Yardwork: Jimmy Rollins Nears the Mendoza Line
Baseball July 2nd. 2009, 11:00am
New York Yankees 4, Seattle 2: A-Rod hit a game-winning homer! Eh, doesn’t count, it came in the sixth inning. In this photo, he’s seconds away from pulling a JC Romero.
Atlanta 11, Philadelphia 1: Former MVP Jimmy Rollins is batting .205. World Series MVP Cole Hamels, whom we wondered about in the preseason, is just 4-5 with an ERA of 4.98. And these guys are still leading the NL East.
Cincinnati 1, Arizona 0: Can someone tell us how much longer Johnny Cueto will remain with the Reds? The 23-year-old rebounded from two poor performances by permitting just one hit over six innings and the bullpen helped him improve to 8-4. Back to the original question – at what point do the Reds lose this guy to a team that spends money? 2011? Can’t seem to find how long he’s signed for. He’d look nice in Pinstripes.
New York Mets 1, Milwaukee 0: The five game skid is over because … Mike Pelfrey outpitched Yovani Gallardo? That’s a bizarre way to avoid getting swept. After dipping into AAA for a makeup game with the ButtPirates today, there’s a rare July series with some importance: three at division-leading Philly this weekend.
The Pirates and the Nationals both lost. Are you surprised? Don’t be. Can’t wait for the 2009 revenue figures to emerge – what’s the guess on what those owners pocket, $30 million each? More?

I feel sorry for DC. They got a team that was purposefully being run into the ground by MLB and now the city has to pay for this by inheriting a depleted farm system that at one time was the cream of the crop. The MLB team aside from Dunn and Zimmerman is a joke and the attendance is at the bottom of the league regardless of the fact that they play in a new park.

After dipping into AAA for a makeup game with the ButtPirates today
ButtPirates? Oh I see what you did there.
The Astros made Bud Black’s life a little more miserable; beat the Padres 7-1. NL Central is still wide open, Astros are in 5th but only 4 games back.
/homered.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:11 AM
it most certainly does count.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:13 AM
3 games out. It’s on, bitches.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:14 AM
it most certainly does count.
Sparty, didn’t you know? Any HR A-Rod hits prior to the 8th inning is a selfish exercise in stat building.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:15 AM
Nothing good that Arod does counts around these parts.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:17 AM
pki- Plus they had to deal with Jim Bowden
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:18 AM
The Braves have scored 3 runs or less in each of Vasquez’s last seven starts so some runs today would be nice. Let’s finish the sweep, boys.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:20 AM
Yeah I remember the game that got rained out was from a four game series in which the ‘ButtPirates’ (and you accuse the fake bird siters of being lame?) put up 22 runs on the Mets in the three games that got played and destroyed them. Oh and it was right after your last ‘omg contract the Pirates’ post.
So the Pirates score at least thirty runs today.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:21 AM
Sparty, as a yankee fan, i would trade 200 late-game homers in may, june, july, aug for a handful in October.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:22 AM
fetch – Another new link? Wow.
fetch:blogs::Travis Henry:kids
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:24 AM
if you don’t have those handfuls, you don’t get to October. The Yankees success in the regular season has been tied to A-Rod more than you think.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:24 AM
Seriously though TBL, what is up with all this hatred towards the Pirates? Does this stem from the time when you wanted to be a Pirate for Haloween but your mom made you go as a sports blogger?
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:25 AM
having a-rod on my fantasy team makes me not give a shit how he does in october. hit ‘em now, a-rod, hit ‘em now.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Best headline ever?
I think so.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:27 AM
lefty – I traded one twins blog for another. I got bought out, as the kids say.
Twins and Tigers, big 3 game series in the dome this weekend. If you can call a July series big I guess.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:28 AM
Well OBVIOUSLY they would have been so much better this year with Nady, Bay, and McLouth all playing together.
Oh wait what’s that? They were five games under five hundred on July 1st last year, and they were five games under five hundred on July 1st this year with a lineup ‘on paper’ vastly inferior to last years? Oh.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:29 AM
mole- how long until they dump Duke?
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:30 AM
The mating cry of Yankee fans.
If you cant beat em, buy em.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:31 AM
If they think it isn’t an aberration, they won’t. He showed this performance before but then had some injury and mental issues. I would be more than happy with them sticking with him and Maholm. If they can dump Snell for cash at this point I’d be thrilled.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Ah, so the Orioles have an historic comeback against the Sox and it gets top billing, but the Sox come back from 4 down in the 9th and it gets zippo. Cant you and duffy share the Yardwork?
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:33 AM
dont hate the player, IU, hate the game.
someone sent me this
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=4660
what does ‘near the minimum’ mean?
there’s also this
http://www.redreporter.com/pages/the-red-report-johnny-cuet
but that only makes it seem like CUeto has one more year.
is there an MLB site like this one, which is gold for the nba?

July 2nd, 2009 at 11:33 AM
Holy christ, the Twins are in the running for Sano? There’s no way they’ll outspend the Pirates, but at least they’re attempting to do something smart.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:34 AM
G HR RBI BA OBP SLG OPS
123 17 49 .309 .377 .469 .846
39 7 17 .279 .361 .483 .844
One of these numbers is the pure definition of clutch, the other is the pure definition of choking. Really?
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:35 AM
I don’t even remotely trust this guy. Nobody with the hype he has should be interested in coming to the Pirates, and he has got to be at least seven years older than he claims to be.
That being said… sign em up!
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:36 AM
i guess the philosophy changed a little bit after papa pohland died?
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:37 AM
is there an MLB site like this one, which is gold for the nba?
TBL, you should use HoopsWorld. It’s updated far more frequently on NBA salaries, plus you can get to it on the top bar of your own website.

damn my table came out wacky, guess it doesn’t reconize extra spaces.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:38 AM
TBL, leage minimum is 400K. ESPN says he makes 418K.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:39 AM
On hold with T-Mobile customer service, music:
I don’t want to argue/
I don’t know what to say/
Get me out of your sorry ass/
Get me out of your way.
Classic the way things are going in this economy. Unprofessionalism has never been so in vogue in corporate America.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Well his kid took over, so I’m a little skeptical, but who knows. And yeah, I’m sure the Twins are signing a 26 year old.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Ah contract talk. Which reminds me, of the seven teams who currently have worse records than the Pirates right now, only one has a lower payroll (Padres). Indeed, contract the Pirates. But still treat Billy Beane like a genius and float the idea of making a movie about his ‘genius’ for some fucking reason.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:43 AM
so according to this …
http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/cincinnati-reds_24.html
Cueto is up for grabs in the winter of 2010? well the Reds should just deal him now because one of the big boys will overbid, right?
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:43 AM
A true Yankers fan mantra: No HR’s from A-Roid count and no errors by Jeter count.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:44 AM
No it said he’s had 1 year of service time right? Then he has 4 more after this year before he’s a free agent.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:45 AM
you guys are a fucking riot. johnny cueto ain’t going anywhere.
plus, i think he is arbitration eligible in ‘10. not a free agen
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:47 AM
Yeah he isn’t a super two or anything, he’s not going anywhere. Plus the Reds actually have some potential.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:47 AM
cueto only has 2 years in the majors, so doesn’t that mean he has either 3 or 4 years of arb? I am not an expert but I thought most guys are under team control for at least 6.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:50 AM
yeah he is under team control through 2013, although his arb numbers are going to get pretty high.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:54 AM
Never feel sorry for DC! They’ve been screwing the rest of us for years.
Recommended hard-core training to get real before you EVER feel sorry for DC again:
1) Watch nothing but C-Span for 24 hours. That’s about what people are really like there. See how you feel afterwards.
2) Try driving on the Beltway for one lap during rush hour.
3) Read as much of http://www.politico.com as you can stand.
4) Watch about as much of CNN in the evenings as you can stand when they stop talking about Michael Jackson
5) See this fine video about Arlington VA, faux hip and full of extreme douchebags:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T1RMuoQnKo
6) Do you remember how it feels to do your OWN taxes? If not, try it! And check your paystub for how much they get every time before your check is even deposited! (Business owners exempt from this recommendation; you know what a pain in the ass taxes and admin are)
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:56 AM
Volquez will get dealt before Cueto. More service time.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:57 AM
I dont think Volquez is going anywhere either. The Reds are trying to build through pitching, and those two guys are pretty damn good.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:00 PM
Me neither. He’s apart of the Rainbow Coalition with Arroyo, Votto and the rest of Wayne Krivsky’s guys. But, he’s still more likely to go than Cueto.
@Paolo – Where the hell you been? You made an appearance over the weekend and then pulled a Batman.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:07 PM
so if he has 4 years left, why wouldn’t the site say it? is there some formula i’m not aware of?
service time – 5 years = whatever?
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:09 PM
Ah sorry about that …was working a lot this week …last day today before I head out of town tomorrow …I posted late when I got home from my evening shift on many posts if you check back a few pages. Most of that is not noticed though, but have at it.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:11 PM
@Paolo4007
I live here.
1) No one I know watches CSPAN
2) I drive to Tysons Corner every day from Alexandria (it’s 15 miles and it takes me an hour both ways on a good day)
3) I prefer huffpo and drudge report
4) I watch the headlin news at lunch
5) Love the Arlington Rap video
6) Live in Alexandria because of lower taxes and housing market
To sum it up, I feel sorry for the city and the attempt to bring baseball back to this city.

Rights Granted to Players with Service Time
As was mentioned above, player with three years of ML service time (or Super Two status) is granted salary arbitration eligibility. Another benefit of having three years’ service time is that the player may not be removed from the 40-man roster without his permission (after being outrighted once to the minors). Instead, he can choose to become a free agent immediately or at the end of the season.
Furthermore, a player with five years of experience can not be optioned to the minors, even if he had options remaining, and may obtain his release. In addition, under the pre-2007 CBA, a five year player that is traded during a multi-year contract may during the offseason demand a trade or become a free agent–though if his wishes are granted, he loses free agency status for three years thereafter, making this a little-used option these days. The 2007-2011 CBA eliminates this provision.
A player with six years’ service time is eligible for free agency, while a so-called ten and five player–one who has ten years of service time, the last five with the same team, can’t be traded or assigned without his consent. Todd Helton is a perfect example of a ten and five player.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:12 PM
In short…Cueto isn’t going anywhere.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Isn’t it the same formula/method they’ve been using for the past 30 years?
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:22 PM
Even if he was a FA after next season, remember who his manager is. His arm’s gonna fall off by May 2011.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:34 PM
mark prior is still waiting for his big contract from the big boys.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:37 PM
Pki,
1) No, no one there watches CSPAN whom I knew either, but when folks from elsewhere tell me they would like to live there, that’s what I tell them to watch first for a reality check on your phony crowd there.
2) Wow up route 7 or via the Beltway with various shortcuts on side roads? What a hellish commute for sure.
3) Your reading of politics online as as Washingtonian is higher than that of the average American. It comes with the territory there.
4) Same for watching headline news at lunch, but hey if that is all that is on no big deal.
5) Cool on the video
6) Good choice to live in Alexandria INSIDE the Beltway, as that housing market is far more stable in my opinion from real estate investment experience in that area as well.
Still you should not feel sorry for the city even whilst living there. You folks have it better financially, though definitely not in quality of life, than do most Americans due to the government and government contractor spending as the chief economic engine.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:58 PM
White Sox 6, Indians 2.
White Sox win nine of last eleven to get within three of the Tigers and the Indians are further relegated to their spot in the AL basement.
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 PM
Funny how the day after Yardwork leads off with the Red Sox blowing a big lead, the Orioles blowing a 4-run lead in the 9th is nowhere to be found.
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Coming back from 10-1 > Coming back from 5-1
/science
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:30 PM
Hey TBL- if you had done a little more research(aka clicking a link), you would have seen this explanation of service time.
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:20 PM
I believe it’s a 6/4 rule. 6 total years or 4 years in the big leagues. And your big league clock starts as soon as you are called up.
