapdance? You’ve got problems with authority, you’re a rebel … you’re an anarchist …”
Simmons: [phone making noise]
LeBatard: “What, are you pretending your phone is creeping out?”
Simmons: “I think they’re tampering with it!”
LeBatard: “He doesn’t like this conversation and I understand why he doesn’t like it … but come on, Bill, it’s your podcast … we weren’t ripping ESPN, we were talking honestly about media criticism… ESPN should be covered like a sports team, it’s that kind of brand.”
Simmons: “I guess the thinking was that I covered a lot of the this on podcasts before … I didn’t totally have a problem with it because i had already had a lot of that conversation previously … it’s a big company, it’s going to do a lot of good things and a lot of bad things.”
[LeBatard's partner in crime]: “… come on, rip ‘em!”
Lebatard: “He won’t do it.”
[Later in the conversation]
Simmons: “Would you have talked about that PTI?”
LeBatard: “I got suspended from PTI for calling the Bobby Knight movie a mountain of elephant crap.”
Simmons: “REALLY?”
Lebatard closed with: “I love the company. I just dont think anyone is perfect. And I think there’s an inherent hypocrisy with ESPN being totally OK criticizing everyone else, but [essentially saying] don’t do it to us from inside the building.”
If LeBatard gets suspended for any of this – unlikely, but you never know – can we put in a request for some fresh PTI (read: anyone) meat besides the usual backup tandem of Bob Ryan and JA Adande?

For all the rebelling against the establishment Simmons did a few months ago, he’s sure become the company man lately. If you listened to his last podcast on Adam Carolla, he kept talking about getting fired for Carolla talking about porn.

I hate when Bob Ryan is on there.

Hey you assholes why dont we trade jobs. You ungrateful pricks. I hope you all get fired and replaced with…you guessed it. Hakeem Nicks.

You mean media outlets edit content and filter what gets through to watchers/listeners/readers? Who would do such a thing?

Yes, he was being cautious to ensure his rewarding, lucrative career stays intact to support his family. What an asshole.
I’m sure by the time his two kids are of age colleges will accept “street cred” from bloggers in lieu of cash for tuition payments.

He wasn’t being so cautious a few months ago Ty. I think the point is he suddenly changed his tune. A few months he regularly served up backhanded comments and openly complained about the way his material was edited but now he’s falling over himself to make excuses for them. I understand the financial reasoning for it, but he does not have to sacrifice his integrity to the high altar of the WWL just because they increased his payday.

tampa, good point wandering bear. I’ve noticed that I’ve done it recently… although first 6,000 times the joke was funny, that’s all I’m saying.
I’m also beginning to think that the median age here on this blog is around 22.
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:29 PM
haha my bad. I was away from the computer for the last 3-4 hours. Forgot to check my RSS feed. I deserve the jokes for this one.
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Don’t know why you’re getting so defensive. I didn’t say it was a bad thing. It was just an observation. Tyduffy, are you going to be TBL’s enforcer for comment regulations going forward?
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:33 PM
i love how everyone acts like if their employers came up to them and said “hey if you knock off the criticism we will give you a fat fucking raise” they would just say “fuck you man! im never selling out!” when in fact they would roll over faster than left eye’s SUV
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:33 PM

Mrejr8234, I’m willing to bet that you and I work in a somewhat different environment than Bill Simmons. His job is solely about creativity and presenting, in an entertaining manner, new ideas while appealing to a certain spectrum of the sports audience (those obsessed with 80s movies mostly). When the employer starts infringing upon that creativity because they are overly sensitive to criticism or simply do not like the ideas which are put forth, then I think a person should complain and point out that fact in order to retain the integrity of the column. Hearing the company line over and over again is stale, unentertaining, and insults the readers intelligence (which is a relative value for most of Simmons’ readers, but the point remains).
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:50 PM
gfunk, I know what it means. It was just for the sake of a cheap shot.
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:59 PM
I don’t get why ESPN even bothers. What, so a couple of their employees make a few valid criticisms about the company and their entire brand is going to collapse? They act like the mafia.
June 23rd, 2009 at 6:09 PM
what the fuck happened to cnnsi? theres no reason why espn should have a monopoly on sports. FSN sucks donkey dick.
June 23rd, 2009 at 6:16 PM
Color me cynical, but Simmons doesn’t want to criticize ESPN before his book comes out. He needs them for promotion and sales so I’m guessing he says nothing controversial for the next few months. Last thing he needs is a suspension when he can be plugging weekly/daily with his podcast and column.
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:00 PM
they don’t. there’s this thing called the internet where you can get loads more information and highlights than bspn can ever provide.

HMMM….I think we may be on to something. Add in the fact that ESPN Books (or ESPN “The Press” or whatever it’s called) is publishing the book, it seems that it is in Simmons’ interest to play nice for a little while.
(Qualifier: I am a Simmons fan. Sure, I think he’s lost his fastball a bit since his 2003-2005-ish heyday, but I thoroughly enjoy his podcasts….almost alway solid listening.)

Nothing new here really — right or not you can’t just bite the hand that feeds you even in the media …which of course leads me to the point that the future is in blogs, because WE participate in the news for US, not for them for mere dollars, and cover it more accurately.
Again, this is why he’s the Godfather folks and has a team of guys who have taken oaths in blood, but again as most of you should know by know, the rest of it is classified.
June 24th, 2009 at 1:10 AM
TBL Godfather your enterprising spirit is to be admired again, but did you forget with whom you are dealing here in Bristol? The answer is a resounding “FUCK NO!” because they must choose two metrosexuals, a metrosexual and a press codger, a metrosexual and a wus(Bayless), or a metrosexual and a ninnie (sigh a “he said she said transformation” …) They will tell you “FUCK YOU” so just fuck ‘em and forget it again.
