Can Hedo Turkoglu Really Do Better than 4 years, $35 million?
1-liner, NBA June 30th. 2009, 1:15pmHedo Turkoglu: “The Magic tested Turkoglu’s loyalty to the franchise when they offered him a four-year contract extension worth approximately $35 million just after the Finals.” Can the 31-year-old really do better than that? And if he can, will it be for a team that’s in the mix for the NBA Finals? And even if he can do a bit better than that with a contender, remember to factor in the no income tax in the Sunshine State. Wouldn’t it be nice if Miami dealt Beasley for …whatever, and was able to grab Hedo this year and then Bosh the following year? According to various web reports, Portland’s hard-up for Hedo. Remember when we said prior to the draft that the Blazers need a SF, and you scoffed? Leadership and skilled passing are two qualities Portland could use. And they just said goodbye to Channing Frye last night to free up some cap room. (Florida Today)

sign and trade

Portland could use a guy like Hedo, but at the expense of tying up all their cap room? I think that would be a bad play. If I’m Portland I wait patiently and keep picking away at NO for CP3. Even if it takes another year. A solid PG is all they are missing, they have plenty of forwards.

I’m from Portland, believe me the Hedo chatter is huge here. The only issue with the sign and trade on Portland’s end is they have a ton of young players with small contracts so they would have to move a lot to make the numbers match up. I’m guessing they’d have to give up Rudy Fernandez and Bayless for Orlando to have any interest.

This is what I’ve been hoping for. An elite PG is way more valuable. I just think NO needs at least one guy people will pay to see, so I don’t see him moving for anyone Portland has.

@resultedefense- what about Outlaw?
June 30th, 2009 at 1:39 PM
Wow, even with Darius Miles on the payroll the Blazers are in such great cap shape its crazy.

Where in Portland do you live resolutedefense? I just moved up to the area from Eugene about a year ago. Although I live in Beaverton, not Portland. That will change as soon as my lease is up in September. Suburbia sucks ass.

Could the blazers make a move for Rondo?

Do people realize that Rashard Lewis has the most amazing contract in the history of the NBA? You ready for what the Magic owe him over the next four years? $18.8, $20.5, $22.1, $23.7 million! They owe him 80 million dollars! He’ll make more than Vince or Ike Howard over the next two or three years. Rashard Lewis is going to make more money than pretty much everyone in the NBA next year and then EVERYONE beyond that!?!?!?!?!
June 30th, 2009 at 1:44 PM
what about Outlaw?
He has a year left on his deal, makes about 4 mil. He didn’t do too well against Houston so that’s where a lot of the Hedo talk comes from here. I don’t have a problem with Outlaw, he can give you 15 off the bench easy. I think Fernandez’s shooting would fit really well with Orlando so that’s why they’d want him more, and he still has a couple cheap years on his contract.

Where in Portland
Northeast, kind of by Grant High School
June 30th, 2009 at 1:48 PM
Good point. Although a package of Rudy, Outlaw and maybe two other cheap hoppers could do it if NO starts feeling the financial pressure. Whatever Portland does they better get it right, they will only get once chance at this.

Jason Kidd, Andre Miller, Mike Bibby, Raymond Felton, and Nate Robinson are on the market. Depending on if they move Amare, maybe the Suns may feel the need to move Nash if they’re not competitive at all later in the season. There are plenty of other PGs out there.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:52 PM
I think they could and should if CP3 isn’t available. The word in this area is they don’t like Rondo because he can’t shoot. Which I think is bunk logic since they already have plenty of outside shooters. Rondo can penetrate and most importantly he can play some D, which is what Portland really needs out of the PG, a guy who can keep other PGs out of the paint. Portland got raped in the paint by other PGs this past season.

@Irish: What do you think the Magic should want from Portland in a sign-and-trade?
June 30th, 2009 at 2:03 PM
@resolute- Outlaw and Bayless

Irish, how’re you going to make the numbers work?

What kills Portland in trading for a big name guy is the Miles contract. They have $9 million against the cap they can’t trade (they have to pay Miles on the cap, but can’t trade the obligation to pay him to another team). It’s just dead cap space and drives me nuts what they could have done this offseason without that.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:13 PM
If Hedo gets his $10+ million per season contract, Outlaw and Bayless only combine for only like $6 million.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:15 PM
Breaking news: Michael Curry fired from the Pistons.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:17 PM
@ruck- i dont get into the salaries and crunching numbers part of the NBA. I know Orlando ownership has alreayd given the green light to spend spend spend. Only 8 guys under contract. need 13
June 30th, 2009 at 2:22 PM
I still think there is a 70% chance Hedo resigns with Orlando
June 30th, 2009 at 2:28 PM
Considering what the Magic initially offered and what Hedo wants, it sounds like they could most likely work something out. That’s assuming both sides stay rational of course.
