David Kahn, New GM of the Timberwolves: A Toxic Blend of Isiah Thomas and Chris Wallace
NBA, NBA Draft June 26th. 2009, 10:00am
We could understand the firing of Kevin McHale. The stockpiling of draft picks – while parting with the team’s best backcourt scorer – was beyond questionable. And then, in what ESPN’s Chad Ford called “one of the all-time, mind-boggling moves in draft history,” Minnesota drafted two pure point guards at 5 and 6. Within an hour, Ricky Rubio’s agent was begging the T-Wolves to deal him to the Knicks; his parents applied pressure by saying Rubio could return to Spain for 1-2 years. The team’s twittering star, Kevin Love, had hoped the team would go with Davidson’s Stephen Curry.
Don’t be surprised to see Rubio’s agent, Dan Fegan, put pressure on his media buddies to all hammer the Wolves for the pick, possibly driving that coveted trade. The backlash to Kahn’s clumsiness was captured greatly here:
Bill Simmons: “5:11: I’m in “Star Trek II” mode right now. “Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahn!!!!!!” So stupid. I’m never trusting a guy who worked as a TV consultant, a sports writer and a stadium campaign organizer to run an NBA team again.”
Brash Brandon Jennings, who supposedly outplayed Flynn at a Golden State workout, was puzzled, too. It’s nothing against Jonny Flynn; it just makes zero sense. Both are dominate-the-ball PGs. Just a guess, but he won’t be in the NBA next season.
Some other first-round ruminations:
* Chad Ford had Jrue Holiday at 4 to the Kings for weeks. He was probably listening to Holiday’s agent (Fegan) too much; Holiday fell to the 76ers at 17. We’re indifferent about the pick. But shamelessly, here’s what we had the Kings doing the day after the lottery. Squirrel, nut, etc, Part I.
* When the NBA regular season was near completion, we attempted to project at the lottery. Four of those kid stayed in college.
* The least intelligent interview on ESPN last night – Jordan Hill of the Knicks.
* Lucky: Ty Lawson goes to Denver to learn from Chauncey Billups and play in an up-tempo offense.
* As bad as the Bucks have drafted, we’re bullish on the Jennings pick. And Jodie Meeks in the 2nd round is a nice grab.

Fuck Ricky Rubio. Go where you’re drafted or stay in Europe. He’s not anywhere near good enough to try to play teams against each other and play where he wants.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:05 AM
remember to be consistent, Nick (re: Eli Manning)
June 26th, 2009 at 10:08 AM
I held the same opinion. The Chargers were able to get a huge package for him.
Maybe the Wolves will be able to do the same.

The least intelligent interview on ESPN last night
Shaq. Mental conversations
I cant get over how bad Stu Scott was last night. Holy shit. Jeff Van Gundy did a great job as always
June 26th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
I read through Simmons’ ‘diary’ this morning and his obsession with Rubio is off the charts, pretty creepy. Though the killing on Jennings showing up late was hilarious.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:14 AM
TBL two months ago: “I’m not a Simmons guy.”
TBL for the subsequent two months : “Bill Simmons (slurp!)”
June 26th, 2009 at 10:16 AM
The way the network talks about him, you’d swear he was a Scott Boras client.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:18 AM
Blair is being “politely” 2nd-guessed in the local papers. The P-G noted at least 7 different F/C’s went ahead of him, including a few “who the hell are these guys?”.
That being said, SA is probably a good fit for him, since he can fill the role left by Kurt Thomas, etc. as a rebounder/interior defender. They aren’t going to need him to score much, if at all. Maybe Duncan can show him some fundamentals at the offensive end.

Dirt – May be difficult to believe, but i knew Simmons would kill Kahn, so i opened the column and did a search for kahn. didnt read it (though i might later).
and if simmons is making news, yeah, there will be posts about him
June 26th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
irish, did you see that Hedo is likely not happening now?
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/basketball/magic/orl-bk-magic-trade-for-carter-062509,0,3371112.story
out: Hedo, maybe Gortat, Lee, Battie, Alston
in: VC
ummm
June 26th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
If he doesn’t play for the wolves, and they don’t trade him, how long is he property of the Wolves? How long before other teams can officially sign him without having to deal with the Wolves?
June 26th, 2009 at 10:22 AM

just giving you hell. I think simmons is 100% relevant.

Where did Hakeem Nicks go in the draft?
/that’s a bannin’
June 26th, 2009 at 10:24 AM
@TBL- like i said yesterday, we will know more after July 1st. We already know he is opting out. I personally do not think he is worth the type of money he wants(4 years /$44 mill). He had his best year in 2007-2008. MJOT even said himself he became “Turkoglu” here in Orlando. If he wants to compete for a title, he will try to resign with Orlando.
even he if leaves, we will still have one of the best teams in the league
June 26th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
Good point — Simmons ripping on the T-wolves GM is news. But you need a ticker or a siren or something when news like that breaks.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
and dont forget Ryan Anderson TBL. He came with Vince. young PF from Cal. picked 21 right ahead of C Lee at 22 last year
June 26th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
Slightly ot/
I still find it crazy that the Chargers assembled all this talent with draft picks and Philip Rivers for Eli Manning after Eli didn’t want to play there, and Eli not only got what he wanted, he ends up winning a super bowl. There is something weird and unfair about that. I don’t know where I was going with this. I just wanted to talk about football.
/End slight o/t
June 26th, 2009 at 10:27 AM
what teams have expressed interest in hedo?
June 26th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
@TBL- does this mean no BLOCKBUSTER TRADE post for Vinsanity?
Portland and Toronto is all i have heard
June 26th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
ving – i think Dirt was referring to the podcasts, lebatard, and the Dunleavy, not this pull quote
June 26th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
SportsCenter is just trying to fan the flames on the Darko trade, and that’s just necessary. In fact, it’s irresponsible.
For every trade, even involving shitty players, they manage to find a highlight or two. This is everything they showed for Darko in their story:
1. Darko getting a shot blocked
2. Darko getting dunked on
3. Darko missing a layup
I guess if ESPN did a story on Michael Jackson they’d just show the clip of him hanging his baby off the balcony.
ESPN has already decided that the Darko trade is a miserable failure. That is likely to turn out to be true, but that is uncalled for.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:30 AM
no VC post, irish.
nice late pick: Patty MIlls to portland
June 26th, 2009 at 10:32 AM
figures. At least you called the Cavs frauds yesterday. that kind of makes up for it
June 26th, 2009 at 10:33 AM
Dont see how they can even entertain signing Hedo, here is the total committed to just 3 Orl players, Dwight, Rashard, Carter:
09-10 – 48 mil
10-11 – 52 mil
11-12 – 57 mil
Upwards of 90% of the cap to just those 3.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:34 AM
So, Rubio’s agent thinks Rubio went too high? Fuck Rubio.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
no VC post, irish.
It would turn in to a Cleveland post after one comment, anyway.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
And what’s the cap at right now 58.7, I don;t think Orlando minds paying luxury tax though right. Didn’t ownership say they were going to open up the pocketbooks
June 26th, 2009 at 10:36 AM
@coop- such a good comment you had to repost it eh? I guess you didnt hear that the Magic were already willing to pay the luxury tax. Maybe all your hate got in the way of reading that news. and this move is a cheaper option than re-signing Hedo.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:39 AM
I’m a bit in shock that the Nuggets did somthing in a draft to get a player. Usually they just trade away picks.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
So 3 years at 51 mil of lazy VC > 4 years 44 mill Hedo?
Interesting math.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
fuck joe dumars. kill me.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Why not just contract all the teams in the middle of America? No one wants to play there. They can’t lure free agents and any top pick demands to be traded or flees as soon as their initial contract is up.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
No kill him. You should really be pissed. Pistons should have been the team of the freaking decade. I’ve never seen someone tear down such a good team with such incompetence. It’s like the anti-spurs.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
As for the Magic, this ends up being a cheaper option than re-signing Turkoglu, because they dropped about $13 million in salaries to pick up $17 million from the Nets. Presumably, Orlando will now let him walk as a free agent and promote Mickael Pietrus to the starting small forward spot, with J.J. Redick becoming the sixth man. The Magic can use some of the savings to re-sign Gortat, whose presence becomes more important now that Battie is gone
another swing and a miss Coop. And what is the salary for the Cavs back-up center?
June 26th, 2009 at 10:44 AM
Or just have an NBA finals involving the knicks and lakers in june and call that the nba season!!!
/At this point, I think I would actually like that option
June 26th, 2009 at 10:46 AM
I’m leaning toward Irish in this battle. You get a couple of seasons of Vince not being worried about $$$, as opposed to Hedo Turkoglu who is looking for that last big payday.
Plus, Vince isn’t the #1 banana. And he loves to sit outside the 3 point line and bomb them.
At the same time, man I hate Vince Carter. I’m sure Irish did too, until about 4pm yesterday.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:46 AM
I just read Simmons’ diary and I love the fawning over Rubio and Curry. Sports Basketball Expert Guy hasn’t been this hyped up since he compared this year’s Cavs to the ‘91 Bulls. I’m sure he’ll just blame the coaches when they end up at Bust City.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
I’m sure Irish did too, until about 4pm yesterday
never hated Vince. If you remember, i took your comment and added Jerry Stackhouse. All i said was he lost Game 7 with the Raptors after attending his college graduation
June 26th, 2009 at 10:49 AM
Jersey- unless he thinks he can make a major trade and nail a FA acquisition, his draft picks made zero sense. blows my mind that he took summers over young in the 2nd round.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:58 AM
Vince not worried about money is a good thing???
June 26th, 2009 at 11:01 AM
sparty- Him turning down that rondo allen trade was the most retarded thing I’ve ever seen. He is clearly blowing up the team, but doesn’t want to take two guys with expiring deals that are STILL good players. Just retarded. I said it late last night, the collective IQ of nba GMS continues to astound me with their incompetence.
June 26th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
Vince not worried about money is a good thing???
maybe he’ll chase a ring, since he’s got 51 mill coming, and he doesn’t have to worry for a couple of years. That last payday he had was a big payday.
on second thought… I withdraw the statement.
June 26th, 2009 at 11:09 AM
Vince Carter on a title contender is most likely different than Vince Carter on a team that squeaks into the playoffs or doesn’t make the playoffs.
June 26th, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Vince not worried about money is a good thing???
Vince will save $1 million on his taxes this year!!
June 26th, 2009 at 11:24 AM
I think Vince is of the I’m getting paid I have nothing to play for ilk. But he’s home, he has good players around him, he’s in a crappy division, and he has a legitimate chance at getting a ring. I think he goes off this year. He actually played pretty well for the Nets last year in a season where he knew they weren’t gonna be great. D-Ho still needs some great low post move. Not a typo.
June 26th, 2009 at 11:38 AM
TBL – “irish, did you see that Hedo is likely not happening now?”
Wasn’t the trade a great big flag waving that the Magic do not think they can keep Hedo? Who in their right mind would do this trade if they thought they had the slightest hope of holding onto Hedo? The only possible explanation is that they know he’s gone and they panicked.
June 26th, 2009 at 11:41 AM
they panicked
???
June 26th, 2009 at 11:43 AM
Carter is a much better player than Turkoglu: Carter is deadlier on the drive and more potent from outside, and he’s a better defender to boot. The Magic can put out a starting lineup of four All-Stars and Pietrus, and the amazing shooting ability should not only open space for Howard but provide plenty of creases for Carter as well
This trade is better than the Shaq trade
June 26th, 2009 at 12:39 PM
It’s more important the magic go after resigning Gortat now than Turk, like Irish has said Turk has been terribly inconsistent in the first 3 quarters of games and has a couple good 4th quarters and wants 11 mill a year? I think theres too many people that need the ball if they re sign turk…gortat should be the #1 priority. That would give you jameer vince pietrus lewis and howard, and would be just as good when gortat is in because it would open up more shots for vince, lewis, and nelson.
June 26th, 2009 at 12:45 PM
rubio will be lucky is hes jason williams. because a lot of 180lb pg’s who cant shoot and cant guard anyone become all stars
June 26th, 2009 at 1:48 PM
So you feel child molesters are deserving of praise and are unfairly hated, gotcha.
Interesting take on “cheaper”, I mean yes, if you remove Alston, Hedo, and Lee (only 3 starters on a team that made the finals) and replace those 3 players with one Vince Carter (who’s biggest career win was getting that contract), then yes, technically cheaper.
June 26th, 2009 at 1:50 PM
So you feel child molesters are deserving of praise and are unfairly hated, gotcha
not at all. What the heck is wrong with you man?
June 26th, 2009 at 1:57 PM
how can you honestly say that?
VC isn’t an addition, he’s a replacement.
the guys shaq will be replacing weren’t gonna get minutes or produce.
i don’t like the shaq trade either, but it was still technically better.
June 26th, 2009 at 1:58 PM
but it was still technically better
Magic fan says VC trade is better. Cavs fan says Shaq trade was better. go figure
June 26th, 2009 at 2:03 PM
/dollar
June 26th, 2009 at 2:04 PM
not cool, coop. not cool.
June 26th, 2009 at 2:05 PM
2 dollars
June 26th, 2009 at 2:10 PM
spence – the Shaq trade is subtraction by addition.
June 26th, 2009 at 2:16 PM
FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME, IM NOT SAYING IT’S A GOOD TRADE, OK!??!!? i hate it.
but at the same time, i like ancient shaq way more than anything sasha or ben wallace were going to bring to the table.
June 26th, 2009 at 2:19 PM
spence, what do you think about that Shaq trade? Interesting, huh?
Plus, aren’t the Beatles great?
June 26th, 2009 at 2:34 PM
What, so I’m filled with hate because I think Micheal Jackson is a piece of trash? How is that cool.
June 26th, 2009 at 2:37 PM
dirt…that made me laugh. you sir, have a wonderful weekend.
June 26th, 2009 at 2:58 PM
irish you’re delusional. first of all, this is not cheaper for the magic because… they have to sign new players to replace the ones they gave up!! even if they just move Pietrus and Redick up in the rotation, they still need to sign guys to play behind them. kills any depth they had, as well as their cap flexibility for the next 3-5 years. second of all, doesn’t it kill you to give up c-lee? i’m in florida and my friends who are magic fans hate to give that guy up.
the magic will have the thinnest bench in history next year (redick as 6th man?). with 3 max salary type players, how could they not?
June 26th, 2009 at 3:02 PM
@bobby- i commented above explaining how it was a cheaper option. It was from Johnny Hollinger. Yes, only 8 players are under contract. You need a total of 13. What does that mean bobby? need to sign more players. hello
June 26th, 2009 at 3:03 PM
and what is up with the insults bobby. First you were on here insulting Maggs last week and now you are calling me delusional. Keep coming back
June 26th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
bobby- one more thing. You said something about their cap flexibility for the next 3-5 years. This is from a ESPN article today by Marc Stein
One of my favorite execs in the league has been telling me for months that the Magic are set up for the next three to five years better than any other team in the league
June 26th, 2009 at 4:22 PM
not trying to insult you personally, just concerned for your well being. you explained how it’s a cheaper option, but i don’t think your explanation took into account the fact that more players would have to be signed. and your quote from marc stein is misleading… the real quote is One of my favorite execs in the league has been telling me for months that the Magic are set up for the next three to five years better than any other team in the league … provided they find the finances to re-sign Hedo Turkoglu this summer. Now?… So the Magic’s flexibility was contingent on signing Turk BEFORE they traded for Carter. Now, they’re screwed.
again, wasn’t trying to insult you, but i think you’re looking at the deal through blue tinted glasses. and i apologize for giving the impression that i put you on the same level as maggs
