TBL After Dark: Lots of Baseball
Baseball, Television June 27th. 2009, 6:00pmIf you don’t like baseball, and that is really all that’s on for major sports tonight, I suggest you venture out into the unknown this evening.
But make sure to carry with you the stark honesty of a passionate man carrying the world’s largest afro pick. It will bring you great fortune.
Estancia sed, mis amigos.

According to the weather websites, there is a heat index of 97 with 70 percent humidity down here.
/when the sun goes down tonight
//I fucking hate this summer
June 27th, 2009 at 6:09 PM
Yankees/Mets on MLB Network tonight. Finally these teams get some national recognition.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:09 PM
My AC isn’t working, it’s a balmy 78 degrees in my townhouse right now.
Luckily theres a case of Sam Adams Witbier chilling right now, that should lower the temperature a few degrees.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:11 PM
it was 68 degrees in denver yesterday. one of my options post graduation. thoese fucks
June 27th, 2009 at 6:12 PM
Clown, I’m heading up there now.
Yes, I’m wearing a Keith ’stache.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:13 PM
can someone answer this: when and why did boxing go from 15 rounds to 12 rounds?
June 27th, 2009 at 6:15 PM
WBC reduced it from 15 to 12 in the early eighties when Duk Koo Kim got killed in the ring. The other bodies changed their rules throughout the eighties.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:21 PM
thanks
June 27th, 2009 at 6:25 PM
And here comes the tsunami. Amazing, its been perfect all day.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:36 PM
Ali wishes they would have shortened the rounds from 15 to 6 before frazier got ahold of him
June 27th, 2009 at 6:44 PM
you still in state college moleman?
June 27th, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Sure enough.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:45 PM
do you know what the deal is with the bands playing in the streets today?
June 27th, 2009 at 6:49 PM
No idea. I haven’t been downtown today, I like off Valley Vista, so I can avoid that area if need be. Which will be key in two weeks when fucking Arts Fest is going on. Last summer I lived on the corner of Burroughs and College and I couldn’t even drive out of my building while it was going on, absolute nightmare.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:52 PM
Ah here we go.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:59 PM
Interesting, if you want to see some real freaks out tonight walk around the State Theater, the Disco Biscuits are playing there tonight. Nothing funnier than heads whacked out on Ketamine.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:00 PM
I got my fill of that at the Phish show last week.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:02 PM
You went to Burgettstown? I was at the Camden show.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:03 PM
Nice. Yeah Burgettstown was sick, one of the better setlists from this leg definitely. Plus they don’t charge for parking!
June 27th, 2009 at 7:06 PM
yea, Divided Sky and YEM on the same night, great stuff.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:08 PM
Not to interrupt, but what was that shitty pizza place on Beaver Ave.? I graduated three years ago and forget already.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:09 PM
Canyon, had some last night. Fuckin’ terrible.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:11 PM
Canyon’s pizza is fucking awful, they used to have good wings though.
Can’t beat Bells and their stuffed pizza.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:13 PM
yesss. thanks man. cardboard pizza
June 27th, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Is it cheap? If so, then it’s automatically “good” college pizza. I ate Pokey Stix and Gumby’s for two years. Wouldn’t touch it now.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Texans it must be Evander day on ESPN2. I love it. I could watch him fight all day.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:21 PM
Real cheap. People used to line up outside that place at night, probably still do.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:22 PM
Got a bigger chick home one night this year by buying her pokey stix. Way to a big woman’s heart is thru her stomach.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:32 PM
Pokey stix were pretty decent…my least favorite cheap college eats was the fucking cosmic cantina. Ugh, I saw roaches in there several times, yet at 3AM, there’s a line out the door.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:32 PM
So true. So true.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:32 PM
That is fucking funny. I’m imagining the conversation …
Well, what if I throw in some pokey stix?
I had a thicky once who passed out in my bed afterwards. I got up and slept on my recliner. No need to be uncomfortable.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:34 PM
Good GOD I had forgotten about that place.
Though I will say to Chapel Hill’s credit, Time Out does hit the spot at four in the morning and you’re hammered drunk. I’ve had many friends pass out in their mashed potatoes there. Always got some extra to give to the bums that congregated outside waiting for bones.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:37 PM
SC – The pizza in Chicago kicks ass. Love me some Pizzeria Uno.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:39 PM
I just watched Revenge of the Nerds, that movie still holds up. Next up: Nerds in Paradise! Followed by a Cheech and Chong marathon. Shit yeah.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:43 PM
I’m trying to remember where I got food the one time I got drunk at PSU, alas, I was too hammered to remember. Although, one of my buddies wandered around til sunrise looking for weed. That was hilarious.
What’s that absurdly huge frat at PSU? The house is monstrous.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:43 PM
Citi Field is ridiculously amazing.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:44 PM
younglefty – This is the spot I always ordered pizza from. A Greek place and they butter their crust. It’s amazing. Uno, Lou Malnati’s and Gino’s East are the institution pizza places in Chicago.
I’m out of Chicago for two months, then moving into Lincoln Park in September. Going back to school at DePaul.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:44 PM
I got offered tickets to that Camden Phish show. Please say it sucked, cuz I had to work that night.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Chicago continues to creep up the list of where I’ll live after I graduated college. Ugh, seems so far away.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Actually, I was talking about the ninth st Cosmic…the one in Chapel Hill is 10x cleaner (and it’s still a pig sty), though the food’s just as shitty. Honestly, my late night food around the triangle is Cookout…there’s always one somewhere close by, and you get to sit there and piss off the DD by shouting out random milkshakes in the speaker. The only good thing about August in NC is the watermelon shake at Cookout.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:54 PM
SC – I kind of figured that was the deal with Uno. I always hit it when in Chicago for work. I liken it to Dreamland, the barbecue joint up the street from our Norcross office. Everybody goes when they’re in town.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:56 PM
I miss Are U Hungry. They had some delivery deal where they would include a blunt with your order.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:56 PM
So, right now, as I’m sitting in my office, this couple across the street is fucking SCREAMING at each other in public. Each holding a 30 of Natty Ice. They’re at least in their mid-30s. This is fucking classic.
I’ve paid to see movies that were less entertaining than this.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:59 PM
Still do I believe. God those sandwhiches are the devil’s brood.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:00 PM
whoever is pitching for the tigers is getting worked by the astros..
June 27th, 2009 at 8:04 PM
Holt ahir. I juar looked at the score. That’s no joke.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:05 PM
Billy’s smashed.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:08 PM
Yeah, I have no idea what that was. I’m used to laptop keyboards, and I’m on a desktop cuz I’m at work? Yeah, that excuse will do.
I should be drunk right now. Fuck.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:09 PM
im on my way. my buddy who bought my bottle told me absinthe catches up to you. well im still waiting. i have a slight buzz but thats about it lol
June 27th, 2009 at 8:11 PM
Holt ahir is way better than goof jorp.
/stupid phone with no greater than symbol
June 27th, 2009 at 8:11 PM
lefty- Those places are still good. Gino’s has some of the best stuffed, Malnati’s is great for buying just a slice and Uno’s are everywhere.
They’re by no means Ditka’s, MJ’s or Rosebud. Places everyone goes in Chicago and pays way too much for not that good of food.
You’re in DC. I LOVE FIVE GUYS. They just opened one in CHI.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:18 PM
And, there’s a pizza place in Adams Morgan that has slices that are massive. Drunk stopped there a few times.
Also, Cafe Asia in DuPont is one of my favorite spots.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:20 PM
Lorenzo’s & Sons on South St. in Philly is open 24hours, slices are HUGE, and amazingly good. But you have no toppings choices, it’s like getting a cheesesteak here, no hesitation and the line is always out the door.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:22 PM
SC – Five Guys is the shit. They opened a few in Atlanta before I moved, and there’s one within walking distance of my apartment here. I’m tempted to eat that shit everyday.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:24 PM
Five guys is the tits, no lie.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:28 PM
The Northeast plus Chicago, and I am leaving the former for good after this shitty “Philadelphia Experiment” in a few months, has to be baseball heaven. Turn on sports radio, and they are talking about it 90% of the time when it is not football season, and then like 70% of the time with most of the rest the douchebag comments on the Eagles here including last season when they “just could not lose to the Arizona Cardinals” according to every “expert” around just like with the Cleveland Cavaliers against Orlando.
I should have known how bad it was going to be in this place only a month here in 2008 when I went to a local bar during the NBA playoffs, and not even on one of the multiple TVs were they showing that game but only the local Phillies game.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:29 PM
The Georgetown Cafe` & Au Pied de Cochon along Wisconsin Ave. have rocked for so many years now!
June 27th, 2009 at 8:30 PM
In ‘N’ Out Burger beats them all.
Then comes Kau’aina Burger in Hawai’i.
And then I’ll just go with Wendy’s triples instead of something else too overpriced like Five Guys the last time I went there.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:32 PM
Oh wait, Steak ‘n’ Shake beats Wendy’s I forgot about that one!
June 27th, 2009 at 8:32 PM
He does not lie. Animal style double double please. With a chocolate shake.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Paolo – I don’t think I’ve ever asked… Where are you originally from?
Or is that confidential like the mission?
June 27th, 2009 at 8:38 PM
i had both. 5 guys is better than in n out IMO (even with the secret menu)
June 27th, 2009 at 8:48 PM
Speaking of secret menu, SC, drop the Potbelly knowledge on us. You know, for the good of the mission.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:52 PM
Souvenir great stuff here in your posts carry on with them please.
I am originally from Indianapolis IN with parents who emigrated from Italy. I have lived in five cities as an adult and visited three more multiple times in the US plus the trips to mostly Italy. Later this year I will be on my sixth city where I hope at last I can settle in, and only that part is classified now.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Where you live in Philly, Paolo? I work in Philly but live in NJ, and except for the Sixers, and not a Philly fan. I despise the Eagles and Flyers.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:54 PM
Where’d you goto school in Indy?
June 27th, 2009 at 8:58 PM
I live in Bucks County, location classified, but I am moving nearby to Montogomery County. Plenty of distance between me the fuss around I-95 and the City of Philadelphia for sure too.
I did not despise the Eagles until I never met so many sadistic defeatist douchebag fans as here, so now I do. Same with Penn State types after the ultimate respect for Joe Paterno.
I have yet to see anyone wearing a Sixers jersey here even though often for all other teams. Post Iverson I don’t think this is a basketball town, and these douchebags cheered Iverson but booed Kobe so that should tell you a lot about them along with my comments in the baseball post about Easterners.
I was graduated from the University of Notre Dame, but where I went to school otherwise remains classified for now unless you paid attention my some of posts on Greg Oden.
June 27th, 2009 at 8:59 PM
Not gonna lie, my dad and I went to Indy every year for the US Grand Prix, was not impressed. That’s just me, but it seemed kinda burnt out. Not Trenton or Camden by any means, but not too nice. Although, there was one older neighborhood, old, bigger houses, parks around, seemed a bit outside of center city, that part was nice.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:01 PM
And let’s not forget those rumours of my days in federal prison in California in the Penal League as a strong safety, kicker, and punter. I was charged on several counts in the following in a case of mistaken identity:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovm34SgK8HQ
More on those days later. I’ve played soccer for years and now play rugby again.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:03 PM
I gotcha. I live in a town surrounded by Cherry Hill, in NJ. Not all that far from there.
Philly is a football town, through and through. And their fans are retards and bafoons. Of course, I’m a Ravens fan, so I get it real bad (for no real reason, we play each other every 3 years). Agreed on PSU. But I see some Sixers jerseys, but mostly Iversons or Iggy. Phillies fans are fair weather morons, as well. It’s hilarious how uninformed they are.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:04 PM
Souviner, what degree you going back to school for. I live in the northern burbs of chicago. Enjoy your chicago perspective.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:04 PM
Nope. I would have gone to Lawrence North had I stayed there though. My brother was at Craig and I was at Amy Beverland when we moved.
I grew up playing baseball at Skiles Test.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:06 PM
I went the first year through to my Indy 500 connection in my family, who get tickets every year. It was a let-down and sucked ever since until that year when due to the tire dispute, they ruined the future potential of F1 in Indy for decades.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:07 PM
I’ll always consider Philadelphia a baseball and basketball town despite football being the thing that most people want to talk about all the damn time. Most of the football fans are morons. The damn shame of it is that now that the Phillies are starting to win, more and more of the football fans have jumped on the Phillies bandwagon.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:07 PM
Should I watch Porky’s or Up in Smoke next?
June 27th, 2009 at 9:08 PM

they got good burgers there

June 27th, 2009 at 9:09 PM
You should read the book if you haven’t. It’s a really fast read and the ending is completely different. As much as I love that movie, the ending of the book makes a ton more sense and makes the narrator so much cooler.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:12 PM
I love college football for the Xbox. That and a 12 pack and I’m set. Though posting on the blackberry is tough
June 27th, 2009 at 9:15 PM
@angry – I’m going back for education. Got my undergrad in poli sci, did some sales and NPO work out of college and decided I wanted to blog and have summers off.
Jay’s commentary on teaching has pointed me in that direction. But it’s something I’ve looked at for a long time. Always wanted to be a coach, too.
@Paolo – I went to Indy for the 500 last year. Not an open wheel racing fan, but the mere spectacle of that event is outstanding. 6 buddies of mine and we rented an RV. Good times.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:18 PM
I’ve never been but apparent Indy is crazy fun. Like amature stripping fun.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:20 PM
Mole – Yeah, my dad and I were lucky, that was the one year we didn’t go and sold our tickets on eBay because my high school graduation was the same weekend, and my last high school meet was that week, too. Very, very lucky for us. Not however, for the guy who bought our tickets. That, and we got two free replacement tickets for the race next year, and sold those to cover the cost of our tickets.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:22 PM
But F1 is the tits. Incredible. Too bad it didn’t fly here in the States.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Basically you grew up not far from me, as I went to Craig one year and Skiles Test is running distance from Lawrence North. Amy Beverland was not built until the late 1980s when I was finishing up high school.
Eric Montross and Damon Watts, who made it to the NBA and NFL respectively, were in my class. For only a class of ~1700 getting two pro athletes and 3 guys to go to West Point was definitely some feat.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:25 PM
ha. you guys think the indy 500 spectacle is fun, try the week leading to talladega. its a 24/7 party. i would love to spend a week down there to check it out. i have no personal experience but im sure you could google it
/pissed off i haven’t been yet. fucking a
June 27th, 2009 at 9:25 PM
And my parents still live in its suburban area known as “Geist”.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:27 PM
lol I lived right near Geist Reservoir on Fall Creek Road.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:28 PM
If the O’s can hold on, this is a really nice win. I love the Nats sucking.
This MLB.tv thing was a fantastic investment.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:29 PM
Man that was one film with a huge let-down for its ending about the time Tyler Durden disappeared.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:31 PM
Honestly, the most fun strip club I had ever been to, even after having lived in Las Vegas, was none other than in Indianapolis for my brother’s bachelor party. Chicks can only get topless in Indy, not nude like Las Vegas and DC proper(and PA and Atlanta with no booze), but they can and do rub those fine tits in your face!
June 27th, 2009 at 9:35 PM
Oh yeah if you go to the Indy 500 you go through the worst part of Indianapolis and probably second to the slums of Gary Indiana in the state: the West side. For the race they patrol the area and traffic well, but otherwise stay the hell away from the “doughnut” that surrounds Indianapolis up to about 75th street and out to Post Road on the north and east sides now.
June 27th, 2009 at 9:39 PM
@buckner: Camden show was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, sucks you had work man
June 27th, 2009 at 9:44 PM
Fuck my life. I desperately need a drink…or several.

June 27th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
i dont live north of the border it was on the tv guide network…i tuned just in time to watch lady gag and then watch chris bosh tell me that nickleback wona award for something…how much you wanna bet that nickleback, evanescence, shania twain and avril lavigne won an award for whatever reason and lifetime achievement award went to bryn adams
June 27th, 2009 at 10:04 PM
Paolo – strip clubs in Atlanta are fully nude with booze. That being said, Tampa is the capital of titty bars.
Texans – I’ve been to Talladega, getting there on Friday morning, and the whole weekend is tits. It’s a must see for any NASCAR fan.
June 27th, 2009 at 10:07 PM
fuck. its 9. ill have to start drinking earlier during july 4th
June 27th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
younglefty, there isnt a NASCAR race there there until oct. is there some other kind of race there? i still envy you. i want to see the racing at that track.
June 27th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Gold Club in the ATL was the bomb when I frequented in the 90’s. But, Mons Venus in Tampa is the KING, non-Vegas classification… Lots more great ones in Tampa and Orlando as well. Been to more than I can count.
June 27th, 2009 at 10:19 PM
haha thank you whitesox for making the cubs under .500
June 27th, 2009 at 10:25 PM
Texans – I don’t know what other series race there. I’m sure there are legends series races or something. That place is unbelievably huge. If you go, get tickets in the upper part of the grandstand. That way you can see the cars most of the way around the track.
June 27th, 2009 at 10:25 PM

June 27th, 2009 at 10:28 PM

June 27th, 2009 at 10:58 PM
Man, eating crawfish is a traumatizing experience.
June 27th, 2009 at 10:58 PM
Goddamnit. The Cardinals got Mark DeRosa.
Ultimate insult as a Cubs fan. I want to egg Jim Hendry’s house. Then burn down Mark Shapiro’s.
June 27th, 2009 at 11:00 PM
Sorry.
Here’s your link.
June 27th, 2009 at 11:05 PM
Fucking just great. As if the Indians season wasn’t already over… DeRosa was a GREAT, GREAT pickup by the Tribe. Now? They get a fucking reliever and PTBNL for it…
At least I won’t be a slave to Tribe baseball the rest of the season.

i like to watch the NL CENTRAL impode
June 27th, 2009 at 11:10 PM
astros are almost in last place but only 4.5 games from 1st.
June 27th, 2009 at 11:11 PM
So let me get this straight….Michael Jackson died? Why isn’t the media covering this?
June 27th, 2009 at 11:11 PM
Buccos winning the central, I FEEL IT.
June 27th, 2009 at 11:16 PM
i wasnt old enough to remember the buccos in the world series. they have been a shit team since 1994 (49ers and cowboys hayday). it will piss me off the day the reds, pirates and brewers are at the top of the nl central
June 27th, 2009 at 11:24 PM
HIT THAT PIG WHISTLE!
June 27th, 2009 at 11:39 PM
@ Jimmy Chitwood: So let me get this straight….Michael Jackson died? Why isn’t the media covering this?
I actually think the coverage is commensurate with the passing of a below-average NFL WR’s passing. But maybe that’s just me.
June 27th, 2009 at 11:49 PM
Sorry yes forgot …Cobb County was not at the time, but you are right and they are awesome down there!
June 27th, 2009 at 11:59 PM
Sorry yes forgot …Cobb County was not at the time, but you are right and they are awesome down there!
What’s amazing is that the Gold Club structure is still there, fenced off, barren, while the entire area has been utterly transformed since it went under in 2002 when the owner got busted for racketeering.
It’s almost like itsa shire for a better, legendary time. I drive by there every day on the way to work and remember, fondly, one night there when a friend who was a DJ at a club in Dallas got my and a buddy fully compted. It wasn’t bad…at all.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:00 AM
and by “shire” I mean “shrine”
(oh and we got compted for a night at the Atlnata Gold Club, which wasn’t bad…at al, in case that wasn’t clear)
June 28th, 2009 at 12:12 AM
Goddamn, the guy who played Chong Li in Bloodsport was fifty when they made that movie. Unreal.
On a related note, when I worked in a grocery store in highschool I consistently carded forty year old Asian chicks for booze because they age so slowly.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:13 AM
Yes, in the 1990s, it was Gold Club and Cheetah’s for the premiere action and talent (and money out of your pocket unless you got comp’ed like that blackfrancis) …and various other smaller ones spread throughout town …great stuff.
I don’t know what Cobb County has done since, but they allowed 18 and over in places that were all nude with no booze in those same days. I went to that place on Marietta Avenue I think that was part of some local corruption earlier in the decade when it gots its license. It was cheaper fun, but the best action down there was always in the City of Atlanta proper.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:15 AM
Oh yeah definitely ..been there and done a lot of that — they are great and they like a man with worthy authority too.
And they are hardly ever ninnies too.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:18 AM
It was cheaper fun, but the best action down there was always in the City of Atlanta proper.
Hasn’t changed a bit, Paolo. The Cheetah, while not the heydey Gold Club, is the best talent in ATL. don’t really ever get there because I reside in the sleepy borough of Decatur, I can assure that the Cheetah is stil thriving.
/Decatur rocks
June 28th, 2009 at 12:40 AM
My boys need a 3B and some extra offense, but now I fear they’re going to completely back off of their pursuit of Matt Holliday. With DeWitt’s cost-cutting measures, this could be the only move they’ll make until the off-season, especially with Perez gone now.
June 28th, 2009 at 5:28 AM
So I’m looking forward to the inevitable ‘biggest opening weekend ever’ post for Transformers … except how many of the other movies on that list opened on a Wednesday? None?
June 28th, 2009 at 9:27 AM
First, opening weekend totals don’t include wednesday and thursday receipts…so Transformers won’t break Spiderman’s records.
However, there’s a good chance it beats Dark Knight’s 5 day total…which would be ridiculous.
